#1999. Cherry Red

This apple tree was sold to me in 1999 as a semi-dwarf Stayman Winesap. It is not semi-dwarf; it is in fact gigantic by apple tree standards. It isn't Stayman Winesap, or even red at all. Because I planted it in the correct spacing for smaller trees, it has almost completely overshadowed its nearest neighbor, a rather nice Golden Delicious. It responds to pruning by aggressively getting Much Larger. The apples are divine. I love her; I'm vexed by her; I hope she lives forever. I'm deeply curious about what I'd get if I planted some of her seeds.

Strawberries, rhubarb, two small blueberry bushes, and Nanking cherry bushes that did, even though their blooming time was cold, set fruit. I will continue to try to acidify the blueberries; maybe add some acid once a week until the soil tests around 5 pH.

Sun Wukong is such a cool character across the board since if you genderbent the character - very little would change other than the reactions of those around them.

Hero is Back: Short red hair, chewing on hay, tall af? Thats half the butch farmers in my county. Liuer has a brief moment of "The Great Sage is a woman?" before going straight back to fanboying about how cool Dasheng is. Zhu Bajie is likely shocked and appalled that he was defeated by a woman - tho still shoots his shot. Attract does not work on Dasheng. Story accidentally becomes a tale of a mother sacrificing her life to protect her son, and ends with the son sacrificing himself to protect his new mother.

Reborn: Still a chaotic hissing gremlin of a monkey. Brief moment of funny where the very feminine Taoist acolytes misgender Smokey as male since she still looks the same. Zhu Bajie hesistates to hit on Smokey (despite her very convincingly diguising herself as his wife during his recruitment), since she terrifies him. Smokey still arises from their false death cloaked in blue flame and lava. And still mourns the loss of Fruitie.

NewGods: Bigger plot twist of Ace's identity. No one has figured out her identity for so long (including Ao Guang) cus they all assumed SWK was a guy. Still a giggling, gambling lush. Yunxiang: "Hey whos this drunken, half-dressed old lady offerring to train me in exchange for a motorbike- oh sweet Buddha she's the Monkey King."

1999/2000 Cartoon: Sugar is already femme af. No change.

Netflix: Little character change, though Cherry's story would indirectly become a glass ceiling situation with the Immortals. Men can become immortal by killing lots of evil demons (source: Erlang & Hou Yi), but women gotta suffer (source: Guanyin). Bonus girl bonding with Lin.

Smash Legends: Starfruit leans into gender stereotypes for the views. Goes full tiktok e-girl with her asethetic. Would form punk girl band with Goldie.

And lets not forget how many live-action Sun Wukongs are played by women actors and/or stuntwomen.

Gender bending their Macaques also do not change much. Basically these monkeys could be any gender indentity and still be themselves

Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland for the characters ask

Favorite thing about them: What a colorful and funny villainess she is, despite her small amount of page or screen time.

Least favorite thing about them: Well, obviously, she's mean, bloodthirsty, and as Disney's Alice says, a "bad-tempered old tyrant."

Three things I have in common with them:

Random headcanon: She really does put pepper in her tarts. Not as much as the Duchess's Cook would, but spiced cherry tarts – as spicy as her personality – are her specialty.

Unpopular opinion: I wish more adaptations would remember that she's a separate character from the Red Queen in Through the Looking-Glass. The Tim Burton movies and the '90s TV series Adventures in Wonderland both combine them into one character, and even Disney's animated Queen of Hearts speaks many of the Red Queen's lines from the second book. But they have nothing in common except that they're both queens associated with the color red, and both bossy and fairly unpleasant. The Queen of Hearts is a playing card while the Red Queen is a chess piece, and the Queen of Hearts is a raging, tyrannical blowhard who wants to behead everyone who annoys her, while the Red Queen is like a strict, fussy governess, always telling Alice what to do and how to behave. Still, I don't mind the fact that Disney's animated version gives her so many of the Red Queen's lines, because it makes her a better, more well-rounded villain for the screen: one who can turn her temper off and play the role of a proper, graceful lady when it suits her, instead of just shouting angry commands all the time.

1992 Monthly Asuka May Issue, Title Page Illustration

This was a two-page spread for the title page of the very first chapter of the series. The desertification of Tokyo is an important theme which is why the opening scene starts with it. I removed the outlines of the background art to convey the strength of the harsh sunlight.

The background of the previous announcement illustration was red. so I decided to go with white for this one. To make the "X," I pasted strips of Colortone over the image.

Since this image was for a jigsaw puzzle that was a bonus giveaway in the magazine, I created distinct areas of different colors and even embedded small pieces of glass in it (laughs]. The theme is cherry blossoms, and the base colors are pink and purple.

The color theme for this illustration is pink. X began serialization during cherry blossom season, and I had an image in my mind of Kamui together with the cherry blossoms, so that's why I drew it. He still looks naive and naughty in this [laughs.]

More flowers again after page 2 Kamui is out in the snow in this illustration, so the flowers are winter camellias. I drew the camellias in two separate styles: the ones on his clothes look flat, while the ones in the background look three-dimensional.

Red is the color theme for volume 1, so for this image, I used red and black which is a typical color combination for X. Since this illustration was for the first volume of the series, I made it a straightforward archetypal one.

Parchment paper is interesting to use because the color of the stock shows through in the finished piece. Kamui and Kotori hardly have any scenes together, so I tried to at least let them be together in the illustration [laughs].

This image was drawn to be printed upon a rather unique type of paper; I hope it comes through in the actual printed illustration. I love drawing Kamui and Kotori together.

This one is the result of a bold challenge (laughs). Ohkawa brought up the idea of drawing the illustration as if it were a reflection upon the water, so I did it. The texture of the paper made it fun to color the piece.

The pattern on Arashi's obi was far more difficult to do than the kimono itself (laughs). But it was fun to work on. It's a pseudo-Japanese fantasy look, I guess (laughs).

Since green was the color selected to be the theme for this illustration I immediately decided to draw a jungle [laughs]. I had this image in my head of Kanoe as queen of the jungle.

Fuma's in the kendo club, so he's wearing a hakama. But he's holding a the Sacred Sword laughs!! I used the texture of the paper to create a kimono-like pattern in the background.

The main outline is drawn in aqueous ink, which I diluted with water before using. The background tone is a mixture of yellow and orange; because this is an illustration of Kotori I wanted it to have a warm and cute feeling
