SEMA Show Highlights for the Muscle Car Minded
Looking for resto muscle? The SEMA Show is not where you want to be, as most of the automotive aftermarket companies who display their wares in the Las Vegas Convention Center every year are more interested in what’s to come, not what has been. We were glad to see new restoration products during our visits with Classic Industries/OER and Original Parts Group Inc., and we’ll be sharing those with you in the months to come. But for now, here are a few muscle-adjacent products making news.
Hellephant Hands down, the biggest news we found at the SEMA Show was Mopar’s introduction of the Hellephant, a 426ci, supercharged, Gen III Hemi crate engine that puts out 1,000 hp and 950 lb-ft of torque. The name is a portmanteau of Hellcrate, Mopar’s previous horsepower champ engine kit, and Elephant, the nickname given to 426 Hemis back in the day. Mopar intends the alloy Hellephant to be transplanted in pre-1976 street and off-road vehicles, meaning it isn’t smog-legal for your daily driver, sorry. As it did with the Hellcrate, Mopar has developed an installation kit for the Hellephant for virtual plug-and-play installation, says the company.
Mopar displayed (and fired up) one of the Hellephant motors at a SEMA Show press conference, where it also pulled the wraps off the swoopy Super Charger concept car, a much-massaged 1968 Charger fitted with the Hellephant and a T-6060 six-speed manual trans from a Challenger SRT Demon. The Hellephant goes on sale in the first quarter of 2019; visit cratehemi.com to get yours.
Yenko Continuation Camaro Classic Industries/OER displayed two cars bearing the Yenko name. One was a Corvette convertible with a 1,000hp supercharged LT1 engine, courtesy the folks at Specialty Vehicle Engineering. The other was a Daytona Yellow 1969 Camaro that was the first of what will be a series of Yenko continuation cars. Brand New Muscle Car out of Tulsa, Oklahoma, has been licensed by Classic Industries to re-start Yenko Camaro construction, fabricating the cars out of brand-new bodies, suspensions, and engines. The display Camaro had a ZL1 powerplant based on GM’s Anniversary Edition 427 crate engine, a suspension by Chassis Works, and big American Racing wheels. The Yenko continuation cars can be custom ordered to look retro or fully Pro Street, if that’s what floats your boat. Prices start at around $150,000. Visit brandnewmusclecar.com for more info.
Boss 429 Continuation Car Ford fans can rekindle Boss passion with the introduction of the Boss 429 continuation cars by Classic Recreations. It’s one of three continuation 1969 Mustangs that Classic Recreations has been licensed by Ford to build; you can also order new Boss 302 and Mach 1 models. The SEMA display car started with a gennie 1969 Mustang body that was fitted with a custom-built, 850hp Boss 429 engine and a modern suspension with adjustable coilovers. The made-to-order recreations can be built using restored original bodies or brand-new sheetmetal. “Investment starting at $209,000,” says the classic-recreations.com website.
GSS Hellcat Fifty years ago Norm Kraus worked with Hurst in the creation of the 440-powered M-code Dart. Also in 1968, Hurst collaborated with Oldsmobile to produce the first Hurst/Olds. In celebration of those two events, Hurst Heritage by GSS is offering a limited edition (50, natch) Challenger Hellcat Widebody painted in the same Peruvian Silver/Tuxedo Black as the first-year Hurst/Olds cars. GSS Supercars’ Larry Weiner told us they painstakingly reproduced the two-tone scheme and mimicked details that only a diehard H/O lover would appreciate. It took the GSS team 14 months to get the display car from Dodge, as it was a manual transmission model—necessary to install a “real Hurst shifter.” Weiner estimates each car will take eight weeks to build, at a cost of $36,000 over the price of the Challenger. Learn more at gss-supercars.com.

If you can’t get your hands on one of the original Dodge Dart Super Stock cars, mainly because it is reported that only 80 were produced, then a quality recreation may be a good second best. The original ’68 version was a purpose-built dragster ready for NHRA Class B Super Stock racing, now easily fetching over $200,000 in prime condition.
This one is listed as saying it has all the “bells and whistles” of an original like a 1968 426ci. Hemi engine, Dana 60 rear end, magnesium cross ram intake manifold, but with some modern improvements like a 3″ exhaust system, modified side bars and new front seats (the full list of parts below).
The car is said to have had a recent tuneup, which includes a carburettor rebuild and from the video, sounds and looks in great shape. It’s clear that the car is excellent throughout, but as this is a re-creation is it worth the asking price? A regular 1969 Dodge Dart, checking out other listings in prime condition can reach anything from the high 20s to low $40,000 mark. Add to this a rare 426 Hemi engine and all the upgrades, it’s probably hitting the mark of the asking price.
This would mainly suit somebody who favors the original or one who wants a street legal vintage drag racer, but the price point is way out of their range. In any case a fine vehicle all-round.
BODY & PAINT Urethane 2 stage paint Fiberglass hood and scoop All lights and horns are functional Chrome in excellent condition Repaired minor chip in front windshield (see photo)

Miss Golden Shifter, Linda Vaughn, Highlights the Second Annual Carlisle Hurst Nationals
Car and Driver magazine once referred to her as Racing’s Earth Mother, back when the Aquarian philosophy impacted pop culture. For many male race fans, she was the ultimate trophy girl. To the sponsors and sanctioning bodies, she remains a valuable spokesperson. For the attendees at the Second Annual Hurst Nationals, Linda Vaughn’s popularity stood the test of time as she again took to the rear platform of a Hurst-themed car featuring a huge Hurst shifter display.
The 2018 event, held on the same weekend as the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals, goes into the books as one of the most interesting in Carlisle Productions’ history. The annual Chrysler show is one of the largest in the world; more than 2,700 vehicles were in attendance this summer, with tens of thousands of attendees during the three beautiful days of Mopar celebrations. However, the event managers all admitted that nobody before at any Carlisle event had garnered the attention Linda did on her parade lap.
Last year, the Carlisle crew and Performance West Group manager Larry Weiner took the plunge to cohost a special event for enthusiasts of the legendary shifter manufacturer. Weiner is responsible for late-model vehicle conversions to Hurst-themed packages and a longtime manager for the Mr. Norm Krause franchise under the Grand Spaulding Sport logo; he knows the Hurst mystique well. Ms. Vaughn is best known as the brand’s timeless spokeswoman. She and her original Hurstettes were a fixture at many events in their heyday. However, health issues kept her from making an appearance at the inaugural event. This year she headlined a list of celebrities that included Bob Riggle of Hemi Under Glass fame, Hurst employees like Howard Marsales and Don Glover, and others.
It was 50 years ago, in 1968, that the Hurst brand seriously branched out to do vehicle conversions. While some of this was related to taxicabs and vans, best known to muscle car fans are the first 455-inch Hurst/Olds packages and the notorious A-Body Hemi Darts and Barracudas. With the Chrysler event close by, those cars were a focus, and a number of them were inside on display in the Carlisle Expo Center, which is located only a block from the formal fairgrounds show location.
Thursday kicked off the event with a huge cruise-in and barbeque in the outdoor parking lot. On Friday a non-stop gathering of people trekked through the cavernous hall to see the cars, meet noteworthy former Hurst engineers and employees, and pore through albums of rare photos, old blueprints, and glass cabinets full of prototype parts and rare promotional items. Meanwhile, several seminars were given by experts on both Friday and Saturday, the two days the event is formally held.
But the big moment was on Saturday just before lunch, when a vibrant Linda, again dressed as Miss Hurst Golden Shifter, climbed upon the platform on the original Hurst/Olds convertible pace car from the 1972 Indy 500. Owner Joe Spagnoli then drove her slowly through the fairgrounds to a planned luncheon. This had not been announced until moments beforehand. Thousands of fans poured out from the show fields to see The First Lady of Motorsports recreate history. Always gracious, Linda was thronged by people for the entire route, and had massive lines for her autograph as well.
As part of the celebration of Hurst’s heritage this year, the featured cars were the Darts and Barracudas that were built under contract 50 years ago, in 1968, for NHRA Super Stock racing. There were 10 of the original cars on display in the Carlisle Expo Center, plus others at the associated Carlisle Chrysler Nationals.
The return of Miss Hurst Golden Shifter, Linda Vaughn, was highlighted by this parade lap within the Carlisle Fairgrounds, where she was followed by a huge crowd. The car is the original pace car for the 1972 Indy 500, and the original platform was given as a gift to car owner Joe Spagnoli by the late Jack Watson.
Of course, the Hemi Mopars were not the only thing Hurst did. The 1969 SC/Rambler package came in this colorful scheme as well as a more vanilla version (seen behind) and helped establish the reputation of the AMC product line thanks to colorful period advertising and a good street reputation.
This 1968 Hurst/Olds Cutlass was from the first of the H/O programs. Engineers had originally designed an operable spoiler that would have gone on the rear edge and lifted from the surface under acceleration. The images of that prototype were among the photo albums on display. This example, owned by Glen Katterson, is number 45 of the 515-unit run produced that first year.
Howard Marsales served as the Hurst “shifty doctor” at many events during the 1970s, but he was also employed by Hurst as a fabricator when the Hurst Hemi cars were constructed in 1968. He is seen here with Clayton Wright’s “Slo-Motion” Barracuda, whose last national event pass down the track was in 1987.
Bob Riggle of Hemi Under Glass fame was reunited with the “infamy” car, the 1968 Barracuda that put him and Jay Leno on their heads during a TV show taping at Irwindale. Now repaired, the car was sold by owner Bill Sefton to prolific collector Joe Spagnoli before the weekend concluded. We’re not sure if Riggle will be giving him flying lessons.
This 2017 Mustang owned by Andy Jacko was among the cars modified in more recent years by Performance West Group under approval from Hurst. We do not know the extent of the modifications from stock beyond paints and spoilers, but would imagine horsepower is not an issue for this ponycar.
How cool is this? It’s a 22,000-mile unrestored Rebel Machine from 1970 done in Bayshore Blue with the 340ci engine, four-speed, E60-15 tires, dual-speaker AM/FM radio, and more. List was $4,136.15 discounted to $2,700 in December 1970. It is owned by Darrin and Nash Boeckel.
Bruce Smith owns this 1973 model Hurst/Olds. Built in the first year of the Colonnade design, it has some interesting options, foremost the rotating front bucket seats. Indeed, if the Firebird was carrying on the ponycar legacy, the Hurst/Olds was doing likewise for the luxury performance market.
The optional bucket seats in the 1973 model rotated a full 90 degrees.
The following year, the model again was selected to pace the Indy 500. This example received the W-30 455ci engine, pace car lettering, and Indy Firehawk raised-white-letter tires. Jack Hooks owns it today.
The 48 Dodge Darts built by Mr. Norm for 1968 are rare today, possibly due to the attrition from foolish ownership. Hurst created these Mr. Norm–exclusive cars under contract, and later Grand Spaulding sales manager Al Smith submitted a list of owner’s names to NHRA for legality. Larry Weiner believes Norm ordered all of them, with a selection of colors and options, in one fell swoop, allowing customers to take immediate delivery. This example is owned by Rick Simpson of Canada.
Collector Glen Kattering had this prototype of the stillborn 1977 Hurst/Olds program on display. Beautiful with many one-off components, it would have used the 403ci engine. Olds built only six examples of that.
For its 15th anniversary, there was a special release of the 1983 Hurst/Olds, which had taken on a far more formal appearance than its 1968 elder. This unrestored example, one of 3,001 built, shows 6,900 miles and is owned by Ed and Sharon Pienta.
Seen through the open hood of a 1970 model Hurst-Chrysler 300H is another one of the late-models modified by Performance West Group under the GSS name. The original car is powered by a 440 TNT engine and owned by Rikk Morris. The 2017 model is a limited-edition conversion done by PWG’s Grand Spaulding Sport and is available on any 2008-2018 model.
This car was raced back in the 1970s by the Carpinet brothers, who still own it. It was one of many that were resold through the Sox & Martin racing team after the 1968 season. Buddy Martin took these cars in on trade or simply to resell. Though not stock mechanically, it is a beautiful survivor from the second generation of changes to the Super Stock rules.
This was the 1988 20th Anniversary package. Only four actual H/O cars were built, but several dozen kits were sold to upgrade the Cutlass model. Those installed on a pre-1988 model were considered Aero Coupe conversions, not 20th Anniversary cars. This 1986 example, owned by Rick and Sharon Tice, was number 57 of the fewer than 100 kits believed sold.
The 1969 model year saw the debut of the H/O’s white/gold paint scheme as well as the hoodscoop design that would lead to the forward-edge production fiberglass versions for 1970. This matched-numbers car with A/C and cruise control is owned by Carl Sherwood and is one of 912 built that year.
Among the items on display was this shadow box showing the E-Body prototype handles for the Hurst Pistol Grip shifter.
T-tops were part of this 1976 edition Hurst/Olds, owned by Rick and Sharon Tice. This was a factory test mule for several years, but production challenges led Olds to cancel plan for these cars before they went into production. The car was discovered in 2004 after being missing since the late 1970s.
This 1979 version has been appreciated since new, showing only 1,965 total miles since delivery. Rick Clark is the owner of this black-on-black combination.
It is very rare to see one 1968 documented authentic Mr. Norm 440ci Dart; two were here this weekend. Bill Sefton owns the one in front. There are only 14 of these cars presently known to exist.
Mark Janacky (shown) and Dell Jones maintain an extensive collection of 1968 Hemi Dart and Barracuda research materials and shared info with interested people on Saturday morning.
Seen outside in the show field were more cars, including this 1979 version owned by Eugene Miller.
One more look at the 1972 convertible of Joe Spagnoli, whose giant shifter needed to be disassembled to move in and out of the building.
Got Chrysler? Oh, Yeah! Oh, that Chrysler deal? Here are a few images from the 2018 Chrysler Nationals, with a record 2,749 cars in attendance and tens of thousands of spectators.
This view represents about a third of the fairgrounds the show was held on. The event covers Mopars of every era.
Old and new thoroughbreds meet when Bill Woesnner’s 1970 Charger RT/SE and a new 2019 Hellcat Charger owned by Dodge posed in an open area on Thursday.
In addition to tributes to the Road Runner and Super Bee, there was this great display for the 50th anniversary of the 340 engine, which also arrived for the 1968 model year.
This vendor had the eye candy with this display of mainly boxed OE components.
Saturday night’s Hall of Fame banquet is a favorite tradition, as many of the people who made Chrysler’s history are on hand. Hosted by Mopar Collectors Guide, the event had a number of slide presentations. Ron McDaniel was accepting Hall of Fame honors for his late father, Bob.

Among an Ocean of Mopars from Chryslers at Carlisle, we found these cool 10.
One of the best perks of this gig is all of the really cool Mopar events we get to attend across the U.S. during the year. One of the largest is the Chryslers at Carlisle event in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Since the Carlisle events have been taking place now for almost 45 years, the word is out from all over the globe that this event is one worth making the trip. And we could easily tell this was true, as we were pulling into the fairgrounds where are eyes were treated to an endless parade of Mopars pulling onto the fields.
Whatever your favorites are, they were here. And although we’ve already posted dozens of what we found, we’ve also highlighted 10 of the very interesting cars we’ve found. You’ll find everything from a 1970 Chrysler Valiant from Australia that was built new as a Rally type racer to a ’69 Charger with a massive — and we mean massive — engine transplanted into it. We’ll let you find the details in the captions and photos.
So, again, if your travels take you to the Pennsylvania area next July, we strongly encourage you attend the Chryslers at Carlisle event.
1970 Plymouth ’Cuda Junior Amos; Callands, VA Junior Amos has owned his 440 six-barrel ’70 ’Cuda since 1975. Back then, it was purchased to replace a ’65 Plymouth Satellite that he and his dad had been drag racing. For a car that was only five years old, Junior claims that, “it had been used pretty good.” The 440 six-barrel mill was bad, the paint faded, and the seats torn. The tired 440 was sold off and replaced with a race-prepped engine. It ended up sitting until 1979, at which point he got it running. He never liked purple, so it was painted red, and that’s how it stayed until 1995, when it was damaged in an accident while he was towing it. At that point he decided to put it back to its original configuration, which would span another 10 years. The 440 currently installed has a correct date-coded block.
1968 Dodge Dart Duane Silvius; Kutztown, PA Duane and his wife, Carol, come from a family of faithful Chrysler product owners, and their ’68 Dart is a continuation of that lineage. It was purchased in 1985 to replace another Dart that was no longer road worthy. While it looks like a GTS, it’s an original 318 car that has had a 340 transplant. It was in rough condition when purchased, with the interior being the only thing that was in decent shape. The 340 was treated with some head work and a cam, and saw track action for about 25 years until it was retired to show car duties.
1972 Plymouth Duster Mike Cummins; Gansevoort, NY Mike purchased his black ’72 Duster 340 four-speed 32 years ago at the age of 19, right before he entered the Navy. It was in very poor condition with rotted quarters, no trunk floor, and riddled with dents, but it was a numbers-matching car. Over the years he has restored the Duster, which included a full rebuild of the 340 and the installation of a six-barrel setup. He also added an Air Grabber unit from a ’70 Super Bee and a sunroof from a donor ’73. Look for a full feature on his car in an upcoming issue.
1969 Dodge Dart  John Hafner; Schenectady, NY When you can’t find what you want, just build it. That’s the case with this Dart that was acquired by John as a partial restoration that had been stalled for a number of years. It was purchased to replace a Dart GTS convertible that he had owned in the past. While it looks like a GTS, it’s actually a ’69 Swinger powered by a 273 small-block. He spent the better part of three years putting it together to the level that it’s at now. The GTS hood is actually a fiberglass piece that John found online. He calls this a NAPA Auto Parts restoration because he wasn’t chasing anything that was numbers matching.
1972 Plymouth Road Runner GTX David Graver; Oakmont, PA When Dave went looking for a Challenger back in 2010, he came home with this real-deal U-code ’72 Road Runner GTX. The body on the car was in pretty decent shape, however the original 440 was long gone. In its place is a 1969 440 that has been warmed up with 10.5:1 flat-top pistons, six-pack rods, a Comp Cams bumpstick, and an Edelbrock aluminum intake topped off with a Holley 750-cfm carb. It’s equipped with a 727 automatic and a 3.91:1 posi. Dave did a fair amount of work on the interior to bring it back to life, as that was its major weakness. Look for a full feature on this car soon.
1970 Chrysler Valiant VG Grant Musker; Malvern, PA This is what you call vintage Australian Chrysler performance. It’s a ’70 Valiant VG with a 245 Hemi inline-six cylinder and three Weber carbs. Grant is a transplanted New Zealander who’s been living stateside for the last three years and imported the Valiant from Australia in 2016. It was pulled from a garage in Queensland, where it had been sitting for 19 years. It was in exceptionally good condition, but he did do a rebuild on the engine and steering box. The best part is he uses it as a daily driver. Look for a feature on this car in the near future.
1967 Plymouth GTX Joe Medwick; Columbia, PA Joe is no stranger to nice Mopars and this ’67 GTX is another in a line of fine cars he owns. It was pulled from a garage many years ago and was fairly original right down to the numbers-matching drivetrain. His goal was to bring it back to life with an OE restoration. Once that task was started, it quickly became apparent that he had purchased a Bondo buggy that was actually quite rusty under all the shoddy bodywork. As a result, most of the sheetmetal was replaced on the car. The rebirth took the better part of three years to achieve and the paint was barely dry when we saw it out on the show field. Look for a full feature on this car in the near future.
1970 Plymouth Superbird Crazy Jack Struller; Passaic, NJ Owning a Superbird was a childhood dream of Crazy Jack, and in 1991 he bought this one as a non-running roller that had been sitting since 1974. When he pushed it into his garage it was placed on a lift and forgotten until 2016, when he got it back on the road. This bird still wears most of its original paint, however, the nose was replaced. As part of the purchase, the car came with an NOS nose, which Jack had repainted to match the rest of the car. It’s all numbers matching with only 23,000 miles on the odometer and gets driven regularly.
1969 Dodge Charger Dave Trevisan; West Chester, PA This ’69 Charger has been in the Trevisan family for a few decades. Dave’s brother used it as daily high school transportation, and was drag raced for many years after that, until it was parked. Dave bought the car from his brother in 2006 and set out to back half it to also go drag racing. That idea gave way to something more streetable, so he decided that a Viper engine would work and still provide plenty of power. The addition of the turbos came about when a friend of a friend had a set for sale at the same time he was about to get headers for the car. This has been a project that he has been building in his garage for over a decade. Look for a feature on this car in an upcoming issue.
1971 Plymouth ’Cuda Michael Bezick; Schnecksville, PA Michael inherited this ’71 Cuda in 2006 on his 21st birthday, but it has been in his family since 1992. It’s technically a numbers-matching 340 car with the N96 Shaker option and the V6R stripe options. The car was complete when purchased, however, at some point in time the original 340 developed a compression issue in one of the cylinders so it was pulled and put away and another 340 built up in its place. It was sent to Ray Barton for the rebuild and is now stroked to 416 ci. It’s also running Holley Sniper EFI in place of the Thermoquad.

What You Missed at the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals
Across the street from the main show field at the recent Carlisle Chrysler Nationals, at the indoor Expo Center was a very special display, the Carlisle Hurst Nationals, now in its second year. The brainchild of GSS Suoercars’ Larry Weiner (which builds current Hurst-branded Chrysler 300s and Dodge Challengers) and Carlisle Event’s Ed Buczeskie, the display brought together more than two dozen of the most significant Hurst prototypes and production cars, every year of the Hurst Oldsmobiles, their collaboration with AMC – the 1969 SC/Rambler and 1970 Rebel Machine – and what’s of most interest to Mopar Muscle readers, almost a dozen Hurst-built 1968 Hemi Darts and Barracudas, celebrating their 50th birthday at this year’s Hurst gathering.
Two of the highlights of this year’s gathering were the appearances of two Hurst legends, the first Lady of Motorsports Linda Vaughn and Hurst Hemi Under Class driver Bob Riggle. Both Linda and Bob signed autographs for the two-day event. On Saturday, Bob fired up the Hurst Hemi Under Glass – the same car, now rebuilt, that he rolled last year with Jay Leno in the passenger seat. Both were crowd pleasers. (Of note, long-time Hurst Hemi Under Glass owner Bill Sefton completed the sale of the car at the show to well-known Hurst collector Joe Spagnoli, feeling that it was time that the car and its legacy moved on to a new owner. One of Sefton’s other cars, a hellacious 1971 Dodge Demon was profiled earlier this year in Mopar Muscle.)
It is believed that 80 Darts and 50 Barracudas were built under the Chrysler-Hurst collaboration. The Darts were built under the L023 option code.
Cars without engines, transmissions, exhaust components, shifters, and driveshafts were shipped to the Hurst facility in Madison Heights, Michigan to be outfitted. All were powered by hand-built 426 Hemi engines assembled and supplied by Chrysler’s Marine and Industrial Division.
All the cars benefited from a series of weight-saving measures that included a fiberglass hood with a functional hood scoop and fenders acid-dipped steel doors with thin Chemcor-supplied plastic side-window glass. To save more weight, the window regulators were removed so that the windows pulled up via a strap. The interior included only two bucket seats from a Dodge van. The center console, heater, sound deadeners, side-view mirrors, radio, carpeting, and even armrests were deleted to save weight. All in, the Hemi Darts weighed just about 3,000 pounds.
Chrysler’s engineers and marketing materials supplied to dealers stated the new Hurst Hemi A-Bodies would reach speeds of 130 mph in less than 11 seconds and quarter mile times in the 10-to-11 second range. In the hands of top Mopar drivers like Dick Landy, the cars far exceeded these modest expectations, typically delivering times in the nines. This ushered in the Golden Age of NHRA super stock competition, representing one of the high-water marks of factory participation in drag racing’s stock classes.
In a funny quirk in the way the cars were marketed, an included sticker on the glove box indicated that the car was not for use on public roads, saying, “This vehicle was not manufactured for use on public streets, roads or highways, and does not conform to Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.” But for a time, in-period, some were.
The as-delivered price for all this Mopar goodness back in 1968? About $4,500. That’s $35,000 in 2018 dollars, about the price of a 2019 Dodge Challenger V-6. That makes the 1968 Hurst Chrysler A-Bodies one of the greatest muscle car bargains of all time.

Original Or Re-Creation Muscle Cars?
By Dave Ashton
If you’re a fan of muscle cars, especially late 60s and early 70s models you probably have a dream vehicle in mind, which you always wanted to own. However, the rarest options vehicles are completely out of your price range. Would you opt. for a near as perfectly re-creation or simply buy an all original model for what you can afford?
This is clearly down to your own personal preference and budget, but if you find a vehicle that has been restored and recreated with all the correct OEM parts of the era, you can get the same experience, just without paying the astronomical prices of the rarer models. Here we have 2 listings for a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Hemi and a 1969 HEMI Dodge Dart. with these type of vehicles there is a fine line between a total recreation and a restomod sometimes things like a fuel injection system and better brakes and suspension make more sense, especially if you want to have the car as a regular driver.
First up is the 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Hemi at an asking price of $125,000.00. Expensive but still nowhere near the price of a rare optioned Challenger R/T convertible. It ticks all the boxes having a 426 425HP Hemi V8 engine, 727 Automatic Transmission and all the OEM parts to make it as close to the original as possible. It also comes with the original docs.
youtube
BUY NOW ON EBAY.
Next up is a 1969 Dodge Dart which has been built to recreate a street legal Super Stock 68 SS/AA Dart with period correct 426 Hemi V8 engine. Like the Challenger above it has the 727 Torque flight transmission. This listing gives far more details and is arguably not to be a like for like recreation, but has added some modern bits here and there to get the best from this build.
It has an asking price of $55,000.00 and arguably comes into more of the restomod or promod category than like-for-like regeneration, but as a regular driver this may fit the bill better. Both vehicles are clearly in fantastic shape as reflected by their asking prices.
Full spec. for the Dart – BODY & PAINT Urethane 2 stage paint Fiberglass hood and scoop All lights and horns are functional Chrome in excellent condition Repaired minor chip in front windshield (see photo)
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION 1968 Date coded 426 Hemi (estimated 500+ h.p.) Rare Magnesium cross ram intake manifold 2 Holley 650 carburetors Hydraulic cam (not a roller) Ceramic coated headers Magniflow mufflers with 3” exhaust MSD 6 AL and distributor Holley electric fuel pump Pete Jackson gear drive (noisy) Custom made Stainless steel 16 gallon gas tank 727 Torque flight transmission Reverse manual valve body ATI 3000 stall convertor Transmission cooler Fairbanks shifter Powermaster starter

This is not really a comparison between these two vehicles, but more to give you an idea of how you can pay a lot less for a re-creation or restomod, than yearning for a lifetime for an out of reach original. If we could jump back to the early 80s where you could pick up a muscle car for next to nothing, that would be great. But as prices ever increase in the muscle car market base models, re-creations and restomodss can have just as much enjoyment and worth as the rare originals and still be driven regularly without the worry of the slightest paint chip.

Yenko, COPO, Hemi, Savage GT and More Rarities Fill the Barn Finds & Hidden Gems Display at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals
One of the things we like so much about the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals is that it is a perfect microcosm of our entire hobby, all captured under one roof. It’s a multi-make show that fully covers the Big Three but runs way deeper—even to Studebakers in some years. You’ll find beautifully preserved original cars and megabuck restorations. There are purely stock cars and cars from the Pure Stock Drags. Cars for sale and cars that will never be for sale. Cars with fully documented history and cars that are a total mystery. Cars you know and cars you never knew existed.
Any muscle microcosm these days has to include the ever-popular barn finds. The Barn Finds & Hidden Gems display at MCACN never ceases to amaze. Automotive Archaeologist Ryan Brutt carefully curates this corner of the show, bringing out treasures he has learned about—and often documented on his various social media platforms—during his regular travels across the country. As can happen these days, some of the cars stretch the definition of barn find a bit. There are cars that were never really lost per se but have been in storage for decades in a state of benign neglect. But Brutt also manages to dig up (and out) cars from actual barns, some still decorated with the detritus left behind by various species of vermin. Weirdly enough, this is one portion of one car show where an occasional petrified mouse just adds to the charm.
Here are some of the highlights from the Barn Finds & Hidden Gems display at MCACN 2017. Want more? The next Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals takes place November 17-18, 2018, at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois, right next door to Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. Visit mcacn.com for more show info.

Doug Perry helped is friend Jason Ball find his dream Fathom Green COPO Camaro several years ago, so Ball returned the favor by telling Perry about this Yenko Camaro. It took almost a whole year for Perry to reach the owner, and he finally bought it just 2 1/2 weeks before bringing it to MCACN. Perry is the car’s fifth owner; the previous owner bought it in 1999 and had kept it with other cars in a pole barn. With 23,000 original miles, the Camaro “was more played with on the street than raced,” says Perry. “It was always pampered, never outside. The paint is almost all original except on the hood and the quarters where the flares were added.” At some point the motor was decked, so no numbers are visible for Perry to determine whether it’s original to the car; he does know the M21 transmission is not. The Camaro sports a Ram Rod shifter, Lakewood traction bars, Ansen Sprint wheels, and Drag Radials “that are hard as a rock,” says Perry. He plans to sort it out to race it at this year’s Super Car Reunion.
Galen Govier calls this the “Holy Grail of Dodge Darts.” Back in 1969, Car Craft magazine covered the buildup of this car over several issues and then offered it as a sweepstakes prize. Keith Black built the 340, Funny Car driver Charlie Allen did the suspension, and none other than George Barris painted it. Bill Shrewsberry raced the car before the giveaway and set an AHRA record in it. A 16-year-old kid won the car, but he never took possession, opting instead to exchange his winnings for—of all things—a Polara wagon. Tom Ellie, the car’s seventh owner, bought it at the Robert Gabeline auction in Iowa last June, after Gabeline had owned it for 26 years.
Ric Vanlerberghe (of Ric’s Restorations near Detroit) has a long history with this real-deal L78 Camaro, as it was owned by a high school friend back in the late 1970s. He crossed paths with the car again some 15 years ago, when he was asked to check out an old Camaro in a barn. “It was up against a wall, and I couldn’t get a real good view, but when I opened the hood and saw the big-block engine, I about had a heart attack right there.” Vanlerberghe worked for years to buy the car, even started collecting N.O.S. parts for a restoration, but the owner wouldn’t budge. Never did, in fact. His stepson brokered the deal with him last summer after the owner passed away. Prior to its storage the car had achieved some infamy as a local street racer; the son of a previous owner put the dent in the front fender when he hit a telephone pole trying to get away from the police. Under the Mickey Thompson valve covers and aftermarket carb is the Camaro’s born-with 375hp 396; behind it is the original M21 four-speed and rearend, although it now houses 5.13 gears. Vanlerberghe wants to restore the Camaro but may add some day two parts in a nod to its past.
According to its current owner, Cecil Montgomery, George Hurst himself took delivery of this 1970 Chrysler 300H prototype and took it back to his shop to experiment with it a bit. He tried a deep bronze poly exterior paint with white accents, didn’t like the combination, and so resprayed the car white. He also mocked up a Hurst four-speed shift lever on the automatic transmission, and added a sunroof after seeing one on a Pontiac. That roof, though, was put in after press and publicity photos were taken of the car, which is why it doesn’t show in the promotional materials. The car was partially disassembled in 1975, and Montgomery bought it in pieces about four years ago. He plans a full rotisserie restoration, and has already restored the very rare Kelsey Hayes wheels, which have magnesium centers and hoops with magnesium fronts and steel rears.
“Old Deadeye” was lettered on the side of this 1969 COPO Camaro RS when it was raced in the late 1960s. According to current owner Mike Spray, it was purchased new by a Maryland construction company and raced by the son of the company’s owner. Spray said it was “the winningest Camaro in the area,” but the son, who was a “19 or 20-year-old kid, partied a lot, so the dad took it away and sold it.” The car sat for decades in North Carolina. “It was a big fish, but nobody had the tackle.” Nobody, that is, until Mike Kaiser of Arizona Muscle Cars came along. Spray bought it from him about a year ago. The engine is not original but is built around a date-code correct block, which is perfect for Spray, as he’s driving the car. A restoration is not planned.
Ryan Degenhardt is just the third owner of this 1968 Hemi Super Bee, which was a street racer in the St. Louis area before it was stolen in 1971. It was eventually recovered—without its Hemi driveline—but after the original owner had been paid for the loss. So a local repair shop bought it, put a 318 in it, and drove it. “They never relicensed it,” says Degenhardt, “probably drove it on dealer tags, and when they were done they just shoved it in the back of their shop.” A friend bought it in 1996 and had it until Degenhardt bought it in 2015. Degenhardt plans a driver-quality resto on the car, which wears a set of Spyder wheels. “They’re sort of a Recall wheel knockoff made by Motor Wheel,” says Degenhardt, who owns eight sets of the rare aftermarket rims.
Little Joe was a very-early-build 1970 Buick GS that was delivered to race team owner Tom Rose in September 1969. It was part of Rose’s stable until the team disbanded in 1974, when Mark Busher bought it “and gave it a second life,” says current owner Larry Aldrich. Busher raced it into the early 1980s then parked it, and Aldrich bought it in 2003. That’s when Little Joe started its third racing life, running until 2008 when Aldrich “went in a different direction with my cars” and parked it. It has been in his barn ever since. The fiberglass front end, one of just three sets made, replaced the stock front fenders and hood in the early 1970s. Aldrich says the car was a test mule for Buick engineers at the time and had a “real badass” Stage 2 race motor with early Stage 2 head castings. Those heads are still in the car, now sitting atop a 464ci Electra block and helping it make about 710 hp, he estimates. The odometer shows just 1,636 miles, clocked (let’s all say it together) “a quarter-mile at a time.”
Katie Boerschinger’s parents were the second owners of this 360-powered 1974 ’Cuda, which brought both her and her brother home from the hospital after they were born. Katie’s parents parked the car in 1984 when they bought a more family-friendly Fury; and when the couple divorced, her mom got the ’Cuda, which went into storage for another four years. When it came time for Katie to learn how to drive, she had her eyes on a Mustang, but her mom offered her the ’Cuda, and she has been in love ever since. “I’m learning about it,” Katie says. “I want to make it pretty and shiny and fast.” It’s already a runner, as Katie drove it to Chicago from Delafield, Wisconsin—a rarity for any car in Ryan’s display.
Ever heard of a Savage GT? Neither had we until we talked to Jim Rhinehart at MCACN, who brought the car to the show for owner Bill Sefton. A Milwaukee company called Auto Craft prototyped the Savage GT in 1967, with plans to turn a Barracuda into a real road handler. It modified the suspension, sat the car on fat Dunlop radials, installed a roll bar, and changed the look of the car with a new front end, fiberglass hood, and ’glass decklid with a spoiler. It was to be offered with Mopar V-8s ranging from a 340 to a 440 (this was a 340 model). The cost was “a couple thousand more than a stock Barracuda,” says Rhinehart. But production didn’t begin until 1969, so close to the E-Body’s introduction that the cars immediately looked dated. Just 13 were made, and six are known to exist, Rhinehart says; this one was pulled out of a Wisconsin field in 2006.
Bill Sefton had two rare Mopars in the Barn Finds display. The second was this 1972 Demon, with a Mr. Norm’s supercharger mounted to its 340. Jim Rhinehart told us he first heard about the car back in 1991 when a friend called on a Sunday morning and told him the car was listed for sale in the Chicago Tribune. That friend bought the car and took it back to Colorado, where he sold it for a Lil Red Express pickup truck. Rhinehart found it and had it shipped back, “but I didn’t realize how bad it was,” he admits. It had been hit in the right rear and has new rear sheetmetal now. Sefton at one time owned five of these Mr. Norm’s Demons, and he still has two N.O.S Mr. Norm’s supercharger kits.
Kevin Mackay says his 1960 gasser-style Corvette has 36,000 “hardcore” miles on it. He traced its history back to 1962, when it was a white and black street-racing Vette with a fuelie motor. A later owner put it through its gasser transformation in 1966, with a straight front axle, a narrowed grille, metalflake bronze and gold paint, and a 396/TH400 swap out of a buddy’s drag-race Camaro. That owner parked the car in the 1970s until it changed hands in 2008; Mackay bought it in 2014. “It’s a real time capsule,” he says, “and it runs and drives. I just changed the fluids and the battery and it started right up. It’s more valuable as a nostalgia piece than a restored car.”
Hard to picture now, but Mike Fitzgerald’s Superbird was originally Petty Blue and powered by a 440 Six-Barrel mill mated to a 727 TorqueFlite. We look forward to seeing it after its rejuvenation by Magnum Auto Restoration.

Ultrarare 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T Hemi Convertible Bought, Sold, Then Bought Again 20 Years Later
The 1967 model year was pivotal in the North American specialty car market. Chevrolet and Pontiac introduced their Mustang-fighters. Mercury rolled out the Mustang-based Cougar. Over at Plymouth, the Barracuda was redesigned to compete better with the Pony.
The year also marked the introduction of the Coronet R/T. After the 1964 GTO’s auspicious start, plenty of competitors rode on its coattails, but not Dodge. When Dodge finally introduced the Coronet R/T in 1967, it was beyond being fashionably late, but it certainly arrived in high fashion.
It’s not like Dodge was lacking in hardware. Chrysler Corporation was famous for engineering prowess but was playing it safe in the mid 1960s after several missteps. For example, 1957 started out with the highest of highs with the “Forward Look,” only to lead to quality control woes due to production and labor issues. In 1961, new lows were reached thanks to atrocious style, as if someone forgot to tell Vice President of Styling Virgil Exner that the 1950s were over. The final straw came in 1962 thanks to redesigned fullsize Dodges (Dart and Polara) that were slightly downsized due to faulty intelligence. General Motors was rumored to have a smaller Chevy in the works, but the product of the speculation ended up being the compact Chevy II, not new fullsize models. This led to an 11th-hour redesign that bastardized Exner’s original designs and resulted in somewhat goofy styling.
The upside to this was the all-new 413 Ramcharger Max Wedge, which helped bring Dodge to the forefront at the drags thanks to a fortuitous combination of lighter weight and prodigious power. Mopar fans like to think of the Ramcharger Dodge and its Super Stock Plymouth twin as the first muscle cars, which makes sense when you compare a 1962 Dart with the 1964 GTO: 116-inch wheelbase versus 115; 202-inch length versus 203. By the time the GTO debuted, fullsize Dodges featured a wheelbase bump to 119 inches and length up to 209.8, much closer to competitive fullsizers at the time. Dodge offered a 330hp 383 and an all-new 365-horse 426 High Performance Street Wedge that were more in spirit with the GTO, but the GTO initiated a shift in the performance market. Not only did Pontiac take it from the track to the street, but Pontiac gave the GTO a distinct identity.
And then came the copycats. Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Buick, plus Ford and Mercury, offered their own versions of the GTO by 1965-1966, but Dodge continued to play it safe with the new midsize Coronet (itself related to the 1962-1964 Dodges). It could be said that the introduction of the Street Hemi in 1966 gave Dodge the image it needed, but total sales between the Elephant Motor and the more affordable 325-horse 383 barely registered on the radar.
For 1967 Dodge felt it was time to use the GTO’s formula, and the Coronet R/T checked all the boxes. Inspired name? Check. Hoodscoop? Check. Prominent badges? Check. High trim level? Check. Horsepower? Impressive check. Image and style? In spades! Not only did the Coronet R/T have a name that implied a car suitable for road and track, but it also featured the largest performance engine in the industry—standard!
The 440 had been introduced in 1966 for the fullsize Polara and Monaco, but Dodge upgraded it in 1967 specifically for the Coronet R/T (and as an option for the fastback Charger). While the basic 440 featured 350 hp, the R/T’s new 440 Magnum featured larger exhaust valves, a longer-duration camshaft, a special four-pot carb, and low-restriction exhaust manifolds (something the 1964-1965 426 Street Wedge lacked). Horsepower was an impressive 375, which dwarfed the optional offerings from GM save the Chevelle’s 396/375. FoMoCo offered an underwhelming 390 and a sweet 427 for the Fairlane and Comet, but that’s where the Hemi came in. Dodge went all-in with the transmission selection too, making the esteemed TorqueFlite three-speed automatic standard, with a four-speed manual a no-cost option (although it required several mandatory options like Sure-Grip). Clearly the Dodge Rebellion was in full swing.
Inside, the Coronet R/T featured premium appointments with standard bucket seats available in black, white, dark blue, gold, red, or copper; a buddy seat or console was optional to fill the space in between. Reflecting the R/T’s sporty pretentions was a standard 150-mph speedometer, but the optional tach required the console. All power and convenience options were available on the R/T aside from typical incompatibilities like air conditioning with the Hemi or four-speed. All told, more than 10,000 were built, including 628 convertibles—not plentiful, but when combined with the Plymouth GTX, the image adjustment certainly paid off in reputation.
This white 1967 Hemi Coronet R/T convertible was originally bought by Rydal, Pennsylvania, resident M.S. Rubin from Jenkintown Dodge. He painted it green not long after buying it, then sold it to owner number two by 1970. It happened to catch the eye of a teen named Bill Weissman.
“I recall seeing it parked a few times at my high school parking lot in 1970-’71 in Northeast Philadelphia where I grew up,” Bill recalls.
By the mid 1970s, third owner Mike Addario gave the R/T its second repaint, now a green metalflake with red flames. He also added 12.5:1 pistons, a big cam, headers, a fuel line cooler, a big oil pan, a B&M floor shifter with a locked-out valve body, Line Lock, 4.56 gears, a three-point rollcage, and of course mags and slicks. The R/T now led a double life at Atco Dragway and World of Wheels shows.
In 1977, Bill bought a worn-out 1970 Hemi Challenger R/T. After getting it back on the road, he thought he’d try to find the owner of the Coronet R/T and see if he was willing to part with it. They couldn’t agree on a price, but several years later the R/T appeared in Trading Times and a deal was worked out. Bill’s R/T arrived home on Christmas Day 1983.
Over the course of two years, Bill worked to bring the rare R/T back to stock specs. Since the Coronet had been garaged, the body and interior were nearly perfect, needing only carpet replacement and a repair to one section of the rear seat where it had been cut for the Lakewood rollbar.
By contrast, some work was needed under the hood. Typical of the time, the engine compartment was painted black and holes were made for the aftermarket accessories. Bill stripped the paint, brazed the holes, and rigged up a makeshift paint booth in his garage to spray the engine compartment and fenderwells back to their proper Mopar selves. The body itself went to a paint shop where the correct Code W White was sprayed.
Bill says, “The chrome and brightwork were all so nice that nothing but the front bumper needed to be replaced because it had been modified so it could be flat-towed to the drag strip.” The original Hemi was tired, but a valve job, new pistons, and a factory-spec replacement cam ended up being all that was needed. The 4.56 gears had to go, but Bill went one step further because “every Hemi deserves a Dana.” Out went the original 8 3/4 rear (which originally held 3.23s), and in its place came a 3.54-geared Dana 60 plus driveshaft. By selling all the race parts at the flea market at Raceway Park in Englishtown, Bill was able to cover the cost of the engine rebuild and still have money left to purchase stock exhaust manifolds and a Hemi H-pipe.
Thanks to his membership with the Northeast Hemi Owners Association, Bill met fellow Hemi aficionado Anotol Vasiliev, who owned a 1969 version of the same car. Both men began participating in several regional and national events, such as the National Mopar Gathering in Ann Arbor and the Supercar Showdown in Quaker City. Bill also attended the East Coast segment of the MCR-sponsored Musclecar Nationals at Atco.
Says Bill, “My best timeslip was only a 14.2 at 99 mph, mostly due to the small tires and an untrained right foot.”
As with many of us, Bill found himself moving on to other projects. In the early 1990s he sold the R/T, but in 2014 he began to feel the itch for another Hemi. Nothing caught his eye until he stumbled upon a certain white Hemi Coronet R/T convertible on eBay, becoming its owner for the second time. Little had been changed by the three previous owners aside from a new coat of paint around 2010 and a fresh convertible top. Bill subsequently sorted out a few new things he didn’t do the first time around.
Currently showing under 30,000 miles, the R/T resides in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, where Bill is able to “give the old girl a little exercise on sunny days.” That included a trip to the “50 years of the Hemi” invitational at the 2016 Carlisle Chrysler Nationals.
For 1968, Dodge introduced a performance model that dressed down for the occasion: the Super Bee. This, along with the Plymouth Road Runner, demonstrated that although Dodge was initially slow to the punch, it rose to the occasion and began to dictate high-performance fashion that others simply had to follow.
At a Glance
1967 Coronet R/T Convertible Owned by: Bill Weissman, Egg Harbor Township, NJ Restored by: Owner Engine: 426ci/425hp Hemi V-8 Transmission: 727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic Rearend: Dana 60 with 3.54 gears Interior: Black vinyl bucket seat Wheels: 14×6 Magnum Tires: G70-14 Goodyear Polyglas Special parts: Less than 30,000 miles; one of three Hemi R/T ragtops known; current owner is both the fourth and eighth owner
The 1967 Coronet received a gentle facelift from the year before. The partially hidden taillights and trim, shared with the more pedestrian Coronet 500, mimic the Charger-influenced grille. Dodge’s signature delta theme shines through when the signals are illuminated.
The Coronet’s R/T badges suggested there was a 440 or Hemi sitting behind, with the latter receiving badges on the front fenders.
Despite having a true image car for 1967, Street Hemi production was less than half of 1966’s output. Records are incomplete, but it is known that at least four Hemi R/T convertibles were built.
Like all midsize muscle models at the time, the 1967 Coronet R/T featured premium furnishings. Buckets and a column-shifted automatic was the base configuration.
Owner 4 and 8
As sometimes happens, Bill Weissman bought, sold, and then bought this Coronet R/T again as his life circumstances changed, making him both the fourth and eighth owner of the Hemi-powered convertible. He shared with us some photos from his previous years of ownership.
Here is the ad third owner Mike Addario placed in an Atco Dragway flyer in 1978.
Bill dismantled the car’s racing mods and redid the cowl before sending the R/T to be repainted.
By 1986, the R/T was carrying Bill to events as far away as Michigan.
Here, Bill is parked next to “Mr. Hemi” Anotol Vasiliev’s 1969 Hemi R/T ragtop at the 1986 Mopars at Englishtown.

Only 640 of these bad boys were made in 1969. It features the biggest engine that could be dropped in the Dart for that year, a Magnum 440ci. V8 producing 375 HP and 480 lb-ft of torque. This example is unrestored, has had only one repaint in its life and comes with loads of documentation and racing history.
The engine is said to be a day correct replacement 440. and everything on the engine has been rebuilt, including the transmission, rear end, breaks, fuel and exhaust system. Therefore, this right should purr like a kitten for its next owner. Everything sits on Mickey Thompson Drag Radials tires on the rear and BF Goodrich radial T/A’s on the front.
The interior is as beautiful as the exterior with everything looking like it just rolled out of the factory. Its clear that someone has taken good care of this car over its lifetime and with less than 60 of these vehicles listed in the M Code Dart GTS registry, you are getting a fine example of the breed with as much documentation and back history as you can possibly get with a classic muscle car. Somebody’s going to be a lucky person who next owns this vehicle.
