La Chevrolet Camaro 1968 est une automobile de type pony car construite par General Motors. The Firehouse Find: A Massive Car Collection 70 Years in the Making!
People love pirate movies because deep down we all love the idea of a good treasure hunt. And if you’re a gearhead like us, that treasure is more likely to be hidden away in some forgotten garage instead of a wooden box with an ancient lock. Now, finding one car that’s been squirreled away is pretty cool, but what if you end up finding dozens? Well, these hoards of classic cars are still out there waiting to be rediscovered. A perfect example is what is being called the Firehouse Find. It’s a huge collection that will be going up for auction at the Chattanooga Mecum event in early October.
So how do so many cars end up being stored in one place like this? Like many of these stories, it started with a young man and his love of cars. John Force (who isn’t related to the racing legend) was 14 years old when he bought his first car for just 35 bucks! That was nearly 70 years ago, and that first car was only the start of what would grow into a collection numbering right around 70 vehicles stored in an old two-story firehouse. Force, now in his mid-80s, decided it was time for his beloved cars to find new homes, so his son Mike contacted Mecum to help with the logistics of selling so many classic cars, some of which haven’t moved in decades.
Force loved all cars, but his number-one passion was Ford Thunderbirds. We got the chance to visit the old Firehouse in Augusta, Georgia, where the collection has been housed, and Mike was able to show us around the two-story building. Let’s start off by saying we’ve never seen this many T-birds lined up in a private collection before. Most are in great shape, with just a light layer of dust tamping down their brilliance. Fourteen (and a half) T-birds are in the collection, most from the 1950s. They showcase just about every factory color option available.
As Mike led us through the rows of cars, we noticed that nearly every car has a backstory. One was a 1962 Pontiac Catalina (lot F8) that the family used for road trip vacations. This black 1956 Chevy Bel Air was dented when a worker who was fixing a leak fell through the roof and landed on the passenger door (lot F15). A lifetime of collecting cars often leads to a collection of stories.
One of the more offbeat rides is this 1978 Cadillac Seville customized by the Grandeur Motor Car Corporation in Florida. Back in the day, this was what you rolled in if you wanted your neighbors to know that you had made something of yourself. The neoclassically-styled Caddy suffered damage when someone broke into it because they heard Force stored his cash in the trunk. No cash was found, but the rare Opera Coupe was seriously damaged and pushed to the back of the shop where it has sat ever since. Check out Lot F24 for more details.
Though the collection is mostly ’50s-’60s-era classics, there are a couple newer cars in the mix. This 1989 Ford Mustang GT drop-top is super-clean with low miles. The 5.0 ‘Stang is heavily optioned, and, let’s be honest, it’s getting hard to find clean, unmolested Mustangs like this. What collection would be complete without a first-gen Camaro? Adding some variety is this 1969 Camaro RS/SS convertible. Fielding the 375-hp, 396-inch big-block, this Hugger Orange SS also has the preferable four-speed manual trans and a host of options such as orange Houndstooth interior and the RS package. Aside from a 1966 Mustang GT (K-Code) convertible and a 1965 drop-top ‘Stang, it’s the only classic ponycar in the collection. We also get the feeling that Force was a real lover of convertibles, since softtops dominate the collection.
I guess we should have included this 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7 in the above ponycar group, but this one is so cool it deserved its own mention. The Cougar was branded as a fancier Mustang (well, it did cost nearly 300 bucks more!) and a fully optioned Cougar XR-7 sold new for $4,500. Now that seems like a bargain, but in today’s money that’s nearly $40,000! The 1967 Cougar also has the distinction of being the only Mercury-brand car to win Motor Trend’s Car of the Year award! This one is powered by a 302-inch Windsor V-8 and is still rocking the original Philco AM radio. If you want to bid, and we know you do, find more info here. Corvettes are represented in the collection as well. Yeah, there are only three, but they are three good ones. This fuel-injected four-speed 1962 Vette (Lot F51) has all the right options. There’s also a 1966 Corvette convertible (Lot F5) that wears the right color and fields a 427 big-block engine backed up by a manual four-speed trans. Rounding out the Corvette trifecta is a 40th-Anniversary C4 Corvette (Lot F62). We must say that Force is a man of very good taste. The collection does weigh heavily on Force’s favorites, like Tri-Fives and T-birds, but it also has quite a few cars that we don’t see very often, like a 1971 Olds Cutlass Supreme, 1955 Buick Century, 1956 Continental MkII, 1954 Mercury Monterey, 1965 Buick Riviera, 1956 Ford Fairlane Sunliner, 1959 Olds Futuramic 88, 1957 Chrysler 300C, and many more. We have a soft spot for Bandit-era Trans Ams, so this one, next to a drop-top Cutlass, grabbed our attention. Alas, these two are the only cars from the collection not heading to the Mecum auction; instead they are destined for the garages of lucky family members. Still, over 60 cars and motorcycles are heading across the Mecum block in Chattanooga, and we’re sure these rediscovered treasures are really going to brighten someone’s day. Auto enthusiasts around the world can attest to the fact that muscle cars are an important part of motor vehicle history, specifically as it relates to speed driving. American muscle is essentially an American-made automobile that has a lot of power and offers really good acceleration capabilities. In 1964, the phrase "muscle car" was coined as a result of the introduction of mid-sized Pontiacs that came equipped with a new feature offering high-performance V8 engines. At the time, a fully equipped Pontiac GTO could run 0 to 60 mph in less than seven seconds. At that time, that was an awesome feat for any motor vehicle.
As the years went by, other motor vehicle manufacturers jumped in on this car craze, and names like Buick, Chevy, Dodge, Ford and Plymouth all released their version of these power race car. It became a significant trend at that time, and soon many motor vehicle enthusiasts were driving this powerful, yet affordable motor car.

So I have a 1968 camaro (base model, not a SS or RS) and I want to fix it. What type of engine should I put in it? via /r/cars
So I have a 1968 camaro (base model, not a SS or RS) and I want to fix it. What type of engine should I put in it?
I have been debating about what type of engine I should put in the car. I either way to put in a LS engine (cast iron or aluminum, it doesn’t really matter to me), a Chevy 350 engine, or try converting it to electric. I have no idea which one to use. They all seem like good ideas to me. The LS and 350 both are popular and are proven to be good, but electric motors have instant torque and can be just as good as the other two. Please help.
