"Contractual Teacher Granted Maternity Benefits: Gauhati High Court Overrules KVS Denial"
The Court allowed the writ petition and directed the petitioner to submit her claim for maternity benefits within 15 days.
The respondents were ordered to process the claim and disburse the entitled benefits, including any additional computation admissible under the Act of 1961, within two months of receiving the claim and the court's order
The court also set aside the communications of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghatan from July 2015 that denied her maternity benefits.

Mrs Sangeeta Kormel Yadav v. Union of India & 4 Others
WP No. 6973/2015
Before the High Court of Gauhati
Heard by Hon'ble Mr. Justice Nelson Sailo J
Background
Mrs. Sangeeta Kormel Yadav, a Master's degree holder in Political Science and Business Administration, was employed as a part-time contract teacher at Kendriya Vidyalaya, ONGC, Sivasagar. Her employment was on a contractual basis with artificial breaks between successive terms, from June 29, 2012, to March 4, 2015. After her last engagement ended on March 4, 2015, she delivered a baby on April 12, 2015. Prior to this, her husband had inquired through RTI whether contractual teachers were eligible for maternity benefits, to which the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) replied that maternity leave and benefits were only available to permanent teachers. Despite being off-contract at the time of her delivery, Mrs. Yadav sought maternity benefits under the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961.
Legal Issue
Whether a part-time contract teacher is entitled to maternity benefits under the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, despite the terms of her employment explicitly excluding such benefits.
Argument of the parties
Petitioner's Argument
Under the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, no distinction is made between permanent, temporary, or contractual employees regarding the entitlement to maternity benefits.
The petitioner claimed her right to such benefits under Sections 5 and 8 of the Act, relying on Supreme Court judgments that extended maternity benefits to casual, muster roll, or daily wage employees.
Respondent's Argument
As a part-time contract teacher, the petitioner was not eligible for maternity benefits under the rules and norms of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan.
The petitioner had signed an undertaking explicitly waiving any claim beyond her salary and agreed not to seek regular appointment or other benefits.
Court's Observation
Under the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, the benefits are available to all women employees, irrespective of the nature of their employment.
The petitioner's undertaking not to claim benefits could not override statutory provisions of the Act.
The court cited Supreme Court judgments that extended such benefits to contractual and daily wage employees, highlighting that any contractual agreement that limits these rights is overridden by the Act.

Incidents of taxation on Income earned by non residents in India depends upon his physical presence in India during last financial year. Whether an income earned by an individual in India or outside India, is taxable in India depending upon his stay in India rather than on his citizenship. Invariably, the person holding foreign citizenship remain under wrong impression that taking up foreign citizenship would help them for obtaining tax benefits. The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961

Black Scientists and Engineers Past and Present Enable NASA Space Telescope
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is NASA’s next flagship astrophysics mission, set to launch by May 2027. We’re currently integrating parts of the spacecraft in the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center clean room.
Once Roman launches, it will allow astronomers to observe the universe like never before. In celebration of Black History Month, let’s get to know some Black scientists and engineers, past and present, whose contributions will allow Roman to make history.
Tumblr media
Dr. Beth Brown
The late Dr. Beth Brown worked at NASA Goddard as an astrophysicist. in 1998, Dr. Brown became the first Black American woman to earn a Ph.D. in astronomy at the University of Michigan. While at Goddard, Dr. Brown used data from two NASA X-ray missions – ROSAT (the ROentgen SATellite) and the Chandra X-ray Observatory – to study elliptical galaxies that she believed contained supermassive black holes.
With Roman’s wide field of view and fast survey speeds, astronomers will be able to expand the search for black holes that wander the galaxy without anything nearby to clue us into their presence.
Tumblr media
Dr. Harvey Washington Banks
In 1961, Dr. Harvey Washington Banks was the first Black American to graduate with a doctorate in astronomy. His research was on spectroscopy, the study of how light and matter interact, and his research helped advance our knowledge of the field. Roman will use spectroscopy to explore how dark energy is speeding up the universe's expansion.
Tumblr media
NOTE - Sensitive technical details have been digitally obscured in this photograph.
Sheri Thorn
Aerospace engineer Sheri Thorn is ensuring Roman’s primary mirror will be protected from the Sun so we can capture the best images of deep space. Thorn works on the Deployable Aperture Cover, a large, soft shade known as a space blanket. It will be mounted to the top of the telescope in the stowed position and then deployed after launch. Thorn helped in the design phase and is now working on building the flight hardware before it goes to environmental testing and is integrated to the spacecraft.
Tumblr media
Sanetra Bailey
Roman will be orbiting a million miles away at the second Lagrange point, or L2. Staying updated on the telescope's status and health will be an integral part of keeping the mission running. Electronics engineer Sanetra Bailey is the person who is making sure that will happen. Bailey works on circuits that will act like the brains of the spacecraft, telling it how and where to move and relaying information about its status back down to Earth.
Learn more about Sanetra Bailey and her journey to NASA.
Tumblr media
Dr. Gregory Mosby
Roman’s field of view will be at least 100 times larger than the Hubble Space Telescope's, even though the primary mirrors are the same size. What gives Roman the larger field of view are its 18 detectors. Dr. Gregory Mosby is one of the detector scientists on the Roman mission who helped select the flight detectors that will be our “eyes” to the universe.
Dr. Beth Brown, Dr. Harvey Washington Banks, Sheri Thorn, Sanetra Bailey, and Dr. Greg Mosby are just some of the many Black scientists and engineers in astrophysics who have and continue to pave the way for others in the field. The Roman Space Telescope team promises to continue to highlight those who came before us and those who are here now to truly appreciate the amazing science to come.

To stay up to date on the mission, check out our website and follow Roman on X and Facebook.
Make sure to follow us on Tumblr for your regular dose of space!

Okay, I just saw Babylon, and I was trying to make a point to my mom on the drive back, but I don’t think I really succeeded, so I’m posting my thoughts here.
I love love love the time period this movie takes place in, the first half of the 20th century is my jam. BUT that time period was so racist you guys like I’ve seen some musicals from that era and I swear there’s blackface in every single one (and/or other horrible racial caricatures).
And I think it’s so important to NOT to shy away from that, because it was such a cornerstone in the construction of American cinema (entertainment, even) - like literally our cameras and film development were exclusively built around white skin, it’s that fundamental. Which was why I was so relieved they added that scene with Sydney where he’s asked to cork up and how we really lived in his betrayal and the grotesque-ness of it all, because I was so worried we were going to brush past it.
And part of me is glad that he quits right afterwards, because we love a guy who sticks to his principles, but part of me also wishes there were more attention paid to the people of color who didn’t quit, who either didn’t have the luxury or cared too much about the business to do so. Because this was kinda all they had if they wanted to be in the pictures, you know, they had to suffer through black/brown/yellow/red/whateverface, and caricatures, and fetishization, and white people taking their roles if they wanted to continue in the business. And sometimes they rose to a high enough status where they were able to influence things a bit, but not often.
I mean, I am glad with what we got with Sydney, but I don’t know, I guess I just wanted the movie to give a little more recognition to those pocs who persevered within the business, even when it did not care about them.

In 1961, April Ashley was enjoying a successful career as a high-fashion model, having just appeared in British Vogue, when she was forcibly outed as transgender by a tabloid. Immediately, all the work she had been getting dried up.
Tumblr media
April managed to pull herself along by marrying the son of a baron in Gibraltar, giving her the social status to live the life of a socialite. The marriage quickly fell apart, and April tried to enforce her right to an inheritance. The challenge led to a long, drawn-out court case to determine her gender. The court legally declared she was male, and set a precedent for trans discrimination that would stand for decades.
Tumblr media
Following the decision, Ashley left Britain to live a quiet life away from the headlines.
In 2005, she returned to a very different Britain. The Gender Recognition Act of 2004 meant that she could have her birth certificate amended to have her gender listed as "female." She became an activist and a celebrity. In 2012, she was awarded with an Order of the British Empire for "services to Transgender Equality."
