Red Velvet (Cup)cake
Okay so…. @sassy_c_art_shop sent me their prompt list for Fooduary and I was like… I have been a little bored of drawing men and pants over and over for the ASOIAF guys…maybe I could have a treat? So we’re taking a brief pause to do an extraneous food challenge bc apparently nothing beats art block like creating more work for yourself. Effectively I got the idea-worm of using historically-relevant fashion+human food character design and then I had to do it. Day 1’s prompt is red velvet cupcake and I love Red velvet cake, the cream cheese icing blew my mind as a child and it’s still my favourite cake to this day. Now the history of the red velvet cake can’t really be pinned down (get used to that lots of these can't decide on the dates of desert creation apparently) but velveteen cake is a turn of the last century invention and it is speculated that in Depression era America people were using beet juice as a sugar support/substitute which inspired the red twist to things. One source claimed that the first cookbook recipe for red velvet cake was from 1943 which is the ballpark fashion era I eventually decided on. What do you think? Does the inspiration shine through?

A quick introduction to 1940’s fashion
I've been so obsessed with Band of Brothers recently and I love reading the fanfics. Here’s my contribution, for your OC's.
(soon!) Part 2. Hair, makeup etc
(soon!) 1940's lookbook (photos)
The war had a major impact on 40's fashion. There were shortages and rations, and women were entering the workforce as men went off to war, leading to a more simplistic, utilitarian style.
Tumblr media
Rations and regulations:
In the UK, clothing was rationed from June, 1941 to March, 1949, in varying strictness. So although you still payed for clothing with money, you'd need coupons to be allowed to buy them altogether. In the US, the Regulation L-85 (1942), rationed natural fibers and restricted how clothing could be made in order to save fabric. This meant regulating the skirt length, the fullness of pants and jackets, and even banned cuffs.
Silhouette:
The early 40's silhouette had strong, boxy shoulders, but by the mid forties and as the restrictions grew more strict, the silhouette softened to save materials. A nipped-in and high waistline stayed popular for the whole decade, and a hemline below the knee was fashionable until 1947, when Dior came out with the "New Look".
Tumblr media
Fashion:
Because restrictions and shortages, the look was simple but stylish. Showy, over the top clothing was considered unfashionable to wear in wartime Britain.
The "military style" bled into every day fashion. It was common for men, who were not on active duty, to still wear bomber jackets, trench coats and aviator glasses. It's visible on women's fashion as well, which is why some of the clothing have a sort of a uniformly look.
Popular outfits for women were square-shouldered jackets with matching A-line skirts, shirtwaist dresses, and thanks to actresses, pants were now also a stable part of women's wardrobes. The pants had wide, straight legs and high waists, and were often paired with a colorful blouse or sweater and a matching jacket.
Hand knitting in Britain was at peak popularity during the war. Women on the home front were encouraged to "knit your bit" and contribute to the war effort by knitting for the troops. The warmth of woollen items also made knitwear popular for civilians.
Tumblr media
Working women:
Women were entering the workforce to replace men, who went off to war. This required more practical attire, such as sturdy shoes, head scarves, overalls etc.
Some jobs (such as the WAVES) felt it important to emphasize that women wouldn't become any less feminine by working or wearing a uniform. This is why makeup, nail polish and feminine hairstyles weren't just largely allowed, they were encouraged.
Actress Veronica Lake, famous of her highly imitated "Peek-a-boo" hairstyle, where her hair covers one of her eyes, encouraged women working in factories to tie their hair up into safer styles to avoid injury. In this Safety Styles video, she has her hair up in a "victory roll" style.

The New Look by Dior:
After the long war, and as life was slowly returning back to normal, there was a want of "returning to femininity" among women. At the same time, some women feared that this ultra-femininity would set back all the progress they had made working outside the home during the war.
In 1947, Christian Dior released a new collection called ”The New Look” which featured a full, calf-length skirt. After the simple lines of the utility clothing, such a dress seemed desirable by contrast. The full skirt was also controversial for how much fabric it used, since rationing in the UK wouldn't end for another two years and there were still material shortages in both UK and the US.
Despite the controversies, the New Look was hugely popular and became the predominant silhouette well into the 1950's.

A/N: To keep this short, I had to paste and delete like half of what this originally was onto part 2. Also, lmk if there's interest in men's fashion ver. of this!
Hopefully this was legible. All the ”not my first language blah blah” stuff <3

yall i came up with these drawings and the lore like, 15 minutes ago
idk smth smth hazbin hotel ocs balh blah blah hell stuff
here’s some info, ill be doing a few comics and doodles about these three!
mrs. dotty “dot” flinn (red background): the wife of mr. franky “frank” flinn (green background). mr flinn cheated on her with her best friend, elizabeth “lizzy” gordon (purple background), despite her being a loyal, loving, and womanly housewife. she checked off ALL of the boxes for women in the 1940s! why would he cheat?? ..simply because lizzy had a curvier body. in her frustration and anger, she took her husband’s butcher knife, brutally mutilating his body, cutting him up and selling his flesh like the pork cuts mr. flinn used to. she was eventually got just as she was about to finish disposing of the evidence, unfortunately sentenced to death on august 12th, 1943.
hell: she takes on a grey scale color theme, relating to the 1940s detective films. she uses blood to paint her lips and nails. her crazed face makes her less approachable, which drives her mad. she loves to interact, she’s very much extroverted, opposite of her ex-best friend, lizzy.
mr. franky “frank” flinn (green background): mrs. flinn’s ex husband! he worked as a butcher to support his wife, supplying plenty of money for the two. they didn’t plan to have children until they were extremely wealthy. mrs. flinn liked to have her best friend, lizzy, over at the house while he was away, often finding the two when he got home, mrs. flinn offering him his nightly glass of whiskey. due to her nice body, mr. flinn found himself more attracted to her than his own wife, leading to the two committing adultery, essentially marking him as a dirty cheater. he was murdered on a cold november night, friday 1942, in his own home.
hell: due to his..cheating and lying habits, he takes on a chameleon form. he struggles to hide how he’s feeling with this new and improved body, his lies obvious.
ms. elizabeth “lizzy” gordon (purple background): an unmarried woman, typically what is considered to be the “popular” girl within their community. she’s known for her sass and welcoming smile, which attracts a lot of men, but she always turns them down when they ask her out. shed rather gossip and drink with her best friend, dotty. surprisingly, she hates interaction, preferring silence around strangers. she couldn’t help but stare whenever dot’s husband was around, however, feeling an odd *attraction* to him, despite them having nothing in common and no prior knowledge of each other. one unfaithful night, she paired with him in mr. and mrs. flinn’s shared bed, getting away with this horrible secret for about two days before she squealed out of guilt. she felt terrible, deciding to give dot and frank some space to get it figured out, but little did she know that this would be the last time she’d ever see mr. flinn. sooner than later, she lost dotty as well, left alone in the living world.
to mrs. dotty’s misfortune, she and frank were reunited in hell, and much like vox and alastor, they’re constantly at each other’s throats, mr. flinn having an unhealthy obsession with mrs. flinn. their current relationship status is..unclear, but it is doubtful mrs. flinn will find another partner.
stay tuned for more!!

ok so recently i was looking at the dior spring couture 2021 collection and i noticed that this dress looked... oddly familiar
Tumblr media
it bothered me for months because i knew id seen this dress before, i just didn't know where.
until i was looking through some vintage sewing pattern boards on pinterest and found this late 40s - early 50s vogue pattern
Tumblr media
notice the dark green dress. did the designer from dior take inspiration from it? even the way the model is posed looks similar.
