How many of you know that banker, humanitarian and civil rights activist Maggie L. Walker lobbied Virginia Governor Westmoreland Davis and obtained funding for a separate hospital at Baker school, staffed by black doctors and nurses serving black patients who received disparate treatment during the 1918 flu pandemic. More than 1,000 people died from the flu in Richmond, Virginia during the fall of 1918.

Flu season is around the corner, are you prepared? The world wasn’t prepared in 1918 when this virus spread around all pockets of the world causing a huge wave of death. A very informative and enlightening read about the history of medical science and the evolution of influenza. Readable for all ages and perfect for anyone considering the medical profession. #gjhslibrary #1918flupandemic https://www.instagram.com/p/Bm4FIkOnZhK/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1k1gvev9jobiy
