Happy Founders to the Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.🖤💛💕💚❤️ Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (ΑΚΑ) is a Greek-lettered sorority, the first established by African-American college women. Membership is for college-educated women. The sorority was founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University by a group of sixteen students led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle. Together with the 9 original founder: Anna Easter Brown, Beulah Burke, Lillie Burke, Marjorie Hill, Margaret Flagg Holmes, Ethel Hedgemon (Lyle), Lavinia Norman, Lucy Diggs Slowe and Marie Woolfolk (Taylor), the seven, “The Sophomores: Norma Boyd, Ethel Jones (Mowbray), Alice Murray, Sarah Meriweather (Nutter), Joanna Berry (Shields), Carrie Snowden and Harriet Terry. along with the incorporators Julia Evangeline Brooks, Nellie Quander, Nellie Pratt Russell, and Minnie B. Smith. Forming a sorority broke barriers for African-American women in areas where they had little power or authority due to a lack of opportunities for minorities and women in the early 20th century. AKA was incorporated on January 29, 1913. Alpha Kappa Alpha® is comprised of more than 325,000 initiated members in graduate and undergraduate chapters located in 12 countries including the US, Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Dubai, Germany, Japan, Liberia, Nigeria, South Korea, South Africa and the US Virgin Islands. Led by International President & CEO Danette Anthony Reed, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, often is hailed as “America’s premier Greek-letter organization for African American women.” Members have improved education through independent initiatives, contributed to community-building by creating programs and associations, such as the Mississippi Health Clinic, and influenced federal legislation by Congressional lobbying through the National Non-Partisan Lobby on Civil and Democratic Rights. lets talk about jade hair color choice for tonight as it serves a valuable lesson that many of you guys might not know about. jade's hair is a homage to her greek sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

a backstory about the historic sisters:

they were first black sorority to ever be established. the AKAs broke ground in 1908 at Howard University. they came to fruition at a time where black women (and men) were not allowed into white sororities or fraternities. because of Alpha Kappa Alpha and Alpha Phi Alpha, other poc frats and sororities exist today.

their colors are salmon pink and apple green and have many notable and famous sorors such as Kamala Harris, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Bernice King.
