In music tech knowing the specs of the various inputs you are using is not only incredibly useful, but imperative to know. This is because you have to know if the certain piece of equipment you want to use/ buy is actually usable with the computer you have. Because if it isn’t you’re going to be sinking money into a piece of software that you can’t even use. This is why when looking for audio interfaces I tried to look for equipment that matched with the specs that I had on my PC, or other technology that I can use to produce and mix. The two audio interfaces I had found were the TC-Helicon GO SOLO Audio/MIDI Interface for Mobile Devices, and the Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 3rd Gen USB Audio Interface. For the TC-Helicon it is for Mac or IOS. The OS for this is supported on either IOS or Mac, since it's more for phones though, it's mainly used on IOS. For the processor I could not find anything however, I did find that the A/D resolution is 24 bit/ 48kHz. When it comes to connectivity it supports USB, specifically a 1 x Mini-B.This would be a great buy for my setup because it allows me to work on projects on the go, and if I have an idea, or a certain thing I want to do for my project, but I’m out or not near my computer, I can just plug the interface into my phone and record through there. The next piece of tech I found, as I stated before, was the Scarlett 18i8. The Scarlett 18i8 is supported on both Mac and Windows. The requirements for the OS in order to use the interface on a Mac is a macOS 10.12 or later, and the OS requirements for Windows is Windows 7 SP1 or later, and in order to run the added avid pro tools subscription you need Windows 10 v1809 or later. Once again there was no processor listed, but the A/D resolution is up to 24-bit/192kHz. For computer connectivity unlike the TC-Helicon, it uses USB 2.0, however the USB plug in it uses is USB-C. This would be a great addition to my setup because I don’t have any way to record audio for vocals/ guitars, so it would be great to have to record acoustic instruments, and to have a more realistic tone to various instruments I want to use.

Someone's Trying To Fully Restore That Obscure Super Mario Anime

So, as one does when one runs a Twitter account that's centered on video games, I tried to be "part of the conversation" by participating in this year's Mario Day. Generally speaking I avoid hopping on the bandwagon, yet I like retweets as much as the next person, so as with all other similar situations, I use the chance to unload everything that happens to be related and which I've been saving for some time now.

In this case, a ton of various odds & ends from suppermariobroth & smallmariofindings that's been in my war chest of stuff to post... Point being, the day (which might be one of the fakest of fake holidays to be concocted by some company's marketing department in recent memory) was hardly special. That was until I came across a Twitter account belonging to one Stian Schultz.

I honestly don't know much about Stian; he has a homepage that has a few precious morsels of personal information, largely due to the fact that much of his official web presence is apparently offline. Though the placeholder, I guess, tells us that he's based out of Norway and runs a company that handles Norwegian/English video game translations.

I plan on reaching out to him shortly after I publish this point... or maybe I'll wait till this coronavirus deal blows over, not sure which first yet... cuz I need more info on what Stian is doing. Something that has me so excited that I absolutely needed to say something ASAP (yes, this is a transparent attempt at me going "I saw it first"; at a time in which everyone is hunting for game culture artifacts, you basically have to lay your claim ASAP as well).

Anyhow, are you familiar with the Super Mario Bros.: Peach-Hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen!? It's an anime circa 1986 and is a loose translation of the very first Super Mario Bros. According to its Wikipedia entry: "It is notable for being the first movie based on a video game, predating the live-action Super Mario Bros. movie by seven years." And a self professed video game cinephile... that sounds about right actually.

Here it is for those who haven't seen it...

... The above claims to be "Restored" & "Best Quality!", with both descriptors being technically true. At least for right now. But Stian is in the process of fully restoring the rather obscure anime. Actually, from the sounds of it (again, I hope to get more details eventually), it's a project that's been in the works for some time now.

To make it happen, Stian is utilizing elements hailing from "Two VHS tapes, vinyl soundtrack and single, and a cell comic. All digitized through an LG RC185 and an ION iTTUSB Turntable."

Though the heart of it is an 16mm print! Not only that, but also: "The vinyl soundtrack has been re-ripped via a combination of this rega turntable, hooked up through a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 via a rega Fono Mini A2D pre-amp (which has it's own USB interface, but I prefer the Focusrite)."

At the very top of this post is one of scanned frames. Some additional intel: "I want to avoid using DNR filters (no Disney level detail butchery on my watch). Thankfully, since the movie is basically done in doubles, it's very easy to clean up dust/lint -- even horrible splices like this -- by simply using the nearest frame as a partial donor/match.

In the same sequence, despite the tape harming an identical frame, there's still matching duplicates available to use as donors, making it very easy to remove dirt -- and even the tape itself -- whilst [simultaneously] keeping as much of the original frame intact as possible."

"For those curious about technical stuff: Each frame in the current editing flow is at a resolution of 2736x2192(!). The project folder is currently at nearing 300gb(!!). Each manually edited frame is a 22.9 MB tif."

Once again, this all so crazy awesome that I had to share! I hope to sooner or later speak with Stian and provide a closer look at the history of the project, specifics regarding the workflow, and more! Also, apologies in advance if this is old news; been so damn busy with grad school that I haven’t been on Tumblr proper in ages.

Project Overview

For my senior project I am going to choose 3 childrens books and make them crisp audiobooks. But instead of having the voice of the narrator on its own, I plan on going farther by sound designing the big events that take place, adding a score to each of them and putting them in video format with scrolling visuals of each page. I chose this project because I feel that having the ability to edit narration for audiobooks or podcasts is an extremely important skill in the current state of entertainment. I also feel as though I have not dedicated the time to writing instrumental scores as much as I have in my personal songwriting. Along with the sound design aspect of this project I hope to fill in some of my gaps as an engineer and composer.

For milestone one I plan to have all of my books selected and narration tracked. I have an Aston spirit large diaphragm condenser microphone, a kaotica eyeball isolator, and a focusrite 18i8 in my apartment so I shouldn’t have any problem getting quality vocal recordings from home. I also think recording and coaching people that have never been in front of a microphone is always great practice. Having all the narration tracked and mixed by February 2nd is a totally reasonable amount of work for that date.

Milestone two is when I would like to have all the music tracked and placed as well as concrete ideas for the parts of the stories that need sound designing. Mapping out the scores and making sure that they line up with the ups and downs of the story and the narrator is what I believe is going to take the most time. I will likely have to track with the narration in specific parts to make sure it has the comforting natural flow required for a childrens audiobook. Acoustic guitar, various synths, 808s and virtual instruments will likely make up the majority of the scores.

Finally, for milestone three I will have the sound design aspects of the project and the scores mixed down with the narration. For the sound design parts of this project, I will be using soundly and recordings of my own to bring the stories to life. After of the Incredibles project I now have a better ability to visualize the sound I need and properly layer sounds to achieve what I’m looking for. Once the mixes are done I’m going to post them on YouTube as a video with each page scrolling as a visual. I think that having the visual along with the mixes will fill out the sensory experience making it even more engaging for anyone listening or viewing.

I think this project will take the perfect amount of time to complete. It will line up nicely with the class due dates while challenging me in areas that I need to work on. After school I would like to use these books as resume pieces showing my ability to score, record, produce, design, and mix. I feel that narration and podcast mixing is a very important skill for people entering the music tech and engineering field today. With the catalog of music I’ve written and produced as well as experience working in studios, I think I’ll have the solid resume I’ve always wanted.

Combat, Tools of the Trade, and Cars.

Abriell is not built for fighting.   The combination of osteoporosis,   hemophilia,   and a compromised immune system make her very vulnerable to injury and infection,   and any injuries she receives are much more likely to be fatal.   This given she tends to avoid straight fights,   favoring traps,   ambushes,   or directing sturdier individuals whenever possible.   Unfortunately such solutions aren’t always feasible,   in which case she falls back on the use of small caliber and low-recoil firearms to deal with threats up close and in person.   Over the years Abriell has narrowed down her preferred weapons to a relatively short list while still covering a variety of uses,   making it easier to keep stocked on ammunition and parts than if she were to use a wider variety.

Abriell’s list of other equipment is quite extensive,   and it’s effectively impossible for her to keep it all on hand at any given time.   It’s vital for Abriell to have as much information as possible before leaving for a job in order to best plan what equipment is going to be most useful.   In the best circumstances a missing piece of equipment can be worked around,   in the worst it could lead to disaster.   Abriell’s tool kit covers a massive range of utilities and uses,   from mold-able plastic explosives and detonators to common steel nails and rope.

The transport of Abriell’s weapons and equipment obviously requires reliable vehicles,   of which she has two.   For day-to-day travel,   local jobs,   and easy lightweight work Abriell drives a 2013 Volkswagen Passat B6 sedan.   The Passat’s engine has been modified to run on pure ethanol,   and the trunk features a false bottom under which she can hide illegal items.   For more demanding situations Abriell also owns a 2015 Ram 1500 imported from the United States.   The 1500 has been modified further than the Passat,   featuring an extended bed supported by a second rear axle,   a slide-out storage compartment beneath the bed,   and an aftermarket off-road suspension.   The rear half of the 1500′s cab has been gutted for increased storage space and,   like the Passat,   its engine has been modified to run on ethanol.
