#laquanmcdonald 17, a foster child, who was described as outgling, jovial, talkative, and funny, was shot 16 times in October 2014 in Chicago. He overcame a rough childhood, liked basketball and was a committed student Who showed up to his alternative school every day. There is a #hulu documentary #16shots currently airing. It took until November 2015 (13 MONTHS) to get dashcam video which captured the fact he was shot shooting 16 times! Many shots fired when he was already on the ground! Protests followed including a die in where college student protestors laid down on the sidewalk outside the county building. This was after police superintendent was fired. The justice department headed by Loretta Lynch began an investigation and Mayor Emanuel announced Task Force on Police Accountability. Officer was eventually indicted with six counts of 1st degree murder and one count of official misconduct. Two officers whose reports contradicted the dash cam video got desk duty. The officer who shot Laquan was suspended without pay and was hired as a janitor by the city's police union. A lieutenant and Deputy Chief retired. It was alledged that Laquan approached the officer with a knife but the video did not show that. One week suspensions were given to four officers. The shooting officer was charged with 16 counts of aggravated battery, one for each shot fired. Three officers were charged with conspiracy, official misconduct and obstruction of Justice for covering up the shooting. In October 2018, officer was found guilty of 2nd degree murder and 16 counts of aggravated battery but not guilty of official misconduct. Three other officers were acquitted of conspiracy, official misconduct, and obstruction of justice. In January 2019, the shooting officer was sentenced to almost 7 years in prison but only has to serve 3 and 1/2 because the judge found the 2nd degree murder conviction to be more serious and merged the aggravated battery convictions into the sentencing.
