Did you notice Knives Out playing one of the greatest marketing tricks Hollywood has ever seen?

All the trailers put Daniel Craig and his ridiculous accent front and center, with Chris Evans and Christopher Plummer as featured credits — and then the central character of Knives Out, surprise, is actually an immigrant woman of colour played by an all-but-unknown actress from Cuba*. I don’t think the film would have sold as well had it been honest about its central character. It sold itself based on its recognizable white male stars. And that was fuhking genius. Knives Out has a lot to say about race, gender, care work and immigration, but movies ABOUT those things don’t get popular unless they are brilliant. So Knives Out told us it was a campy detective film starring James Bond and Captain America, and it made a 700% return on its budget. People who never would have sat down for a movie about class discrimination sat through Knives Out.

I think it’s really fascinating to compare Knives Out with Parasite in particular, which came out the same year and is generally considered to be not only the best film of 2019, but possibly the best film of the entire decade**. I absolutely love both of these movies for what they are, and I think they’re both masterful and would happily watch them both again. The thing is that to me, Parasite is like...a medium-defining masterpiece, like an utterly perfect piece of cinema, and so it’s “better” than Knives Out in the sense that a 15/10 is better than a 10/10. They were both nominated for Best Original Screenplay and I’d have been delighted if Knives Out had won, except, you know... Parasite.

Both these movies are actually dealing with a very similar topic, which is the ever-growing class divide. Knives Out settles for a more classic yet still nuanced and pertinent depiction of the money-grubbing, backstabbing rich, while Parasite prefers to show the myopia and ignorance of the 1% and how that blindness sets the poor at each other’s throats. Unlike Knives Out, which can hide behind Kentucky fried Daniel Craig, Parasite can’t hide what it’s about: the actors are all people of colour, speaking a non-English language, and the mysterious blurbs for the film usually just say it’s about “a rich family and a poor family” to avoid spoiling the insanely brilliant plot.

Okay, so Parasite is a universally-lauded complete masterpiece while Knives Out is just an uncommonly good movie — but Knives Out’s box office gains still outstrip Parasite’s by about $40 million. Even more damningly, Knives Out made $165 million in North America while Parasite has grossed about $53 million in the same territory, with about $5 million of that coming from a post-Oscar Best Picture bump. $75 million of Parasite’s gross comes from within South Korea.

So, my point here isn’t that “North America is racist more people should see Parasite.” (Well, it’s not *just* that, because everyone should see Parasite.) My point is more complicated. So, we have two movies here with messages about class struggle. One of them was a very good movie that hid its messages through sneaky trailers, obfuscated its own diversity, sold itself as a detective romp, and made bank. The other movie is one of the best movies ever made, and even after it proved that by breaking Oscar records, by being so good that even the Academy couldn’t deny it Best Picture despite the notorious old boys’ club running the place, it still made considerably less money.

I’m not saying Parasite failed to reach its audience, because it IS a very culturally-specific movie — there’s a lot in there about language (who speaks Korean vs who speaks English and the power that reflects), history (North Korea comes into it) and even some jokes about the actors in the film that audiences outside South Korea wouldn’t get at first blush. And apparently like a fifth of South Korea saw it, so....yeah, that worked. But in order to reach beyond that, it had to be one of the best movies anyone had ever seen. Knives Out, meanwhile, was a genre movie that wasn’t afraid to lie in marketing to attract people who wouldn’t necessarily be receptive to its message. It reached the James Bond demographic despite carrying a much more socially critical message than Casino Royale. Parasite’s brilliance is something we can all learn from just by its utterly virtuosic filmmaking technique; but Knives Out’s trick is something we can all exploit just by thinking about our back-of-the-box blurbs, about how we pitch our stories, and how we hook people in. You could make a brilliant movie with diversity and social commentary — you could make Parasite (or Moonlight, or Carol). Or you could slip your diversity in, cover it with someone from the Famous White Chris Club, and reach people you wouldn’t otherwise. I really do think we need both strategies, and because I like genre fiction so much, I lean toward the latter. Going to Knives Out and seeing Ana de Armas at the middle of it was such a stunningly wonderful surprise,*** and I want that to happen to me again and again, until it’s not a surprise anymore.

Also, if you’re one of those people looking at famous people-on Twitter and just @‘ing every actor who liked Parasite with “mneh fneh you made a million on your last movie, you didn’t GET Parasite”, I hate to break it to you, but you didn’t ‘get’ Parasite either.

*okay Ana de Armas wasn’t completely unknown, she’d been in like four movies at that point — Blade Runner 2049 most notably — but tell me you would have recognized the name “Ana de Armas” in mid-2019 on sight.

** there are other contenders for this and it tends to depend on what you like in a movie. Mad Max: Fury Road, The Social Network, Moonlight — I think at that point the “best movie of the decade” comes down to what type of incredibly good movie you like best. I happen to like modern-Hitchcock black-comedy con-capers, so Parasite is my favourite... haven’t seen Mad Max yet though.

*** I went to see this film with my family, but we had to sit in different sections because the theatre was crowded. Apparently as soon as Marta showed up on screen, my mum leaned over to my sister and said “wow, she’s exactly [curriebelle’s] type....she’s gonna have such a crush on her”. She was right.

EPL Matchweek 36 odds, betting trends for top matchups

Manchester City is a heavy road betting favorite facing Burnley this weekend, while Manchester United and Chelsea meet in a pick’em matchup at sportsbooks.

In picking up its 10th straight win on Wednesday with a 2-0 road victory over Manchester United, Manchester City moved back into first place on the table over Liverpool. City will look to hold on to first place and to extend its winning streak to 11 games with a win on Sunday against Burnley.

Manchester City is a -700 road favorite on the Premier League odds at Burnley at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Manchester City went undefeated through its first 15 games with a record of 13-2-0 before hitting a 1-0-3 slump in December. But since then, the club is 14-0-1 over its last 15 matches, putting them three wins away from repeating as Premier League champions.

Coming off its loss in the Manchester Derby, Manchester United will try to bounce back when it hosts Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday. This game is listed as a pick’em as both teams are going off at +165 to win with a draw paying +240.

Manchester United has cooled off considerably over the last two months, going just 2-0-4 over its last six matches since going 10-2-0 in its previous 12 matches. With a goal in the 88th minute against Brighton last weekend, Tottenham Hotspur picked up a 1-0 win to help solidify its hold over third place in the EPL. Crescimento de 3,2% nas vendas mundiais do Grupo Renault em 2018

As vendas do Grupo Renault cresceram 3,2% em 2018, com a integração, desde o dia 1 de janeiro de 2018, das marcas Jinbei e Huasong. Sem estas, as vendas tiveram um recuo de 1,2%, num mercado que, a nível mundial, teve uma quebra de 0,3 %. O Grupo manteve a trajetória do seu plano Drive the Future, com o desenvolvimento das atividades nos mercados fora da Europa, cujas vendas representaram 50,6 % do total (vs 49,2 % em 2017). No mercado de veículos elétricos, as vendas da marca Renault cresceram 36,6% em 2018, com uma especial aceleração no segundo semestre (+62,1%). A Renault liderou o mercado Europeu, com uma quota de mercado de 22,2%. No mercado de Comerciais Ligeiros, as vendas do Grupo progrediram 33,7%, atingindo as 619 229 unidades. Para 2019, a Renault visa um ligeiro crescimento das vendas, nomeadamente no segundo semestre, na sequência do lançamento de novos modelos nos mercados internacionais e à comercialização, na Europa, do Novo Clio, que será revelado no Salão de Genebra.

Em 2018, o Grupo Renault vendeu 3 884 295 automóveis, dos quais, 2 532 567 

(-5,2%) da marca Renault e 700 798 (+7,0%) da marca Dacia. As vendas da Lada aumentaram 18,7% para 398 282 unidades, as da Renault Samsung Motors diminuíram 14,9% para 84 954 unidades e as da Jinbei e Huasong foram de 165 603 unidades.

No mercado de veículos elétricos, as vendas da marca Renault, em todo o mundo, progrediram 36,6%. A Renault foi líder do mercado Europeu, com uma quota de mercado de 22,2%. As vendas do ZOE cresceram 26,1% (39 458 unidades) e as do Kangoo Z.E. aumentaram 5,1% (para 8 747 unidades).

No mercado de Comerciais Ligeiros, os volumes do Grupo cresceram 33,7%, incluindo as vendas da Jinbei e da Huasong. A marca Renault obteve um novo recorde de vendas de comerciais ligeiros, em 2018.

A marca Dacia obteve um novo recorde de vendas na Europa, com 511 622 automóveis vendidos (+10,3 %), a que correspondeu uma nova quota de mercado recorde de 2,9% (+0,3 pontos). Um crescimento sustentado no sucesso comercial do Novo Duster (lançado no início do ano), mas também do modelo Sandero.

O Grupo Renault manteve a trajetória do plano Drive the Future, com o crescimento das vendas nos mercados fora da Europa, que representaram 50,6 % das vendas totais (49,2% em 2017). Although Tarangire is  only a little under three hours  of drive from Arusha, most tourists hurry on towards Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro. Definitely underrated Tanzanian national park that deserves more attention with its beauty. Elephants and baobab trees define Tarangire as a park.

Large herds of elephants are easily spotted around the park. The best time for viewing wildlife is from June to October when wildlife from other parks congregates around Tarangire river. Yet, wet season has its charm too and don’t be afraid to visit Tarangire  in green season when the landscape is lush green.

Except for elephants, Tarangire is home to giraffe, zebra wildebeest, lions, gazelle, eland, heartbeast and very rarely wild dogs.  Tarangire is also great birdwatching site with more than 500 bird species recorded. Not to mention migratory birds, which are present between November and April.

  One Day Safari in Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara is the 7th largest lake in Taznania at the base of Rift Valley Escarpment and could be a soft introduction for a real safari. It is located 120 km from Arusha, about two and a half hours of drive. Although Manyara is known for tree climbing lions, in reality they  are not easily seen!

Leaving this expectation on the side, park is home to elephants, large number of baboons, giraffes, hippos, buffaloes, zebras, dik diks,  flamingoes and impala. You can also go for a walk in  370 m long treetop walkway that was built in 2017. Treetop walkway can be found within a five minute drive from the main gate.

The canopy walk should be booked in advance and costs 30 USD for adult.  Canoeing  2,5 hours on Manyara Lake  is possible for visitors, canoeing safari costs 24 USD.

Prices fro day trip safari to Lake Manyara in 2019 are in range of 420 USD for single person, coples or three people sharing the trip in range 200 to 250 USD and four to six travellers pay around 180 USD on average.

Ngorongoro Crater One Day Safari from Arusha

Definitely the most beautiful place in Northern safari circuit and home to the highest density of big game in Africa. Spotting big 5 in one day is highly possible without too much effort. Best time to visit is all year around,  but June to September, October are considered the best time for general wildlife viewing.

Ngorongoro is worth to see in one day, if you start the day early, leaving Arusha  at 4:30 am. Four hours of drive from Arusha, and 5 hours away from Kilimanjaro airport. One day  Ngorongoro safari prices in 2019 can be found in range of 500 to 700 USD per person (minimum 2 people) and decrease with more additional participants in the car to around 300 USD per person, if safari vehicle is full. Usually 6 people. Safari note: Ngorongoro  gets very crowded and cold in the mornings and evenings. Bring warm jacket with you.

  Serengeti One day Safari from Mwanza

If you are contemplating only one day in Serengeti and you happen to be in Mwanza is possible. One day Serengeti safari departure is required at 4:30  am to 5 am. You will drive approximately two hours and a half to  enter Western gate of the park, known as Ndabaka gate.

To enter the park, passport is required. Usual safari itinerary for  one day in Serengeti includes exploration of Westeren corridor, passing Grumeti river till Seronara area with lunch. At early afternoon hours (3pm) you drive long way back to Mwanza.

Birdwatchers can spot 450 bird species and the best time to enjoy bird watching in Ruaha is between November and April when migratory birds from Europe and Africa are present. Average price for Ruaha one day safari in 2019 costs between 350 to 400 USD per person.

  One day Saadani National Park from Dar es Salaam

One day safaris to Saadani NP usually start in Dar  es Salaam, leaving in early morning hours (cca at 6 am) and coming back to Dar in late evening around 8, 9 pm. Distance from dar is approx.. 300 km.

Saadani Np is the only park in East Africa with an Indian ocean beachfront. Park is small and not very populated with wildlife. Most common animals found in Sadaani are giraffe and hippos. Elephants, buffaloes, zebras and other safari game are  rather rare. 

Birdwatchers can spot 250 bird species. Park is also a stop for migratory birds between November and May. Those looking best weather on Sadaani safari, consider booking a trip in January, February or  from June till end of August.

Quantifying The Eagles’ Playoff Chances

We’re in the middle of narrative central– the calm before the storm which we’ve taken to filling with vapid, anticipatory, no-nothing takes. And I say that not to accuse anybody in the local media – the truth is, no one knows what to expect from the Eagles with Nick Foles as the quarterback – but to simply point out that this is one of the weirdest, hard-to-predict playoff runs in recent history.

Mike Sielski took a stab today at quantifying homefield advantage:

In August, just before the start of this NFL season, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell made a detailed attempt to quantify which teams actually enjoy significant advantages in their home stadia. Beginning with the 1990 season, Barnwell calculated each team’s average point differential for regular-season home and road games. He then added those two figures and divided by two to get each team’s “observed point differential” – that is, the average advantage, in points per game, that a team derived from playing at home.

Why did Barnwell use point differential and not win-loss records? “Point differential,” he wrote, “does a better job of predicting future win-loss record than winning percentage itself.”

What Barnwell found should be sobering to Eagles fans and followers. Over the most recent 10-year period, 2007 through 2016, the Eagles’ observed point differential at home was 2.0 – the 21st-best mark among the league’s 32 teams. And over the entire 30 years that Barnwell examined, the Eagles’ average advantage at Lincoln Financial Field was worth just 1.7 points. Just two teams/homes were worse: the Dallas Cowboys/AT&T Stadium (1.3) and the Redskins/FedEx Field (1.2). Oh, and if you’re thinking that the 700 Level and that infamous artificial turf gave the Eagles a huge edge, think again: Their observed point differential at Veterans Stadium was just 1.9.

This was actually very similar to an article by Jason Mitchell in The Crosswalk two years ago, where he determined that all four of the major Philly sports teams are dead last in homefield advantage. He looked at winning percentages at home and on the road over the last 10 years, and the Eagles were the only team of the four (and in all of sports) to be worse at home.

No matter, as Bob pointed out the other day, the Eagles have been quite good at home under Doug Pederson, and, specifically, defensively under Jim Schwartz, going 13-3 and allowing only 231 points (14.1 per game).

Ironically, the one thing they might have going for them, depending on the cold, is the weather. Even though the offense has looked horrendous the last two games, the Eagles as a whole have gotten a chance to play in the cold for three straight weeks now. Gametime temperature for the Giants game in Week 15 was just above freezing, followed by two very cold games at home to end the season. And if nothing else, bad weather is the ultimate equalizer. So whatever talent gap the Eagles now face by virtue of missing Carson Wentz could, theoretically, be smoothed over by poor conditions. I don’t take the frigid cold weather as a negative, despite how the Eagles have played the last two weeks.

But a better indicator than any conjecture over homefield are the numbers put out by Vegas. Markets tend to have a way of distilling true probability.

That said, there are contradictions even there.

Sports Insights has the Eagles tied for second to win the NFC (+450) with the Rams and Saints. The Vikings are first (+165).

Premier League odds 2019: EPL Matchweek 32 odds, betting trends

Favored Liverpool and underdog Tottenham collide Sunday in a match that could have major implications on the EPL standings.

Liverpool is undefeated at home this season with a record of 13-2-0, outscoring its opponents 44 to nine over those 15 games. The club will look to pick up another big win at home this Sunday when it hosts Tottenham Hotspur.

Premier League odds 2017: EPL betting lines and trends for this weekend’s action

Manchester United and Manchester City both look to remain unbeaten in English Premier League play this weekend as they hit the field as betting favorites at the sportsbooks.
