The Queen's Gambit: The Story

The most powerful piece in chess is the queen.

When this piece joins the game of Duel Monsters anything will change.

With two dragon sisters, a magician and her descendant, the queen will take her rightful place.

As it should have been.

I hate writing duels but I hope you will like it anyway.

Sacred Warrior of Isis is a card of my own creation so don't steal.

Chapter 14: For What We Fight

The first turn in the Tag-Team-Duel between our Royal Couple and the Labrinthy Brother had Green Twin.

"I play this card!", dramatically he summons it. "Labrinth Wall!"

That's a monster card with zero attack points but with 3000 defence points. It will be hard to take down these walls!, thought Afya, already trying to find a strategy to destroy the forming Labrinthy on the Duel Battle Field.

Their watchers were surprised to see the Labyrinth, while Yami also thought what they could do.

Such a battlefield he had never seen!

Green Twin started to talk: "Since my turn is done, I'll explain the rules. Each player begins with 2000 Life Points as usual. But if either teammate loses all their life Points, that team loses."

"Each team alternate turns, as do the players.", took Orange Twin over. "Next, I'll explain how to solve this Labyrinth Field. All monsters played on the field will be similar to chess pieces. If the monster is in attack position, it can move the same number of spaces as its Level during that turn. But if it loses in battle, it can't escape the labyrinth. If you win and exit the labyrinth, you can open one of the two doors."

"It's your choice which door to go for.", told Green Twin.

"Choose the door that you think is correct.", said Orange Twin.

Afya and Yami stared them down in anger.

The twins were playing with them.

Yami, called Afya in their minds. Can you hear me?

Yes, dear. I know what you are thinking and I agree, they will try anything to trick us.

Right, we have to out-trick them.

Fast they discussed what they were going to do before Afya turned regal to the twins: "It seems unfair that you don't give us even a hint, don't you agree?"

Both twins grinned evil and promised that one twin would from now on say the truth, while the other would lie. But who lied and who not they had to find out.

"Better than nothing.", said Afya.

The twins were a bit stupefied about how she didn't try to ask more, no, her orange eyes glimmered dangerously as if they stepped into her trap, but it was absurd.

Right?

Yami had the next turn and played Beaver Warrior in attack position.

Beaver Warrior: (ATK1200/DEF1500)

He lets it advance four spaces into the labyrinth.

The Orange Twin let out an evil laugh and played Shadow Ghoul and Polymerization to fuse it with Labyrinth Wal.

They saw how a shadow raced on the walls of the maze towards Beaver Warrior. Coming out was Shadow Ghoul who destroyed Beaver Warrior.

Yami Life Points drop to 1600.

"Hey, this isn't fair, you can't do that!", shouted Jonochui, waving angry his fist around.

Did these stupid twins trick Yami and Afya?

Orange Twin calmly said it was perfectly legal since Shadow Ghoul had become Wall Shadow and moved onto the Wall, which had no spaces.

"Calm down, Joey.", said Afya to him. "These twins think themselves so high and mighty with their Labrinthy but I will take it down!"

This made the Twins laugh.

"How are you going to do that?", they asked amused.

Afya grinned dangerously, a smile promised danger and pain in their future and they started to sweat.

Why was she so sure of herself?

"I play the Magic-Card De-Fusion and use it on your Wall Shadow!"

"No!", shouted Orange Twin, as Wall Shadow became Shadow Ghoul again.

Shadow Ghoul stood where Beaver Warrior had stood.

Shadow Ghoul: (ATK: 1600/DEF: 1300)

"Then I play Dark Magician Girl in attack position. And make her move up before your Shadow Ghoul."

Dark Magician Girl made an elegant flick-flack to her position and stood ready before Shadow Ghoul.

Dark Magician Girl: (ATK2000/DEF1700)

Shadow Ghoul: (ATK: 1600/DEF: 1300)

"Now my Dark Magician Girl destroy Shadow Ghoul. Dark Burning Attack!"

The female Spellcaster twirled her staff before she sent her enemy to the Graveyard.

Orange Twins' Life Points dropped to 1600.

Angry he gritted his teeth, while Afya and Yami's friend celebrated.

"Wonderful move, my dear.", praised her Yami.

Afya flicked her long dark blue her and winked.

"Child-Play, my darling."

Green Twin swore revenge for his brother and placed a card face down.

He also played Labyrinth Tank in attack position and moved it up seven spaces.

Labyrinth Tank (ATK: 2400/DEF: 2400)

It's Yami's turn and he summons Celtic Guardian and has him move four spaces.

Celtic Guardian (ATK: 1400/DEF: 1200)

Since Wall Shadow was destroyed Orange Twin hadn't any Monster, but he used Monster Reborn to get Shadow Ghoul back.

Shadow Ghoul: (ATK: 1600/DEF: 1300)

Orange Twins doesn't move him, let's him guardine for now the Labrinthy Exit.

Now it was Afya's turn again and she prayed she would get the card that she needed to destroy the Labrinthy.

I believe in you, she heard Yami's voice in her head, Believe in the Heart of the cards, my love.

She nodded and dramatically drew her card, looking at it and she laughed.

"Why are you laughing?", asked Orange Twin.

"What is so funny!", shouted Green Twin.

The queen just smiled wickedly.

"Your little Labrinthy was fun for a while, but I told you will defeat it! I play...Sacred Warrior of Isis!"

A beautiful red-haired woman in an Egyptian top and skirt with two slits and golden jewellery with a silver sceptre appeared on the field.

Sacred Warrior of Isis: (ATK 2900/DEF 3100)

The Twins got a bit nervous, the girl had such a rare and powerful card, but how did she want to destroy the labyrinth?

The next card was the answer.

"I also play Shield and Sword, switching the attack and defence points of all the Monsters for one turn including your stupid Labrithy Wall!"

Labyrinth Wall (ATK: 3000/DEF: 0)

Sacred Warrior of Isis: (ATK 3100/DEF 2900)

Shadow Ghoul: (ATK: 1300/DEF: 1600)

Celtic Guardian (ATK: 1200/DEF: 1400)

Labyrinth Tank (ATK: 2400/DEF: 2400)

Dark Magician Girl: (ATK 1700/DEF200)

"Say bye-bye to your Labyrinth Wall, Sacred Warrior of Isis attack with Judgement of the Goddess!"

Sacred Warrior of Isis swung her sceptre powerfully and with a loud boom the Labyrinth was no more.

Green Twin Life Points were now 1900.

Both twins' mouths clapped open, they...they couldn't believe it, no one had ever taken down their Labrinthy Wall!

What should they do now?!

In the end, they lost spectacularly since all their strategies were relaying on the Labrinthy Wall so it was easy for Afya and Yami to take down their pathetic monsters.

Now only which door was the right remained, but Yami tricked them and they walked out of the underground with all Duelists having 10 Star-Chips.

It was time to go to Pegasus Castle!

"We did it!", celebrate Joey as they were finally outside. "We're back to the surface!"

"Where on the island are we?", wonder Honda.

That's when Bakuras Ring pointed upwards at the same time as Anzu.

"Look."

"We are directly at the steps of the castle, awesome!", grinned Maja.

"Finally, felt like nearly two years to reach this point!", mumbled Sadiye annoyed.

Kihana patted her head in comfort.

"We finally made it here, Yugi, Sehra and Hana!", said Joey, while the other duelists nodded in agreement.

It had been a long and hard way, but they could now enter the finals.

One of them would surely face Pegasus and get not only the prize money but the souls of Yugi Grandpa and Sehrazat's mother back!

Jumping from nerves Sehrazat shouted: "Come on guys, let's don't waste time! Up the stairs."

All groaned.

They had to go up all these stairs again?

Were was an elevator when you needed it.

However, they couldn't do anything so they started to climb them up.

Sadiye was the only one who had it good. Her sister took pity on her and carried her piggyback style.

"Dammit.", groaned Maja, as they were half the stairs up. "I gonna find the guy who invented stairs and make him fall down these stairs, so he will break all his bones and his wife will leave him to be with the guy who invented elevators!"

"Because elevators are much sexier than stairs, we know Maja!", chorused all together.

She had been mumbling this for a while now.

The Magician in training pouts.

So mean.

When they finally reached the last flight of stairs they saw...Seto Kaiba waiting for them before the castle?

"Kaiba?", said Yugi in suprised.

The Schariq sisters looked around, yet they saw no Mokuba.

"Kaiba-San.", called Kihana out to him. "Where is Mokuba-Chan?"

"Yeah where is Mokuba?!", demanded Sadiye to know.

Seto didn't say a thing, he just couldn't.

What had happened was alone his fault!

Because he had not been careful Pegasus did something to Mokuba, making him soulless and keeping him a prisoner.

He couldn't admit it before...Kihana and Sadiye...if he remembers their names right.

Mokuba had talked about them so full of gratefulness, how Kihana had cared for him and Sadiye had become his friend...he felt it would make the sisters angry.

"You won't go any further.", told Seto the whole group.

"What's wrong, Kaiba? What's going on?", asked Yugi.

"Why aren't you answering where Mokuba is?", added Kihana.

She had a bad feeling in her stomach.

Instead, to give them a straight answer he spouted this: "I realized what my destiny is on this island. Yugi, my existence is not favourable for you. When we face each other, the winds of battle swirl forever."

"Kaiba, stop fighting!", begged Anzu.

"I'll face you, Kaiba!", shouted Jonouchi. "I'll crush you!"

The brunette CEO just huffed, like Jonouchi could do this!

Joey was ready to smash his face in but was stopped by Bakura and Honda. Bakura even reminded him how he was no match for Kaiba and Joey defeated looked down.

Sadly his friend was right.

Anzu told Bakura that he had gone too far, while Maja whispered it was still the truth.

So Anzu stared Maja down and she grinned sheepishly at her crush.

That's when Kaibe noted how Jonouchi had 10 Star Chips and mockingly upgraded him from loser to nobody, which in turn made Joey angry again, only Honda and Bakura stopping him.

"It must be a miracle.", mussed Seto stern. "Since that time, I've been searching for an answer. On why I lost my duel against Yugi. How did Yugi achieve a miracle? I think I found the answer. It was something Yugi had and I didn't."

From his shirt, Seto pulled his Duel Monster Card locket with the photo of little Mokuba out. He stared at the picture of his beloved brother and wondered if a person became stronger if they had something worth protecting.

There was only one way to find out...

"Yugi!", Kaiba yelled. "Defeat me if you want to enter the castle! This is the duel of destiny"

All saw the fire in Kaiba's eyes, whatever happened, this time he was serious.

Nearly everyone told Yugi he shouldn't accept this duel. It was nonsense, he had already 10 Star Chips.

However, Kaiba called down how Yugi would understand why they had to duel.

Their Duelist Blood brought them back together.

Dramatically the wind wiped around them and Yugi and Yami switched places.

"Fine, Kaiba! I accept this duel!", said Yami. "And I will defeat you."

Since they were actually doing this, they all followed Kaiba to a place in the castle.

Kaiba stood at one side of a little flat tower and Yami on the other, while the others all somehow managed to squeeze in the little gangway, which led to the little towers.

The wager in this duel was 5 Star Chips.

If Kaiba won he would have 10, if Yami he would have 15 also 5 extra ones.

Gran Gran asked Sehrazat her Yami. Why does pops want to duel Kaiba so much?

Duelist Blood...once it was called Warrior Blood. It's something inside you which doesn't let you back down on a fight. Never.  

Of course, you have it too.

Of course, child of mine if Kaiba-San would have asked to duel me, I would have accepted. It's something about honouring you and your opponent.

Sehrazat didn't quite get it, but maybe you had to be a warrior queen like Afya to understand this.

The duel between Kaiba and Yami was brutal from the beginning till the end.

For the longest time, it seemed Kaiba had the upper hand, crushing Yami's whole deck with the Trap Card Crush Card Virus making every monster in his deck that has 1500 or more ATK useless.

Not only that Kaiba even managed to fusion his three Blue-Eyes White Dragons into the mighty Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon.

It seemed clear who would be the winner but with Kuriboh and Multiply combined Yami had the ultimate defence, saving so his Life Points, till he drew the cards to make a special combo.

Yami uses Polymerization to fuse Mammoth Graveyard to Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon.

Since Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon is a living monster, it cannot properly fuse with the undead Mammoth Graveyard, so it loses ATK equal to the ATK of Mammoth Graveyard during each of Yugi's End Phases.

When the dragon is so down on Life Points Yami summons Celtic Guardine to finish this duel.

That's when all hell breaks loose.

Kaiba steps to the zines of the tower and proclaims he will jump to his death if Yami attacks.

All shout in agast not believing how Kaiba will actually do this because of a card game and only shout louder as Yami declares his attack.

With tears in her eyes, Anzu races to Yami begging him to not do it.

This reaches Yugi, who takes control of his body and commands the Celtic Guardian to stop.

Crying the young boy falls to his knees as Kaiba finishes off with one of the revived heads of the dragon the Celtic Guarding making Yugi lose the duel.

Now all his friends run up to Yugi who shouts how scared he is of this games and Yami.

Only Sehrazat stays clued where she is and grips her Millenium Item.

In the next moment, she is in the corridor where she and Afya Soul Chambers are separated.

The young girl knocks hard on the door of her ancestor.

"Afya!", she shouts. "Why did Yami try to do this?! Is winning so important to you both that you would sacrifice a human life?!"

But the door stays closed.

Sehrazat sniffs and finally realizes there are two more doors in their Soul Chambers.

One is like hers, innocent and pure and the other is like Afya dark and mysterious.

Wait...did it mean the Puzzle and Fragment were now connected?

Well, better for Sehrazat!

She stomped to the other door, Yamis, and knocked hard.

"Hey you two!", she screams. "Give me an answer! I know you are inside!"

Again no one answers her, but Sehrazat hears how Afya and Yami are whispering with each other.

The girl cries out harder and hits the door.

"Cowards! COWARDS!"

Afya's heart bleeds hearing Sehrazat crying behind Yami's door and seeing how Yugi is still crying on his knees too.

She turns to her husband.

"The children are suffering...Was it really the right choice to declare the attack?"

Yami was sitting before her on one of the many stairs in his labyrinth-like Soul Room.

"Afya...I couldn't lose! I needed to get Yugi inside the castle so he could save his grandfather. It was the only way, you know in war there needs to be sacrifices.", he said in a voice full of guilt.

"And yet I hear the guilt in your voice, my love.", pointed Afya out. "This is not war...this was a game getting out of control."

Yami looked up at her.

"What would you have done?"

"I don't know...Sehrazat needs to save her mother. A life for a life is normal in war but like this? Maybe we are cowards for not finding a better way."

Silence fell over them, only Sehrazat and Yugi's cries could be heard.

You were running for your life.

The burning of your lungs didn’t deter you as you continued to run, to where you didn’t know, but you just knew that you couldn’t remain where you were.  Something was coming for you and you had to get away.  You could feel the rapid beating of your heart, the blood pounding in your ears as you ran as fast as your legs could take you; the burning in your muscles not even able to stop you from running.  All of a sudden the world started fading around you, your surroundings going from a muddy gray, slowly getting darker, going back until you were running into nothingness.  The silence was deafening, and being able to only hear the pounding of your heart was unnerving.  You tried to scream into the void, only to hear absolutely nothing.  You realized whatever was chasing you has caught you.

Your eyes snapped open, groaning as you felt a dull ache at the back of your head.  What the hell happened?  The last thing you remembered was opening the door at Sherlock’s flat, thinking Mycroft had come back up.  You tried to move, nearly rolling your eyes at the fact that you were tied to a chair, the zip ties biting into your skin.  You took in your surroundings, just about too dark for you to see anything that could possibly give you any indication as to where you were being held.  It was hauntingly quiet wherever you were and it didn’t seem as though whoever had taken you prisoner was there at the moment. Despite all of this, your mind kept going back to the same person.

Mycroft.

Did they take him too?  Was he alright?  Did he know you were missing?  Did he even care?  Would he be able to find you?

You were snapped out of your internal rambling by approaching footfalls.  They shuffled along, seemingly slovenly as their approach grew louder and louder.  You kept your eyes up defiantly, determined to see the face of the person who abducted you. You saw a shadow figure of an average-sized male approaching you, your heart pounding against your ribcage, but you refused to look away.  His face became clearer in what little light there was where you were being held.  He stood maybe ten feet from you now as you tried to place his face.  He was fairly average looking, not the Quasimodo, menacing man with a handle-bar mustache you were expecting.  You knew you had seen him before…but from where?  

“I see you haven’t figured out who I am yet, Professor.”

His voice is what made it feel as though you were doused with ice water.

That voice.  You had heard that voice every single day at the University when you’d go in early in the morning and as you left every night.  It was a voice that you knew very well, a voice that you had always assumed was nonthreatening.

It was still dark when you parked your car in the faculty parking lot.  Just another typical Monday.  You taught classes all morning, had some office hours in the afternoon, along with a faculty meeting.  If you were lucky, you’d be able to get some of your own research done.  Stepping into the building you quietly made your way to your office to prepare for the day, as well as the long week you knew it was going to be.  Turning a corner, you nearly had a heart attack.  You just avoided slamming into the janitor who was quietly mopping the floor.

“Oh I’m so sorry, I should be more careful!”

The janitor smiled kindly at you.  “It’s no problem at all, Professor.  Be careful, we wouldn’t want you to slip!”

“Oh yes, thank you.  Have a good morning!”

“Good morning to you too, Professor…”

It was all starting to make sense now.  You had been in early every morning and had become accustomed to seeing the same faces again and again.  Just when id that janitor start?  He was fairly new before you left for London…Oh my God.

“I see it’s all starting to make sense now, isn’t it?”

If looks could kill. You continued to stare up at this man, wanting so desperately to pull yourself from the zip ties that bound you to the chair.

“How long…just how long were you watching me?”

He lips upturned into a wicked smirk.  “I wasn’t at the University for awfully long, to be honest.  Just about a month before you headed across the pond.  I really wanted to nab you before your trip, but you proved to be hard to attain…I like that about you, (Y/N).”

You could feel the bile rise up into your throat.  This was a game to this psychopath, and for some unforeseen reason, he decided to zero in on you.  He didn’t even let you say another word.

“You’re just hard-to-get, aren’t you?  At first I was pretty angry that I had to catch a plane…this was supposed to be an easy job.  I couldn’t believe my luck when that geezer wanted to pay me to take you out…but the more I watched you, it became so much more than that.  How that man could ever want to have you killed is beyond me, little bird…”

You wanted to throw up. Great, now the crazy man has a nickname for me…wonderful…that’s always a good sign…

“But I followed you anyway, I had to…I needed to make you realize how much we belong together…how much you were meant for me.  I may have had some minor indiscretions since I’ve been here, but I just had to make you realize how serious I am, little bird.  You are mine.  And you’ll never have to worry ever again…I’ll keep you safe…where nobody and nothing can ever get to you…”

You were fairly certain you were trembling now, partially in fear, but also in anger.  Who did this man think he was?  Well…he probably didn’t know who the hell he was either because he is clearly delusional and insane.  Please, please somebody find me. Mycroft, I hope you’re safe.

Your captor continued to talk at you for a while as you tried to make it look as though you were actively listening so you could try and figure out a way to escape.  It was completely silent, albeit the rambling of the psychopath in front of you.  in the distance you heard a loud thud, which pulled the killer from his perturbed fantasy, his head whipping around to the source of the noise.

In a matter of moments several red laser-like dots were trained on the chest and head of your captor, and you felt as though you could cry. Someone was here, and someone wanted to take him down.  Only roughly ten seconds later you head loud boots running toward you, several pairs if your hearing was correct.  You were surrounded by what looked like to be a SWAT team, shielding you from the cries of your captor.

“Take him alive.  He will atone for what he’s done.”

Although the voice was laced with ice, it was the most beautiful thing you’d heard in the past several hours.  You wanted to whip your head around, run toward him and throw your arms around him, but unfortunately you were still restrained.  You unconsciously tugged at the zip ties, nearly hissing as they bit into your skin once again.

“You have yet to free her?  Do you remember who pays your salary?!”

In that instant you were finally freed and you instantly went to rub at your wrists, certainly bruised by that point.  Careful footsteps walked around you to come to your front, and careful hands lifted you up by your forearms to help you upright.  You could finally breathe again.

“(Y/N)…”

You must have looked a mess.  You were sure you were bruised and dirty and possibly in some state of shock, but you couldn’t help let tears fall as you were face to face with Mycroft, knowing that you were safe when he was around.  He swiftly took his suit jacket off, wrapping it around your shoulders as he began to usher you out of whatever building you were being kept in.  As you approached the exit you could hear your captor screaming for you.  The temptation to turn around and look was there, but you steeled yourself and continued to move with your savior beside you.  Before you were ushered into his towncar you were able to see that you were down by the docks, seemingly being kept in a warehouse.  Typical. You looked up as you saw a helicopter speed off from the scene, as well as at least a dozen police cars creating a light show with their alarm lights.

You looked wryly over at Mycroft, who held a somewhat sheepish expression.

“Don’t you think this is a little much?”

You could feel his hand at the small of your back as he helped you into the car.  As he slid next to you, you could feel the warmth of his arm around your shoulders.

“I nearly called in a tank.  However the Chief of the General Staff informed me that it was ‘overkill.’”

You tried to laugh, but all that came out was a smile, your emotions betraying you.  Mycroft pulled you closer to his form as the car sped off.  You felt sleep overtaking you, the hardships of your ordeal finally hitting you, the adrenaline all but burned off.  As you drifted off into slumber, you could have sworn you heard Mycroft speak softly.

“You are safe now, my darling.”

Nightime photography with Hasselblads!?

Medium format for the Miky Way? Surely, you must be kidding?

First, a warning: this article is somewhat nerdy technical and may not be for everyone....

A few years back, all medium format sensors were based on CCD-technology, as opposed to CMOS. CCD’s are pretty much useless above ISO 200-400. At least for me. Too much noise. But fast-forward to 2019 and all modern MF systems sport CMOS with top of the line Sony-produced sensors. So the sensor shouldn’t be the problem anymore. But what about lenses? No MF lens is very fast, at least no wides. My HCD28 is f4 and my HC35 is f3.5. (This corresponds to 16-17mm and 21-22mm on full-frame respectivly) However, in the mirrorless «small, or cropped, MF market (33x44mm sensors, Hasselblad X and Fuji Gfx) you have the option to adapt faster third party lenses for full frame. Yes, there will be vignetting on wides, and it probably needs a slight crop, but is still very ok.

So this is my experience using both Hasselblad H6D (100mpx 40x53mm sensor) and X1D (50mpx 33x44mm sensor) for starscapes and other night-time photography. This is not a scientific investigation, just my real-world experience.

I started out with my H6D a few years back, and was stoked by the low level of noise at iso 3200 and up. The sensor seems iso invariant, at least above approximately 1600. When photographing stars, you may actually encounter problems with too many of them! On 100% magnification, the sky is filled. At first, I only used the 28mm at f4. The problem was very dark corners that turned somewhat magenta when I used profile correction. This lens is made for a slightly smaller sensor, so it has a lot of vignette used on the large MF sensor wide open. You may end up cropping it, leaving the corners dark, or take all the work correcting the color-cast. However, the HC35mm (21-22mm on FF) is a different story. It’s made for MF film or the larger sensor, and have much brighter corners. Also, it’s f3.5. This is now my go-to lens for astro on the H-system. I most often end up using the HC35mm, wide open, at iso 6400-12,8k. As long as you have a good, bright exposure, noise-levels are very low and easily corrected.

A year back, I got the X1D. Primarily as back-up and for the long hikes. But the smaller sensor and the short flange-distance also makes it tempting to try out with faster full-frame lenses. I have a few nikkors and got myself an adapter. That means electronic shutter and max iso 3200. However, my nikkor 20mmG is f1.8, so that should be ok. And it actually works very well. It needs a crop due to the vignette, down to about 46-47mpx, but then you have no cut-off of the corners and edges. However, at f1.8 it is very dark in the corners. And it has a lot of field-curvature, essentially forcing you to choose to have center or corners sharp. At f2.8 it’s ok all over, at f4 very good, and much less vignetting. I also tried mye good old 14-24 f2.8. That one works as a charm! As long as you crop down to 24x36 format, ca. 40 mpx, below 20mm. Above 20mm you can use the whole sensor-real-estate. Much less field curvature than the 20mm at f2.8, comparable at f4. I also tried the HCD 28mm on the X1D, and here it really shines. The smaller sensor renders the corners much brighter and less magenta. With night photography, you still may want to avoid automatic profile-correction. There is some magenta in there...

So, to conclude this higly unscientific musing about using Hasselblads for starscapes, I now mostly use my H6D with the HC35mm, wide open at iso 6400-12.8k or my X1D with the HCD 28mm with ditto settings. The Hasselblad lenses are just so incredibly good. Zero coma, no field curvature, tack-sharp edge to edge. Just a little vignetting. When I need something wider I use either the Nikkor 20mm at f 2.8 or the 14-24 at same setting. You may think my ISO is high, but the noise levels are so good that I have no problems with that. I actually prefer a brighter exposure, shorter shutterspeed and less star-trails, and the noise-levels are manageable. The modern Hasselblads are at least 1-2 stops better than my old Nikon d800.

Now, I just need to get my hands on that XCD 21mm f4. I suspect it is marvellous!

The Killer Argument Against Salt

Many bloggers known for their contrarian arguments on everything related to nutrition, which they brandish without a shred of evidence, are now claiming that eating a low-salt diet is unhealthy and leads to “increased mortality.”

They also claim that it’s not the quantity of salt that matters, but the quality. For this reason, they recommend particular types of salt like Himalayan salt.

The arguments used to redeem salt are even weaker than those used to endorse saturated fats. But unfortunately, too many people have fallen for them and will die an early death as a result.

What’s even stranger is when those bloggers are otherwise recommending a sort of Paleo Diet or “return to unadulterated foods.” When they claim that “no tribe has ever lived on a vegan diet,” are they aware that those very tribes, which they use as dietary models, didn’t consume salt — a recent addition to humanity’s diet?

Why Salt is a Poison

Dr. Lewis Dahl was one of the first scientists who researched the effects of salt on blood pressure. When he found that a low salt intake lowers blood pressure, his natural question was “does a high salt intake cause increased blood pressure?”

In the 60s, he bred two strains of rats with different sensitivity to salt in developing hypertension. His experiments started building the case against salt.

Opponents will claim that this was insufficient to prove that salt is a major cause of hypertension in humans, and have often trashed Dr. Dahl’s work on that basis. However, they have failed to examine the rest of the evidence against salt. And since 1954,  the science has added up.

Here are the arguments against salt, none of which have ever been considered by salt apologists:

      1) Human beings are adapted to a very low sodium diet, through millions of years of evolution (from pre-human species to modern humans). We ate natural foods that were low in sodium. Breast milk is low in sodium. (Cow’s milk contains much more sodium, by comparison). Because of this, we are genetically programmed to function on a low-sodium diet and eliminate excess sodium in the urine.

      2) When Europeans discovered isolated tribes and communities that did not use salt, they found that they also never experienced hypertension in their lifetime.  On the other hand, modern humans on modern diets have a 60-80% chance of developing hypertension in their lifetime.

           3) There were exceptions to this rule, and a few isolated tribes and communities used salt. For example, scientists studied the Lau tribe in the Solomon Islands between 1966 and 1970. They had the highest blood pressure readings in the region, and also happened to cook all of their fish, sweet potatoes and greens in seawater – so they had a high salt intake.

     4) Scientists discovered that the sodium requirement for humans is only 300-500 mg a day. Most people consume over 4000 mg. a day, sometimes up to 6000 or 8000 mg. 

       5) Chimpanzees are 98% genetically similar to human beings. That noted, scientists tested the salt theory on a group of chimpanzees. Salt intake was progressively increased to 5800 mg a day. Their blood pressure rose by 33/10 mmHg. Even on just 1900 mg. of sodium a day, their systolic blood pressure increased 12 mm. When the scientists removed salt from their diet, their blood pressure slowly came down to their pre-experiment levels.

      6) Human experiments showed the same thing. 

      7) The Rice-Fruit Diet by Dr. William Kemptner was one of the first diets ever used to treat hypertension before drugs were available. It contained 150 mg. of sodium per day. This diet was extremely efficient in treating the most severe case of hypertension — in most but not all people. Later studies found that it was the low-sodium content that gave the results. Blood pressure went up with added salt, but not with added protein. They were able to add 500 mg. of sodium a day without an increase in blood pressure, but not more than that. *10

     8) We know that Thiazide medicines lower blood pressure, probably by increasing sodium excretion.   

What’s Normal Blood Pressure?

Normal blood pressure is not 120/80. That is simply the cutoff at which your doctor will start worrying about high blood pressure. They’ll probably not worry until you hit 140/90, the point at which the benefits of hypertension medications begin to outweigh the risks.

Normal blood pressure is UNDER 110/70. Few people in Western societies achieve such blood pressure over a lifetime because of our diet and high-salt intake.

How Salt Increases Blood Pressure

Humans evolved on a low-sodium diet. Our requirements are very low, under 600 mg — a day. When we start introducing more and more sodium to our diet, our body must work harder to get rid of this extra sodium.

The blood becomes saltier, and the body must dilute this salt. That means more water and more pressure.

Get too much sodium,  and your kidneys will work overtime to do their job.

To suck out all of this sodium and remove it in the urine, kidneys become the best reverse osmosis machine in the world. They’ll draw extra water from your blood. But when there’s extra pressure, it puts a strain on them. High-sodium diets damage the kidneys over time.

Because of all of this extra pressure, the walls of our arteries become thicker. Eventually, small arteries can become so narrow that they clog up completely, or burst entirely because of the pressure. There goes a stroke.

The Salt Skeptics

It would take too long to go through all of the arguments of salt skeptics. But we can point out a few things:

 Some studies have shown that people consuming less salt are living shorter. Explanation: This is due to a problem called “reverse causation.” In Western societies, the only people that tend to cut out sodium are those suffering from major illnesses. Therefore, it is normal to find an association between illness and low-salt intake.

In a few cases, a low-sodium diet can be deadly for people with acute heart failure, taking drugs that flush out their sodium reserves. Explanation: Those are rare cases and can’t extend to the rest of the population.

Many have raised doubts about the famous “Intersalt study,” which initially did not find a significant link between blood pressure and sodium. Explanation: The results were revised in 1996 after the authors had realized they had not corrected the numbers for a “regression dilution problem.” Salt intake was then found to correlate with blood pressure strongly. Many of those studies are flawed and paid for by the salt industry. Dr. Greger has a series of videos on this salt controversy. 

Heavily controlled and rigorous human trials have shown that moderately lowering sodium to 1600 mg. a day significantly reduces blood pressure.

Because some people don’t react to sodium restriction, the average drop can appear small. But remember that every 1 point drop in systolic blood pressure leads to a 1% reduction in overall death.

Remember: the salt and processed food industries need salt to stay alive. They will put out research to try to confuse the public about salt. Meanwhile, the scientific consensus is clear: too much salt is deadly.

How to Tell If Food Has Too much Salt?

If it comes from a restaurant, it has too much salt. If your friend prepared it, it has too much salt. If it’s packaged, it has too much salt. There’s no need to even count mg. of sodium. Eat unprocessed foods that you prepare yourself. If you eat any amount of restaurant food, you’re consuming too much salt.

What About Gourmet Salts?

I can’t end this article without answering a question that will inevitably come up. What about Himalayan salt? Celtic salt? Braggs Liquid Aminos?

The truth is that it doesn’t matter. Yes, some of these salts contain an array of minerals. But most of what’s in it is sodium chloride.

It’s not about salt per se — it’s about sodium. Too much sodium is the problem. And all of those products and more contain a lot of sodium. Because many gourmet salts are moist, one teaspoon of it might contain less sodium. But it still contains mostly sodium — which is a lot.

Braggs, which isn’t as popular nowadays, contains just as much sodium as soy sauce. It looks like it holds less on the label because they play with the serving size.

Even if you used dried celery juice as a powder, you could still get too much sodium if you ate enough of it. The source doesn’t matter. The quantity does.

The Killer Argument Against Salt

Some people may say, “I eat a lot of salt and my blood pressure is fine!”

In reality, salt raises blood pressure in almost EVERY individual, although it may take a lifetime for the problem to become apparent. Only 30% of the population does not have hypertension by age 65. And out of those people, 90% will develop it by the end of their lives. If those individuals lived even longer, they would also get hypertension.

In societies where salt is unknown, the percentage of the population that develops hypertension with age is zero, even when they smoke, drink alcohol or eat meat.

In other words, it’s just a question of time before salt causes hypertension. If you’re lucky, it will just take more time.

However, salt intake affects you in other ways!

Even if you don’t have high blood pressure, salt damages your body in other ways. Salt intake causes kidney damage, stomach cancer, kidney stones, and has recently been linked to autoimmune diseases. But this is only the beginning.

“High sodium intake results in massive albumin excretion, oxidative stress, severe renal arteriolar damage, interstitial fibrosis, increased glomerular hydrostatic pressure, glomerular hyalinization, fibrosis, and end-stage renal disease independently of increased BP.”

The Pledge to Eliminate Salt

All my life I tried to reduce salt, and I concluded that it’s not possible to restrict such an addictive substance. The only method that works is to eliminate it 100%.

We don’t need more sodium than what’s in natural foods! US guidelines for RDA (Required Daily Amounts) states that “the minimum average requirement for adults … [is]… 115 mg of Sodium…per day. In consideration of the wide variation of patterns of physical activity and climate exposure, a safe minimum intake might be set at 500 mg/day.”

Human beings evolved on a low-sodium diet. Therefore our kidneys are adapted to conserve sodium. Salt is NOT paleo! Most humans never had any access to salt up to relatively recently in history.

99.4% of the population consumes more than the 1500 mg. limit of sodium set by the American Heart Association. But the actual ideal intake for optimal health is less than 1000 mg, probably around 500 mg. So the argument that “many people run into health problems by not consuming enough salt” does not hold water!

Remember that optimal blood pressure is under 115/75. Any improvement you can make in your blood pressure numbers will vastly improve your health outcomes!

Even if you consume salt and have an optimal blood pressure of under 115/75, it does not mean that you should keep using salt. 95-99% of people develop essential hypertension if they eat salt, as long as they live long enough. Some people develop it at 35, while others at 85.

One problem with a lot of the research done on sodium restriction is that they focus only on the short-term effect of going from a high-salt intake to moderate salt intake.

According to Dr. James Kenney, Ph. D., author of a fascinating paper or salt toxicity:

Unfortunately, the long-term effects of a low-salt diet have received little attention. After an initial drop in BP, which can be quite noticeable in some individuals, the decline in BP often continues for many months or years, provided the salt restriction is maintained. For example, one group of researchers found that BP was still trending downwards after two years on a diet with about 70 mEq (1600 mg of sodium). Given that the BP raising effects of excessive dietary salt take many years to develop it is surprising that most clinicians expect to see the full impact of a low-salt diet within just a few weeks. In my clinical experience, it may take as long as 5 to 7 years to see the full BP lowering impact of a low-salt diet.

I hope I have convinced some of you to try ditching the salt habit!

I don't know if there are any practices available only to witches, but I'm guessing that a wizard, warlock, druid, or whatever can worship the same deities or cast the same spells as a witch. Witch is a gender neutral term. The term witch isn’t “historically” female - it’s only been a term used to describe magic users as mostly women in modern times (1600s; that’s only 400 years). “Witch” has always been a gender neutral term - only in recent times has it been used more exclusively for women, but that was not ever its only usage. Man, even in Wicca, they call men who practice “witches.” 

Druids are not the same as witches; druidry is closed prior to initiation - people shouldn’t be using that title unless they are a druid or studying to be an actual druid - so that term should not be grouped in with the others.

You know, other people made the gender neutral terms, because shit like this made them scared and uncomfortable to use the term “witch.” They were frightened people would come out of the woodwork and tear them apart because “oh you’re not a woman, you can’t use that word!” Think about that.

There are zero practices available only to witches (if you’re referring to “witches” as still women-exclusive then yeah, definitely no practices closed to anyone due to gender either) - witchcraft is an open practice that anyone can delve into, use as they like, and take away however they want. So, yes, literally anyone can cast spells like a witch, but they can also cast spells as a witch - using that term as their classifier, if they so wish. Because witchcraft is not closed in any aspect to anyone, neither is the label. No one can dictate who can use the term “witch.”

I don’t honestly know why you’re bringing up Salem tbh. Yes, perhaps the majority of the people accused during Salem were female, but that still doesn’t give women the right to place ownership over the term “witch.” It seems like you’re trying to imply something about the fact that women were the ones who “mostly” died for it, so they should have a right to it exclusively? Correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s what I’m getting, and oh man does that not feel right to me.

Witchcraft was never a woman-exclusive space, period, and I don’t think it ever will be, and I think it’s great that anyone can come in and be accepted for who they are and practice magic like a boss however they want. If you want there to be spaces exclusive for women, make one, but it’s not the fault of the practice for not being that way naturally; there actually is a woman-specific space in Wicca, Dianic Wicca. However, exclusive spaces and stuff shouldn’t be something that is thrown over the entirety of the community regardless of how anyone else feels about it.

The term “witch” was never exclusively for women, as I’ve stated like a half a dozen times now - it is associated with almost exclusively women because that’s how it’s been used in modern times, but it has been used for men in the past too. It is gender neutral. If you thought it was a term for women-only, I’m sorry, but it never was; we’re not actually taking anything away from anyone, it was free to use from the get-go. You’re free to make your own spaces, but don’t try to take or claim something that wasn’t actually your “property” to begin with, please, and leave the rest of us struggling to fill it in. Just because we may not have “died” for it, doesn’t mean we have less of a right to it.

You’re also ignoring the fact that there are people who use the term “witch” who don’t fall under the category of either men or women. You declaring it a female-only term or space is not only excluding men. You’re excluding me too, you’re excluding many other people who don’t identify as either, which is why I am standing so hard for this point.

Witchcraft is an open practice. Anyone can use the term witch, and anyone can practice witchcraft. I stand by my point, and the history of the word witch. If you don’t like it, well, I’m sorry, I’m not stopping. I’m standing up for me, for all the male witches, for all the trans witches and the non-binary witches, and the genderfluid witches, like me. We have just as much right to that term as anyone else, because hey! It was never exclusively for women, and witchcraft is a very open practice that anyone can take and use as they like. So I’ll be damned if I stop calling myself a witch, and I will not stand by as other people are bullied for using that term because of their fucking gender.

This is a passionate issue for me, as I’m sure you can see. Trying to collect myself, I’ve made a few changes to what I wrote, but I’m not changing how I think, or some of my phrasing choices. This is important to a lot of us - having an inclusive space and term would be awesome for our community, in my opinion. A lot of people get into witchcraft because they have not many other places to go, to turn to, to draw strength from. Some people draw their self empowerment and confidence from calling themselves a witch - yes, exactly that term witch, not any other term. It gives them the strength to keep fighting and being active in their own lives, to not take life’s shit lying down. We use the word as armor, sword, and shield. It means the world to some of us, because of how it can be seen, regardless of gender. 

It’s a shame you can’t see past the gender part, really. There are some lovely witches out there, men and people who aren’t either, or who are both, and we just want a place to belong and feel welcomed. Trying to exclude us from a term no one actually had any rights to… It doesn’t feel nice. Which is why I will forever stand by my followers and friends, those who identify as ways other than how the term witch has been used, and still call themselves that with pride. (I still stand by those that use other terms for whatever reason, I stand by all magic users, but I hope you can see my point on this one.) I will keep fighting for the word that has no rightful owner, and for the people who want to call themselves it, regardless of its stereotype. 

If that is something you can’t accept, well, what you do next is on you. Because I know where I stand on this, and I’m not going anywhere.

It’s pretty funny to look back on this and see stuff like Puprope^, who I recoded because I’d rather not have her be a Z pull – now, there are no recodes in the Pact of Fate/Truth – or to not be able to pull the rest of the SS mages until recently. Removing recodes from the pool effectively killed my motivation to recode anyone nowadays; the recodes I do have all did a pretty good job at getting me through the story.

I didn’t have a lot of natural non-Pact of Fellowship Zs, but what I did have (Annu, mainly) were pretty useful! Still, I definitely had the feeling that I had better luck with the Companions of Truth at times...

36-4 A desperate and bloody clash over To’toa is unfolding.

The turmoil outside the ship halts you in your tracks. The air rings with angry bellows, screams, the sound of something being crushed flat. A new foe, who comes with another one of those new hazards: twisters (aka damage air)! Unless your unit has Twister Ward and/or Dispell Damage Air, moving over them inflicts physical damage. If your unit is levitating, then they take double damage.

They pre-emptively spawn two twisters in the spaces adjacent to them. On the first turn, they’ll use Negate Circle > Shake Up > move, while summoning two new twisters. Next turn, they use Energy Emission. Shake Up is mainly the more irritating/possibly dangerous move as it can knock units into the twisters or another enemy’s range of attacks.

As mentioned, the damage from twisters is physical; it can make it a bit dangerous or unsafe to pincer the enemy depending on where its twisters are, but on the other hand, this can be mitigated with Olber^’s Physical Capsules. As a reference, without any capsules absorbed, Bonna was taking around 1500-1600 damage when moving over a twister, but ingesting some capsules brought the damage to a significantly more manageable 300-400.

36-5 “At least let us patch you up a little.”

              “I must… get home. If those invisible fiends attack, our land is…”

              “You’ll never make it that far in your condition!”

              Pa’keppar smiles wordlessly, assent clear in his expression.

              A soft glow envelops him. The lizardman glances down in astonishment, finding several of his wounds healed.

              “What’s this?”

              “At least let us patch you up a little. We can’t have you slowing us down, after all.”

 I still maintain that it would’ve been nice to see Pa’keppar. Maybe even have him as an ally for this chapter. Something!

The battles include a mix of enemies. I guess just be aware of Negate Circle?

36-6 “Should you stray from my instructions…”

We’ll be seeing (in a manner of speaking) this mysterious woman. Suffice to say, she’s one unrepentant, sadistic bitch!

The battles have a nice mix of Ciphers to face.

36-7 “Wayfaring strangers, you will go, won’t you?”

           “Correct. An envoy from the black ships in the sky said they’ll leave us in peace if we turn the outsiders over. We will comply with that much.”

              “But they’ve fought alongside us to rescue Lady To’toa! They’re comrades!”

              “Then we must rely on their good offices once more and send them as arranged to ensure our continued security.”

              “Even if they go, we’ve no guarantee the enemy will really withdraw!”

              “If you know of a better way to save this country, do tell! Do you suggest we just keep fighting until one side or the other is wiped out!?”

                Turning, the lizardfolk chief addresses you in a ringing voice. His eyes betray something akin to fear in their depths.

              “Wayfaring strangers, you will go, won’t you? How you are connected to the black ships in the sky, I know not. But you’ve fought to save To’toa, and you’ve saved our countryman Pa’keppar. As a token of our esteem for your services, we will not drag you there by force. We ask instead that you go of your own volition, on your own two feet.”

                Your party sets off for the designated place.

It’s not really fair, of course – but the poor chief’s stuck between a rock and a hard place. Of course, our party isn’t malevolent. They wouldn’t doom a nation to save their own hides.

Seeing Alika there instead of Rikken as a bow user may raise some questions. The reason she’s there is solely for the chance of getting skill boosts.

36-8 Malevolence has alighted here.

So, technically a player could’ve seen Mutoh before – after chapter 34 is cleared, you’ll see one of two Animatas in the spacious overworld, one of which is hers – and you can battle/recruit her. 

Gameplay/story segregation aside, maybe it would’ve been better to introduce her and her partner after this chapter was done…?

3 battles here. The boss spawns, goes !!, and bumrushes the party to escape the field. Rude.

On the second floor, it spawns on the left side, does the same thing by rushing to the right.

It can be properly fought on the third floor, though it’s accompanied by quite a few twisters.

Its attack pattern is quite simple, and it never actually calls reinforcements: Thrust away + breath attack + move > repeat.

When at low HP, it’ll use its moves but also cast Buff Up repeatedly, which boosts its physical attack by 1.5x for 99 turns.

From the windows, one can see light flashing over the outskirts of the city. Rumbling thunder follows, rolling across a landscape that seems frozen in place.

This stage has 5 battles in it, and the first four are against the Ciphers.

And here’s the boss, who starts off right away by summoning twisters in the vertical pincer squares.

Its skillset pattern, as far as I was able to see:

1.      Thrust away, 2 outer columns > moves > spawn vertical twisters

2.      Shake up, All (doesn’t move)

3.      Thrust away, All > summon reinforcements (1 of each Cipher) > spawn horizontal twisters

4.      Thrust away, 2 outer columns

5.      Shake Up, All

It starts glowing at low HP, but hell if I know what it does. Beyond that, it wasn’t all that big a trouble, in all honesty.

Everyone is giddy at the prospect of impending victory. It lightens the swords they brandish and enhances the magic they wield. They fight nimbly, agilely, as though they've sprouted wings. Little do they know that this battle is but a prelude.

There are hundreds of them, thousands... No, perhaps even more than that. Monstrous fiends are appearing, their ranks growing every minute. Still, you must fight. The riftworlders, those demons from another dimension, will surely and utterly destroy this planet if left to their own devices. So fight you must. The fate of the lizardfolk home world depends on it.

Looks like the conflict is ramping up - and the crew has a name and face to one of the mysterious riftworlders...
