After a year of success in their Road Wife initiative, the vacancy needed to be filled and you are their candidate. Word Count: 1,700

Thirty-seven days. That was all it had taken for you to think: This is it, I’m fired.

It was only so few days ago you had started your internship with the Tampa Bay Lightning’s social media team. While the job wasn’t all that hard - you spent your days at the rink or glued to a computer screen - navigating the office politics, assuring your tasks were done to the best of your ability and maintaining your professionalism with both operations and players had been enough to make your head spin. But if you were one thing, you were a fast learner, and your boss was impressed by your poise and work ethic. It, however, was the wives that had you worried.

You had been documenting the first day of training camp when you noticed them staring. Each one of them with their blown out hair, thick lashes and sun-kissed skin, watching you from the stands that looked over the practice rink. You could feel their eyes burning into your back, and their whispers had been enough to leave your stomach in knots. You had been nothing but pleasant with them, but you were always left under the impression that they didn’t like you.

It couldn’t have felt more true as your boss had approached your desk, his face in a knot, calling you back to a conference room where a number of the wives sat around the table. You couldn’t remember all of their names, but you knew their faces. They were the wives of franchise players, and if they wanted you gone, there was no doubt in your mind that they could make it happen.

Your hands near trembled as you came to sit across from them, and only could you find your composure as you knitted your fingers firmly together on your lap. You sat in front of them, your lips pressed firm together as if you were to relax them you may cry. You waited for your boss to take the final empty chair, but instead, he closed the door and left you alone with the player’s wives.

Your stomach was up in your throat, the threat of vomiting becoming nearer and nearer as you sat in silence. It hung heavily in the air for minutes, the clock in the wall marking each second with a quiet tick as the time passed, but it was only when on of the wives got up from her seat to assure the lock in the door was engaged that they began by sliding you a single slip of paper.

A non disclosure agreement.

You swallowed hard.

“Before we continue, we ask that you please review and sign this document,” one of the wives instructed carefully.

The document was vague, and failed to disclose any hints of information that the wives could speak to once you had signed the paper. What it did make clear however, was that if you spoke a word to anyone, the tabloids, or even other staff in the building that you would be terminated from your position without pay and that legal action may be taken out against you.

You palms began to sweat and you dried them against your dress pants carefully before taking ahold of your pen. For a moment you thought of standing up from your seat and leaving without any knowledge of what information the wives had to offer you - but your curiosity was growing all too quickly.

Just what was so important to earn such secrecy?

Biting your lip, the tip of the pen dragged along the dotted line and you left your signature behind.

“Perfect,” one of the wives smiled and tucked the paper away into a folder that rested in front of her, “I would like to start by apologizing for pulling you away from your work. With the first game of the regular season rapidly approaching, we know it can wet quite busy, but it is the very reason we have asked you to meet with us today.”

All you could do was nod, the urge to vomit still too strong and your curiosity unbearable.

“Last season, we had begun a pilot project of sorts with the woman that was previously in your position-”

You hadn’t known much about her, but you knew she had left in good terms and those in the office seemed to miss her dearly. Her shoes has been hard to fill, and now, it was beginning to seem even more impossible.

“-she had agreed to take on extra duties that had not been included in her original job description. Including working not just home games, but travelling with the team on every road trip throughout the regular and post season. It was not without further compensation of course. Do you think that would be something you may be interested in?”

You were chewing the inside of your cheek now, your leg shaking nervously under the table. You hadn’t expected to travel, but it would bring greater experience and the promise of further compensation was hard to ignore. Your internship was paid. Though, it wasn’t all that much, and you still had your student loans to pay off. But you wouldn’t commit yourself yet, not without knowing exactly what you were agreeing to.

“The duties that would be expected of me, what exactly do they entail?”

The two wives took a long glance at one another, as if they too were just as nervous as you. Then the silence broke, “You would perform your usual duties working alongside the media team, as well as the duties of the Road Wife.”

They had spiked the words so casually, you had almost accepted them as normal - but the final two words had left your ears red hot.

What the hell was a Road Wife?

And as if they could read your mind, another sheet of paper was placed in front of you. “You will travel with the team on their every road trip and perform wifely duties at the request of the players. You will assist them with their packing, with their meals and their coffees as needed. You will aid in their travel and the release of stress by their requested means within the guidelines of the contract if you so choose to sign it.”

You quirked a brow up, at their words, your handing taking hold of the paper to take a close look at the duties outline on the sheet presented to you. You held your breath as you hung off every word. At first it had seemed simple, like caring for a bunch of overgrown children at summer camp, but with each passing line it was becoming all to clear as to why you had signed the confidentiality agreement.

The Road Wife will keep a organized calendar that is accessible by both payers and wives to schedule needed appointments.

Appointments may include and are not limited to general house keeping, private dinner dates, body maintenance and sexual favors as outlined in each players provided folder of limitations.
