TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. It refers to the practice of teaching English to non-native speakers in countries where English is not the primary language. TEFL can also refer to the certification process that qualifies individuals to teach English abroad or in non-English-speaking regions.
Key Points About TEFL:
Purpose: The main goal of TEFL is to help learners develop their English language skills, which may include speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The learners are typically non-native English speakers who need or want to learn English for academic, professional, or personal reasons.
TEFL Certification:
A TEFL certification is often required to teach English in many foreign countries. It involves completing a course that covers teaching methods, lesson planning, classroom management, and language skills.
TEFL courses can vary in length and depth, typically ranging from 120 to 150 hours of instruction. Some programs also include practical teaching experience.
Certification can be obtained online or in person, and it’s recognized globally by employers in the education sector.
Difference from TESOL and CELTA:
TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is similar to TEFL but is often broader, covering teaching English both abroad and in English-speaking countries.
CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is another specific type of TEFL certification offered by Cambridge University, and it's often considered more prestigious or rigorous.
Job Opportunities:
With a TEFL certification, you can find job opportunities in schools, language institutes, or private tutoring across the world, especially in countries like China, South Korea, Japan, Spain, and Thailand, where there is a high demand for English teachers.
Some TEFL jobs offer benefits like housing, airfare, and competitive salaries, making it an attractive option for those who want to travel and work abroad.
TEFL Course Content:
Courses typically cover key areas such as English grammar, language acquisition theories, lesson planning, classroom management, and teaching techniques for different age groups and proficiency levels.
Many courses also provide insights into cultural sensitivity and adapting teaching methods to different cultural contexts.
Who is it For?
TEFL is ideal for native or near-native English speakers who want to teach abroad, recent graduates seeking international experience, or individuals looking to change careers.
It’s also suitable for those who wish to teach English online to non-native speakers.
TEFL certification can open doors to a rewarding teaching career worldwide, providing opportunities to explore new cultures while helping others learn a valuable global language.

What Support did the WTEFLAC Provide?
By providing advice, information and tips the WTEFLAC helped people to find the right course for them and also improve their own teaching skills.
The World TEFL Accrediting Commission was set up to raise standards of education in the TEFL and TESOL sectors. Their main activities were an accreditation through which companies could achieve verification of their courses and the expertise of their teams. However, another plank in that goal was education.
Every year thousands of people set out to become TEFL teachers. They have a massive market of opportunity with tens of thousands of English teaching places becoming available every year. However, one thing these people lack is access to quality and reliable information.
Exploring TEFL providers
A glance at the internet reveals a huge number of online providers offering courses and information. The question for anyone new to this scene would be – how much of this could be trusted. The wild west of online marketing means it can be impossible to verify much about what companies claim, or whether information is reliable.
The WTEFLAC sought to create not only an organization that would provide accreditation and guidance for these companies but also produce an online hub where people could go for information about the TEFL sector in general and advice on how to pursue their career as teachers and improve their own skills.
It would include information about the different types of courses available – such as the contrast between TEFL courses, which provide internationally recognized qualifications and TESOL courses designed to teach English to speakers of other languages. These provide skills and guidance designed to help people deliver education and communicate with people when there is no common language in place.
Building a career
Going for a career teaching English as a foreign language is about much more than just the qualifications on offer. It’s about understanding what countries you want to teach in, whether you want to teach a specific age group or whether you want to work in a school or deliver online courses.
The courses themselves can differ substantially in the way in which they are delivered and the prices. Some offer comprehensive education with a certain amount of in person education. Others allow people to complete courses online in their own time. Generally speaking these might include between 120 and 150 hours of actual teaching time, together with clear and sequential structures for each course’s outline.
Other providers also offer opportunities for further career progression. Let’s TEFL, for example, which was accredited by the WTEFLAC not only offered a single comprehensive TEFL course designed to offer everything people would need, but it also provided opportunities for further work placements. Not only did people get a comprehensive education, therefore, but they were also given clear support in taking their careers forward.
Choosing your next steps beyond the course, therefore, can be crucial. For that it is important to understand the sector and build your own skills as a teacher. Through its blog and online guides, it provided people with a comprehensive set of tools with which to achieve their goals.

"Five stars!"
“Five stars!”
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 5 out of 5. CIEE TEFL review, submitted by Sarah. I completed the 150-hour course online with 20 practicum training hours (also online) in November 2021. As a native speaker, I still found some sections difficult; notably the grammar sections. I’m convinced this is because no one really taught me grammar when I was a kid at school. I can’t understand why they don’t teach grammar…

Heyyyy!! I just left Shanghai, moved to Lisbon, but I really am missing Shanghai. It's not a possibility to go back for me, sadly, but how is living in Taiwan? I'm guessing in terms of salary, cost of living, expat community, opportunity to do cool things/hobbies, and travel in and out of Taiwan.
I hope you don't mind if I answer this publicly and in great detail, finally my hour has come, someone wants my extended opinion on this subject! (As opposed to me going on about how I want to stay in Taiwan forever to my slightly baffled Asian classmates, or Taiwanese people dying to move to Europe). I will go down the list (if you want more info on anything let me know):
Salary: if I remember correctly you have a master's in education or TESOL(?) so if you got a job at one of the international schools in Taipei I think you'd be making very good money compared to the local salary. I've actually never worked for money in Taiwan, but as far as I know from friends/job ads, 補習班/cram school salaries start at 600NT/hr for entry level, around 800NT+ with experience, privates may be around 1000+? I am not sure at all about public schools, I've never met anyone working at one. English copy editors seem to do okay. Employers generally don't provide housing or flights like Korea or China.
Cost of living definitely depends on how you live, I had one classmate who was a doctor from Hong Kong renting an apartment in 大安區 near school for 40,000NT/month (outrageous), I live in a tiny 分組套房 in 士林區 for less than a quarter of that. It's gonna be hard to find a completely private living space (not a shared flat) for less than 10,000NT in Taipei, and it's very hard to find a studio with a kitchen. Outside of Taipei costs go down dramatically, I've heard tell you can rent a whole apartment with multiple rooms for 6000NT down south. People complain about inflation but the cost of living is really not bad compared to the US or Australia, if you eat local it can start at 50NT for the cheapest 便當/自助餐 (some people think 50NT 便當 is sketchy tho and a good one starts at 100), you can get "Italian" pasta for 140NT and up. A breakfast sandwich/蛋餅 and milk tea usually runs me 75-95 NT. A Taiwan Beer at 7-11 is around 35NT, drinks at bars are comparatively expensive though, mixed drink is probably minimum 150, if it's a fancy place 300. (I'll be honest I very rarely go to bars though, just too loud). Public transport is very good, a monthly metro pass in Taipei is 1280NT, gives you a discount on the city wide bike share too. Museums are surprisingly cheap, I don't think I've ever paid more than 80NT for a ticket (not counting National Palace Museum). I would say it's a very reasonable cost of living for what you can make as an English teacher.
Expat community, I'm not sure what your optimal situation is, in the short term, there are a lot of international students, and long term, white guys with Asian partners (of all genders) here for life. My one friend who teaches falls into the latter, my social life is kind of split between him and his friends & their better halves, other Mandarin students, and local queer people/language exchange friends. I find Taiwanese people on the whole to be quite friendly, I don't think it's an issue to socialize, especially if you already speak some Chinese (not to mention a lot of people speak decent English, and sometimes take it upon themselves to come up and try to help you if you stand around looking confused for long enough, or if they think you can't read a menu).
Cool things/hobbies/traveling: I'm a little biased because I love Chinese so I'm easily amused just reading the signs on the metro buuut… There's a lot of accessible hiking, bike trails, beaches, festivals, temples, night markets, museums, art spaces + classes, neat cafes, music venues…I have a list of things I intend to do and I never get through it. Definitely moreso in Taipei than elsewhere though. You can do anything with a scooter but traveling is very easy with just public transport, train and bus connections are great, you can use the Easycard on pretty much everything, people will happily pick up hitchhikers too. There are several small islands you can visit by ferry or plane, international connections are/were great (at least pre-pandemic there were cheap flights to all surrounding areas, I got a $28USD one-way ticket from Taoyuan to Cebu once).
In general, living in Taiwan is very convenient. I have never had such a smooth time at an immigration office. You can do a myriad of things at 7-11, get mail, pay bills, print and copy, buy train tickets, whatever else that Ibon machine does, etc. There is not even a fraction of the hassle of China and the 沒辦法 attitude over there. Of course white/western privilege does come into play, it's not a utopia for everyone, to my knowledge wages are kinda stagnant for locals, and some people move on from dead-end teaching jobs to opening a business (bar or something food related seems popular) once they get permanent residency.
The main downside is probably the weather. I have fond memories of a beautiful September day in Shanghai that I cannot picture ever manifesting in the subtropics. It's really unpleasantly hot in the summer, and in Taipei in the winter it's damp and cold but there's no indoor heating so everyone is bundled up in coats indoors while it rains and rains and you forget what the sun looked like and the laundry never dries (there are laundromats with dryers for the desperate times at least) and…I'll stop there. It even snows in the mountains sometimes! If you have a real grudge against earthquakes, cockroaches, rain, or scooters on sidewalks, I'd think twice. Otherwise Taiwan is definitely my favourite place I've lived in Asia so far, but keep in mind though that a) I'm obsessed with Mandarin and 繁體字 and b) I've only ever lived here as a student (and done workstay in a hostel), never had a proper job. I hope this helped! 過來吧!

The realities of TEFL
The realities of TEFL Diary submitted by Buki D. Madrid #tefl #tefltrainer #teflcourses #teflprograms #tesol #teflinternships #teflspain TEFL Trainer: Expectations vs Realities This study is going to discuss the expectations and realties of TEFL, along with the advantages that teachers can gain from undertaking a TEFL course. The acronym TEFL stands for ‘Teaching English as a Foreign Language’ (the TEFL Trainer) course gives university students and graduates an opportunity to teach English in a foreign country to people of all ages. Overall my TEFL course in Madrid has been a very rewarding and exciting experience for me through my interactions with my students and the staff at the English Academy I have been able to learn about the different cultural norms and traditions of Spain. Moreover, the TEFL course has been pivotal to my growth and development as a teacher because I have learned to employ different methods and techniques in order to increase the effectiveness of my teaching. However, the beginning of my TEFL course was quite overwhelming, I had no prior experience to teaching and I struggled immensely but over time through practice and feedback from my peers I have been able to improve my teaching through various means. One of the greatest lessons that I learned from my internship is to be flexible, as an EFL teachers you must be able to adapt your lessons and tailor them to the needs of your student. Expectation Vs Reality Given the fact that I had no prior teaching experience, I did not know what to expect from the TEFL course. I had so many queries about lessons plans, how I was going to teach my students and what kind of teaching material I was required to use. However, much to my surprise and pleasure the structure of my lessons has been fairly straightforward. The teacher’s handle book has been very helpful because it contains guidelines and vital information about grammar and vocabulary and in times of confusions the booklet has also acted as a guide for my students and me. Another advantage is the layout of my TEFL course for instance, the 150 hours of practical work encourages growth and progression, because the more teaching that you do the better you become. Thus demonstrating and proving the concept that practice does indeed make perfect. Furthermore, the six reflective diaries have helped me to reflect on my experience as an EFL teacher. The reflective diaries gave me opportunity to explore the different alternatives methods that I could have used to teach. The reflective diaries may seem quite daunting at first because of the amount of research you may have to undertake. However, these diaries gave me an insight into different teaching techniques and language theories which could be applied my teaching. The TEFL course also made me aware of the difficulties and challenges that non-speakers of English struggle with. I learned that communicating with students in their L1 language can have a positive impact on their learning although this is a rather contentious issue in the world of teaching. In my experience as an EFL teacher translating certain words and phrases in Spanish increased my student’s understanding which enabled further engagement and interaction. Lastly, the bi weekly Spanish lessons made the assimilation process easier and improved my communicative abilities according to the likes of Abidin, Pour-Mohammadi, & Alzwari, Abidin, M “knowing language can help us to express our opinions, hopes, and even our dreams” (J. Z., Pour-Mohammadi, M. / & Alzwari, H. (2012).This is another vital lesson that I took away from my TEFL experience. Teaching English has made aware that language acquisition goes far beyond learning grammar lexis and syntax. Learning English for many of my students was opportunity for them to communicate and express themselves. In conclusion, the TEFL trainer course has developed my skills as a teacher; I have become more confident in my ability to teach which has increased the effectiveness and quality of my lessons. In retrospective I could have improved my TEFL experience by researching different styles and methods of teaching. This is one of the great advantages that the TEFL course has to offer because through the process of trial and error I have learnt the importance of being concise and terse. Long explanations and examples can confusion and misunderstanding which is an issue that I often struggled with. In addition, another surprising aspect of the TEFL course is that it strengths your emotional intelligence as an EFL teacher you learn to have empathy and compassion for your students. Preocupada
Besides adapting to new environments one of the things at which I excel is worrying. I’m not proud of this skillful anxiety, in which I pick apart every possible difficulty like a bag of dirty laundry until finally I’m sunk into inaction by the sheer terror of every possibility. One wouldn’t know it, seeing me sitting quietly in the main hall of the hostel, that inside my heart and stomach were competing for the title of best knot-maker. The hostel I’d booked for the first week charged me three times what I’d been quoted on the reservation site, my tax refund wasn’t coming in until after the 15th, I’d had to buy a return flight at the airport to prove to Jetblue I wasn’t skipping the country, I had to pay to have my TESOL certificate sent to me, and all the while I still had to wait for an official offer for the position to which I’d applied. A professional nail-biter turned skin-picker it was all too clear to me that this wasn’t something I’d be able to shake. I hadn’t quite gotten over the fluttering disquiet when I took the car to my next temporary residence. In Colombia, you sit in the front seat, or else the local taxi drivers catch wise to the driver’s job and mark it for later vandalism, usually setting the car on fire. This can make things awkward but on this ride, it forced me to practice my Spanish. We talked for a while about Trump and my job history and how easy it was to learn Spanish after a few months – something I prayed to be true. Eventually we came to the house where I was staying, my host introduced me to the family with whom I’d be living, and promptly left. After taking a shower and a brief nap I took a walk to get something to eat, eventually settling on groceries to save my dwindling account from the threat of daily restaurant-dining. Alborado is a much quieter part of Bogotá. Rather than cater to the hordes of tourists in the Candelaria district, the houses are bordered by fences and roses. The streets are dotted with hibiscus trees and most of the dogs are on the threshold instead of the sidewalk. Even though the neighborhood is much further away from the mountain a cool breeze blows through the streets at a consistent pace. I crossed the one busy street to the éxito market, Colombia’s answer to Wal-Mart, and made my way home after parting with even more of my precious money. Back at the house I started cooking right away while the family’s English speaking son, Andres, watched and talked to me about my family and my career. He is a marketing student and is currently learning English to break into the global market. His brother, Carlos, is a graphic designer whose bedroom walls were plastered with Chinese-style tattoo designs he’d illustrated by hand. His own arms are covered with tattoos, and when he showed them to me his mother Luz-Maria grimaced and shook her head. Luz-Maria is an excellent cook, making sauces entirely from scratch and some of the best beans I’ve ever eaten in my life - there was really no need for me to go out and buy groceries since she fed me every day. Over lunch I spoke to her and her husband about the possible contract I had coming up, 2 million pesos and a housing stipend but a Monday-Saturday schedule of 6am to 9pm days. Augustín, the patriarch with a tailor-shop on the first floor, balked at the 150-hour work week, saying the average Colombian workweek was about a third that much. My Spanish comprehension skills were steadily improving but that wasn’t saving me from my constant restlessness. Even if I got this job, did I want to work fifteen hours a day for about four dollars an hour? If I didn’t accept the job how long would I have to wait for a possible position through this agency? If I didn’t accept the job would the agency even bother re-placing me after all the complications I’d already presented? Was this just going to turn into one big fat pointless vacation?
I didn’t have an answer yet. I still didn’t know how to feel about all the possibilities springing up around me. Somehow I had to find a way to make “potential crisis” sound more like “opportunity.”

ITTT TEFL Review: A Guide To The Courses
Wouldn’t it be great if you could travel the world while doing exciting, meaningful work? As a TEFL teacher, you can! Getting TEFL certified can open up opportunities to teach English across the globe.
This post will cover everything you need to know about getting TEFL certified with the International TEFL and TESOL Training Program, also known as ITTT.
Why Should You Get TEFL Certified?
Having a TEFL certification can help you qualify for all kinds of teaching jobs. Whether you plan to work from home as an online English teacher or teach abroad in cool places around the world, a TEFL certification can make that happen.
Your TEFL training will prepare you to teach English as a foreign language.
You’ll learn practical skills like classroom management, lesson planning, and teaching technique. After you complete your training, you’ll have a certification that employers look for when they’re hiring teachers.
While other requirements tend to vary based on country and company, the vast majority of English teaching positions abroad require some kind of TEFL certification.
With so many good TEFL programs out there to choose from, it can be hard to figure out which one is best for you.
That’s why I’ve been writing posts about some of the most popular programs around. You can check out other top online TEFL programs in this post, but today we will take a closer look at the TEFL options provided by ITTT.
Why Choose ITTT International?
ITTT has offered TEFL training since the early 1990s and is fully accredited.
Their online TEFL Courses are accredited by the Online TESOL and TEFL Standards Agency (OTTSA). The Teacher Training Council accredits their combination courses, and their in-person courses are backed by Lamar University and the Siam Institute of Technology.
ITTT stands out because it offers so many different course options.
You can choose from 60-hour beginner courses all the way up to 550-hour comprehensive bundles. All TEFL programs with ITTT come with an optional virtual tutor add-on for people who want extra support.
The result is that you can go as in-depth or minimalist as you want with ITTT. And because they offer so many options, there is also a good chance you’ll find a course that suits your budget.

Cons of ITTT
I mentioned this above as a pro but it can also be a con: ITTT offers a ton of different course options.
If you’re feeling unsure of where to start, the number of options available is totally overwhelming. Luckily, you can easily reach out to an ITTT staff member through their website to discuss your specific situation.
Another con that was mentioned occasionally in student reviews was that some of the online-only classes lack practical teaching elements.
Some students felt that there weren’t enough opportunities to get feedback on lesson plans and that the quizzes were too easy to pass.
Finally, while it is advertised that ITTT includes job placement assistance, several students mentioned that this assistance was minimal, rather than extensive.
Can Anyone Take This Course?
The ITTT International TEFL course is open to anyone who is fluent in English and at least 18 years of age.
You’re not required to have a degree or any experience teaching, but these qualifications could give you more job options in the future.
That being said, there are still options for teaching English online and abroad for those without a Bachelor’s Degree or prior teaching experience.
Having an accredited TEFL certification will make your application more appealing to potential employers.
How To Sign Up
Signing up is easy and doesn’t require any commitments.
Go to the ITTT website and click on “Apply Now” in the top menu bar. Scroll down the page until you see the form to input your personal information.
You’ll fill out the form then push the “Apply” button. Someone from ITTT will be with your shortly to help you decide which course is best for you.
click here to learn more and to apply with ittt
Is ITTT International The Right Fit For Me?
ITTT is a great fit for students who want lots of options to choose from.
If you think you’ll benefit from having the support of a virtual tutor, you can add that feature to your course. If you’d rather save a bit of money, you can choose not to have tutor support.
You can also choose the level of instruction that you wish to receive.
For some students, the basic 120-hour course will be plenty. Others may wish to take their TEFL training a step further by enrolling in 50-hour specialty courses or the more advanced TEFL diploma.
The choice is yours and the options feel endless.
ITTT is also a great option for students who want to get TEFL certified abroad. With dozens of locations to choose from and reasonable course fees, getting your certification might become part of the adventure!
If you want flexibility and plenty of options when getting TEFL certified, ITTT is a great platform to consider. Click here to learn more about this reputable TEFL company.

6 Best TEFL Courses for Teaching English Overseas
Posted: 4/18/20 | April 18th, 2020
One of the best ways to make money overseas is to teach English. Dozens of countries all around the world are always on the hunt for qualified English teachers, providing a steady income for travelers looking to pad their bank account in between trips.
Of course, teaching English abroad is also a valuable, enriching job in and of itself. Not only do you get to enjoy expat life in a far-flung destination but you get to help a community and the people who live in it while gaining valuable work and life experience. It’s a win-win!
In order to find a teaching position abroad, you’ll need to take a TEFL course first. TEFL stands for “Teaching English as a Foreign Language.” It’s a certificate program that teaches you how to teach English as a foreign language. (While you can find jobs without a TEFL certificate, they will be few and far between.)
TEFL programs are offered online and in-person all around the world; prices vary depending on where you enroll. Just like there are thousands of universities that offer bachelor’s degrees, there are thousands of companies that offer a certificate called “TEFL.”
Since there can be a lot of competition for teaching positions, you’ll want to make sure you enroll in a reputable program that will teach you the skills you need — not only to find a job but to succeed at it.
To help you get started, I’ve made a list of the top six TEFL programs. Having taught overseas in both Thailand and Taiwan (and having studied to be a history teacher myself), I can tell you not all programs are created equal!
1. i-to-i
When it comes to online TEFL courses, i-to-i is one of the best. It’s a basic online TEFL course that gives you 120 hours of study and costs $139 USD, making it one of the most affordable on the market. If you’re not 100% sure teaching overseas is for you, this course would be the best for testing the waters.
i-to-i also offers a 180-hour course with additional content on teaching young students and teaching grammar (because let’s face it, most of us native speakers are terrible at grammar). It also has 300-hour courses, TESOL-equivalent courses, and more. (See below for more about TESOL.)
If you’re new to teaching and want to see if it’s for you, this is the company I’d suggest you start with — especially if you’re on a budget. That said, since it’s all online, you’ll need to make sure you have the self-discipline to put in the work.
2. TEFLPros
TEFLPros offers an online 120-hour course that includes 17 hours of in-class observation videos. Its platform is incredibly user friendly and includes quizzes, worksheets, assignments, and tips on lesson planning. It’s $349 USD.
This course has more video content than most others, so if you prefer learning that way, this is a good choice for you. Best of all, they offer a free trial of the course, so you can check it out before you commit.
3. myTEFL
This is another affordable (but reputable) TEFL program. myTEFL offers a standard 120-hour program for $299 USD. In addition to all the online lessons and assignments, myTEFL will also provide you with a letter of recommendation upon completion, as well as assist you with finding a job.
You’ll have three months to complete your course; however, you’ll also get an additional three months of access to the content so that you can use it as a resource once you start teaching. Super helpful when you’re still finding your legs as a teacher!
For 35% off the price of your course, use the code “matt35” at check out!
4. International TEFL Academy
If you’re looking for a TEFL course that features in-classroom training, the International TEFL Academy is probably the best on the market. This is the most thorough and interactive course that you can get without physically being in a classroom for four weeks.
The 170-hour online course is a fully interactive, collegiate-level course taught by a university-level professor. It comes with 150 hours of coursework and 20 hours of student teaching. The course takes about 11 weeks, and you can expect to spend 10-12 hours a week on your coursework. The course is $1,399 USD.
While it is interactive, it’s not taught in real-time, so you can log in at any time to take your classes and do your coursework. Just make sure you meet your weekly assignment deadlines!
5. Vantage
This 120-hour TEFL course is based in Thailand, making it a convenient option if you’re already traveling in Southeast Asia and are considering teaching English.
Vantage focuses on preparing you to teach in Thailand, though it also has a specific course for teaching in China that guarantees a job upon completion. If you’re looking to teach in either country, this is the best program for you.
Vantage offers both an in-person, four-week course and a hybrid course comprising both online training and an in-class practicum (in Bangkok). Prices start at $1,295 USD.
While expensive, in-classroom experience is invaluable. If you have the money, it’s a worthwhile investment.
6. International TEFL and TESOL Training (ITTT)
ITTT has a wide variety of online courses, ranging from a bare-bones 60-hour courses to comprehensive 470-hour courses. Its main 120-hour online TEFL course covers all the basics and costs $239 USD.
However, for an additional $110 USD, ITTT also offers the option of having a tutor to help you progress through the course. If you’re new to teaching and serious about finding a job, I’d suggest the tutor option. Having someone to help you progress through the course will ensure that you’ll get the most out of the course and better prepare you for the job ahead.
A Note on TESOL/CELTA Courses
In addition to the TEFL course, there are also TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) courses. These are essentially the same thing: programs focused on learning to teach English to adults. CELTA is Cambridge University’s branded version of the TESOL and the most in-depth (and most expensive) such course on the market.
Unless you specifically want to work with adults or are certain you want to start a career teaching English, I would stick with just taking a TEFL course. You can always upgrade later if you decide to continue teaching.
TEFL Frequently Asked Questions
How long are most TEFL courses? Most TEFL courses are 120 hours long. They usually last a few weeks to a few months, depending on the schedule. While some courses can be shorter, employers prefer teachers with at least 100 hours of training.
Are TEFL courses done online or in-person? Most TEFL courses are done online, though the best courses also include some in-person classroom time.
How much do TEFL courses cost? TEFL courses start at around $150 USD and can cost as much as $2,000 USD, depending on how much in-class time is included.
Should I do a TESOL or CELTA course instead? A TESOL or CELTA course is specifically for those looking to teach English to adults. Unless you specifically want to teach adults or are looking to start a career (rather than having just a temporary job), I would stick with a TEFL course.
That said, some TESOL courses are essentially the same as TEFL courses and they are marketed together. For those courses, either a TEFL or TESOL will suffice since the course content is the same.
CELTA courses, however, are much more intensive and expensive, usually $2,000-2,800 USD. They are specifically for teaching adults.
Do I need a bachelor’s degree? Having a degree is necessary for some TEFL programs, but not all of them. However, it will give you an advantage in the hiring process and when negotiating a salary.
***
Whether you’re looking to earn money to travel or want to start a new career, teaching English provides amazing opportunities for travel as well as personal and professional development.
By investing in a TEFL course you’ll be much better positioned to get hired in a country of your choosing. Not only that but you’ll have the skills and confidence to succeed on a day-to-day basis.
Teaching English abroad is an incredibly rewarding job and one that I’ve found enriches your travels. I can’t recommend it enough!

They try to make it as easy as possible for students to spend some time with their new English skills in ordinary conversational situations. NiceTalk tutors are distant employees who primarily interact with students through a video conferencing interface created for smartphones. From what I can collect on the site, the workflow seems really easy. Just go online with the program and await a tutoring request. There are a few different ways for students to get matched with a mentor. One is the random manner, which selects a mentor mechanically based on evaluations and other things. The other is direct manner where a student chooses a mentor from a list. Once you are paired with a student, your work is extremely simple. Just introduce yourself and get to a conversation. They have some tips in their FAQ for topics you can use if you run out of things to discuss. For a complete hour of tutoring, you will earn $10. They cover weekly through paypal, but you must get your balance over $20 to meet up with the payout threshold. If you want to earn more than this doing ESL tutoring and you’ve got a bachelor’s degree, you may consider applying to a business like VIPKid instead. Their requirements are more strict, but you’ll most likely earn more income. There are no constraints whatsoever in regards to scheduling. Usually, with tasks like this there’ll be peak times when more students are online, but it is totally up to you whether you want to be worried about that. The only skill requirement is an excellent ability to speak English. They prefer individuals with TEFL/TESOL/CELTA certificates, but these aren’t mandatory. To become a NiceTalk tutor, a fairly good online connection is crucial. To perform the job, you will want an Android or Apple device that could run the NiceTalk program. NiceTalk Application Procedure NiceTalk has a small section in their FAQ about their hiring process. From what they say, it seems relatively easy. However, the data is pretty skimpy, so there might be more to it. According to the directions, all you’ve got to do is register on the site, go download the program, run it, and follow the prompts. When you have completed those steps, you will have to record a brief introductory video so that they can get an idea of how well you speak English. there isn’t any mention of a complex interview process or anything like that, but I would not be amazed if there are more measures than the FAQ suggests. There were just a few reviews available, probably because this is a fairly new business, but all of the reviews were quite complimentary. Right now the business’s average score is 4.7 stars, which is pretty good, and far above average in comparison to many other language tutoring jobs on the market. Most of these reviews were not particularly detailed, but I managed to pick up on a few topics. The work appears to be relatively enjoyable and simple to do. The students are usually fantastic to work with and considerate. The business pays on time, and nobody has been griping about the pay rate, though it doesn’t seem to be rather high. There was one complaint about the absence of a desktop version of the app and a mention of occasional online connection difficulties. Someone else suggested it can be tough to find enough hours occasionally, which is not surprising, especially as it seems like this company is still in the process of establishing their client base. Obviously, you can never tell for certain if a job is truly legit before you try it on your own, but based on what I’m seeing, this seems OK. They do not have particularly stringent hiring requirements, and because they appear to be a relatively new company, it may be easier to get hired than it would be with one of the better recognized outfits. Bottom line: if you are interested in this sort of work, particularly in case you have some type of certificate in language tutoring, this gig could be worth looking into. Having said that, do not quit your day job for this. It is an independent contractor chance which means continuous work isn’t a guarantee. the Way to Get Started If you like the sound of NiceTalk and wish to have a shot at it, go here to get more information and place in your application. Remember — you’ll have to download the program and record a video presentation at some stage during the procedure, so wait till you’ve got a few minutes free, then go to a quiet place in your home before beginning. 5 Tricks to Beat Your Sweet Tooth Cravings
It's natural for us to have cravings. It's part of our body's way of telling us what it needs. For instance if you are low in iron you might crave red meat. If your body is low on potassium it might crave bananas. When a craving strikes the first thing you might want to try is drinking a large glass of water. Thirst often disguises itself as a craving. On the other hand your body does not need sugar - not the processed kind anyway. We have became creatures of habit by eating sweets for any and breakfast recipes . For instance ... How many times have you seen a parent give their toddler a cookie after falling down and getting hurt? How many times have you seen a parent give their children breakfast recipes especially sweets and chips to keep them quiet and content? As young children we are taught that healthy breakfast is the answer to many of our emotional woes. As adults we need to learn to BREAK the HABIT if we are to improve our health and gain control over our weight. You'll find that when you eat 3 balanced meals and 1 to 2 snacks per day your cravings and your sweet tooth will disappear. This isn't to say you have to give up sweets all together - The tricks listed below will let you enjoy sweets without letting your cravings and sweet tooth control you. 1. Procrastinate - When your craving hits tell yourself you will satisfy your sweet tooth after 5 to 30 minutes. When the time passes, try delaying it another 5 to 30 minutes. You'll find that most cravings will vanish after about 20 minutes. Make it a game to see how long you can go without eating sweets. 2. Eat Fruit - fruit is natures candy. Try a new fruit each week or month. There are several to choose from. Fruits will not only satisfy your sweet tooth, they provide essential vitamins and nutrients that fill you up and help control cravings. 3. Limit Sweets - Are you one of the many people that simply can't go with out sweets? If so you can save about 150 calories a day to enjoy a treat after dinner. 150 calories is about 1 ounce of chocolate, 1/2 cup of ice cream, a small slice of cake or a Hostess cupcake. You may want to check out the lower calorie versions of your favorite sweets - you might find that a Skinny Cow ice cream satisfies your sweet tooth cravings. 4. Bank Calories - Eat a meal or two that consists of a lean mean green salad and other very low calorie egg . Use light dressing. The calories you saved from your meals will allow you to enjoy a decadent high calorie dessert that you've been craving. Your sweet tooth will be satisfied and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that you stayed in control. 5. Learn to Relax - If you are an emotional eater, learning to relax will help reduce stress which often times can lead to a binge. Use guided imagery - just close your eyes and imagine yourself at your favorite place. This might be at the beach, in the mountains, on a cruise, or on an exotic island. Another tip to relax is to listen to music. Studies show that when you relax you're decreasing the production of cortisol which can lead to carbohydrate cravings. Practice these techniques and you will be in control of your sweet tooth - instead of it controlling you.
Getting Through College Starts With These Tips!
Many college students feel both excitement and trepidation about beginning a new stage in their life. Some people learn more life skills in college than academic information. Juggling educational Tesol Certification demands and routine chores can be tough, but it is all part of the learning process.
If you are simply unable to scrape together enough money for tuition, look into an education loan. Although you probably don't want to be in debt, college can eventually bring large profits to you in the future. Therefore, it's probably best you get in a little debt so that your future is as bright as possible.
You can save money on textbooks by buying them only when your class starts. You may figure out later that the books aren't even required. This happens often with online schooling. Many times, the posts and lectures are enough to do the course right.
You should get to know the professors of your classes. Your teachers can provide a great deal of resources. Ask whatever you wish, even if it's for assistance. Establishing a rapport with professors can result in higher grades and enhanced opportunities.
Make time to study daily. There are many distractions in college, so you need to schedule your time. Each day, designate at least one hour towards studying. Even if studying is not really needed on a particular day, do it anyway. Doing so reinforces your commitment and helps your form a good habit.
One great way to save money while going to college is to purchase used text books. Brand new textbooks are outrageously priced. The book's material is the same, so there is no reason not to purchase them used.
Know the number to campus security. There generally is an easy procedure to get into touch with the campus police or security, so be sure you're aware of what to do. Hopefully, it's not something you're going to have to utilize, but you never know what may happen.
You should get in the habit of taking notes during lectures. Taking notes in and of itself aids in learning. Also, it will help you have the necessary information to successfully complete your course. Even though you may know this information, note taking is a great habit to get into.

Spend time in the library on campus! These libraries offer resources that no other place can provide. Talk to the librarian and ask for her help if you need it. Also, you can find used books for cheap on the bulletin boards at the library.

Best online TEFL course?
What’s the best online TEFL course? I found a question on Quora called “what’s the best online TEFL certification program”. I thought I would chime in with my experience.http://www.eslinsider.com/blog/best-o…The best online TEFL course for you really depends on what you want. And who you want to teach. And maybe even where you want to teach. http://www.eslinsider.com/eslinsider-…If you want the most reputable TEFL certificate then choose CELTA, but it’s not really an online TEFL course. It’s only partly an online course. Most courses focus on teaching adults – like CELTA. Which is not “very “useful if you end up teaching children (young learners).THE BEST ONLINE TEFL COURSE IS GOING TO TRAIN YOU TO TEACH THE STUDENTS THAT YOU ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO TEACH.I wouldn’t pick an online TEFL course because: 1. It’s popular 2. Because it’s 150 hours 3. Because it’s the cheapest 4. The most reputableYou can do all those, but none of them are necessarily going to help you do your job better.Pick one because you think it’s going to help you to do your job better.Figure out who and where you want to teach first.MY STORY… the short versionI took a TESOL course in a classroom. I chose one that was close to where I was living. Although it was 3 hours away in Montreal, Canada. Yeah, I was living with my parents at that time in the boondocks. It was a hybrid in-class/take home course from a popular provider, but man when I got abroad (1st to Taiwan) I learned that I didn’t know s$*! about teaching English to kids! You can learn more about my story here on the home page:http://www.course.eslinsider.com—————————————————————————————–ESLinsider serves up fresh resources for ESL teachers: how-to videos, online TEFL courses, interviews with ESL teachers in Asia, ebooks and a blog.
