idk how i feel abt amara saying that dean’s (and sam’s by extension) life wouldn’t have been any better if mary hadn’t died bc if mary hadn’t died john couldn’t have abused and neglected his kids and imo that’s definitely better than being abused. and that’s not even getting into the idea that mary not dying wouldn’t have been better than burning to death horribly for MARY

like i understand that dean holding onto a perfect picture of her isn’t true to mary or doing her justice but the abuse apologism and misogyny of that statement positively reeks

15.15: Gimme Shelter - My Review

For a Sam-and-Dean-lite episode, I actually really enjoyed this one! Giving Cas and Jack their own case to work (where they both ended up being the most supernatural element of it) was a really good dynamic--as the crossroads demon said so well, “I’d watch that show”. It’s so nice seeing Jack as the somewhat sweet and innocent man-toddler again; I like his character much more when he has a soul. Also, Cas’s testimony at the prayer circle made me wonder just how close he is to being truly happy... though Jack’s confession at the end may have dosed that happiness with very cold water. I love the fact that, even so close to the end of the series, we still can get really good character moments and character development from secondary characters like Jack and Cas.

The scene with Dean and Amara was definitely the best part of the episode. My heart breaks for Dean now that he knows why Amara really brought Mary back, but it honestly wasn’t unexpected, given the character arc they took her on. Learning that your parents are human just like everyone else can be one of the hardest things a person will confront in their lifetime, and when you place them on a pedestal at four years old and make their death the driving force behind your entire life... it’s the difference between toppling a statue in your neighborhood park and tearing down the Washington Monument. Do I think it was necessary for him to have to face up to his mother’s humanity? Dunno. But I am glad that the show addressed it and spelled out in clear language exactly what Dean (and by extension we, as the audience) was supposed to get out of her return, because then maybe it will help some people who have been angry about the way Mary was portrayed post-resurrection to gain a little perspective on the whole thing. I don’t expect the people who hated the choice to like it all of a sudden, but knowing that it was intentional might do the ‘fandom discourse’ some good. And, even more importantly, hopefully this will help Dean find a little more peace with his mother’s second death.

As for the case that Jack and Cas worked, I definitely did not see the twist coming, though as I think back on it, a few of the signs were definitely there. I look forward to watching the episode again with an eye on the pastor’s daughter, to see what other clues may have been dropped early on, and I am definitely curious to know if the fact that the ‘policeman’ that took her away was the crossroads demon will have any repercussions, or if that was just Cas letting him ‘help’ with the case. All in all, a very enjoyable episode, with a good ‘monster-of-the-week’ vibe and some good leads in the direction of the finale.
