It’s easy to fall back into his routine in his father’s house, even if that routine now includes Emma along with Conor. Each morning Pawel gets the kids up, dressed, and out the door with a healthy lunch in hand. Each afternoon he meets the bus again to collect them and walk back to the house for an afternoon snack and homework. By Wednesday it’s easy, even if Pawel is walking them to the bus in the morning while wearing sweats and a hoodie and slides on his feet. He can’t see the point in getting up early enough to fight with the kids and his father to get time in the shower, when he can just wait until he has the place to himself.

Besides, this way it doesn’t matter if he uses the entire living room as his changing space and walks through the house in a towel. He can spend as long in the shower as he wants, using up as much hot water as he wants. And no one critiques his singing voice.

It’s not like he has anywhere else he needs to be.

His skin is pruning at the tips of his fingers when he emerges from the shower, skin red from the heat of the water. He wraps one towel around his waist, using another to rub his hair dry. It’s getting long. He really should find someplace to get it cut properly, or else just buzz it off again.

Pawel peers in the decorative mirror that Dad hung in the living room, combing through his hair with his fingers. He pulls the strands straight. Yeah. Definitely too long.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you with hair that long.”

“Jesus fucking Christ.” Pawel grabs the edge of his towel as he turns, his free hand out as if Chelsea’s going to attack him. “Doors, Chelsea. Doorbells.”

“Shadows,” she responds. She slides off the couch, shoving her hands into the pockets of her jeans. Her hair is pulled back into a neat ponytail, and if it weren’t for her bare feet, she’d be mostly presentable. Human. “It didn’t seem like Conor was here, so I came to visit.”

Pawel is wearing only a towel and feeling very underdressed. “Visiting is fine, just… let me get dressed, okay?” He grabs clothes from the stacks of laundry that he hasn’t bothered to put away yet—it’s not like he actually has a place to store anything here—and walks away. “You stay here,” he orders as he heads into the bathroom. “Give me five minutes.”

It doesn’t take that long, but he manages to brush his teeth and do something with his hair after he dresses. When he emerges, Chelsea is looking at the pictures hanging on the wall. She touches one, her expression clouded.

“I’m sorry I missed seeing him grow up,” she says softly. “You’ve done such a good job with him. You’re a good father.”

“I kind of had to be.”

Wait.

Pawel groans, pushing his hands through his hair. “That came out wrong. I’m not angry about it. It’s just a thing that is, and I wouldn’t give up the last nine years for anything. I love Conor. And thank you. I like to think I’m managing, but there are days when I wonder.”

Chelsea lingers with her touch on one photo as she turns. “Do you think I can get to know him? I should give him time, right? To come to terms with the fact that I’m not actually dead.”

“I think he’s got a lot to deal with, yes,” Pawel agrees. Chelsea’s existence isn’t the only bomb that’s been dropped in Conor’s world. “He’s adaptable, and he’s curious. While he hasn’t talked to me yet, I’m sure he’s parsing it in his own way. You’ll just need to give him that time, and be ready when he’s ready.”

“And be around.” Chelsea flashes a quick smile at his look. “If I’m available, then he can tell me when he’s ready.”

Pawel can’t really argue with that hypothesis. “You can be around, but only if he’s okay with it,” he agrees. “You can’t steamroll him.”

“I won’t.” Chelsea pulls out one of the chairs from the table. “I’d offer to take you out to coffee, or to get something to eat, but I don’t have any money. Eventually I’m going to need to get a job.”

“I—” Pawel stops abruptly. “I should have thought of that. You and Mattie—and any other Shadows who might have returned—don’t technically exist anymore. According to official records, you’re dead.”

“That can be fixed.” Chelsea’s feet swing, toes brushing against the floor. “Mattie met up with those Mages in Vermont—she introduced me, too. One of them suggested getting a Technomancer to help us out. Not that they condone doing anything illegal.”

It’s going to be illegal. Pawel can’t see any other way to do it; the law doesn’t know how to deal with cases like this. After more than a decade, the law still struggles to deal with normal issues regarding Talent. New ones are going to take a while to come to terms with.

“When I have an identity again, I’ll get a job. I just need to figure out what I want to do.”

“In the meantime,” Pawel says slowly. “I’ve got a project I’m working on, and I could use your help.”

Her fingers hook on the edge of the chair as she leans on her hands, her legs tucked back beneath her seat. “Oh? What is it?”

“You met Emma.” It occurs to Pawel that he hasn’t actually eaten breakfast yet. He fed two kids, he made lunches, but he hasn’t made himself something to eat. He gets the coffee maker running first, then puts bread in the toaster oven. “Her parents disappeared. Abruptly. Happy family, then one day they just weren’t there anymore.”

“Oh.” Chelsea’s voice falls, soft and slow. “You think one of them…?”

“That’s what I thought of when I heard her story,” Pawel admits. “And I watched Emma adding two and two and getting a big red four when she met you. It’s a hypothesis that fits the facts, as far as I know them. Since I promised Conor that I’d help look for Emma’s parents, I was wondering if that might be something you could possibly help with.”

She smiles slightly. “Since I’m a Shadowwalker.”

The toaster oven dings. Pawel pulls out the slices and scrapes butter across the surface. “Well. Yes.”

“You sound like someone from out of state assuming that all New Yorkers know each other, because obviously we all live on the same block down in the city.” Her tone is dry, even though she giggles afterwards. “I don’t know every other Shadowwalker, and I wouldn’t know how to find them,” Chelsea admits. “The Dreaming is a place to start, since so many of us were trapped in the Split.”

The Dreamscape and the Split. Pawel has some very vivid memories of both of those, along with the sort of Shadowwalkers who were trapped there. He licks his lips. “I haven’t had the best experience with going into the Dreamscape in the past,” he admits. “Remember? We managed to pass through there accidentally and end up in another world. And the only guide I know is easily distracted.”

“I helped you get back,” Chelsea reminds him. “And I helped Seth and Nikolai get home when they were done here.”

There is so much about traveling through the realm of Dreams that Pawel doesn’t understand. He wants to know more about it—there are books upon books to be written, he thinks—but he doesn’t want to take that kind of risk. “I can’t leave Conor,” he says quietly. “But if you have a way to find out something without dragging someone into the Dreams that doesn’t belong, I’d appreciate it. I’m just looking for a direction to start looking, and to figure out if it’s even a good direction in the first place. It’s a valid hypothesis, but it might not be the only one. It was just the first thing that came to mind.”

“I’ll talk to Mattie.” Chelsea reaches out as Pawel sets his plate on the table, stealing one piece of toast. “She might be able to help. We’ll do our best anyway.”

Pawel was going to sit down, but maybe not yet. “Are you hungry?” he asks. “Do you want breakfast?”

Chelsea nibbles on the toast. “If you’re cooking, I could eat.”

Okay then. Pawel throws two more slices into the toaster oven, then gets out eggs and a pan. “Where are you staying, anyway?” He breaks eggs into a bowl, whisking them together with some herbs, salt, and pepper.

She shrugs. “Sometimes with Mattie. Sometimes in Vermont. Sometimes wherever I end up. It’s complicated, because like we just talked about, I don’t actually exist or have any kind of an income.”

Pawel makes a mental note to talk to his contacts in Burlington. “A part of me wants to tell you to stay here, Chelsea, but I can’t,” he admits. “There’s just no room. This is a two bedroom place that’s really meant for one person to live in. Conor and Emma are in the guest room. I’m on the couch.” He pours the eggs into the pan, quickly scrambling them. He’s all too aware that Chelsea is silent behind him, as if she’s waiting for some small crumb.

“You can come back tonight. Or hang out with me today and be here this evening,” Pawel offers. “It’ll give you a chance to spend more time with Conor. And meet my dad.”

“I’ve met your dad.” Chelsea touches her flat belly. “I was about six months pregnant the last time I saw him. He was… not thrilled, but we got along. I don’t know if he blames me for messing up your life, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he does.”

“It’s been nine years.” Which is a simplistic way of putting it, but at the same time, it’s a large part of the truth. Things are different now than they were when Pawel was abruptly a single father in the middle of college. “I haven’t told him you’re back yet,” Pawel admits. “So that will have to be the first part of the conversation. But yes. If you’d like to try again with Conor tonight, that’s fine. I just have one condition.”

Chelsea reaches for the plate when Pawel hands it to her with a second slice of toast and her portion of the eggs. “What is it?” She stabs the eggs with her fork, scooping up a large mouthful.

“If Conor isn’t ready—if he asks you to leave and give him more time—you do that.” Pawel doesn’t touch his breakfast, watching Chelsea’s reaction. He waits as she lowers her fork, slowly chewing on her food. “Conor’s smarter than most people give him credit for,” Pawel says quietly. “And I refuse to make decisions that my child should have the chance to make for himself. Yes, I have rules. I set bedtimes. I make sure he does his homework and eats a relatively balanced diet. But something like this he needs to have a say in. And if he says he isn’t ready, I’m going to listen to him.”

Her gaze drops, the tines of her fork tapping against the plate. “Okay,” she says, meeting his gaze again. “If Conor says leave, I’ll go. And your dad?”

“Believe it or not, Conor gets first say in this one. You’re his mother.” Pawel pushes eggs onto one corner of his toast. “Dad’s not going to push you out if Conor actually wants you here.” He shoves the toast in his mouth; taking a too-big bite is a great excuse to stop talking.

Chelsea finishes her food before Pawel. As soon as he’s done, she takes both sets of dishes and rinses everything off to put them in the empty dishwasher. She does the rest of the dishes as well, everything going into the dishwasher except for the pan, which she washes and leaves in the drainer. As she’s wiping her hands on a towel, she turns to ask, “Okay. So. What are we doing today?”

It’s still early, and Pawel doesn’t think he can manage to do the one thing he really needs to do until after lunch. “Research,” he says. “Which is likely to be boring. If you want to step out and come back for lunch, we’ll head out after that.”

“Or you could give me a tour of your home town,” Chelsea suggests. “Since you never actually brought me out here. I’d love to see where you grew up.”

Pawel gives her a dark look. “You want to run into someone and get more stories that you can hold over my head.”

“Possibly that, too.” She kisses his cheek. “What do you think of individual pizzas for dinner tonight? We can pick up everything, and I’ll make sauce. So. Tour. Then lunch out, and your errand, and shopping. Make sure your dad is home for dinner. He will be, right?”

“He got in early enough, so he should be.” But just in case, Pawel pulls out his phone and sends off a quick text to Dad to let him know the plan. He gets a pepperoni pizza emoji in return, and makes a mental note of the request. He assumes it’s a request. It may also be the only pizza emoji available. No, knowing his dad, it’s a request for something other than healthy pizza.

“So?” Chelsea prompts.

“Fine. Tour. But we’re not talking to anyone who knew me when I was a kid,” Pawel says firmly. “This is not a way for you to gain ammunition in your attempts to give me shit. Also, you need to go wherever it is you keep your things and get shoes. You can’t go barefoot.”

“I’ll get shoes,” she agrees. Her hand covers his briefly, warm and very human as she squeezes. “I love teasing you. You blush. But don’t worry, I’ll be good. I just want to do all the things we never got the chance to do. Hopefully this time I get to stick around for a long time.”

Conor’s not the only one who has to get used to the idea of Chelsea being back in their life. Pawel isn’t sure there’s a Chelsea-shaped hole. Or rather, there was one, but he’s filled it in so many different ways. He’s not sure where she fits now that almost a decade has passed.

He pushes back from the table. He drags his fingers through his hair, finger-combing it into some semblance of presentability, then smoothes over his clothes. Okay. He’s ready for this. He can’t really go home again, but he can at least drive around the place. Or places. He makes a mental list: childhood home, then the home before that, all the schools he attended, some of the places he liked to hang out. Lunch at that seasonal place downtown. And finally a stop at the dojang before they head to the store.

Perhaps with Chelsea by his side—a reminder of the fact that life has most definitely moved on—he can avoid falling into the memories of the past. On the other hand, seeing Leo and Colt has dragged his mind there already; he’s not sure he can fully claw his way out.

Or that he wants to.

Security Researcher Discovers Snippet of CSS Code That Forces iOS to Reboot, Apple Investigating

A new iOS vulnerability was discovered by a security researcher over the weekend, causing affected iPhones and iPads to crash and restart when following a link to an HTML page hosting specially crafted CSS code. The vulnerability hits the WebKit rendering engine used in Safari by applying a CSS effect -- "backdrop-filter" -- that requires enough heavy graphics processing to cause iOS to crash completely. Software engineer and security researcher Sabri Haddouche, who works for encrypted messaging app Wire, discovered the vulnerability and shared videos of its effects on Twitter. Haddouche also discussed his findings with ZDNet: "The attack uses a weakness in the -webkit-backdrop-filter CSS property, which uses 3D acceleration to process elements behind them," Haddouche told ZDNet in an interview. "By using nested divs with that property, we can quickly consume all graphic resources and freeze or kernel panic the OS." Apple has been notified of the vulnerability, and Haddouche confirmed that the company is actively investigating the issue. The researcher also notes that the CSS code in its current form will freeze Safari on macOS "for a minute," and then slow it down, but the Mac won't crash. However, a modified version with Javascript could end with the same outcome as the iOS version, crashing the Mac computer that it's on. Haddouche didn't publish the modified macOS vulnerability because once the computer reboots, Safari persists and the browser is automatically launched again with the same result, resulting in a cycle of reboots. The researcher says that he discovered the vulnerabilities during research for denial of service bugs on different web browsers. 1. What is the highest education level you’d like to achieve(I mean title, as in ‘doctor’)?

I’d be happy honestly if I only got a 2 year associates degree. but, Bachelor’s in Graphic Design here I come! Or Animation! Idk yet! This is America!

2. Favourite accessory you own?

I’m boring, I don’t even have my ears pierced. C̶l̶o̶t̶h̶e̶s̶ er, Nail Polish?

3. If did not have to worry about missing work/school and money, where would you like to travel?

Everywhere! But I can narrow it to a few (:

-Canada! even though I've been there a thousand times (: In another life,I would probably be a lonely cat-lady living in Canada. I go there every year with my family for Valentines day since its literally less than a days trip across the border.

-Germany! My boyfriend came to the states as a toddler from Cologne, and I would really like to see his native country from his perspective. Plus I’ve never been to Europe so why not

-Iceland. Because I feel as though it would be a home away from home. Very natural landscapes, yet Scandi ties: just like my small home town and my northwest tree-huggers (we’re pretty into our forests and mountains sometimes). My friend and I have planned to go there when we finish college, but who knows honestly.

-Zimbabwe. To fulfill my childhood dream when I did a big report on it (x And it would be interesting to go somewhere where I would be the minority, not the majority. My family has Black, White, Native, and Mexican in it, and I think engaging in some type of multiculturalism and stepping out of a comfort zone is important.

4. Cute story you witnessed on the streets/public transportation?

In Canada once a lady in a wheel chair was insisting she was a burden and annoying everyone when she got on the bus. but nearly everyone on the bus insisted that no, she wasn’t, and like 5 people pitched in to help fold up seats so she could have a proper place to park her wheelchair. Gotta love Canadians

5. How and why did you get your first mobile phone?

Christmas, “Santa” said it was on sale. Nothing much to it

7. Thoughts on ‘classical’ literature?

I think like most of my peers who went through any sort of basic English education, I thought Shakespeare and the like were super-duper boring. That is, until I got into languages and linguistics more seriously. Its kinda like “bam! this actually makes sense. Omgosh haha, this is actually funny”. However I don’t think I will ever understand the dialects Mark Twain uses in Huck Finn.

8. Thoughts on ‘modern’ music?

Haha, I’ll listen to anything, honeslty (: (Secretly, 13 yr old me still has a crush on Justin Bieber). Seriously though, I grew up with my mom listening to country, my dad listening to rock, and a whole lot of folk songs from Norway and Sweden since my sister was in a Norwegian Dancing group for like 12 years haha. So case in point: I'm not picky with music, modern is just another Genre.

9. What would you love to have for dinner?

Anything Vegan, I think it’s more interesting to not use meat and make a true meal of it. But otherwise, I’m a plain-jane, anything that I can make with my Grandma-Chicken Noddle Soup, sugar cookies, krumkake, l̶u̶t̶e̶f̶i̶s̶k̶, idk. Potatoes?

10. Most stupid inside joke you have/had with people? Funniest joke you ever heard?

My inside jokes are pretty bad, so...Id rather....not....same with funny...kinda....ashamed..

I knew Seventeen even pre-debut and they were cute and everything and I was a fan but I guess what made me slip into the diamond life so hard that there’s no way back was the ASC episode where I got a chance to talk to them. 3.
