Information gathering has always been XingChen’s domain.
It is not precisely that ZiChen lacks the necessary skills to gather information on his own. For many years now, they have been partners on equal ground, sharing both pleasant and unpleasant tasks. But some areas are better left to XingChen. There is something about his placid nature and gentle countenance that invites confidence. People simply find themselves telling XingChen the most intimate details of their lives, frequently without any urging on his part.
ZiChen does not posses this particular skill. He is certainly capable of extracting information, but it is always done by a more direct means. XingChen’s way may yield better results, but it also takes a great amount of time and restraint, neither of which ZiChen has in abundance.
Even now, waiting in Nie HuaiSang’s receiving hall, he finds that his patience is growing thin.
XingChen hates it here.
Even as a child, XingChen had disliked the Immortal Mountain, the court rules, the pretense of politeness, and the clandestine tactics. At the age of twelve, he could play the court games with the best of them. The fact that he had survived YanLing DaoRen’s reign speaks volumes of his abilities and his endurance. But ZiChen does not remember ever seeing XingChen truly happy here, even as a child, even during those early, peaceful years, before YanLing DaoRen had fully sank into the grip of madness.
ZiChen had been fourteen years old when YanLing DaoRen himself had tasked him with protecting the little Prince.
At the time, ZiChen had been little better than a servant. The Song family may have begun its service under the Immortal Empress herself, but they had never climbed to any position that matters. ZiChen’s grandfather had been the Lieutenant General for all of three months, before a mercenary arrow ended that advancement. ZiChen’s uncle had died in a cradle. And ZiChen’s father, a mild-mannered, generous man, had always had a better head for numbers than any other skill which may have elevated his family. As a teenager, ZiChen had been a scrappy, permanently angry youth, who took forever to grow into his ears. He had picked fights with anyone who looked at him the wrong way, and took pride in winning each time.
YanLing DaoRen had liked ZiChen, but he had throughly misunderstood his character. ZiChen may have been devoted to the little Prince, but his devotion was impossible to come by, and in the end, he had none left over for the Emperor himself. When YanLing DaoRen had decided that the little Prince had to die, he had found, to his chagrin, that the youth he had tasked with protecting XingChen had become his greatest obstacle.
ZiChen understands why XingChen hates the Immortal Mountain. It is not only the memories of his past life that give him discomfort, but who he is forced to be in the present, taking part in affairs he would rather avoid. They had come searching for a murderer, but XingChen is currently trapped in a pitched battle between the Emperor and the Council, trying to find a middle ground on a matter that should be the least of their concerns.
ZiChen believes that the Emperor should marry whoever he wants. He does not understand why a dozen sect leaders and every Imperial official somehow must have a say on the subject.
Still, when in the Immortal Mountain City, XingChen is the Emperor’s only blood relative. He may be the notorious Rogue Prince who had abandoned his rank and his title, but when XingChen spoke, even the High Councilor did not dare interrupt.
It is not a bad thing, for the Empress’ brother to shake up the existing power structures. Between XingChen and the Emperor, the Council will find themselves reconsidering the scope of their influence. But this left ZiChen having to do everything else, even those tasks which he is utterly unqualified to perform.
Luckily, there is one person in this forsaken City that ZiChen does not abhor, and if allowed to see him, ZiChen is likely to find his task much easier to accomplish.
Finally, a servant appears from a side door, just when ZiChen is about to lose the last of his patience.
“The Royal Companion will see you now.”
ZiChen follows her into the Royal Companion’s study, a room as eccentric as its owner.
Silver-green drapes, a fortune worth of silk, temporarily hide the Royal Companion’s desk. The green carpet is so thick, ZiChen feels his feet sinking with each step. The space is not small, but it is visually overwhelming. Dozens of paintings lay discarded in piles. Shelves filled with books and scrolls and sheafs of loose paper cover an entire wall. A single, intricately carved stand holds a heavy saber, its steel glinting menacingly next to messy piles of silver brocade. Another stand holds a dozen painted fans, each one impossibly delicate, the lines feather-light.
Nie HuaiSang is seated at his desk, another fan spread out on a small stand, a paint brush in his hand. He does not rise from his seat.
ZiChen does not feel himself slighted. He respects this boy, a child really, regardless of his youth and temper. He is the only person ZiChen had ever met whose devotion matches his own. As ZiChen would burn the world for XingChen, Nie HuaiSang would do the same for the Emperor. Their methods may differ, but in essence, he had found they were very much the same where it mattered.
ZiChen bows, “Greeting the Royal Companion to the Emperor.”
“No need for such formality, Daozhang. Come have a seat. Should I ask for tea?”
“No need. I am only here to inquire about the recent events in the Immortal Mountain.”
Nie HuaiSang places his brush aside with care, “I believe that the Emperor has given me a diluted version of your hunt. Not intentionally, you understand, but he has been-- rather preoccupied with other matters.”
ZiChen fights the urge to roll his eyes. The Emperor is eighteen and in love for the first time. If his behavior in YiLing is anything to go by, preoccupied is a fairly mild word. They are lucky that the Emperor is managing to focus on anything else of importance.
“I would appreciate a detailed accounting of this-- murderer, and any other information you may have. In turn,” Nie HuaiSang says, “I am willing to place my considerable influence at your disposal in the pursuit of this creature.”
“The Royal Companion is thoughtful and reasonable,” ZiChen says, “How may I repay this generosity?”
Nie HuaiSang smiles, “As it happens, I am hunting as well. I would very much appreciate your assistance.”

The Reconnected Series
Aged-Up Characters, Awkward Flirting, Second-hand Embarrassment, Dorks in Love. (19,322 words) (Works: 4)
A loosely connected series of stories based around Izuku and Ochako as twenty-something pro-heroes who haven't been in touch much since graduating but have reconnected and found that the spark between them is still there.
Saw This. Thought of You - (Love Confessions, First Kiss, A Little Bit Spicy, They’re Both Kind Of Thirsty.) --- Izuku Midoriya is the up-and-coming, talented and hard working pro-hero Deku. Unfortunately for him, Izuku Midoriya is also a nineteen year old boy.An unexpected birthday present from his old high school crush reminds him of this. Hard. ---
Green's Your Color - (Fluff, No Really - So Much Fluff.) --- Izuku has a question he really wants to ask Ochako, and a gift he wants to give to her, but he can't quite find the courage to do it. After all, it's his heart that's on the line. ---
Keep Me Warm - (Fluff, Blame The Hormones.) --- Izuku is sick, and there's no amount of snow that can keep Ochako from crossing the city to take care of him. While she's there an opportunity to try on something she's always wanted to try presents itself, and she doesn't have the willpower to resist. She's pretty sure he's asleep, so it'll be fine, right? ---
Stronger Than Our Nightmares - (True Love, Relationship Goals, Light Angst, Implied Spice.) --- She told herself it was just for training; floating higher than she knew she should. For tonight she’d just wanted to escape, and that meant going higher than usual; pushing herself right up into the limit of the cold temperatures and thin air that her body could endure. As long as Izuku didn't find out about her late night 'training' everything would be fine. ---

But it's up to her to go out there and ask him! ... It's only one little question, right?
.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.
Moth Dust
Fantasy AU, Animal Ears, Moth!Ochako, Epic Adventure (Eventually). (12,498 words)
'Just follow the moth - guided by the moonlight - you'll never be lost.' ---- There's a sketch of a man he thinks he met in a dream, a message he can't quite remember, a war he never asked to be involved in and a cute girl who turns into a moth. Izuku gets caught up in an adventure he could never have imagined. And his imagination is pretty wild.
.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.
Pre-Exam Pancakes (or not)
Quirk Shenanigans, Fluff and Humour, Pancakes. (4,286 words)
It's the night before an important test so maybe Ochako shouldn't be too surprised that it's special. ('Special' is just a nice way of summing up the weirdness that ensues). She's going to blame it on the pancakes...
.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.*.-.
The Light Inside
Fantasy AU, Mage!Ochako, Swordsman!Izuku, Spooky Atmosphere, Courage. (7,131 words)
Izuku isn't sure whether he should count the Enchanted Sword he's been gifted a curse or a blessing. The legacy he's been left is almost too grand to imagine, but he might just be able to grow into it with time and with the support of Ochako. If they can only escape the forest alive.

Misc Oneshots
Memories That Make Us - (Domestic Fluff, Aged-Up Characters, Established Relationship, Izuku and Ochako’s Daughter.) --- A box with the word 'Memories' scribbled on its side is all it takes for them to fall into reminiscing through their lives together. A Kiss Among The Stars - (Fluff, Zero Gravity Kisses, Dorks In Love, Supportive Izuku.) --- Ochako isn't sure what to expect when Izuku sneaks her out of her dorm in the middle of the night, or when he puts a blindfold on her and declares he's taking her for some secret, special quirk training. Chapter 12: Papa Bear Mode (Spider-boy - Peter Parker x Stark!Reader)
WAH! Here’s Chapter 12!!!
I’ve watched FFH thrice and it still gets to me. Ugh, I love our little baby spider-boy.
Prologue, Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6, Chapter 7, Chapter 8, Chapter 9, Chapter 10, Chapter 11, Chapter 13
Enjoy!!!
“Live in Madrid, watching the world’s favorite sport,” Peter mumbles as he holds his phone camera up high, filming another vlog.
“Also Peter’s first time to watch real football… not American football.” Y/n makes sure that the camera hears the remark.
“I forgot you’re part-European. Figures.” Peter scoffs jokingly, pointing the camera at her.
You just roll your eyes at him before noticing that one of the players scored a goal.
“GOAL!!!” Y/n shouts at the top of her lungs.
“Isn’t this fun?!” You sit back down beside Peter.
“I’ve never watched soccer before and this is pretty fun.” Peter laughs along, sporting the home team’s scarf.
“If I knew how hectic this whole thing is, I would’ve gotten us one of those VIP seats.” Tony grumbles, putting on his sunglasses, not so much for sun protection as it is night time, mainly just to hide his annoyance of it all.
Tony decided to join in watching the match at the last minute. It was either he goes around Madrid by himself or watches the game with Y/n and Peter.
“Our seats are amazing by the way. We’re like a few meters away from the players.” Peter looks at the football players in awe.
“It’s almost the 90th minute, we need one more goal.” Y/n grumbles tapping her feet uncontrollably.
“I’ve never seen you so tense, sweetie. I should bring you to sports events more often.” Tony looks at you in amusement.
“Oh no, you’re not dragging me into watching basketball with you. I’m not a fan.” You shake your head in disagreement.
“I’ll watch with you, Mr. Stark.” Peter volunteers.
“I’ll hold you to it, Parker.” Tony nods.
“Oh my god!” You are at the edge of your seat as you watch the striker head towards the penalty area.
“Come on! You can do it.” Peter stands up as you do the same.
“Holy shit.” You mumble.
“GOAAAAAAL!” The arena echoes in celebration.
You and Peter look at each other with grins on your faces. Peter ends his video as you grab the back of his head and kiss him for at least a good 5 seconds. Tony clears his throat looking at the two teenagers in the middle of an intimate celebratory embrace.
“Hi, dad.” Y/n awkwardly laughs.
“You’re grounded when we get back to New York, young lady.” Tony states, his face is stiff from being on Papa Bear mode.
The three walk out of the arena and see Happy parked right outside the stadium. Peter and Y/n are attached at the hip, hand-holding and cheek-kissing.
“Now you know how I feel.” Happy laughs as soon as he sees Tony’s annoyed expression.
“Remind me to lock the windows in Y/n’s room the second we get back to New York.” Tony tells Happy the second the two teenagers enter the car.
“They’re good kids, Tony. It’s just puppy love.” Happy shrugs his shoulders.
“Based on the kisses I just saw, I don’t think so.” Tony scoffs.
Happy just chuckles before sliding inside the driver’s seat. Tony slides in beside Y/n.
“Dinner at the hotel?” Tony suggests.
“Yes, please! I’m craving for Tapas right now.” You jump in your seat, the adrenaline from the football game still running fast.
“I take it your team won, Y/n?” Happy asks as he pulls into the traffic.
“Yes, we did win, with just seconds to spare before the 90th minute.” Y/n replies proudly.
Peter looks at you in amusement, still overwhelmed that he’s in Spain with the Starks and watched an actual game live.
“I have to admit, I’m starting to get why you’re into this sport.” Peter laughs.
“Well, I’m part French. I watched a lot of games in Paris with my brother. I’m so glad you enjoyed your first football game.” You giggle, taking Peter’s hand in yours.
The two teenagers intertwine their fingers, a blush creeping on both faces.
“I knew I should’ve brought Pepper with me.” Tony grumbles in his seat.
He doesn’t miss the hand-holding action happening between his daughter and Peter. He just shrugs it off and hides a smile.
‘If I have to give away my daughter to some guy, Peter Parker would be fine with me. He better not break her heart or there would be hell to pay.’ Tony thinks to himself, looking out the window.
Peter rubs his thumb across Y/n’s knuckles. 2 months after meeting Tony Stark, he’s been to multiple Stark Industries events, traveled to two countries, and got himself a girlfriend in the process. It’s all been too surreal for him that if he blinks long enough, he’d be back to his boring old life in Queens.
“You want to go around the city tomorrow morning? I mean, we do leave for New York in the afternoon, but if you’re up for it, we can like, stroll around or something?” Y/n suggests to Peter.
“That’d be awesome! Where will we go?” He asks.
“The palace, Plaza Mayor, Mercado de San Miguel…. Anywhere in a span of 6 hours.” You shrug your shoulders.
“Six hours?!” Peter raises his voice.
“Yeah?! Are six hours too short? We can always go out at 7 am, but I doubt anything will be open by then.” Y/n replies.
“No no, it’s fine! I just didn’t think that we’d need six hours just to tour around Madrid, that’s all.” Peter clarifies.
“We’re only here for two days. Might as well take advantage of it. We can always just ‘swing’ around.” You joke, emphasizing the word ‘swing’.
“I mean if it’ll beat traffic, why not?” Peter agrees.
“There will be no Spidey action when I’m around.” Tony interrupts the two of you.
“Sorry, Mr. Stark.” Peter apologies.
“Fine.” You grumble.
Happy stops in front of the hotel and one of the hotel security opens the car door for Tony.
“Mr. Stark.” He greets with his thick Spanish accent.
Y/n and Peter follow Tony towards the hotel’s restaurant, La Rotonda.
“Feel free to eat your heart out, kids,” Tony tells you and Peter as the waiter shows you to your table.
“I don’t see why all of us have to share one suite?” You grumble, walking out of the bathroom in your pink pajamas.
“Because I don’t want to see anyone try and sneak out from his room to go to another room and do whatever it is that hormonal teenagers do.” Tony looks at you and Peter.
“We’ll be in the living room.” You tell your dad, grabbing Peter’s hand.
“Lights out by 12!” Tony exclaims.
“Check on them from time to time, won’t you?” Tony tells Happy.
“I’ll watch them like a hawk.” Happy nods in agreement.
“You were planning on swinging me around late at night, were you?” You ask Peter as the two of you sit down on the couch.
“Yeah, I actually was. I hear Madrid has a pretty good nightlife.” Peter replies, turning on the tv.
You snuggle to his side and rest your head against his chest as he put his arms around you.
“I guess staying in isn’t half bad though.” You sign, holding onto his arms.
“Your hair smells like coconut, I like it.” Peter sniffs.
“I don’t know how I feel about you sniffing my hair.” You giggle.
You sit up to face him properly, your heads just a few inches away from one another’s. He presses his forehead against yours before you finally pull him in to kiss him. It starts off very slow, his hands move to the back of your head, slowly caressing your hair while yours rest against his chest. Peter finally having the courage to continue further, coaxes you to open your mouth slightly as he slips his tongue and caresses it with yours.
“You’re a pretty good kisser, Peter Parker.” You laugh lightly, scrunching his shirt to pull him in, your legs on top of his.
“Well I have to keep up, you know?” He chuckles, his lips moving to your jaw then back to your lips.
The two of you didn’t feel anyone come in but a mist of cold water interrupts the two of you from your makeout session.
“What the hell?” Y/n curses.
You open your eyes to see Happy standing right in front of you and Peter.
“Don’t make me spray you two again.” He threatens.
“Wha?-“ Before you could protest, Happy raises the spray again.
“Okay! We got it.” Y/n grumbles.
Happy walks away. You and Peter look at each other before bursting into laughter. You wipe the water off his face.
“You know, I never really got to ask you properly…” Peter starts.
“Ask me what?” You furrow your eyebrows at him.
“If you wanted to be my girlfriend.” He uses the sleeve of his sweater to wipe off the water on your cheek.
“Peter, I’d love to be your girlfriend.” You smile at him.
A wide grin immediately appears on his face before he leans in to kiss you again, this time not as intense.
“Are you done kissing my daughter, Parker?” Tony walks in.
Peter sits up and coughs slightly. You move your legs off of Peter’s lap and follow your dad’s gaze. Happy follows suit and sits beside you.
“You know what they say in catholic schools, leave space for the Holy Spirit.” Tony sits beside Peter.
“What are we watching?” Tony looks at the tv screen.
“Tropic Thunder.” Y/n replies.
Peter takes your hand in his as the four of you watch the movie in peace, bursting into laughter a couple of times. Tony, again, doesn’t miss the hand-holding action going on between Peter and his daughter. He could sulk and tell them off about it, telling them to stay away but he knows Y/n might rebel if he presses harder than he should. Happy looks at Tony and glances at the two teenagers’ hands. Tony just nods and rolls his eyes.
“Wow. It’s like we’re not even in the room.” You look at your dad.
“You two are acting weird. What? You’ve never seen teenagers hold hands?” You look at your dad and Happy.
“Sorry, sweetie. I’m just not used to it. I’ve seen Nico but it’s different because you’re my princess. If Parker wasn’t so awkward and afraid of me, I would’ve threatened him to get away from you.” Tony jokes.
Peter’s eyes grew large and before darting his gaze at Tony.
“Dad, you’re seriously ruining movie night for me. Both of you.” You give your dad and Happy the death stare.
“Alright alright. We’ll try to keep quiet. But you are grounded the second we arrive in New York.” He tells you with a serious look on his face.
“That was serious? Because I kissed my boyfriend in front of you?!” You raise your voice.
“Boyfriend?!” Tony and Happy stand up in front of you and Peter.
You and Peter look at each other, not really knowing what to do or how to reply in this situation.
“I’m afraid I’m gonna have to cut movie night off early, go to bed, sweetie. Parker, you stay.” You slowly remove your hand from Peter’s hold.
“Good luck.” You mouth at him before walking away.
As soon as Y/n is out of sight, Tony and Happy look at Peter with stern faces.
“So my daughter is now your girlfriend, is she?” Tony starts.
“It’s time we have the talk, Mr. Parker.” Tony raises his eyebrows at the teenager who is awkwardly shifting his eyes between Tony and Happy.
“Now, a normal father would just warn you off and tell you that he’d kill you if you hurt his daughter… But you know that I am Iron Man and that I can destroy you if you hurt Y/n, take away your suit, and ban you from the Avengers headquarters.” Tony threatens, sitting down beside Peter.
“I don’t want to hear her complain about you, see her cry over you, or listen to her rants about you being a terrible boyfriend. There’s hell to pay, Peter Parker.” He finishes.
Tony puts his hand out for Peter to take.
“Congrats on not crying. Take good care of her.” Peter shakes Tony’s hand, still, a bit shook.
“I’ll take good care of her, Mr. Stark.” Peter assures him.
“Good. Go to sleep.” He motions for Peter to leave the room.
Happy just looks at Tony in amusement.
“The next thing you know Eloise might introduce you to her crush from school.” Happy jokes.
“That one will be much harder, I don’t know to threaten people in French.” Tony retorts.
“I told you they’re good kids.” Happy states.
“They are…. They’re good kids, but they’re also crazy for each other.” Tony shakes his head.
“Better him than some jerk with a trust fund.” Happy laughs.
“Yeah, and at least this one’s a genius. I might have to recommend him to MIT.” Tony stands up as the two father figures of Y/n head out to sleep.
Y/n and Peter are at the Plaza Mayor eating churros at 10 in the morning. People are beginning to trickle in numbers, just as the first working day of the week comes to a start. You finish off your last churro and notice that Peter still has at least two.
“Are you not hungry? What’s wrong?” You ask.
“Nothing. I’m just not in the mood for churros, that’s all.” Peter smiles at you.
“Did Happy and my dad say something to you? Is that it?” You raise your eyebrows at him before glancing at the guy who has been looking at your table for the past few minutes now.
‘Of course, Happy’s here.’ You think to yourself.
“No, I’m just… well yeah… We’re okay, right?” Peter inquires.
“Do you not want us to be okay? Peter, you need to relax. My dad is not the scariest man in the world. You’ve met Bucky, right? That one is scary.” You joke.
“He is awfully quiet.” Peter nods in agreement.
He lets out a sigh of relief before putting his churro out for you to bite which you happily agree to.
“You’re gonna make me fat.” You protest jokingly.
“I don’t think one churro is going to make you fat.” Peter kisses you on the cheek.
He spots a trinket store in his line of sight. He notices you wearing the charm bracelet that he gave you for your birthday.
“Where are you going?” Peter stands up from his seat and tells you that he has to do something very important.
You finish eating the remainder of his churros before he could come back to finish them.
“Put your right arm out.” Peter takes his seat beside you with a cute smile on his face.
“Okay?” You put your arm out and notice Peter clip a Spanish fan charm to her charm bracelet.
“Peter.” You gasp in awe.
“This is adorable. Thank you.” You smile at him shyly.
“I love it. Thank you.” You kiss him by the cheek knowing that Happy is only a few tables away from the two of you.
“You’re welcome.” He smiles back at you, not knowing that Happy is present, and kisses you lightly.
“I’m gonna miss our little bubble here in Madrid.” You hold onto his hand.
“Me too. Compared to Queens, Madrid is quite the place.” Peter retorts.
“It is one of my favorite cities in the world. I’m glad dad brought you along with us.” Your thumbs caress his knuckles.
“There’s no place I’d rather be.” Peter replies kissing you again.
You happily kiss him back, your hands moving to his neck while his hands play with your hair.
“Happy’s here.” You pull away after at least 20 seconds.
“I know. I saw him trying to hide his face with the menu.” You and Peter look at your dad’s head of security.
You wave your hand at him and he waves back.
“It’s like we can’t catch a break.” You laugh.
“It’s better that he’s sitting at least 15 feet away from us. He won’t get to spray us this time.” Peter jokes.
“Well then, let’s give him a reason to get worked up again.” You giggle before leaning in to kiss your boyfriend again.
“There you are! I’ve been looking all over for you.” Tony sits on the chair opposite you and Peter with a stern look on his face.
“By the way, you two are not allowed to kiss for more than 5 seconds when I’m around. That’s an order.” Tony warns.
“Oh, but you and Pepper can?” You raise your eyebrows at your dad.
“That’s different. Pepper is my fiancée and we’re over 21.” Tony replies.
“Ugh. I hate it when you go full-Papa Bear mode on me.” You grumble.
“Sweetie, this is just the beginning.” Tony smirks at the two of you.

Valentine’s Day Music Newlsetter 2019!
Welcome to the 13th Music Newsletter! Short intro for the newbies - I love music. I love sharing music with other people. In college I started a "music newsletter" email with some playlists (aka mixtapes) I've made and some song/band recommendations. Why Valentine's Day? Because I think this day should be about love in many ways - including love for music!
That brings us to today. The first Valentine's Day mixtape I put together was actually a physical mix CD that I mailed to my home friends while I was away at college. That was in 2008 (11 years ago!). A lot has changed since then, but my love of music has not. While I feel sometimes too busy or too old or too out of touch to know what I'm even talking about, I hope you'll get some enjoyment out of this - as much as I've been enjoying listening to these songs and picking them for you!
*Click here to download Valentine's Day 2019 mixtape!
Click here to play Valentine's Day 2019 on Spotify!
*Note that the file downloads as a zip file, double clicking on it to open it up should give you the individual songs. Then move the songs to iTunes into a playlist!
1.) "Happy Unhappy" - The Beths New Zealand indie rockers The Beths debut album, Future Me Hates Me, is full of catchy, energetic sad-twinged songs. This song feels like it could have come out back in the 00s when we had to find new music by reading blogs and actually downloading MP3s - it feels closer to the Garden State soundtrack era of indie than the recent moody electronic vibe. It's a lot of fun! Sounds like Courtney Barnett by way of The Wombats, with a splash of Los Campesinos.
2.) “City Looks Pretty” - Courtney Barnett Courtney’s 2018 album “Tell Me How You Really Feel” is only her second studio album, but somehow it feels like she’s been around forever. The album features a “fuller” sound and more production, which may appear dulled next to 2015’s “Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit.” However, I feel excited by Courtney exploring a more mature sound and think it accurately reflects the albums depressive theme. “Sometimes I get mad / it’s not all that bad” is sung with a definite apathy compared to her shout-singing past record. As the bridge settles in, Courtney captures the depression symptom of lack of interest in things you used to enjoy. The city looks pretty when you’ve been stuck inside isolated for two weeks. 3.) “Screwed” - Janelle Monáe feat. Zoë Kravitz Janelle’s 2018 album “Dirty Computer” is an anthology of songs (and truly, poetry) that tell of reckoning with being a queer woman of color in an oppressive, violent society. It’s an incredibly personal album with her fans in mind - “I want young girls, young boys, nonbinary, gay, straight, queer people who are having a hard time dealing with their sexuality, dealing with feeling ostracized or bullied for just being their unique selves, to know that I see you. This album is for you. Be proud.” (Rolling Stone, 2018). My favorite part of this song is “See, everything is sex / except sex / which is power / you know power is just sex / now ask yourself who’s screwing you.”
4.) "BAGDAD - Cap.7: Liturgia" - Rosalía 25-year-old Rosalía Vila Tobella from Catalonia has an excellent 2018 album El Mal Querer. The album combines traditional flamenco with modern R&B. The album is a story of love and heartbreak over the course of 11 chapters/songs. This particular one might sound familiar due to the sampling of Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River."
5.) "Gun" - St. Lucia St. Lucia's first release off of their 2018 album Hyperion caught my attention with its connection to a more traditional rock sound and the heavy-hitting, one-word title. The production and sound almost reminds me of Oasis or U2. Turns out that the album is indeed produced by someone who worked on records with PJ Harvey, Depeche Mode, and U2. In interviews, Jean-Philip Grobler talks about how this song is generally about both gun control and power. "You said you wanted to feel a gun in your hands" in Verse 1 transforms to "You said you wanted to feel the blood in your hands" in Verse 2, highlighting the fact that guns are designed to kill.
6.) “Apathy” - Frankie Cosmos With a catchy bass line, gorgeous lyrics, and endearing vocals, this song and entire album are not to be missed. As you may notice on this year’s playlist, this year I was super into what I would describe as punk-influenced, low-fi indie female vocalists. Pretentious enough for you? Haha. I just mean that there are a ton of young women blowing up in the indie music scene with a huge crossover in sound. As demonstrated in “Apathy,” many of these songs are short, lack a traditional pop music format, use low-fi production, and have a storytelling aspect of almost speak-singing. These elements are all found in traditional punk music, so it’s interesting and exciting to see these artists shaking things up and challenging the punk genre. Frankie Cosmos has a long history of creating music, under various projects using Bandcamp as a teenager. Her 2018 album “Vessel” is nothing short of delightful and another one of my favorites of the year. 7.) “Your Dog” - Soccer Mommy Soccer Mommy is Sophie Allison, singer-songwriter based out of Nashville. She opened for Paramore on their recent tour and she has launched into the indie music scene with a lot of attention in the past couple years. I love how her voice clearly carries so much anger as she sings about an emotionally abusive relationship. Her lyrics describe the agony of small, sweet gestures pushing her back to her ex, despite her wanting desperately to end it. Using the metaphor of being a loyal, sub-servient dog, she describes the way her SO treats her like she’s his property. Because the song lacks a traditional “pop” format (verse 1 / chorus / verse 2 / chorus / bridge / chorus), there is a sense of the story ending unresolved. Fortunately, she has an excellent album (one of my favorites) from 2018 called “Clean” where you can learn more of her story. 8.) “Pristine” by Snail Mail A stunning debut from 19-year-old Lindsey Jordan, “Lush” is a 2018 release not to miss. “Pristine” perfectly encapsulates teenage life and love - “it just feels like the same party every weekend. Doesn’t it?” There is such a sense of genuine hormonal angst that she is almost joyfully celebrating. Her album reads more like a diary - and how lucky she is to have these future memories and be able to approach them with such wisdom.
9.) "Uncomfortably Numb" - American Football feat. Hayley Williams Paying homage to Pink Floyd, legendary emo band American Football joins with Paramore's lead singer Hayley Williams for a devastating track about losing emotional sensation. "I blame my father in my youth / Now as a father, I blame the booze." I couldn't find too much information on the exact inspiration behind the track, but it's the second track released off their upcoming album out March 22nd. Hayley is usually front and center as a singer, and it's interested to hear her take more of a backing role, as well as explore a bit of a lower vocal range than she usually does.
10.) “Geyser” - Mitski Mitski absolutely killed it last year with “Be The Cowboy,” which was consistently rated not only in the top 5 best albums, not only top 3, but making MULTIPLE end of year lists as the number one album of 2018. It’s easy to see why, given the incredible breadth of music she wrote for her album. I see Mitski's influence reflected in the rise of fame in other punk-inspired female vocalists in the indie scene, building off her ability to capture the attention of a wide audience. Which is also very interesting because she incorporated elements of many other genres on this album (spot any disco on “Nobody”?) While it was difficult to pick one song for my playlist, “Geyser” stands out to me as not only an excellent album opener, but a fascinating look into Mitski’s own relationship with the art she creates. In an interview, she explains that this song is about her feeling like she has to create music because she would never be satisfied in life without it, but feeling sometimes stifled, stuck, and resentful when she puts music above basic needs such as her health and self-care. She needs her art to survive but it simultaneously kills her.
11.) “Me & My Dog” - boygenius It’s impossible to pick just one song of this album. Boygenius is the supergroup of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker - who each could also have one of their incredible solo songs on my playlist. Partially because they enjoyed each other’s creative energies and partially as a response to constantly being compared to each other as “women in indie,” the trio came together to create an EP of emo-influenced, folk-inspired gorgeous tracks about grief, loneliness, identity, and heartbreak. This particular song features Phoebe Bridgers in the verses and is a beautiful representation of the embarrassing and frustrating feeling of being in love with an ex. Please check out the individual work of these artists too!
12.) "bless ur heart" - serpentwithfeet Serpentwithfeet, aka Josiah Wise, has a gorgeous, intimate voice throughout his 2018 debut album, soil. This song starts off with a question of how his art will be received by the world. The rest of the song is a tender message of gratitude to his first love. It seems like Josiah questioned the choice to speak about his experiences with his ex in such a public fashion - with complexities of privacy, being open about sexuality, and possible painful memories on the table. Josiah's writing is very much like poetry, and his raw, unfiltered, un-autotuned vocals match the beauty of his words.
13.) "Bury A Friend" - Billie Eilish 17-year-old Billie Eilish is set to release her debut album, When We Sleep, Where Do We Go? next month. This song matches her goth aesthetic with a creepy story from the perspective of the monster under the bed. We learn that the monster is part of Billie herself, who is struggling with her own demons. 14.) "Loading Zones" - Kurt Vile A gorgeous guitar track, Kurt Vile paints a picture of his hometown Philadelphia and feeling on top of the world exploring his city's streets. He included a hilarious marketing strategy of sending fake parking tickets to fans in the mail to promote the song. Kurt Vile talks about the metaphor of "I park for free," which is how he sometimes lives his life - breaking the dumb rules because it's his life, his streets, his town. 15.) "Dylan Thomas" - Better Oblivion Community Center Is it possible to already be nostalgic for the late 2000's? Conor Oberst and Phoebe Bridgers released this surprise collaboration last month and this is the standout track for me. Conor Oberst's incredibly recognizable voice is hard to match in terms of strength, timbre, and uniqueness. While Bridgers is young enough to be from a different generation than him (she also grew up listening to Oberst's music), he saw something in her that resonated with him. I love how they sing in unison on this track (and much of the album) and think their voices sound really good together.
16.) "Butterflies" - Kacey Musgraves Kacey Musgraves is bringing a breath of fresh air to country. After self-releasing three albums, she tried her hand at reality TV through Nashville Star over a decade ago. Golden Hour is her fourth album using a record label, and she just won Album of the Year at the Grammys! Her voice is beautiful and has an earnest, authentic approach in joining elements of country pop.
17.) “Prior Things” - Hop Along “Bark Your Head Off, Dog” is Hop Along’s third album, released in 2018. Singer/songwriter Frances Quinlan has the ability to transform the themes of her songs. Layered with a multitude of different sounds and instruments, it could easily sound scattered and busy, but instead feels like we are huddled around a campfire with an enthusiastic, stream-of-consciousnesses storyteller. “Prior Thing” is the last song on the album and crosses time, space, and memories with the start of a hallucinogenic drug trip. She has the ability to take a phrase and transform the expected - pausing or elongating notes at unexpected places. This method keeps you invested in figuring out what the song is really about or what the conclusion is. 18.) "Kids" - Pup Emo/pop punkers Pup have a new album Morbid Stuff coming out on April 5th. Their songs are made for live shows - shouting/singing alternates, sing-a-long catchy lyrics reminiscent of the Hold Steady, and unison whole-band lines. Pup frontman Stefan Babcock said this song is about finding someone who agrees with your view of the world being a fucked up place, and enjoying small moments of solace in spending time with them.

52. Is there anyone you’ve given up on? Why? I’ve given up on a lot of people. I’ve given up on some family this year and I’ve given up on the person I believed to be the love of my life because sometimes people hurt you and you think that’s okay because you love them and don’t want to hurt them. You’re basically sacrificing yourself for others and that’s not okay for you.
53. Is there someone mad because you’re dating/talking to the person you are? No, no one cares about what I do haha
54. Is there someone you will never forget? Always
55. Share a relationship story. This one time my ex partner drove me home on the fourth of July and no one else had been driving on the highway at that time. We were holding hands and listening to Celine Dion and I kept pointing out all the fireworks I could see from the highway with this childlike amazement. It was a movie moment and I have enough of those to fill a book. It was the beginning of a wild adventure, one that I’m sure I could’ve continued on for a very long time.
56. State 8 facts about your body 1) I have scars on my shoulders from a severe sunburn. 2) I have a freckle on my left wrist (heard from twitter that’s really gay) 3) I have a small triangular scar on my right hand from burning myself on the oven. 4) My shoulders are covered in freckles. 5) My eyes are “green with gold specks” 6) I’m somewhere around 5′7 or 5′8 7) My hair is naturally a dark blonde, but I’ve dyed it black and or brown for the past four years. 8) I had my hair chemically straightened when I was twelve. I did it twice, it was a long and painful process. I did it due to bullying and have since grown to learn how to deal with my wavy hair.
57. Things you want to say to an ex Yikes baby, you missed out on a lifetime of love and support. Big yikes.
58. What are five ways to win your heart? 1) Trust. Being able to trust you and know you aren’t going to just up and walk away one day. Knowing I can count on you, that we will both be here and amp each other up or celebrate each other’s accomplishments. 2) Attentive. Listening to everything you have to say and you listening to what I have to say. 3) Learning and growing together. Someone who over time wants to grow with me, not against me or before me or worrying about my life or what my next move is. Let me grow and let yourself grow and we will grow beautifully together. 4) Loyalty. Betrayal sucks. 5) This sounds really dumb but common interests are super important. I hope the next person I date likes the same stuff I do. That’s always worked out for me.
59. What do you look like? (Post a picture!)
60. What is the biggest age difference between you and any of your partners? I think two years. In my last relationship we were about 16 months apart in age. So I guess not quite two. But usually it’s two years older or two years younger.
61. What is the first thing you notice in someone? Eyes and hair.
62. What is the sexiest thing someone could ever do for/to you? Sexiest? I’m answering these out of order but see the foreplay question.
63. What is your definition of “having sex”? Doing something that is intimate for you, the other person, or both of you together. It can be defined in so many ways.
64. What is your definition of cheating? It isn’t just physical, cheating can be emotional and I think a lot of people let that slide. If you’re engaging with another person in a romantic or sexual sense emotionally or physically, that is cheating.
65. What is your favourite foreplay routine? Haha okay neck kissing. Neck kissing makes me weak. Certain places make me weak. Stomach, thighs, neck - yep. And for me on the other end, I like touching arms and shoulders and hands.
66. What is your favourite roleplay? I have never done that. Never did that with another person in that way. Surprisingly.
67. What is your idea of the perfect date? If you like the person enough literally any scenario will be a perfect date.
68. What is your sexual orientation? My sexuality is lesbian and demisexual. And explained (for me) that means I’m gay and I won’t do anything intimate until I know the person’s soul and love them. (attraction develops with emotional bond for me)
69. What turns you off? Dirt under fingernails, overconfidence, instability toward others, impatience, mostly traits.
70. What turns you on? Trust, loyalty, kindness, tattoos, sensitivity to feelings.
71. What was your kinkiest wet dream? No kinky wet dreams here.
72. What words do you like to hear during sex? “I love you” preferably lol always need that #reassurance
73. What’s something sweet you’d like someone to do for you? I’m extremely easy to impress. Like a playlist is the best way.
74. What’s the most superficial characteristic you look for? None.
75. What’s the sweetest thing anyone’s ever done for you? Played me songs that reminded them of me or performed songs for me in the car that they meant for me. That used to be a favorite of mine.
76. What’s the sweetest thing you’ve ever done for someone? I used to write my ex notes and stick them to their fridge or in their bag to read when I left.
77. What’s your opinion on age differences in relationships? When the younger person is older it feels more idk acceptable to me. Like a teenager and an adult, that’s not a consensual adult relationship I don’t approve of, of course. But I love older women (all women tbh) and could see it happening once I’m a bit older.
78. What’s your dirtiest secret? It’s not really a secret but I love watching people smoke because it’s the hottest thing ever, even though I know it’s terrible.
79. When was the last time you felt jealous? Why? Some family members harassed me on Christmas Eve and it made me jealous that they always seem to get away with questionable behavior. (More agitated than jealous)
80. When was the last time you told someone you loved them? My friend on her birthday.
81. Who are five people you find attractive? Sarah Paulson, Hannah Hart, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Stewart, and Courteney Cox.
82. Who is the last person you hugged? I have no idea.
83. Who was your first kiss with? My first boyfriend.
84. Why did your last relationship fail? The person I dated stopped loving me.
85. Would you ever date someone off of the Internet? Yes
#long post#there's some not so suitable text in this but it is what it is#don't look if you don't want to see that#personal tag.#asks#thank you very much for asking this was a lot emotionally i didn't realize#alurous

Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger celebrated their first Valentine’s Day as a married couple a little early.
The actor, 40, and his wife of almost a year made some time to celebrate early due to his work commitments, he told Extra on Thursday.
“My favorite night is a night in,” he said. “We actually celebrated Valentine’s Day last weekend ’cause I knew that this weekend I would be doing junket stuff for Onward.”
Pratt’s upcoming animated film, Onward, follows two teenage elf brothers who go on an adventure to spend one last day with their father, who died when they were too young to remember him. The film also includes his Avengers costar Tom Holland.
The actor jokingly told Extra he knew what he didn’t give Schwarzenegger, 30, for the holiday.
“If I gave her another animal for Valentine’s Day, I think she would be pretty upset,” he said. “I am going a different route. She recently gave me two kunekune pigs. They’re pets. They’re amazing.”
Pratt and Schwarzenegger tied the knot in June 2019, a year after they were first spotted together on a Father’s Day picnic. Pratt celebrated their nuptials with a sweet picture on the two during the wedding the next day.
“Yesterday was the best day of our lives! We became husband and wife in front of God, our families and those we love. It was intimate, moving and emotional. We feel so blessed to begin this new chapter of our lives. We are so thankful to our families and our friends who stood with us and grateful to Mr. Giorgio Armani who created a once in a lifetime dress for Katherine to wear and for me, the perfect suit. This morning we feel nothing but blessed,” he wrote.

The duo is hoping to add more than just pets to their family with sources telling PEOPLE last year that Pratt, and Schwarzenegger were excited to “expand their family as soon as possible” following their wedding.

HPV: What You Should Know and How to Prevent HPV Infection
According to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 14 million people including teens become infected each year with human papillomavirus. HPV is so common that nearly all sexually active men and women get it at some point in their lives.
HPV is a different virus than HIV and HSV (herpes). There are many different types of HPV. Some types can cause health problems including genital warts and cancers. But there are vaccines that can stop these health problems from happening.

What EVERYONE Needs to Know About HPV (Human Papillomavirus) and Vaccination
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is widely known as the virus that causes cervical cancer in women, but many people don’t realize it also leads to other life-threatening cancers that affect both men and women. For instance, it causes most oropharyngeal (throat) cancers, which are far more common in men and are expected to surpass the number of cervical cancers by the year 2020.
In the United States, about 20,600 females and 12,600 males are diagnosed with HPV-associated cancers each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Fortunately, there is a vaccine that, when received early enough, can prevent most of these cancers.
What Is Human Papillomavirus (HPV)?
HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection, affecting nearly all sexually active men and women at some point in their lives. There are many different subtypes of HPV. Some are low-risk, or benign (non-cancerous), though they can cause genital warts. Several others are high-risk, or malignant, having the potential to cause cancer.

HPV infections usually cause no symptoms or health problems, and most people clear the virus naturally through their own immune systems. Unfortunately, about seven percent of people with HPV do not, resulting in chronic infection.
How Is it Transmitted?
HPV is usually transmitted during sexual activity through contact between one moist mucosal surface—whether vaginal, anal, or oral—and another. It can also be spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact and, less likely, bodily secretions, such as through saliva when kissing.
What Kinds of Cancer Does HPV Cause?
Having a chronic infection with or repeated exposure to HPV in the cervix, genitals, anus, tonsil, or base of the tongue can predispose people to cancers in those areas later in life. High-risk HPV causes almost all cervical and anal cancers; a majority of tonsil and tongue-base (oropharyngeal) cancers; and a significant share of rare genital cancers, such as vaginal and penile cancers.
The HPV Vaccine
The HPV vaccine was initially created for preteen girls to prevent cervical cancer when they are older, but is now recommended for boys, as well, because the transmission process is a two-way street, and males can get HPV-related cancers, too. Since 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved three vaccines—Gardasil, Gardasil 9, and Cervarix—to prevent infection with the high-risk HPV subtypes that cause the majority of cancers.
Who should get vaccinated? The vaccine is proven effective only if given before acquiring an HPV infection, which most people do shortly after becoming sexually active. That’s why the CDC recommends routine vaccination for all preteen girls and boys at age 11 or 12, before they have engaged in any sexual activity and been exposed to HPV; however, vaccination may begin as early as nine years old.
For teenagers and young adults who have not previously been vaccinated, the CDC recommends vaccination up to age 21 for men, in general; and up to age 26 for women, men who have sex with men, and immunocompromised individuals, such as those with HIV.
The vaccine is not recommended for anyone older than 26 because by that age, those still sexually active have likely already been exposed to most high-risk HPV subtypes. The vaccine has been insufficiently studied in pregnant women, so they shouldn’t get vaccinated, either.
Is it effective? The HPV vaccine is highly effective at preventing infection with the most common cancer-causing HPV subtypes, but only when given prior to HPV exposure—in other words, before engaging in any sexual activity for the first time.
Is it safe? The HPV vaccine is very safe. It has been tested in tens of thousands of people, and many studies, including an analysis of more than 600,000 doses administered, show it is has a very low side-effect profile.
How much does it cost? The retail price is generally $130 to $140 per dose, but the actual cost may vary depending on your health care provider or insurance company. Most private insurers and Medicaid cover the cost of HPV vaccination in accordance with the CDC recommendations.
In most cases, HPV goes away on its own and does not cause any health problems. However, in case that HPV does not go away, it can bring a serious health issue like genital warts and cancer. Whether symptoms occur or not can depend on the type of HPV virus involved in the infection. Here's what you need to know about HPV Symptoms.
First Seen on: (http://www.news-medical.net/health/What-is-HPV.aspx)
Symptoms
There are more than 40 types of the virus that cause infections in the genital area. People do not always realise they have been infected with the virus as it does not always cause symptoms. Visible ways by which it is expressed are as genital warts which develop after sexual contact. When it is transmitted through skin to skin interaction in genital areas of the body, the virus is highly infectious.
Prevalence
A person only needs to have sexual contact with one person infected with the virus to become infected, although reducing the number of sexual partners can reduce the risk of this happening.
In the US, this virus is the most common sexually transmitted infection. Every year about 14 million people are newly infected
In the UK, it is the second most common sexually transmitted infection.
About 79 million Americans are infected with HPV
Effect of HPV on the body
HPV can result in changes in the cells and lead to abnormal tissue growth. Some forms of the virus can lead to cervical cancer in women after genital infection. The types of HPV that cause warts usually have a quick transition through the body whereas the types that cause cancer can stay in the body for lengthy periods. These will create pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions in the affected area.
Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer affecting women across the world. In 2012 alone, there were about 266,000 deaths and 528,000 new cases of cervical cancer.
Some countries routinely screen women for signs of the disease. In the UK, women aged between 25 and 64 years are invited for screening. Cervical cancer affects the less developed countries disproportionately with 85% of the burden of the disease resting with them. Other cancers caused by HPV include cancers of the vulva, vagina, penis, anus, head, and neck.
Here are some suggestions on how we can prevent HPV.

Prevention

Using protection can lower the risk of transmission during sex. Protection, such as condoms and dams, should be used during any skin-to-skin sexual contact, though it isn't fool-proof.
The HPV vaccine is the best way to prevent HPV. The CDC recommends that preteen boys and girls receive the HPV vaccine at age 11 or 12 so they are protected before the potential of being exposed to the virus. Also, when the vaccine is given to preteens, the vaccine produces a more robust immune response.
The HPV vaccine can be administered to women through age 26, and to men through age 21. The CDC recommends, though, that gay men and men with compromised immune systems (including HIV) get the HPV vaccine up to 26.
HPV vaccines are also the favored for the prevention of cervical cancer. A poll of 1,952 U.S. doctors by SERMO, a social media network for doctors, found that 55 percent polled favored state mandates for HPV vaccination. In addition, 92 percent of doctors confirmed that they would vaccinate their own children, despite recent controversy over the safety of the HPV vaccine.
Side effects of the vaccine, when they do occur, are typically very mild. They include pain, redness, or swelling in the arm where the shot was given, fever, headache, feeling tired or muscle or joint pain, said Genden.
"With all vaccines, it hurts to get a shot in the arm, but that passes," said Pahud. "Teens also may faint after vaccination, but not due to the HPV vaccine itself, but the injection procedure. These findings are similar to the safety reviews of the other two recommended teen-vaccines, meningococcal vaccines and tetanus booster vaccines."
You may also consider abstinence from Sexual activity including oral, anal, and vaginal sex to reduce the infections if you already are suffering from HPV. To get yourself protected from sexual diseases, always consider to make use of protections like condoms and talk to your partners if you feel like something is wrong or consult and get check by a professional specialist.

Khalid’s American Teen: A Teenage Anthem
1. American Teen
2. Young Dumb & Broke
3. Location
4. Another Sad Love Song

8. Let’s Go
9. Hopeless

12. Therapy
13. Keep Me
14. Shot Down
15. Angels
These fifteen songs address different themes and ideas that are ubiquitous to all teenagers – heartbreak, insecurity (both emotional and financial), and hope, to name a few – so eloquently that I believe the album beautifully encapsulates what it means to be an American teenager. In this post, I plan to elucidate this idea by analyzing several songs in Khalid’s debut album and briefly comparing his “American Teen” with the teenage culture that rock ‘n’ roll addressed in the 1950s.
American Teen
My youth is the foundation of me
Living life as an American Teen
youtube
This initial song on the album introduces listeners to a broader theme that is repeatedly addressed throughout American Teen: a simultaneous, paradoxical fear about life after high school and desire to leave a small, restrictive hometown behind. These feelings are inherent whenever discussing the future, since it is so uncertain – anything can happen in the future, both good and bad. Khalid describes this feeling when he says:
But I’ve been waiting all year
To get the hell up out of here
And throw away my fears
Right now, Khalid is afraid of what his future holds. However, once he graduates high school and can make music without any reservations, he will effectively be able to “throw away his fears” because he will have achieved his dream of being a popular musician. Teenagers all across America share a similar sentiment: they feel like they are currently bogged down and that their hometown is preventing them from reaching greater frontiers.
Another, more subtle point that Khalid makes in this song is the potential for technology to corrupt our youth1. In the final thirty seconds of this song, Khalid and a few other teens (Khalid’s friends from high school) sing the chorus with only the accompaniment of an acoustic guitar. This immediately catches the listener’s attention because it greatly contrasts the rest of the song, which is filled with smooth electronic beats. I believe this contrast speaks to the need for balance with respect to technology in teenagers’ lives. While it provides numerous benefits to teenagers, technology also reduces genuine social interaction and promotes a robotic, impersonal existence. While Khalid talks about the importance of technology in American youth more directly in other songs (namely, “Saved” and “Location”), he introduces that theme here.
Another theme that Khalid touches on (especially in the music video) is that teenagers have such a unique lifestyle and are loving every second of it. Throughout this video, there are glimpses and hints at some of the issues that teenagers face -- technology and romance, experimenting with drugs/alcohol, finding a tight-knit friend group. However, this music video is mainly characterized by its jovial atmosphere; everyone in the video is having a blast. Khalid furthers this idea in “Young Dumb & Broke”: teenagers live according to their own rules and they don’t care if you’re upset about it.
American Teen presents many ideas that resonate very intimately with the American youth, which is the main reason that this song is so popular. Timothy Taylor talks about this same issue in Chapter 6 of his novel, The Sounds of Capitalism: "Music--like visual communications-- responds to the needs and pressures of our society. It is a litmus paper by which we can gauge what is happening to all of of us"5. Khalid’s introductory song reflects the current feelings among the American youth in ways that are especially relatable and engaging. The best part about it? It’s only the beginning of this spectacular album.
Young Dumb & Broke
Yeah we’re just young, dumb, and broke
But we still got love to give
As the title of this song suggests, Khalid talks about the recklessness of American teenagers and how unproven they are. The chorus of this song exemplifies this idea, as he repeatedly mentions that “we’re young dumb broke high school kids”. He also subtly hints at the notion that teenagers never listen to others4, through repeating the phrase “Yadadadada”, which is analogous to the noise that the teacher makes in “Charlie Brown”:
youtube
Much like how Peppermint Patty falls asleep while her teacher is talking, American teenagers don’t pay too much attention to adults because they are so engrossed in doing their own thing. While one can construe this song as poking fun at negative attributes of American teenagers, I believe that Khalid is highlighting all the good that young people can do in the world. He is saying that they have unlimited potential. They need to focus on themselves in order to become the best person they can be; as a result, they don’t have time to listen to adults. I saw some very interesting parallels between this song and Chuck Berry’s hit “Johnny B. Goode”:
youtube
Berry depicts a young, illiterate country boy who is adept at playing at the guitar. Even though he may not be the most intelligent (and most likely comes from an impoverished background), the child has musical potential:
A country boy named Johnny B. Goode
Who never ever learned to read or write so well
But he could play the guitar just like ringing a bell
These lyrics communicate the same idea as Khalid’s lyrics “Yeah we’re just young dumb & broke / but we still got love to give”. Even though the youth may not be accomplished individuals, they are still valuable and have the capability to one day be great.
In addition to addressing this idea of the youth’s potential, both of these songs talk about young people’s attitudes about their current situation in life – teenagers may not be the most financially stable individuals, but they don’t care. They are enjoying the present and not worrying themselves about what the future may bring3. Khalid and Berry convey this message through two distinct avenues. Khalid uses his lyrics,
Run into sin, do it all in the name of fun
I’m so high at the moment
I’m so caught up in this
while Berry uses an up-tempo beat and instrumentals that make the listener want to get up and start dancing. Both songs depict the teenager as a carefree person who is currently living it up, and trying his best to live in the moment. Khalid gets a lot of inspiration from rock ‘n’ roll artists like Berry and other R&B artists, so it is interesting to see how Khalid transforms the same ideas from prior musicians in ways that are palatable to the current American youth.
In this song specifically, Khalid captures the tenuous nature of being a teenager, and how these teenagers overcome the uncertainty in their lives about what they will become.
Winter
My favorite part of this song is the contrasting emotions that it elicits from its listeners. If you focus on the beat and instrumentals, you will want to drive down a highway on a sunny day with your windows down, as this song blasts in the background. If you focus on the lyrics instead, you will be brought to tears. I believe this song is Khalid’s best attempt at expressing something that can never be effectively portrayed: a broken heart. As people grow from young children into teenagers, they will explore relationships with other teenagers and eventually, find love (hopefully). In this song, Khalid describes one of his failed relationships – his girlfriend loved him during their good times but did not stay by his side when their relationship became turbulent. Khalid utilizes an extended metaphor of winter to describe his feelings, which I believe is absolutely incredible. During break-ups, people’s sadness may make them feel cold, empty, and alone. Winter can elicit those same feelings. The following lyrics exemplify this idea:
I fell in love in the morning
But when the day gets cold
I’m back to life in my lonely city of El Paso
Here Khalid compares the duration of his relationship to a typical day. In “the morning”, or when the relationship was new and fresh, Khalid felt loved. As the day wears on, it typically gets colder, especially once the sun sets. Therefore, one can interpret the line “But when the day gets cold” as Khalid’s way of saying that as his relationship progressed, he felt more alienated and detached from his lover. The double meaning of the word “cold” – meaning the end of the day and a cold relationship – conveys this idea. One can also interpret that same lyric as “when times get tough, I am alone”: since most people view cold days as less pleasant than warm ones, it can reasonably be assumed that Khalid also means “cold” in the sense that times became tough. And when that happened, his partner was no longer there by his side. There are several other examples of this lyrical wizardry throughout this song, and they all contribute to the idea that teenagers get broken hearts, and it sucks. In an interview with NPR, Khalid mentions that this song tries to disprove the idea that teenagers don’t understand what it means to have your heart broken: “But at the same time, a 25-year-old can go through the same form of heartbreak as a 35-year-old, as a 15-year-old. You know? Love crosses all boundaries”6.
Location and Saved
Both of these songs also address the issue of heartbreak, but also bring to light another prevalent concern of the American youth: technology, especially its role in love. In “Location”, Khalid brings up both the benefits and detriments of phones in the context of a relationship. He starts the song by saying
Send me your location
Let’s just focus on communication
This highlights how technology can be useful – it is easier than ever to bring two people together. People can now focus on getting to know each other, and ultimately fall in love, rather than figuring out logistics of when and how to meet. However, this also comes with some pitfalls; primarily, technology also makes it easier than ever to be impersonal toward your loved ones, as Khalid describes:
I don’t want to fall in love off of subtweets
So let’s get personal
Technology provides a shield between two people when they are beginning a relationship; people no longer have to be directly talking to each other to fall in love. This also poses a potential problem, mainly because someone’s online persona can be completely different from their personality in real life. In extreme cases, the person may not even exist in real life (i.e. catfishing). Another problem with technology the above lyric insinuates is that it is very confusing to determine one’s feelings while staring at a screen. People can misinterpret text to mean different things, and can develop misguided feelings as a result. This can lead to very awkward scenarios in real life if someone were to act on these feelings. Take home point here: technology is great, but not a replacement for sitting down face-to-face with somebody.
While “Location” mainly deals with how technology influences budding relationships, “Saved” discusses its role in break ups. Throughout the song, Khalid uses the phone as a tool to express certain feelings, like wanting to tell his ex that he is no longer in love with her. In both cases, Khalid acknowledges that technology has a pervasive effect on how teenagers love each other. He confirms this idea in an interview with Rolling Stone: “Falling in love in high school and falling out of love – it’s very digital. I’ve hard breakups where they’ve called me to tell me we were done, and I’ve gotten a lot of text messages from an old girlfriend letting me know how she felt about me after we had ended everything”2.
These 5 songs offer only a snippet of the extraordinary insights into the teenage experience that Khalid presents. By tailoring his audience to the younger generation, Khalid created an instant hit – listeners can relate extremely well to the ideas that Khalid evokes throughout this album, and that is the main reason the album is so popular. While simultaneously creating music for American teenagers, Khalid expresses ideas, such as love and youthful exuberance, that have been the subjects of popular music for a long time. Because of that, you can make interesting comparisons between Khalid’s contemporary hits and older classics. At the end of the day, Khalid’s American Teen is a teenage anthem – it allowed the young star to become a voice for teenagers across the entire country.
