In which she only knew he was  her brother when he recognized an old ring and she didn’t truly recognize him until weeks later.

    The urgent steps of the short haired woman quickly caught the attention of her wife, leather jacket flying up behind her slightly as she walks. The other woman’s eyes follow her, eyes lifting from the speech she was editing. “Georgie?” She jumps up from her seat, “What’s wrong?” “Talkers at the welcome center. They’re hungry and the center doesn’t have any bizcuits.” The dark haired woman blows a kiss to her wife as she speeds out of the building. Sliding the pencil and speech into her pocket (Y/N) stands up from the table, heading for the double doors that her wife ran out of moments before. A new set of arrivals wasn’t something new for Altura, this happens pretty often, and (Y/N) has desperate hope every single time one does. 

       Head of Pacifica security heads over to the quarantine station of the bigger outpost. She knew it was a slim chance, yet every time there was new arrivals she had the need to check for the boy. Twisting the ring on her right finger, the woman waited patiently for the truckload to return her wife and bring in a new shipment of dirty, tired faces. Her nervous eyes search the area around her, a few welcome committee members give her a gentle smile, others shaking their head in exhaustion. Eight years of apocalypse couldn’t shake her belief that her family is out there. Anyone other than Dante and Georgia would call her hopeless for still believing but (Y/N)’s intuition had never failed them. If her gut told her they were still out there, the two would believe her until the end. 

       Nervous summersaults enter the girl’s stomach as a vehicle comes into her sight line. “Don’t get your hopes up,” the woman whispers to herself, toying with the piece of metal on her finger. A kind voice speaks to a doctor, telling him that he and his friends had to go through quarantine before gaining citizenship. (Y/N)’s eyes search the group, one face catching her eye. He was too far for her to tell for sure, but the woman swore she recognized him. Georgia leaves the group, making her way to the woman. “One day playing with your ring like that is going to make it get stuck,” she chuckles, kissing the worried woman on her forehead. Shaking her head, (Y/N) leans into her lover’s side, “I’m just  nervous.” Rubbing a hand up the soft material of her wife’s sweater Georgia frowns, “Did the feeling go away?” “No, no, I’m still sure someone is out there,” she bites her lip, “I just, feel like I know that guy, the dark haired one you just brought in. I can’t place him though like it’s been years since I passed him in a crowd or something.” 

       “After he gets through quarantine, you and I can go talk to him together okay?” “That would be great,” she pulls the speech out of her pocket, handing it and the pencil to the woman on her side, “You need an opener, a joke or something to get people’s attention.” “You are an angel,” George laughs, pressing another kiss to her forehead.  “I try,” she teases, smiling over at the woman. “His name is Ten Thousand, if that helps.” “That’s a number, not a name. What was he before the apocalypse? A government experiment?” 

      (Y/N) waiting patiently for the quarantine process to end on the new arrivals, it felt like someone had their eyes on her the whole time. The feeling made her stomach feel like it was churning, the nerves killing her. George’s hand on her back lead her over to the group. She learned that the doctor Georgia was speaking to wasn’t a doctor but more of a therapist turned drug dealer from a small conversation. The short woman with him, Sargent Muller was a sweet girl, a fellow marine from before the world fell apart. The whole time she spoke to them, she twirled the ring, cutting eyes at the boy. He was glaring at her hands watching the metal and gems spin. 

        “Where the hell did you get that,” it was the first thing he said  and it felt as if he spit it at her. “Pardon?” The girl tucked herself into her wife’s side, the voice made him even more familiar but the anger in his tone was something she didn’t expect. “Where did you get that ring? You steal it off a corpse or something?” His face was full of disgust as he snatched her hand up. The stranger stared at the silver flower, eying the center gems. 4, his birthstone, his ma’s. his pa’s, and (Y/N)’s. “It was a gift from my mother, thank you,” She scoffs, yanking her hand back. For the first time she took a good look at his face. She knew those eyes anywhere, they were her mother’s, the scar in his eyebrow from where he got hit by a hunter’s knife as it slipped from her hand. And suddenly, she didn’t have to trust the feeling anymore, her brother was most definitely alive. George moves to step between the two, not liking the way the stranger roughly snapped her wife’s hand up. She’s shocked to feel the other woman shove her to the side, hugging the man suddenly, “Tomcat!” The male’s body jolts at the impact, pushing her off slightly, “(Y/N)?” She slumps her shoulders, affected by the rejected hug from her once clingy brother, “Yeah, it’s good to see you.”

     (Y/n)’s back is pressed against the side of the building, trying to ignore everything happening in the building. She feels guilt already building  in her stomach for being out in the grass while the woman she loves gives a speech she promised to be there for,  but being in there feels impossible. Hot tears burn her eyes as she stares into the distance, eyes unfocused. “Hey,” the voice catches her attention, her eyes refocusing on the frame that appeared before her, “You missed an amazing speech you know.” “Yeah, she’s good at them, you should hear her when she has to give a speech on the spot,” her voice is slightly hoarse as she looks up at him. “So uh,” he waves to the ground beside her, “Mind if I join you?” “Go ahead, 10k,” she lets out a half-assed chuckle. 

    Hearing his chosen name in her voice stung like venom as he sits down beside her. “You know, in fourteen years of living with you, I don’t think I can ever remember you crying, (Y/n/n).” She sniffles, smiling at the old nickname, “Well, you were the clingy family softy back then and I was the heartless one, remember?” “You were never heartless.” “Fourteen year old you felt different. You know the last thing I said to you was ‘the world won’t end while I’m gone’. It’s almost hilarious the way the world works like that,” she toys with the hem of her shirt as she talks. “Yeah, and I told you eight months might as well been eight years, look where we are now.” She laughs, leaning into his side, “What the hell happened to us?” “The real question is, why are you out here? I don’t know much about Georgia, but she seems pretty good to you.”

      “She’s amazing, too good to everyone sometimes if we’re all honest. All about trust and second chances. Georgia can really give you insight into your own humanity you know? I lost mine for a while, then there was her.” He nods, “Yeah I think we all lost ours a some point.” “Not her though, and I’m so proud of her, but the idea of walking back into that room made me feel sick.” “You know he can’t hurt her again, right?” She nods, her head falling back, “I know, but last time I was in there I was laughing with Dante, we were planning a double date to celebrate that the vote went through until he had to leave. Now he and Marge are dead, my wife has a black eye and a busted lip, and I couldn’t protect either of them, or you.” “My hand wasn’t your fault, you weren’t here. You didn’t kill Dante, or torture George. That’s not your fault.” “No, Ten, how long were you alone out there before your team found you? You lost Ma and Pa and I was with Lieutenant Dante looking for his wife states away. I should have gone looking for you the moment the apocalypse started, fuck my orders.”

       “You knew Dante a long time?” “I did, he was my Lieutenant until we got separated in Colorado four years ago. I just headed North from there, found Georgia, and trusted my gut that I would run into you instead of looking for you.” “Stop blaming yourself for me being alone, I grew up (Y/N). And we found each other eventually.” She fought a laugh, the person she knew as her brother was lost, she would have to find comfort in the new person who occupied his body. She never expected him to be the kid she left alone years before but she never imagined he’d be like this now. “I guess we did, Tomcat.” The dark haired male laughs, standing up and offering her his hand, “Now, let’s get you to your wife. You need to properly introduce me to my sister in law.” She laughs, taking his hand, “Thanks for being cool about that by the way. Pa would have lost it the moment he saw us together.” “We always had each other’s backs, it was the ruling of not getting in trouble with Pa,” the boy laughs, pulling her up from the ground. And for that moment, he was Tommy.

Better together Part 4 - 10k POV I came back from my walk about 5 minutes ago but before I came back I couldn't help but walk past Ariel in the meadow. I was sleeping in the guest room since the house was a 2 story. The guest room was down stairs with a window so you can see outside but people from outside can't see inside. " I was looking outside when I noticed Ariel's red hair move. I looked more closer and noticed Ariel was getting up and leaving Eduardo there alone while she walked back to the house. Then after 2 minutes I heard her open the door and look for bailey. "Bailey? Where are you boy?" She whispered so I decided to get bailey since he was with me in my room and take him to Ariel. "10k? Why did you have Bailey? Did you hurt him? Like you hurt me?" She said "No I was watching him until you come back look Ariel come with me." I did and walked back to my room. I patted the seat next to me and she sat down while Bailey jumped on the bed and fell asleep again. "Ok 10k what is it?" "Ariel I need you to come back with us please. And about earlier I looked down because I felt bad that I thought like that I felt really bad and I just couldn't handle it anymore. Then all that happens and after you talked to Mack we were faking it I was holding in my laugh when Murphy noticed and said he wanted to talk to you. I never meant to hurt you and never let plan to. Ariel I love you. There I said it I don't have to go crazy now" she looked down "Look 10k I like you too but I can't go near you cause my cousin and then Eduardo. I didn't mean anything I said to you earlier I was just so mad I'm sorry 10k, It's my fault I'm so so so sorry" she said crying I pulled her into a hug and said "it's not your fault it's mine because I was the one who was selfish I'm sorry" we pulled away and i looked outside towards the meadow. "What are you going to do about him?" I asked her turned back to face her "I don't know but I'm really tired" she said and laid down on one side of the bed with bailey in between I while I was on the other side. "Ariel?" "Yeah 10k?" "Do you still sleep with teddy bears" I said chuckling cause I noticed she was hugging Bailey. "Yeah Bailey is my teddy bear" I smiled and said "good night Ariel" and kissed her forehead while she was already sleep and petted baileys head. -next morning- I woke up on the floor and to bailey licking my face. "Hi Bailey where is Ariel?" He ran out the room soon as I saw she wasn't in bed. So I ran with him he ran though the house and we still couldn't find her. He barked and woke everyone else up. "Shut that dog up" Murphy moaned "Ariel is gone. I can't find her anywhere in the house did you hear the door open anytime this morning?" They all got up quickly and shook their heads. "Ok me and bailey are going to look for her and once that's done we are coming back. Alright let's go Bailey" we walk out side and same Ariel talking to Eduardo. Then after watching he slapped her and she fell to the ground I ran back inside the house and told them and they came with me. We all ran to Ariel while I was first there so I helped her get up and walk to her cousins house while they sat Eduardo down and Mack and Addy went to go get a guard or someone from Ariel's family. "Right there that's his house" Ariel said pointing to her cousins house, we walked to the door and knocked. Her cousin opened the door and noticed I was holding her close while she was holding her face, he looked at me and I mouthed "her boyfriend Eduardo" he nodded and gave me a side hug and bright Ariel inside with me as well and I put her on the couch while he went to get an ice pack then came back. "Thank you so much for helping her." I nodded and said "I have to go back cause he's still there and my group is watching him while Mack and Addy went to get a guard." "Hey Carl can you go with 10k to get Eduardo?" A boy that was about our age came and followed Ariel looked up at him and blushed 'oh no not again' I thought "hey carl? Is it uh are you apart of Ariel's family too?" He shook his head "Nope family friend I never met Ariel until today and she is actually pretty hot" I rolled my eyes and said "well she's helping us get out friend to California so she's coming with us" I scoffed and kept walking to Eduardo. Me and Doc said if there is trouble to say something in sign language and he'll nod which I did and he nodded and whispered to Warren "we need to get out of here" she nodded and we left carl with Eduardo and walked back home. "We have to leave this place" Doc said "What about Ariel is she staying?"Cassandra asked they all looked at me. "I talked to her last night and she didn't say if she was coming back or not but let's just say we talked everything out and we like each other but that's not the point right now, the point is I talked to her about staying with us so I think she's still thinking about it I mean her family is here so I'm not sure " I said "Who cares if her family is here leave her here and let's get Murphy to California" Mack said we were all shocked even Addy. Addy, Ariel, and Cassandra all grown a sister like bond which in my opinion is adorable . "What?! No! Ariel is our friend and we are not leaving her here Mack. Yeah sure her family is here but who knows what could happen to them and this place. We need her with us to fight and help get Mr.big mouth over here to California and like she said she lived there before and she knows the whole state she can help us get around things!" Addy and Cassandra said. We all agreed including Murphy.😇ok Part 4 is here now Part 5 next week because school is tomorrow so bye ppl ❣️😇

The Mattress Store

Third person POV Au where Red, 10k and 5k find a mattress store. Special thanks to @glitterquadricorn @natszang @warrenroberta @northernlightsradio and @eclipso-universe for inspiring this. ----- The trio has been walking for days after being separated from the rest of the group. 5k rides on 10k's back asleep. "What if we never find them?" Red whispers. "Don't talk like that, we're going to find them again." 10k whispers back. 5k begins to slide down 10k's back so he hoists him back up. "Fine, but still what will we do if we can't find the group? We have to have a plan." "I don't know, maybe head up north. The Z's don't like the cold." "Well, I don't like the cold." Red says crossing her arms. 10k chuckles and Red smacks his arm. "Come on, I think I see a few buildings up ahead." ---- "Hey bud, wake up. We found a few buildings to rest at." 10k says nudging 5k. He slides off his back and rubs his eyes, "Okay papa." He groans, "Where are we?" "A mattress store." Red replies and puts a hand on his shoulder. 10k slides his gun off his shoulder and brings it up to his shoulder, "I'm going to go and clear this first store. You guys stay out here." He walks inside and clears a Z near the front door with his knife. It's body falls limp at his feet. He proceeds to walk through the store. He sees a few more Z's behind the checkout counter and takes them out easily with his rifle. He goes back to the front doors and walks out. "It's clear, we can rest here for a while." "I'm hungry papa." 5k says to 10k. "I'll get you some food in a sec, let's just get inside." --- Inside the store the trio has a small meal of goldfish and graham crackers in the employees lounge. "So what's your count now, 5k?" 10k asks. "I'm at 1,576!" 5k responds cheerfully. "Dang kid, you're catching up to me!" 10k says giving 5k a pat on the back. Red yawns, "Well while you guys talk about numbers, I'm going to go and sleep on one of the mattresses. Goodnight." "We'll be coming too. I'm pretty tired myself." 10k says standing up and pushing his chair in. ---- They walk out to the stores main floor and look at all the mattresses. "Which one do you want to sleep on, you pick." Red says to 10k. "Lets get a king, I've never slept in a king." 10k says grinning. "King it is." Red says smirking. 10k runs flops down on the bed like a little kid. "You're so immature." Red says falling down next to him. 10k just laughs and pulls his goggles off his head. Red pulls her hood down and lets her brown hair out of its braid. It flows like a waterfall and frames her face. "You look nice with your hair down, you should leave it that way more." 10k smirks. Red blushes, "Thanks. We need to do something about your hair though." "There is nothing wrong with my hair!" 10k whispers back. "You obviously haven't looked in a mirror for a while..." Red laughs. 10k leans closer to Red, he's a good 6 inches away from her now. "I-" 10k starts but gets cut off. "Hi papa, hi mama!" 5k says jumping between them. "Hi buddy." Red says and takes his goggles off his head. 5k snuggles closer between them, "I want to sleep with you guys." "Well okay I guess." 10k laughs. ---- A few 20 minutes later when 5k drifts off to sleep, 10k pulls his jacket off and places it over top of 5k's shoulders. A small smile forms on Reds lips from this little gesture, "What were you trying to say earlier?" 10k stops playing with 5k's hair and looks into Red's deep brown eyes, "I was going to say that I love you." Red's grin grows wider, "I love you too."

{A/N: this chapter is very long read if you dare😂} Better together Part 3 - Ariels POV "Hey Alex?" I asked my cousin "yeah?" "How would you feel if I stayed here? You know with the family?" "I don't know h don't you lov-" he got cut off by people calling my name to the front gate. We both walked over there and looked down not know what to do. "Ariel?" I looked up to see "Eduardo?!" I said and ran away back to the cafeteria when I bumped into someone and fell on my butt. I looked up to see Mack. Out of breath I said "Mack..I'm..Sorry..for bumping into..you" he pulled me away to another table where no one could see or hear us and he sat me down then he sat in front of me. "Ariel look I heard and saw what happened 10k told us please stay with us we need a really good fighter like you and another sniper. Now tell me why you were running. Were you running away from something or someone?" I nodded "yeah actually I was running away from some one. My Boyfriend Eduardo. Here's the thing I never told you guys about him before because he was trouble and he only used me and when I talk about him I would go on a Z killing rampage that no one wants to see. He hurt me and none of my family knew they thought he was an angel but he wasn't. I shot him when he found me in the beginning of all of this and we dated then I showed him to my family then the 2nd year he left. Guess he found me again but thats why I was running. And sorry again" "okay we will keep you safe come on" he said and went back to the others. And then I got there everyone looked at me "Ariel" they said completely annoyed "You guys sound mad are you okay?" I asked "Ariel I can talk to you for a second?" Murphy asked me. Everyone including myself was shocked but in response I nodded and went to the table me and Mack were just at. " So what's up Murphy?" I asked " Look they are mad do you no why?" I shook my head "they are mad because you want to stay and we really need someone like you with us even tho I'm a pain in the ass you will get used to me and I'm pretty sure that will happen but anyways we need you with us. 10k needs you with him." I looked up when he said 10k and had a tear rolling down my cheek I got up and gave Murphy a hug and said "Thanks for telling me. You know Murphy I'm starting to look at you as a friend like a best friend" I smiled then felt him smile too I pulled away "That's so nice of you Ariel I haven't had a friend since this whole thing started thanks for saying that" he said and we both walked back to Warren and he others then gave Murphy another hug before I said "bye Murphy." And left the cafeteria. 10k POV Ariel came with Mack I guess they were talking cause she fell which was kinda funny. "Ok guys she's coming pretend to act mad so she will come back with us" Doc said which we all put serious faces on and we looked at her then back at our food when Doc knocked under the table which was our queue to act annoyed. "Ariel" we all said rolling our eyes "You guys sound mad are you okay?" She asked while I held my laugh in when Murphy saw and said "Ariel can I talk to you for a second?" We were all 'shocked' and so was Ariel then they walked away to another table where we can't hear them and neither can they. They came back about 5 minutes after and Ariel gave Murphy a hug said bye and left. "What the hell Murphy did you do some type of mind control on that girl?! For her to hug you?!" I whisper yelled "No I didn't she confessed to me that she looks at me as her best friend okay?" Murphy said "So you and Ariel are friends now?" Addy asked "Yup" he said "Well since you guys are friends now try to convince Her to come back with her. Murphy your our only chance on getting her back please" Warren begged -10 minutes later-Ariel's POV I saw my family again and once I finished I went to go take a walk around to see the place. "Hey Ariel wait up!" I heard and as I turned around it was Eduardo "What the hell do you want now Eduardo?" " I saw your dog Bailey he's really cute. Do you mind if I join?" He said asked if he could join the walk with me "I don't know are you going to hurt me again?" I said with attitude "oh come on babe it's me Eduardo I would never hurt you I've changed, believe me, please believe me" he said I sighed and said "I believe you" I said and walked to give him a hug. We started walking around hand-in-hand until it was dark out and the stars were shining bright. "Hey Eduardo can we swing by Glenn's house real quick I need to ask him something then after my house?" "Are thing come on" he said and we started walking towards my cousins house. I knocked one the door and Jayden answered "hey jay can I talk to your dad real quick?" "Sure thing. DAD?! ARIEL IS HERE SHE NEEDS TO TALK TO YOU" I laughed when Edward came to the door. "What's up Ariel?" "I was wondering if we can stay out a little longer than lights out so we can just look at the stars is that okay?" "Of course where will you be staying though" "in the meadow" "the sure I will have just 1 guard watching you every now and then okay?" "Okay thanks Ed" I said and gave him a hug then left to my house. I opened the door and walked in while Eduardo was just outside wait for me "Ariel? What is he doing here?" 10k asked since we are all sleeping in the same house. "I just came to get blankets I didn't intend to talk to any of you" I said bluntly and saw Murphy "Hey Murphy" "Hey Ariel who's that tall handsome fella over there?" He said clearly talking about "Eduardo? Oh him that's my boyfriend I just came cause we are staying in the meadow and I needed blankets" I said and smiled "oh okay bye Ariel" I didn't say anything but give them a wave then leave with Eduardo. "Hey Ariel who was that kid he seems to like you" "who 10k? No we just met I don't know anything about the guy and besides I have you" I said and put his arm around me and peck his lips and kept walking towards he meadow. I gave Eduardo the blanket and he layed it on the grass. After hours of talking we fell asleep in the meadow. 10k POV Once Ariel left the house everyone, and I mean everyone, looked at me. "He's about to snap just wait for it in 3..2..1.." Doc said "Ariel?! Has a boyfriend?! How come I never heard about this?! She belongs with me not that jackass Eduardo! I'm the one she cares most about! She is supposed to be mine! My world! My everything! With out her I'm lost!" I said pacing back and forth. Everyone tried calming me down by saying "Calm down 10k she's probably trying to make you jealous and that just her friend." "Don't worry about it 10k she's just a girl. Remember there are plenty other girls out there if their not dead" Murphy said "SHUT UP MURPHY! YOU ARE HER FRIEND YOU TALK TO HER!!" "I'm going for a walk I need to blow some steam off..." I said and walked out the door and walked to the meadow and saw Ariel and Eduardo sleeping under the stars. 'God the way the moonlight hits her skin she looks so beautiful' I say to my self in my head and continue with my walk...🤘🏻Hey guys Part 3 is here and Part 4 tomorrow cause where I am right now it's 11:36pm and I'm really tired so goodnight or good morning where ever you are ❣️🤘🏻

I ran. I couldn’t stay in the Mercy lab, it reminded me too much of her. My legs pumped at an increased speed and I pushed harder into the woods.

“10k! Get back here right now!” I hear Warren yell from far behind me.

No, I can’t be there any longer. I thought.

I don’t know where I’m headed. My legs carry me to wherever they want to go. The woods gets denser and harder to run through the farther I head into it.

I stop at a fallen tree. Panting from the amount of energy I exerted in a short time. I sit down on the log exhausted, and put my head into my hands.

I can’t stop thinking about her. Her long brown hair pulled into a braid. Her red hooded cloak that falls over her shoulders and down to her waist. Her wooden staff. And those rich, beautiful, brown eyes.

The tears fall in steady streams down my cheeks. I don’t care to hide them right now. Not after everything that happened. My sobs grow louder the longer I sit there.

Mom, Dad, Homer, 5k, now her. Why does everyone that matters to me die?

I’m sucked back into reality when I hear the groan of a Z behind me.

Maybe I shouldn’t kill it, maybe I should let it get me. I think.

No way, Doc and Warren need you. I think back to myself.

I get up and pull my knife out of my belt. The Z is dressed in a red hazmat suit and a protective mask covers its face.

A civilian from Mercy labs that didn’t make it.

I don’t bother to look at it anymore. I pike it in the head and let its body fall onto the ground in front of me.

I need to head back to the group, they need me.

I turn around and look for the way I came.

What way did I come here from? I ask myself.

I can’t think straight anymore. My head is spinning and I can’t see straight.

The sky above me starts to darken, and I realize that I’m running out of daylight.

Where are you guys?
