October 8th-13th Long Study Tour: Finland
This week I traveled to Finland with my core class, Childhood Development in Scandinavia. We had a long full week of sight seeing and touring various schools in Finland.
History of Finland:
Finland did not have its own independence until 1917. It was first under the control of Russia, and then Sweden. They will celebrate their 100th year of independence this year! Finland is a small country with over 100,000 lakes. The education in Finland has been repetitively rated as one of the highest in the world. Part of the reason for this is because Finland is a welfare state. Education and healthcare are essentially free. Each time an individual has a baby, a baby box is delivered to their door from the government. This baby box includes a 3 year supply of diapers, clothes, and bedding for the child. This sets the precedent for the culture being child centered even throughout their education. The teacher education is a 5 year program which prepares teachers better than other countries. Fun fact, there at 5 million people living in Finland and there are 3.5 million saunas! It is embedded within the culture of Finland to spend time each day in a sauna. Even some important business meetings are held in saunas!
Sunday:
We arrived in Helsinki, Finland around 5pm. We settled into our hotel, The Original Sokos Hotel by Vaakas, and headed to dinner at KuKu. We were served a traditional Finnish meal of meatballs with mashed potatoes and a lingonberry sauce. Lingonberries are similar to small cranberries that grow rapidly in Finland in the months of September and October.
Monday:
We woke up early and ate breakfast in our hotel. Then we met and had class presentations on Teacher Education, Welfare State, and PISA Achievement. My group presented on Teacher Education in Finland and it went really well! Afterwards, we had a student guided walking tour around Helsinki to various landmarks such as the Helsinki Cathedral, Senate Square, Market, and the Havis Amanda Statue. We learned more about Helsinki’s history and culture. Then, we met for lunch at Salutorget. After lunch, we took a ferry to the Suomenlinna Fortress Island where we had a guided tour. This fortress was beautiful and had a lot of history from when Finland was at war with Sweden to gain their independence. It is and island surrounded by a body of water which made it easier for the fins to defend themselves. We returned to Helsinki city afterwards and had dinner our own.
Tuesday:
We woke up and had breakfast at the hotel again this morning. Then, we had two final class presentations on ECEC (Early Childhood Education and Care), and Special Needs of Children in Finland. Our class then split into two groups to see two different preschools. I visited the Tilhi Preschool. The feeling of this school was apparent when we had to take our shoes off at the entrance. This was a fascinating institution. I could really see how educational theory and practice were in harmony and at play here. The children truly had so much independence to discover, explore, and grow on their own with little guidance. I could see that the teachers were educated on where to step in and more importantly, where to step out. The children are encouraged to make mistakes and learn from them. One instance that stood out to me, was when a little boy was struggling to put his shoes on. We observed him struggle for a while until a teacher came by and sat him down on the bench. After this small assistance, the boy immediately and successfully put his shoes on. I could really see how Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development was apparent. The teacher could have put the shoe on for the child, or just ignored him altogether. Yet, she did just enough for him to figure it out on his own. After this profound visit, we met up with the rest of class for lunch at Shanghai Cowboy for a Mexican meal. After lunch, we visited the Kiasma Modern Art Museum. This was not my favorite activity, but I still enjoyed seeing the museum. We had time on our own after the museum to explore and have dinner.
Wednesday:
This morning we went to an elementary school in Helsinki. It was called the Hietakumpu School. This school was very diverse in its students and had many subjects and electives for students. There was even a crafts class focused on knitting and sewing which I found interesting. I visited a science, english, and crafts class of 3rd-5th graders. This school was fascinating because I could sense how in tune the teachers were with their students. Relationships between the students and faculty were fostered and put first over academics. I could really see how the teachers knew the most effective ways to transition from one thing to the next in a classroom. It was also interesting that there is a special needs classroom at this school where there is a school dog in which the students struggling can find solace in interacting with a class animal. After this visit, we had more time to explore Helsinki on our own. For dinner we went to Skiffer Erottaja which had delicious flatbread pizzas. After dinner we had a very fun karaoke night with our class at a bar called Pataässä (Spare of Aces). So fun for us to get together and sing our hearts out after a long day!
Thursday:
This morning we packed up our things and left Helsinki. We traveled to the Laurea University for Applied Sciences Social services program (B.A) This is where students gain their bachelors degree in social services. It was a very modern university with a diverse group of students from all over the world. Most of their classes are given in English. I sat in on a class on Alcohol and Drugs in Finland. I got together with a group of the students in the class and discussed alcohol and drugs in Finland and compared and contrasted with other countries. This was fascinating to see how alcoholism is increasing in Finland. We examined why this was the case and how to prevent it. Afterwards, we ate lunch in their cafeteria, and then got on the bus to arrive at The Green Windom Nuuksio National Park (Also known as Pekka’s place). This nature reserve was absolutely stunning. The leaves on the trees were more vibrant and colorful than I have ever seen. Pekka, the owner, greeted us and led us to a campfire where had tea, coffee, cinnamon buns, and sausages. After this I went canoeing with some classmates around the pond on the land. I really enjoyed this canoe trip and I got to bond more with my classmates. After canoeing, we all spent time as a class in one of Pekka’s saunas. Before dinner, we threw darts at a dart board, played cards, and collected mushrooms from the land. For dinner a beautiful and delicious home cooked meal was prepared for us. We started with freshly baked bread and an amazing trumpet mushroom soup. This was followed by a warm smoked salmon and baked potato with a cream gravy. The salmon was accompanied by two slices of reindeer! Reindeer is a very common delicacy in Finland. For desert we had blueberry cobbler with a cream glaze. After dinner we were led into the most cozy hut surrounded by candles and reindeer fur. There were two campfires and we all sat in a circle surrounding them. Here, our class talked about our week and our favorite highlights of the trip. We also sang many songs together and I even sang oceans for my class! A great emotional and bonding time for our class to be together. We went to sleep with full hearts and good memories.
Friday:
Today we had breakfast at Pekka’s place and hung out around the house. We then packed up our things for our last day and went to the Haltia Nature School and Nature Center. We had a guide who took us on a hike through the nature center where we played some games and enjoyed the natural setting. This was the first day we had seen the sun in 5 days! We were definitely all happy about being outside at this time. After the hike, we had lunch at the center and then the guide gave us a tour around their indoor museum about Finland’s geography and the nature surrounding it. After this, we got back on the bus and headed to the airport back to Copenhagen. I will have long lasting memories for this special trip with special people.

It will certainly be practical to take an on-line graduate credit report program in the area if you have a passion in functioning with special needs pupils. Additionally, much of them prefer to see the instructor who they are learning the language with. How frequently her father, a lifelong instructor, had actually wanted the excellent first-grade instructor: a nurturing fan of learning whose genuine approval, enthusiasm, and also warmth would certainly promote her curiosity and embolden her academic path. While its ok for children to be cute on TELEVISION, increasingly more teachers at the grade school degree are discovering ways to present concepts of geography and also world affairs into the classroom at previous ages. My goal was to get the kiddos to fulfill that objective and also do it by the 100th day of college. As a teacher you want to take the information you have gotten as well as apply it, however every asperger's trainee is different, so it's tough to take expertise you have actually obtained from one experience, as well as apply it to a circumstance with another trainee with asperger's syndrome. A great deal of schools even have actually a created plan with guidelines for educators where they specify appropriate habits of educators. Innovation has actually certainly been a wonderful aid for music teachers and music trainees alike. Ashish Kumar is Writer of Ferns n Petals is a leading on the internet Send Teachers day blossoms through fnp reveal shipment services. Very intriguing read ... though I wish that this isn't really the future, I rather like the suggestion of human educators lingering.
