Is A&W Halal? Can Canadian Muslims Eat From This Food Chain?
All Muslims follow halal dietary guidelines no matter which part of the world they live in. However, finding halal food becomes challenging for Muslims living in non-Muslim countries. So they hunt halal food chains and restaurants to enjoy delicious meals like others. A & W is one of the most famous food chains in Canada. But is it Muslim-friendly? Can Canadian Muslims stop by A & W like all others? The concerning thing for Muslims is to ensure the restaurant is halal. In today’s quick guide we will explore the dietary status of A&W. Let’s find out if A&W is halal certified and if Muslims can eat here confidently or not.
What’s the Dietary Status of A&W?
Muslims never compromise on halal food no matter how popular a food chain is or how delicious their food is. So, is A&W halal? A simple answer to this question is a NO. A&W is not halal neither in Canada nor any other country except Singapore. It is the only A&W chain that has halal certification. All other A&W chains worldwide do not offer halal food. It is a famous international food chain but not Muslim-friendly. They neither prepare the food according to Islamic guidelines nor the ingredients are 100% halal.
A&W Halal Menu Options
It is true A&W has no halal certification but not every item on their menu is haram. There are a few options that a Muslim can try at A&W. Here is a list of Muslim-friendly A&W halal menu options that are for every Muslim.
Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Beyond Meat Burger
Veggie Deluxe Burger
Mozza Burger
French Fries
Onion Rings
Salad
Apple Sauce
Root Beer Float
All these options are Muslim-friendly. However, to make these 100% halal do not add any mayonnaise or beef patty to your burgers. The meat source of A&W is not halal so it is better to avoid having a meat meal here. Also, they have plenty of chicken options. Just confirm if their chicken is halal before ordering. Feel free to order any chicken meal from the A&W menu if you get a green signal.
Final Verdict
A&W is not halal for Muslims because it neither has a halal certification nor their preparation method align with halal guidelines. However, if you're visiting A&W with your friends you can try our recommended halal options from their menu. But it is better to look for a 100% halal restaurant than to have only a few options to have your meal.

6 feet, 200 pounds of 100% certified Canadian beef is a great Slogan that if i already didnt love nate mac i would definitely vote for him just from that
That’s honestly what sold me on the campaign. It’s such a great slogan (and I was already teetering on the edge of being a Nate Mac believer anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

three french horns -> three goal horns | n. mackinnon
a/n: and like clockwork, here is fic number three in my 12 days of christmas series! i wrote this one a while ago and i hurt myself re-reading it to proof it, so i hope you all like it! rest of the christmas series linked here.
word count: 4,037
warnings: alcohol, drinking
“Hey, Nate?” you called out from the living room when you heard the back door open, signaling his reappearance in the house after letting the dogs outside.
“Yeah, baby?” he asked as he stomped his boots on the mat, shaking the last bit of the early Denver snow off.
You asked the question you’d been asking him since two weeks after his birthday, the same question you’d been asking a variation of for the three months before his birthday. “Nate, what do you want for Christmas?”
The sound that left Nate’s mouth was barely human, a groan coming from deep within, from the place that never knew what he wanted for any major gift giving holiday of any kind. You tried to be original, get sentimental things, but it was hard to buy for someone who could literally buy anything they ever wanted. Nate didn’t have big, expensive wishes, so if he wanted something, he often just bought it on the spot and you were none-the-wiser until it showed up at his house. This penchant, this bad habit, carried throughout the holiday season; it was a perpetual state of being for Nathan MacKinnon. This meant that items Nate ordered for himself were as likely to show up December 24th as any other day of the year, which was eternally infuriating as a person in his life trying to buy him gifts on the semi-regular basis.
“I don’t know,” he answered you, like he did every other time. “I’ll like it because it’s from you.”
That response was sweet the first, second, and half-sweet the third time he’d used it on you. Now, that response was worn out like an old pair of jeans, with holes in the thighs and the knees hanging together by a thread, absolutely unusable at this point in time really. Yet Nate continued to say it, like that string of seven words didn’t light a fire in your stomach completely unlike the kind crackling under the stockings on the mantle right now.
“Nate,” you groaned, all too similarly to how he had when you asked your question. Spend enough time with a person and you pick up their habits. You and Nate were a completely unoriginal example of that. “You know I hate when you say that.”
Nate rolled his eyes and shrugged, “Well, I don’t really know. A hat trick? But you can’t get me that, I’ve got to get that for me.”
The infamous illusive hat trick. While it wasn’t those dreaded seven words, you were pretty sure you had heard about this hat trick that was alluding him every other day at this point. In all fairness to Nate, the amount of times he had scored twice in the first two periods of a game this season and been held off the scoreboard in the second was absurd. Commentators were joking about it, his teammates were chirping him over not one, not two, but three missed empty netters that would’ve sealed it, even though Nate liked to say those didn’t really count as hat tricks. Greater than all of that, Nate was starting to incredibly frustrated with himself and his performances. You knew Nate was a competitive guy before you even went on your first date with him, but his competitiveness ran deep and honestly you weren’t sure your relationship would work if you were even an ounce more competitive than you were. Nate had to win, he had to achieve his goals. This goal was quite simply just three goals, but it continued to be just out of reach this season and coming up on the holiday season, pushing the halfway mark, Nate was starting to think it might not happen this year.
“You’ll get one, Nate,” you sighed. “You’re so close and you’re too good not to get whatever you put your mind to.”
“I got a good feeling about the game tomorrow,” he replied, sliding up next to you on the couch to throw a Christmas sweater-covered arm around your shoulders. “My good luck charm is going to be there, right?”
Nate wasn’t superstitious in the slightest, but he said he always scored more whenever you came. Statistically, a complete lie, but it made you feel special all the same. He kissed your temple softly as he relaxed into the couch cushions next to you.
“So, what are we watching? Classic or trashy Christmas?”
That question itself somehow encapsulated every single reason you loved Nathan MacKinnon, despite his pension for buying his own Christmas presents, his overly competitive nature, and the difficulty that came with trying to buy him a present. Nate didn’t love Christmas movies; he wasn’t a hater like some people you’d dated before, but you adored them, both classic and trashy alike. Nate jumped on board with whatever you liked, no questions asked. He always said you didn’t sign up to date all of his teammates that walked through the door scrounging for homemade food or the long hours alone, the least he could do was be as supportive of the things you liked as you were about hockey for him. Nate’s support came in casual, steady waves of constantly and consistently showing up, no matter how tired he was, no matter how long the day before had been. He might fall asleep twenty minutes into the movie, but Nate was here and active and present for as long as he could stay awake. He’d cross deserts and move mountains for an hour with you, and some days that’s what it took, but Nate showed up and jumped on board, which made him the easiest person in the world to love in spite of everything else. It made him the only person you wanted to spend this Christmas and every other one in the future with.
The next day, with his last name on your back and a Santa hat on your head, you found yourself in a position that felt all too familiar this season. You were watching the ice with eager eyes among the other wives and girlfriends. Your breath caught in your throat halfway through the first when you saw two seconds after him that there was nothing between Nate and the net but open ice and a goaltender. You slowly stood up, leaning forward as if those all important inches would help you see the ice better. You didn’t miss the puck sailing over the blocker’s side of the goaltender, or the eruption of cheers from everyone around you as the goal horn rang out, hopefully the first of three for Nate this evening. Mel hugged you, as if you had anything to do with Nate scoring. You adjusted your hat, pulling at the fluffy white edge until it sat a little less haphazardly on your head as you cheered.
“Two more, right?” Mel waggled her eyebrows at you and you rolled your eyes.
“For my sake, I hope so,” you laughed.
Going into Christmas break without this elusive hat trick meant the next four days would be spent with Nate’s mind half at the rink, trying to scheme and plan and game his way into a hat trick, as if the part he was missing was anything other than luck. Maybe he didn’t need regular luck though, maybe just a little bit of Christmas would do the trick tonight. Your third beer in, a vain attempt to calm your nerves with alcohol, and five minutes into the second, on the power play, you watched as Nate easily sailed in his second goal of the game from the high slot, causing the ever familiar cheers and the ringing of the Avalanche goal horn to sound out across the arena.
Two down, and hopefully one to go.
“Hatty watch,” one of the other girls sang out from behind you, giving your shoulders a squeeze.
You let out a loud, long breath, causing a wave of laughter to ripple across the other women around you. Mel teased you about it; they all did. Nate’s quest was well known among the group, something they were equally supportive and teasing about.
“He’ll get one,” Mel assured you with a comforting pat to your leg. “He’s too good not to.”
You really thought he had it. You watched as Mikko and Nate peeled off from the defenders caught on an odd change, leading to a two-on-one with a lone opposing forward doing his best, but poor, impersonation of a defensemen. Mikko passed the puck to Nate, which Nate passed back easily and set himself up for the perfect slap shot on the return. The quick passing had sent the other team’s player sprawling over the ice. It was just Nate and the goaltender, who was frantically shifting his eyes from Mikko to Nate, tilting back and forth on the ice. Mikko’s pass was perfect, right on the middle of Nate’s tape and Nate was ready for the pass. It was tracking high glove side, exactly where Nate wanted it to go, right into the back of the net. The goalie was facing Mikko, two key seconds behind the actual action. Except out of nowhere, the Grinch stole Christmas and Nate’s hat trick when the goalie’s glove suddenly appeared in the path the puck was taking and wrapped around the puck, just on the wrong side of the goal line for Nate.
The referee blew the whistle and signaled no goal. Nate’s hands dropped down, stick hanging low. His head tilted up toward the ceiling of the arena and you could practically hear the groan rise from deep in his chest. It was absolute robbery at its finest and the entire arena knew luck wasn’t on Nate’s side that night. You slumped down into your seat, preparing yourself for yet another two goal game and a frustrated Nate waiting for you in the tunnel when it was over. There were another twenty minutes left in the game, but if the first half of the season had taught you anything, third periods weren’t where Nate racked up anything other than wins and assists, both of which he loved, but he just wanted a third goal, just once. Mikko and Gabe each having one already this season, all six goals involving Nate as either the primary or secondary assist, didn’t help either.
“I think you need to pray or something,” Mel told you with a laugh. “Pray to anything and anyone out there at this point.”
You cleared your throat and looked up at the ceiling of the Pepsi arena, “Santa, I know this isn’t how you take requests,” Mel and the girls around you were already laughing, “but please, pretty freaking please, can we just get some Christmas miracle magic vibes in here? It’s all he wants for Christmas. Please and thank you and I hope you have a Merry Christmas.”
“Are you supposed to say amen if you pray to Santa?” someone behind you asked.
“Look I’m not opposed to it,” you sighed. “It just didn’t feel like the right ending when I was asking for a Christmas miracle.”
The girls all laughed and you just stared up at the ceiling. Maybe Santa might grant your unorthodox request delivered via an even more unorthodox method. Maybe you should’ve written him a letter and dropped it into one of those charity red mailboxes at Macy’s. Maybe Nate just wouldn’t be getting the one thing he wanted for Christmas and there was absolutely nothing you could do about it. You knew he was joking when he asked for a hat trick for Christmas, but joking or not, it was the only thing he even sort of mentioned wanting. If sending out a Christmas wish audibly in the middle of the Pepsi arena was what it took, you were more than happy to do it.
You grabbed your fourth and fifth beer together during the intermission, knowing full and well that you didn’t want to miss a second of one of Nate’s shifts in case something good happened. If after all of this time, all of this waiting, all of Nate’s back and forth debating, if you missed his hat trick goal because you were grabbing another beer, you would have to guess that higher powers didn’t exist and the hockey gods loved laughing at you and maybe Christmas wasn’t that magical after all.
The third period was half over when you finished your fourth beer. Your right leg had been bouncing on the concrete since the period started. Nate was getting some good looks, and added another assist to his point tally for the night, but you and everyone knew what he actually wanted tonight. A slashing call with eight minutes to go put the Avalanche back on the power play, and you knew Nate was going to fight to play every bit of those two minutes he could get, which meant you were about to be in for a mentally exhausting two minutes. Mel offered her hand to you, already knowing you would need her to ground you through this.
The first shot on the power play from Mikko ended up in the opposing goaltender’s glove. Nate lined up for the next face-off and you swore you didn’t breathe as soon as the puck left the referee's hand. Nate swept it back easily to a waiting Gabe. You gripped Mel’s hand hard, grateful you both did this for each other often enough that she didn’t mind. Nate slid up through the low slot and you saw the stars aligning as Gabe sent the puck perfectly in Nate’s direction. Nate was already ready for it when it came, the puck on his stick for less than a second. Your eyes went wide and you felt like you were about to break Mel’s hand as the goaltender shrugged his shoulder up to block Nate’s shot, but he came up short and the puck hit the back of the net.
You were screaming as you jumped to your feet, arms wrapping tightly around Mel as someone else hugged you from behind, again like you’d done anything other than practically give yourself a heart attack watching it. Nate was surrounded by his teammates on the ice, earning a swift pat on the top of the head from Gabe. A glance up at the Jumbotron showed you the wide, bright smile on his face, filling with relief and absolute joy. Mel grabbed your hat by the pom pom and chucked it down towards the ice, making you laugh and a smile that rivaled Nate’s come across your face.
“Finally,” you breathed out a sigh of relief as the arena calmed itself, calming you with it.
You plopped back down into your seat, hatless with half a beer and your pride in Nate left to coast you through the next ten minutes. You knew Nate was going to be in a good mood, and you just wanted to get through the next ten minutes of the game to get to him and congratulate him yourself. The score was heavy in favor of the Avs and they weren’t in any danger of losing this game, so you got to drink your beer and let out a long breath you’d been holding since Nate first came home after back to back two goal games in October without a hat trick in sight.
You were practically bouncing on your heels as you waited in the tunnel for him, fingers fussing with the frayed edge of your denim jacket to get out some of your anxious energy. The second he rounded the corner, a wide, gorgeous smile on his face, you ran toward him. Nate wasn’t the type for large public displays of affection, but satisfaction from your incredibly competitive boyfriend was a hell of an influencer and he opened his arms wide for you. You jumped into him and he stumbled a second before catching you easily, one hand guiding your legs around his waist, the other supporting the back of your thighs.
“Congratulations,” you mumbled in his ear as he laughed at your openly shared excitement for him.
“Thanks, baby,” he told you, the smile he was wearing evident in his voice.
“Proud of you always,” you reminded him as you untucked your head from his neck.
You said it after every single game, win or lose, five points or no points, goal or no goal, you told Nate you were proud of him after every single game. The stats sheet didn’t matter to you. You loved him and you saw the grueling work he put in every single day, every single second he was on the ice. You were proud of him no matter what, and it was one of the thousands of reasons he had come to love you for. Your support, your pride in him and the work he put in never wavered. It was steadfast, something hard to come by in a life as crazy as he lived. You were his rock, his home, and he felt it like the gradual, comforting warmth from sitting by the fire on Christmas Eve, when the world seemed a little more good than it actually was, when you told him you were proud of him.
Nate smiled as he pressed a soft, quick kiss to your lips before gently guiding your feet back to the ground. He pulled you in tighter, collapsing you into him as he let out a long breath that had been holding his tension for months, caught in the hollows of his chest, finally working its way out into the open air. It had been haunting him, like a ghastly Halloween hangover that dared to last until Christmas. Thankfully, it was December now and Nate felt lighter and freer than he had in months.
“You got what you wanted for Christmas,” you mumbled into his chest, causing his chest to vibrate with laughter.
“Guess I sort of did, yeah.” He kissed the top of your head softly. “Ready to go home?”
“Ready for four days of you and me time?” you teased him a little.
Despite your teasing, his response was entirely genuine, “Been looking forward to it for weeks now.”
Your smile in response to his words stuck with you the entire way home. Nate loved you in actions, but sometimes it was nice to hear words from him as well. You kicked off your shoes at the front door, just in the knick of time before the dogs could come and greet you both.
“Want me to crack a bottle of wine or champagne?” you asked Nate as he dropped his bag by the front door.
“Champagne,” he told you before dropping a kiss to your temple. “We’re celebrating tonight.”
You slid into the kitchen, dogs hot on your heels, as you made a beeline for the champagne in the fridge. You’d slid it in before you left for the game on the chance Nate finally got his hat trick tonight. You hadn’t wanted to drink warm champagne if that was the case and now, holding the cold bottle of champagne and two flutes, you knew you had made the right decision betting on your boyfriend tonight. He rounded the corner into the kitchen a few moments later, game day suit still on, jacket and tie lost back in your shared bedroom.
“Glad you got yourself what you wanted for Christmas, Nate,” you smiled teasingly at him as you started to fuss with the gold foil over the champagne cork.
“Before you pop that,” he told you, reaching a hand out to place over yours as you worked on the foil covering the cork, “I, um, I have something for you.”
“Nate, it’s December twenty-third,” you sighed, setting the bottle down on the cool stone counter. “Can’t it wait a couple of days?”
Nate smiled softly at you, a smile that seemed to mean he knew more than you in this exact moment, “I’ve actually been holding on to this gift for a long time and I think tonight is the perfect night to give it to you. Are you okay if I blow up Christmas a little bit?”
You sighed again and gave Nate a stern look up and down, but the softness in his blue eyes and the innocence in his lazy smile pulled you in and had you nodding in approval. Your nod caused nerves to dance in Nate’s eyes and his hands to slide into his pockets, fidgeting with their contents. He shifted softly from one foot to the other. His eyes dropped to the floor for a moment to watch his feet move before he slowly lifted his head back up in time with a bounce on his heels.
“Okay, here we go,” he mumbled softly to himself.
He cleared his throat before speaking, “I told you I don’t know what I want for Christmas. Hell, I told you that I didn’t know what I wanted for my birthday and that was back in September. The truth is I’ve known what I’ve actually wanted the whole time. The hat trick was nice and all, but it wasn’t really what I wanted.”
“Whatever it is, you could’ve told me,” you chided him a little.
Your words were met with an anxious smile and more shuffling of his feet across the floor. He shook his head softly and let out a tight breath before continuing.
“The only thing I want for Christmas is something you can give me, but you can get it for me,” he told you softly, his voice shaking as he spoke, the nerves in his eyes and his feet and his hands tightening and constricting his voice resonating in his chest.
Nate slowly pulled a hand out of his pocket before purposefully, and painstakingly slowly, dropping down on one knee in front of you. Your hands flew over your mouth on instinct and your eyes clouded over instantly. Nate smiled softly at your reaction, trying desperately not to let what he hoped your actions meant take over and make him too hopeful of your answer to his question to prevent him from asking it. He carefully opened the small black box in his hand to show you your early Christmas present, a beautiful ring nestled among the black velvet inside.
“For Christmas, I’d like for you to say you’ll be my wife,” he continued slowly and as steadily as he could. “The thing I’m most proud of, of everything I’ve ever done, is being your partner. I love you so much more than I say, but I hope I show it enough that you want to sign up for me forever because it’s just you. It’s just you forever, for every single day, every single holiday, every single moment. I want to spend every single Christmas for the rest of my life with you. So, what do you say? Will you be my wife? Will you make my Christmas wish come true?”
The cliches hung thick in his words, but the emotions behind them, the sentiment was so true you could feel it in the very core of who you were. Nathan MacKinnon saw you, faults and gifts and everything in between and loved you in the steadiest, most true way you had ever known. In the light of the Christmas tree, in the home you built together, with the life you build together palatable around you, Nate was asking you to build the rest of it together. You didn’t have to think about your answer.
“Yes, Nate. Yes, I’ll marry you.”
Nerves gave way to relief which even more quickly gave way to joy on Nate’s face as he slowly slid the ring he’d had tucked in the back drawer for months onto your finger where it belonged. Nate let out a long breath at the sight of it finally on your hand before slowly standing up in front of you, his hands reaching out to cup your face gingerly.
“Best early Christmas present ever,” you told him with a wide smile on your face.
He smiled back just as widely and happily as you grinned at him, “Merry Christmas, my future wife.”

What I Feed My Active Dachshunds to Help Keep Them Healthy
I’ve been asked these questions lot over the years:
“What dog food do you recommend for Dachshunds?” “What should I feed my Dachshund to keep them healthy like yours?” “What do you think about food X or Y for Dachshunds?”
For the most part, I’ve also creatively dodged those questions a lot over the years.
You see, every dog is different. Every owner preference is different. Every budget is different.
There isn’t one right food for every dog.
Also, as we’ve found with the recent Hill’s Pet Nutrition recalls, and the potential grain-free dog food – heart health connection, what we think is good for a while can turn out to be not so great after all.
However, I finally decided it was about time I wrote something about what Summit and Gretel eat though. That way I have a place to point people when they ask in the future.
While I’m still not comfortable recommending specific foods for other dogs, I’ve become more comfortable with the idea of sharing what works best for us and letting you make the decision about what is right for your yours.
Note: Some of the links below are affiliate links, which means that I may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you, if you make a purchase.
The Dog Foods That I Feed My Healthy Dachshunds
I’ve fed all forms of dog foods over the years – kibble with grain, kibble without grain, canned “wet” food, pre-made frozen raw food, freeze dried raw food.
Today, no matter what the food type, I primarily choose dog foods that are high in protein.
Protein is important for muscle development, which is really important for active dogs.
Note: High protein works for my dogs. It doesn’t work for all dogs so be sure to check with your vet if you suspect your dog.
Summit and Gretel primarily eat raw dog food now but it’s more of a personal choice.
I give them frozen prepared raw because I’m not interested in learning how to create a balanced diet and making my own raw meals at this time.
However, I do sometimes, for a treat and additional nutrient variety, add fun things to their raw dog food to “dress it up”.
I’m also not a stickler for raw feeding.
I mean, humans don’t eat the same food all of the time. It would make is unhealthy – and, to me, that includes different FORMS of food, not just different brands or sources of protein.
That means, at any given time, Summit and Gretel may be eating a food that is not on this list.
But here are the foods I love and feed the most frequently.
Favorite Frozen Prepared Raw Dog Food for My Dachshunds
Darwin’s Natural Selections
Darwin’s Natural Selections raw dog food is convenient because you can sign up for a subscription and it arrives on your doorstep every 4-6 weeks (your choice) packed in dry ice.
All of their balanced, complete meals – chicken, beef, lamb, turkey, and duck – are made of 75% grass fed or cage-free meat and 25% organic vegetables.
They are also free of gluten, grain, steroids, hormones, and antibiotics.
You can customize your order by choosing the meats you want and the amount of each.
Darwin’s Food can be shipped anywhere in the United States for a $6.50 minimum (shipping costs vary depending on where you are located). If you live in the Seattle or Portland metropolitan areas, you may be in their free home delivery area.
If you’re new to Darwin’s and not sure what or how much to feed you can contact them for a free menu consultation.
Wild Coast Raw
Wild Coast Raw dog food is a “seasonally sourced craft raw food” created with oversight from a veterinarian with 25 years experience.
One of my favorite things about this raw food is that the ingredients are ground but not as small as with most raw foods. You can actually still see chunks of meat in there.
While “flavor” choices can vary by season, their grass-fed beef and free-range turkey meals seem to be available most of the year.
All formulas are made with organic vegetables.
This food is made in Olympia, WA and it appears that it’s only available to purchase in Washington State pet stores.
Steve’s Real Food
Steve’s Real raw dog food is a complete and balanced diet made with grass fed, hormone and antibiotic free meats and poultry.
Steve’s Real Food follows Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (B.A.R.F.) model of 80% Meat/Organ/Bone and 20% Produce.
They source most of the meat and all of the produce from the Northwest.
The meals come in beef, chicken, turkey, turducken, and pork.
You can find Steve’s Real Food at many pet stores around the country.
Nature’s Variety Instinct® Raw
I like Instinct® Raw dog food because it’s high quality and pretty to easy to find in any major city (and some not so major) when we travel.
Their balanced, complete meals are made with 85% real meat and organs and 15% fruits, vegetables and vitamins and minerals.
They use ingredients closest to their natural state like real meat and non-GMO fruits and vegetables.
Their raw meals never include grain, corn, wheat, soy, artificial colors or preservatives.
Meal choices include beef, chicken, and lamb.
You can find Instinct® Raw at many pet stores around the country.
Vital Essentials
Vital Essentials was the first frozen, prepared raw food that I fed Gretel and my previous Dachshund Chester.
Chester was 8 when I made the switch and I saw a huge difference in his energy levels.
That change was likely due to a switch to raw food in general but this Prey Model Raw (PMR) food is unique because it doesn’t contain any fruits or vegetables. Your dog gets all of the nutrients it needs from only meat, organs, and bone.
In the case of Vital Essentials, the ratios are 45% muscle meat, 45% organs and 10% bone content (all from the same protein source).
Vital Essentials raw meat materials are harvested in the U.S.A and they process 100% of our own food in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Meal choices include beef, chicken, duck, rabbit, and turkey.
It’s available in stores around the US.
Favorite Freeze Dried Raw Dog Food for my Dachshunds
There is a disagreement over whether freeze dried “raw” dog food is actually raw. It IS processed and some people claim that the drying process can diminish the benefits of fresh, raw meals.
Personally, I believe that the processing and drying doesn’t make a significant difference in the nutrition, specially if you choose those brands that make an effort to maintain as much of the original nutrients as possible during processing.
However, these foods contain significantly less moisture than raw food so it’s very important to re-hydrate them or at least add a good amount of water to the food when feeding.
Small Batch Freeze Dried Sliders
Small Batch is one of my favorite freeze dried dog foods to use because it’s easier to crumble and rehydrate.
Depending on where you buy this food, it’s either made in a facility in California or Oregon. All ingredients are sourced from those states and/or Washington and Colorado.
Small Batch is made with all-natural, certified, humanely raised and harvested meats that are free of hormones and antibiotics. They try to use certified organic meat whenever possible.
Vegetables and herbs used are certified organic, non-GMO, and free of pesticides.
Meal flavors include beef. chicken, turkey, duck, and lamb.
All of their formulas are 88% beef, 10% produce, 2% supplements (except for the lamb which is 78% lamb, 20% produce, 2% supplements)
Small Batch is available in stores around the US and on Amazon.
BIXBI Rawbble
Rawbble freeze dried dog food comes in little nuggets so you can “feed it just like kibble”, although I still sometimes smash the nuggets a little so they soak up more water (or I just add water to the bowl and let them float on top).
Rawbble is USA made and sourced with 98% meat, bones and organs.
It’s free of grains, gluten, animal meal, hormones, antibiotics, fillers, artificial flavorings or colors, and preservatives.
Meal choices include pasture-fed beef, free-range chicken, free-range duck and wild-caught salmon with free-range chicken.
Rawbble is available at many retailers around the US and on Amazon.
Orijen Freeze Dried
Orijen freeze dried dog food is one of my favorites just because I trust the really high quality of Orijen foods.
They claim that their gentle freeze drying process allows their food to “provide all the benefits of a raw diet in a convenient dry form.”
This is a “Whole Prey” raw food made with 80% meat/game/fish ingredients, 10% vegetables/fruits/botanicals, and 0% grain/potato/tapioca/plant protein concentrates.
It contains no grains or gluten.
Orijen freeze dried food comes in their Original, Regional Red, and Tundra formulas.
It’s available at many locations around the US and and on Amazon.
Favorite Canned Dog Food for My Dachshunds
Have you looked at the canned food options lately? I feel like there are almost more canned options than kibble and there are a bazillion of those.
To keep it simple for myself, I personally prefer pate style foods that are high in protein.
Identity Canned Dog Food
Identity Canned Dog Food stands out to me for a few reasons.
First, it’s one of the few wet dog foods that I’ve found that, in addition to being grain free, contains no potatoes or legumes.
Second, the company is 100% committed to using only the finest quality ingredients.
All of the flavors – grass fed Angus Beef, free-range quail and turkey, free-range prairie pork, free-range NZ lamb, free-range heritage turkey, free-range Cobb Chicken, and free-range Canadian Duck – use responsibly raised/sourced meats that are never frozen before production.
The meats are also 100% free of added hormones and antibiotics and are 100% GMO & BPA free. The food is manufactured in Canada and the company is US family owned.
A moist it’s a moist, limited ingredient pate that can be fed as a complete & balanced meal or as protein-rich topper to kibble or raw dog food.
I order this food from Amazon.
Hound and Gatos
Hound and Gatos came personally recommended to me by a friend who runs a Dachshund rescue in Florida.
It’s made of 100% Animal Protein (no plant protein), contains no fillers or meat by-products, and is manufactured in the USA in USDA-inspected facilities.
It comes in three flavors – Paleolithic Diet, Pork & Pork Liver, Duck.
Hound & Gatos was awarded, “The Most Trusted Pet Foods” by TruthAboutPetFood.com 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017.” It was also included on the Whole Dog Journal approved canned foods list for 4 years.
It’s a pate style grain free canned food that’s a complete meal for all life stages.
I order this food from Amazon.
Instinct Ultimate Protein
Instinct Ultimate Protein is a grain free pate style canned dog food that’s a complete & balanced nutrition from real ingredients to support your dog’s health from puppy to senior.
The meats used in the food are “responsibly sourced” and the food is at least 95% protein (more for some flavors).
It’s made without grain, potato, corn, wheat, soy, carrageenan, artificial colors or preservatives – ingredients known to trigger food sensitivities.
It comes in two flavors – chicken or beef.
This food is available on Amazon and many pet food stores around the country (including Petsmart).
Favorite Dry Kibble for My Dachshunds
Note: These foods are on the “most commonly reported pet food brands named in DCM (heart condition) reports submitted to the FDA” (although lower on the list). See below for more details and my take on that.
Orijen Dry Dog Food
I’ve been a long-time fan of Orijen “Biologically Appropriate & Grain Free” dry dog food.
I don’t stick with just one of their formulas. However, I choose the Regional Red flavor most often.
They also make Original, Tundra, and Six-Fish flavors.
Although we don’t have to use it because Gretel and Summit are so active, I love that Origen makes a high-quality Fit & Trim food.
No matter which of their foods you choose, it’s at least 80% meat/game/fish ingredients, 10% vegetables/fruits/botanicals, and 0% grain/potato/tapioca/plant protein concentrates.
A full 2/3 of their meat ingredients are fresh (refrigerated, without preservatives) or raw (flash-frozen, without preservatives), including the top 10 ingredients.
Zinc is the only added nutrient because Whole Prey ratios of fresh meat (including muscle meat, organs, and cartilage or bone) provide virtually every nutrient your dog needs.
It’s available at many locations around the US and and on Amazon.
Nature’s Variety Instinct Ultimate Protein
Instinct Ultimate Protein Dog Kibble “mirrors the benefits of raw.” Their website says, it’s a kibble “with the highest levels of protein from real meat and unmatched digestibility (compared to other premium natural dog food brands).”
It’s made with up to 2x more real duck and chicken (it only comes in these two flavors) than many other pet food brands and is free of grain, potato, corn, wheat, soy, by-product meal, artificial colors or preservatives.
It does contain guaranteed levels of live, natural probiotics, natural omega oils and antioxidants.
There is a different high-quality formula with less protein (if your dog needs that).
It’s available in many stores around the US and on Amazon.
What About the Recent Grain Grain Free – Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) Connection?
Some people who have seen the foods that I feed my Dachshunds have asked me if I’m worried about Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) or warned me about it.
I’m very aware of the potential grain-free dog food connection to DCM. I’ve been following it since the first stirrings last year.
The issue is very complicated though.
It’s true that more and more dogs are becoming affected by the heart condition DCM.
It’s true that the most likely suspect is related to nutrition. Specifically, a taurine deficiency.
It’s logical that the first place to look for a cause is the kind of food the affected dogs have been eating.
So that is what the FDA has been doing.
There is mounting evidence that the dogs developing DCM have been eating boutique, exotic ingredients, or grain-free – “BEG” – diets high in peas/lentils/potatoes.
There is a theory that somehow those ingredients are interfering with the uptake of taurine from food.
Taurine is an amino acid found primarily in meat. It is important for the function of several body organs, including the heart.
Should I Switch My Dog’s Food from Grain Free?
First, I think it’s important to note that dogs who have been eating grain-free, or BEG, diets and have developed DCM have been eating one single food long-term.
As I’ve stated before, I switch my dog’s food regularly.
My reasoning is that – as blogger friend who is more versed in dog nutrition than I am summed it up – feeding your dog the same thing their whole life can be bad for them (no matter how “good” the food is).
My current stance on the issue is, “Don’t panic and consult with your vet if you have concerns about your dog.”
You can read more about my opinion, and see what I think are the most important articles to read on this issue right now, on our Facebook page.
However, a few main points of the most recent FDA report are:
The current FDA report is just a compilation of dog breed, the dog food they were eating, and a few other details of each case reported to them in the last year or so. It lists facts of the known cases but there are, at their own admission, many, many other factors that could be involved in the heart issues (DCM).
ALL types of dog food (wet, kibble, raw) showed up in their reports at least once but most of the reports came from dogs eating kibble (this could be because a larger number of dogs eat kibble, not necessarily point to kibble as the culprit).
The food brands the FDA calls out are merely a list of foods reported most frequently. The proportions are influenced by several things like how popular the food is (means more people feed it), the income level and preference of the people who submitted reports (they choose to feed these “high quality” foods and can afford it… and can also afford diagnostic testing for DCM), etc.
The FDA is not saying that these foods are PROVEN to be the cause of heart issue in this specific order (and excluding other brands) but they just want you know the facts so you can make an informed decision. In other words, it’s not a statement that the listed foods CAUSED the heart issues, although they may have played a part in influencing it.
The FDA’s FAQ page about the report further clarifies:
It’s important to note that the reports include dogs that have eaten grain-free and grain containing foods and also include vegetarian or vegan formulations. They also include all forms of diets: kibble, canned, raw and home-cooked. Therefore, we do not think these cases can be explained simply by whether or not they contain grains, or by brand or manufacturer.”
At this time, we are not advising dietary changes based solely on the information we have gathered so far. If you have questions or concerns about your dog’s health or its diet, we suggest that you consult your veterinarian.
Anyway, I’m not changing how I feed Gretel and Summit right now. I already do not feed them much kibble, most of the foods I feed them are high in protein and low in carbs (legumes, potatoes, grains), and I rotate their food at least monthly.
What to Do If You Are Concerned About Your Own Dog
If, unlike me, you are immediately concerned about your dog’s health or diet, here are a two things you can do:
Consult with your veterinarian to check the current health of your pet’s heart, check for a taurine deficiency, and discuss your dog’s diet.
Transition your dog’s food (follow these instructions if you do) to something that is lower in peas/lentils/potatoes. Foods to look into would be ones that are primarily protein (organ, meat, bones) and/or contain low glycemic grains.
You can also do more reading on DCM and taurine deficiency in general.
So there you have it. These are the foods that I have deemed high quality for my fit and healthy Dachshunds (although, like I said, they occasionally eat other dog foods too).
Leave a comment below if you have a question about these foods or our feeding routine in general.

One of the first topics that we need to explore is our digestive tract. Each step of digestion has its own function. Chewing, for example, increases the surface area of food particles (physical digestion) so that the enzymes in the mouth can start breaking the nutrients down (chemical digestion). Review the two links and complete the lab assignment stated below.

Week 1 Assignment:\
Part 1
There are several parts to this iLab. Part 1 consists of listing all of the parts of the digestive system with either a list or photo. Many people take a screenshot and use it for Part 1. Feel free to also list the parts as well if you cannot figure out how to take a screenshot.
Part 2
Part 2 technically consists of two parts. The first one includes describing the location of each body part. For example, the appendix is located on the right side of the body under the ascending colon. Another way to do this part would be to write out the parts and put a location/description next to it. The second part of Part 2 for this section is to describe the manner in which you will retain the information of where each body part is located. An example would be, “I will remember the location of each body part by reviewing the photo and memorizing each location.” Some classmates develop interesting methods of memorizing where all of the parts are located, like using mnemonics. Feel free to be creative.
Part 3
For Part 3, which is in a Word document (or the same document that you have been using for Parts 1 and 2), please take the overall categories (mouth, small intestine, esophagus, stomach, and large intestine) and label them with the appropriate mechanisms that occur in each of them (propulsion, absorption, chemical digestion, and mechanical digestion). Please remember that each digestive system part mentioned above may be involved in more than one of the mechanisms.
Part 4
For Part 4, please define each mechanism (propulsion, absorption, chemical digestion, and mechanical digestion) with two to three sentences each.

Fast Food Menu Creation Overview
For this assignment, you have been asked to explore the nutritional value of menu items at a local fast-food restaurant. Using the available menu items, plan two meals: the healthiest meal possible and the unhealthiest healthy meal possible. Both meals should include an entrée, a side, a beverage, and dessert. In a Word document, please answer and discuss the following questions.
Deliverables
1. Describe the healthy meal that you have created from the fast-food restaurant using the nutritional value of menu items.
1. Name the restaurant, and then write a nutritional analysis of the meal you have created. (Explain all of the nutrients found in the meal, like carbs, protein, fat, and some essential vitamins and minerals.)
2. Discuss your reaction to the analysis–make sure to explain why you feel the way you do about this meal. For example, if your meal is composed primarily of fat, discuss that point; if your meal supplies a lot of sugar per serving, discuss that as well. Please also remember to link excess or limited amounts of nutrients with diseases or the potential for disease (too much fat may put you at risk for heart disease, not enough calcium may not support bone health, etc.). Please make sure this section is as detailed as possible.
3. How will this information affect your future food choices? Make sure to explain why you will or will not eat this meal again, and support your answer with the information found in the above sections.

McDonald’s Canada to start buying ‘sustainable’ beef
TORONTO — McDonald’s Canada says it will be the first Canadian company to acquire beef that is “certified sustainable” according to standards outlined by the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB).
The chain says more than 20 million of its Angus burgers will be sourced according to the CRSB standards over the next 12 months.
Those standards include ensuring animals have adequate feed and access to drinking water and that they endure minimal stress and pain.
Farmer and ranchers must also manage grasslands and grazing in a way that maintains or improves soil health and protects watersheds.
McDonald’s Canada says it gets 100 per cent of the beef for its hamburgers from Canadian ranches and farms, primarily in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
This move comes about a month after the chain began selling bagels at all of its Canadian locations to woo breakfast diners.
“Consumers are increasingly inquisitive about the food they’re eating and want to know it was produced in a socially responsible, economically viable and environmentally sound manner,” said Cherie Copithorne-Barnes, a rancher and chairwoman of the CRSB.
“As we all strive to make continuous improvements, it’s important to recognize achievements made along the way.”

Ranking the best protein for weight loss of 2018
Protein powder is an incredibly useful tool for weight loss because it can help you drop body fat, retain lean body mass, and even maintain weight you’ve lost already on a diet.
Protein powder has a number of useful biological effects that make it easier to drop fat and retain lean muscle, and it functions well as a meal replacement because it fills you up while kicking your metabolism into high gear.
If you are trying but struggling to lose weight, adding a protein powder to your weight loss routine might be just what you need. Our researchers have ranked the best protein powders for weight loss so you can get the best results possible.
1. Left Coast Performance Bone Broth Protein
Click here for the lowest price on Amazon
If you follow a paleo, keto, or low carb diet to lose weight, Left Coast Performance Bone Broth Protein is one of the best choices out there.
It’s in line with the restrictive requirements of the keto and paleo diets, and this protein derived from beef bones has a robust, comprehensive amino acid profile. Because of that, it’s more effective at increasing your body’s metabolic rate than a plant-based protein.
The chocolate flavor uses natural flavoring, stevia, monk fruit, and a tiny bit of cane sugar—but don’t worry, the sugar content is less than a gram per serving.
2. Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein
Click here for the lowest price on Amazon
Optimum Nutrition makes a whey protein that is one of the standard-bearers of the industry. It uses a blend of whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, and whey peptides, along with both natural and artificial flavors.
The amino acid profile is robust, and it tastes great, making it a good go-top option if you can’t stand the taste of a normal protein shake.
3. Fitmiss Delight
Click here for the lowest price on Amazon
Fitmiss Delight is formulated especially for women looking to lose weight. It has the added bonus of a comprehensive mixture of “superfood” fruit and vegetable extracts like red currant, mango seed, pomegranate, and blood orange.
Combine this with a high-dose shot of vitamin B12 and four different sources of protein and you’ve got a very solid protein powder that really shines as a breakfast or lunch meal replacement.
This protein powder will leave you fueled up, energized, and ready to get to work, all with only three grams of carbohydrates.
4. Manitoba Harvest Organic Hemp Pro
Click here for the lowest price on Amazon
Hemp protein is a great way to leverage the weight loss benefits of protein alongside the benefits of dietary fiber, another all-natural supplement that is incredibly useful when it comes to weight loss.
Hemp seeds, from which this protein powder is derived, are packed with protein and fiber, meaning that there’s about over a gram of fiber for every gram of protein in this supplement.
The certified organic, Canadian-grown source is an added bonus: it means this product is far less likely to contain traces of harmful pesticides.
5. Garden of Life Raw Organic Protein
Click here for the lowest price on Amazon
When it comes to using a protein powder as a meal replacement while on a diet to lose weight, Garden of Life offers a number of distinct advantages.
First, its combination of pea protein, rice protein, and a number of grain sprouts means it’s got a complete amino acid profile.
Second, these grain sprouts mean there’s a lot more in the way of vitamins and minerals than what you’d normally find in a protein powder.
With only two grams of carbohydrates and zero grams of sugar, it’s definitely well-suited for weight loss.
6. Vega Protein and Greens
Click here for the lowest price on Amazon
Vega Proteins and Greens is a plant-based protein powder that’s a good way to address one concern of using a protein shake as a meal replacement, which is missing out on the nutrients in “greens”—vegetables like kale and spinach.
Vega Protein and Greens uses pea protein powder as its protein and adds in kale, spinach, and broccoli extracts, as well as stevia as an all-natural sweetener, making it a solid choice if you are looking for a plant-based protein for weight loss.
7. Orgain Organic Protein Powder
Click here for the lowest price on Amazon
As one of the best vegan protein powders on the market, this is a great weight loss option for people looking to avoid animal or dairy-derived protein sources.
The fact that it uses protein from peas, brown rice, and chia seeds helps ameliorate one of the issues of plant-based proteins: namely, their somewhat limited amino acid profile.
Its organic certification is great to see, and Orgain also includes a number of plant-based creamers and sweeteners to improve the taste and help the powder blend up easily in a shake or a smoothie.
The erythritol non-caloric sweetener might be a turn-off, and it’d be better if Orgain opted for stevia or monk fruit instead, but aside from that, it’s hard to find faults in this protein powder.
8. Ora So Lean & So Clean
Click here for the lowest price on Amazon
Ora makes a plant-based protein powder whose protein content comes from peas and sprouted rice.
The defining feature of this protein powder is its inclusion of superfood extracts from fruits and vegetables, as well as a selection of enzymes that help you digest and absorb the nutrients in this protein powder more effectively. It’s a decent choice when it comes to plant-based protein for weight loss.
9. Kiss my Keto Protein Powder
Click here for the lowest price on Amazon
Kiss my Keto is, as its name suggests, a great protein powder for those following a ketogenic diet. It includes collagen peptides as its source of protein, and MCT oil as its source of fat.
These are combined in a 2:1 ratio, so you’re getting a substantial amount of fat per unit protein. This is great if you are intentionally shooting for a high fat diet, but other users would be better served by getting a protein powder that has more protein per serving. The MCT oil necessarily lowers the protein concentration by weight.
10. Less Naked Whey
Click here for the lowest price on Amazon
Less Naked Whey is great from a purist’s perspective. It uses only a few all-natural ingredients; namely, whey protein concentrate, coconut sugar, and cocoa powder. This means a solid amino acid profile, great taste, and no artificial ingredients or non-caloric sweeteners.
The only downside? The coconut sugar adds a non-negligible amount of sugar: five grams for every 25 grams of protein. Many people on a diet would rather opt for a protein powder that’ slower in its sugar content.
Benefits and side effects of protein for weight loss
Protein is being recognized as an increasingly important tool when it comes to weight loss. Supplementing your diet with extra protein has a number of biological effects that are very useful for accelerating your weight loss, and moreover, influencing what you lose (muscle versus fat) in a beneficial way.
In some sense, it’s not weight that’s the problem, it’s fat. Protein powder helps you drop body fat while preserving muscle mass, and moreover, high protein diets are easier to stick to than other diets for weight loss.
This alone would make protein useful, but when combined with its other effects, makes it downright essential for optimizing your weight loss program.
We’ll dive into the science behind why supplemental protein is so useful for losing weight.
Benefits
Protein fills you up and makes you less hungry. Since the success of high-protein diets like the Atkins diet, scientists have tried to uncover the biological mechanisms behind why these diets seem to work.
Two primary benefits have been attributed to high protein diet: increased satiety and increased thermogenesis, according to research out of Harvard University’s School of Public Health (1).
Satiety is the feeling of fullness that you get after a large meal which makes you disinterested in eating more. The high amino acid content of protein creates a hormonal response in your body that creates a feeling of satiety.
The overall effect is that you’ll be less likely to overeat at your next meal, and your overall caloric intake will go down.
A high protein intake increases your caloric expenditure. Increased thermogenesis is the other main benefit of protein for weight loss.
Thermogenesis is an upregulation of your body’s metabolic rate, and while all macronutrients (carbs, fat, and protein) create thermogenesis, protein is by far the most effective.
A 2002 study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition demonstrated that protein intake creates twice as much thermogenesis as an equivalent caloric amount of carbohydrates or fat (2).
Once you’ve lost weight, protein can help you keep it off. This was the finding of a 2004 study published in the International Journal of Obesity (3).
A 50 gram per day increase in protein intake among subjects who had completed a weight loss program resulted in a 50% decrease in the amount of fat mass regained during the subsequent three months after the dieting program was completed, compared to a control group which did not supplement their dietary protein intake.
Protein helps you lose body fat, not muscle. The specific effect of protein on body fat is extremely useful, and this finding has been replicated in studies on weight loss, too.
Supplemental protein helps you lose more fat and maintain muscle mass (4). This means you are on track for a physique which is both leaner and stronger.
Side effects
As far as weight loss supplements go, protein powder is probably the safest one out there. It’s just a concentrated version of the protein you’d get in typical foods like milk, eggs, or peas.
Observational studies on bodybuilders, who consume a tremendous amount of protein every day, have not noted any harmful effects even of these very high protein intake levels (5).
If you are lactose intolerant or have a dairy allergy, you’ll likely want to opt for a lactose-free protein powder instead of a dairy-derived protein powder, but fortunately there are plenty of great options that don’t rely on a dairy source.
Some research indicates that people who are obese and already have type two diabetes or kidney disease may want to consult with a doctor before increasing their dietary protein intake, since there is the potential for high protein intake to hamper kidney function and increase blood pressure, which could increase risk for heart disease.
However, for people who want to lose weight who are otherwise healthy, protein has no risks (6).
Recommended dose
To achieve most of the weight loss benefits of protein, you should supplement your typical diet with 50 grams of supplemental protein per day.
Keep in mind that this number pertains to the actual protein content, which varies based on the exact type of protein you’re using. Bone broth protein, for example, is usually over 90% protein, so just a few more grams (about 55, to be precise) of protein powder is necessary to hit the recommended dose.
At the other extreme, hemp protein powder is usually only 50% protein by weight, thanks to its high dietary fiber content. As a result, you’d need to double this amount to 100 grams of hemp protein powder.
The satiety-inducing effects of protein powder suggest that the best time to take protein is in the morning or the afternoon, instead of in the evening or at night.
This way, you can make the most of the fullness-inducing effects of protein and consume fewer calories throughout the day.
Beyond this, many high protein diets will far exceed the 50 gram threshold, which is okay.
This number comes from clinical trials that intend to bump up dietary protein intake from about 15% of total calories to 18%, but a high protein diet contains substantially more protein than this. As noted above, for healthy people, even very high protein intakes are quite safe.
Recap
Supplemental protein is a great way to augment your weight loss program, thanks to its ability to make you feel full and satiated, as well as its beneficial effects on increasing your body’s metabolic rate, which leads to greater overall energy expenditure.
The best proteins for weight loss have a complete amino acid profile, which helps them increase thermogenesis to a greater extent than plant proteins derived from a single protein source.
During periods of weight loss and weight loss maintenance, protein powder also helps you retain lean body mass and lose body fat. The ultimate result is a leaner and more athletic physique, which is something everyone can aspire to.

Happy 60th Birthday, Pizza Hut!
In celebration of its birthday, Pizza Hut is introducing a new pizza that combines two of the brand’s most iconic menu items into one great new innovation called Double Cheesy Crust Pan Pizza.
The new, limited-time pizza pays homage to Stuffed Crust and Original Pan by baking a ring of cheese just inside the unmistakably golden edge of Pizza Hut Pan crust. An additional layer of toasted parmesan is baked on the crust edge and the pizza is topped off with a blend of parmesan and oregano.
“In addition to winning over pizza fans with innovations like the Double Cheesy Crust Pan Pizza, Pizza Hut has also become part of the fabric of American pop culture,” said Zipporah Allen, CMO, Pizza Hut. “Whether it’s making an appearance in iconic movies or changing the way we order food by being the first pizza ordered online, Pizza Hut has proven time and time again that No One Out Pizzas the Hut.”
Did you know that Pizza Hut:
Made appearances in more than 19 movies
Created the nation’s largest reading-incentive program with BOOK IT!
Was the first pizza delivered to the White House
Was the first physical good ever purchased via the internet
Started with one store in Wichita, Kan., in 1958, opened in part thanks to a $600 loan from “mom” to the founding brothers Frank and Dan Carney
Choreographed the longest pizza delivery in history, sending an order via rocket to the International Space Station
Set a World Record for highest pizza delivery to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro
For many years was the largest global purchaser of kale
Created one-of-a kind Pie Tops sneakers that order pizza with a push of a button

Earlier this year, Pizza Hut released the Pie Tops II, Bluetooth-enabled sneakers that order pizza and pause the TV with a push of a button. Recently, the company also launched voice command ordering, the first pizza tracker that includes text messaging and Hut Rewards, the only national pizza loyalty program with a faster way to free pizza through points for every dollar spent on food online.
“Over the past 60 years, Pizza Hut has become so much more than just a pizza company,” said Allen. “We are proud of the achievements made in the last 60 years and are looking forward to what the future holds.”

The Dapper Doughnut Debuts
Beavers Coffee + Donuts is re-branding to The Dapper Doughnut, the name of their franchise company, and aggressively rolling out new locations nationwide. Childhood friends who shared an entrepreneurial spirit, strong worth ethic and passion for food, Gabriel Wiesen and James Nuccio started Beavers Coffee + Donuts in 2011. Making fresh, fried to order mini donuts and serving locally roasted coffee on Chicago’s first cooking food truck, the pair grew their business in Chicago to include five additional food trucks and a permanent location inside the Chicago French Market.
Over the past year, they have opened up a new flagship store inside the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, and started franchising their made to order mini donut concept, which has turned into a runawayhit. To date, they have more than 30 franchise locations currently awarded and many more coming on board each month.
“We put it all on the line, and are so blessed with what has happened,” said Wiesen. “We are thrilled to have the ability to share our success with so many others who are also chasing their dream of owning a small business.”
In less than seven years, the company evolved from a “garage-born” startup, to an award-winning brand that franchisees want to be part of. Today, the franchise is available as traditional stand-alone storefronts, food trucks, and kiosks.
“Jimmy and I have poured our hearts and soul into this business- from physically doing every element of the operations when we first launched, to leading a staff of more than 50 currently. You might say Jimmy and I have donuts in our blood and coffee running through our veins,” added Wiesen. “We are incredibly proud of the Beavers Coffee + Donuts brand and all that our team has achieved. But as we grow further beyond Chicago we are adapting and appealing to a new national audience. We know our reputation for amazing donuts and customer service will follow us as we transition to The Dapper Doughnut, and we could not be more excited for what is to come.”
The Dapper Doughnut locations started opening outside of Chicago beginning roughly a year ago with stores currently open or in development in Reno, Dallas, Houston, Creve Couer, Missouri, Cincinnati, Nashville, Atlanta, New Stanton, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Boston, Denver, and Greenville, South Carolina with their flagship store at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and another flagship store to open this summer at the Fulton Center located in the financial district of Manhattan.
“Our goal, that we are on pace to reach, is 100+ franchise territories awarded by the end of 2018. We have also begun discussions with several large franchise development companies who are interested in potentially adding hundreds of locations both nationally and internationally this year. Those deals aside, we are experiencing tremendous growth, and we are honored and ready to work with so many great franchise partners,” said Wiesen.
MR.SUB Turns 50
The first in its category in Canada to introduce RWA meats, MR.SUB is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Since 1968, when MR.SUB first opened its doors in Yorkville, Toronto, it has been serving sandwiches, to over 270 locations across Canada and internationally. MR.SUB is now introducing meats raised without antibiotics to the menu.
“We are constantly evolving and remain dedicated to providing Canadians with fresh, quality ingredients, which is why we are excited to share that MR.SUB will now be serving our most popular proteins all raised without antibiotics,” said Jason Brading, Brand Vice President, MR.SUB. “As we look back at the past 50 years and the opportunities that we’ve had to share our meals with Canadians, it’s easy to see that we did not get here alone. We’re dedicating our 50th anniversary to all who helped us grow and made our restaurants their home away from home. We’ve made the food, but it has been Canadians who have made MR.SUB, and we are proud to demonstrate our sincere appreciation by offering healthier choice options to our guests, like our new raised without antibiotics line up.”
MR.SUB will be the first National sub sandwich restaurant in the QSR industry in Canada to serve meats raised without antibiotics, including turkey, salami, ham and luncheon meat.

CMA Wins Organic Certification
Chicago Meat Authority (CMA) is certified to begin producing cuts of pork with the option to produce other meats such as beef and poultry for customers who want organic products.
Chicago Meat Authority has been certified by MOSA as a handler under the USDA National Organic Program. As a handler, CMA is required to have a program in place to ensure that organic products remain pure and are not cross-contacted with non-organic products or prohibited substances.
“We are delighted to provide the organic option to our customers,” said Lisa Rabe, director of technical assurance at CMA. “Our customers are requesting organic meats and clean labeling. We are looking at ways to provide all these potential items in the coming months. We are testing different marinations and other quality control options to satisfy all of our customers’ needs.”
As a certified handler, CMA stores organic raw material and finished products separately from non-organic products in keeping with the company’s rigorous quality control procedures. All procedures and processes are monitored and verified to ensure that all requirements are followed.
CMA currently has been certified to produce organic pork butts and picnics. To produce beef and poultry, MOSA can amend CMA’s certification to include those proteins and any other pork products the company wants to produce.
Products are certified USDA organic when they are produced using exclusively organic methods containing only organic ingredients. The organic requirements include the collection of information on the history of every animal including the breed history, veterinary care and feed plus the animals must be raised on certified organic land that is not subject to most synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, sewage sludge or genetic engineering for at least three years and animals must have outdoor access.
Organic farms tend to be smaller than so-called factory farms and farmers and ranchers have to manage their herds for longer times before slaughter because they do not use synthetic growth hormones or antibiotics. While all of these factors add to the cost of each product produced, consumers have shown a willingness to pay a premium for food that is grown and produced according to the USDA National Organic Program.
Since 1990, the Midwest Organic Services Association says the organic food industry has grown by more than 20% per year. In 2014, organic sales reached $39 billion and represented five percent of all food sold in the United States. Americans increasingly are showing more of an awareness and interest in adding organic food to their diets. Approximately 70 percent buy organic food occasionally and nearly 25 percent buy some organic food every week.
Chicago Meat Authority began in 1990, encompasses 80,000 square feet and produces sales of $125 million per year. The company sells to the hotel, restaurant and institutional markets in addition to meat purveyors and multi-unit regional and national chains. CMA also specializes in custom cuts for further processors including grinding operations, deli manufacturers and the meat snacks market. The company employs 200 specialty butchers who customize meat for selective chefs.
City Harvest Commemorates 35th Anniversary
This year, City Harvest commemorates a major milestone: 35 years of fighting hunger and food insecurity across New York’s five boroughs. The organization rescues nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste, and redirects it to help feed the nearly 1.3 million New Yorkers, including one in five children, who struggle daily to put meals on their tables.
Since December 1982, the organization has rescued and delivered more than 600 million pounds of food, and this year alone, will rescue 59 million pounds of food, delivering it to 500 soup kitchens, food pantries and other community food programs across the five boroughs. By redirecting nutritious food from farms, grocers, restaurants, manufacturers and farmers’ markets to New Yorkers in need, City Harvest has created an unprecedented way to address food waste and hunger. This “neighbor-helping-neighbor” model has been replicated across the country and around the world, from Houston, Texas to Athens, Greece.
City Harvest’s work has always focused on serving vulnerable populations through pioneering solutions that also foster community engagement. When its first Executive Director Helen verDuin Palit was eating a potato skins appetizer at a local restaurant, she saw the practical value discarded potato insides could have in the soup kitchen where she was volunteering at the time. After speaking with the chef, verDuin Palit got the restaurant to donate 30 gallons of cooked potatoes. In that defining moment, City Harvest—not to mention the simple but revolutionary idea of food rescue—was born.
“New York is a city that has so much, and it is unthinkable that so many of our neighbors do not have enough food for themselves and their families,” said current City Harvest Chief Executive Officer Jilly Stephens. “Nearly half of all households in our city don’t earn enough income to make ends meet. Many New Yorkers we serve have homes and jobs. In one of the most expensive cities in the country, it’s not easy to pay fixed expenses like rent, utilities, childcare, and transportation—and still have enough to put food on the table. City Harvest was founded by neighbors helping neighbors, and that principle will always remain at the heart of our mission.”
Adapting to and evolving with the needs of New York City’s diverse, ever-changing, and growing population has been central to City Harvest’s history—in good times, and in bad. From distributing hot meals to first responders in the weeks immediately following 9/11, to quickly delivering more than one million pounds of additional food when families were struggling during the 2008 financial collapse, to providing seven million pounds of relief food in response to Superstorm Sandy, City Harvest has helped New Yorkers through some of our darkest hours. The organization also stepped up to aid in hurricane relief efforts in Houston, Florida and Puerto Rico this past year, sending food and supplies to neighbors in need across the nation.
Through the Healthy Neighborhoods initiative, City Harvest has become a model for how to meet immediate food needs while also promoting wellness and the prevention of diet-related illnesses. The organization works hand-in-hand with communities in need through innovative programs such as Mobile Markets, which bring free, fresh fruits and vegetables to low-income communities, and nutrition education workshops, which help New Yorkers of all ages use fresh produce and create health-oriented dishes.
“Thanks to City Harvest, people in my neighborhood have access to fresh produce and food – especially fresh vegetables that they can’t afford in the supermarket,” said Belinda Ebanks, a participant in City Harvest’s Mobile Market in Queens. “City Harvest encourages people to eat fresh fruit and vegetables as opposed to canned, or not eating them at all. City Harvest means we have food to feed our families.”
As City Harvest marks 35 years, it is stronger than ever before, thanks to the support of thousands of volunteers, food donors, individual and corporate donors, restaurant and chef partners, soup kitchens, food pantries, and community partners who work together to ensure that all New Yorkers, no matter who they are or where they come from, have access to nutritious food.
