'Ello 'ello all youse Critters! Thanks for showing up for the third entry in my overseas adventure journal. This is about the second day of my adventures around Prague.
Now, for some unknown reason, Lark decided it would be fun to get up before it was light out and head off to catch dawn on the Charles Bridge (not Charlie's bridge, or so Lark tells me).
Luckily she was right and it was a pretty magical sight to see, otherwise I would've been plotting my midnight revenge.
We even found the Old Town Square to be practically empty, so my little voice probably carried all the way across the square. I do hope I did wake someone up heh heh heh.
Then we took a trip to the countryside to a Chateau owned by one of the oldest noble Czech families.
Problem is, they had bloody birds there that would've likely taken me for a snack and torn me apart (not that I'd be very tasty). Now we can't have that, so I hid away for most of the rest of the day trying to recover from the heart attack of one of them big ones nearly seeing me.
Lark had some more adventures in the afternoon/evening without me, and then we're swiftly reaching the end of our time in Prague.
I hope youse all have a wonderful day wherever youse are, tata for now!

Belle Revolte by Linsey Miller
Goodreads Rating: 3.6⭐
My Rating: 4⭐
Page Count: 384
~~
**I was gifted a physical ARC from the publisher. This has not had any affect on my review.**
Content warnings, according to Linsey Miller herself: The book does feature sibling deaths (on and off the page), executions (beheading), references to child neglect and abuse, and discussions of drowning. The book also contains violence; murder; gore (sometimes in minor detail but no further); and medical neglect, abuse, and violence. When I picked this book up in December 2019, I was ecstatic to read it! I’d received an e-ARC of Mask of Shadows from Netgalley and pre-ordered the hardback when halfway thru. When I started this book, I wanted to love it just as much! Unfortunately, the very beginning of the book were a slog and I put it down after the first 28 pages [then January hit & i had other books to read for college]. Determined to provide a review for the first physical ARC I’ve ever received, I picked this book up again, from where I’d left off. 10 pages further, this book started walking and halfway through it hit the ground running and did not stop!
I adored the characters; the protagonists and the other main characters. Both Emilie and Annette are stubborn and strong-minded and I loved it. Their relationships felt very organic, both the platonic and the romantic ones. The organizing of the rebellion (the placement of the ‘Laurels’ as they were called) was smart, tactical. The way Miller organized the ideas of this book, the way the king covered up & broke the rebellion’s communication was brilliant. The people who took the fall as Laurel was shocking, one more than the other, though it was definitely intended to be that way, and I feel like I should’ve thought more about one of the character’s reasons for why they couldn’t possibly be the Laurel. I felt Miller covered that base pretty well! Royale Nicole’s facade was well-done; vague but not out of place when considering the other girl got the same sort of vague backstory. Sometimes the wording of the writing itself was confusing, and I had to read a section a few times before I understood what was being said or implied. Sometimes, when switching POV, the setting wasn’t mentioned and it took a few paragraphs for it to come up– this was annoying, considering partway through the book, one POV was constantly on the move. I adore Emilie’s personality, how she knows her flaws & shortcomings & sometimes they helped her, and sometimes they screwed her over. She felt like a very real person, and made for an interesting protagonist. “I don’t hate you, you know. Not anymore. I always trusted you, but you were so…” “Bitter?” I offered up. “Most people call me stubborn, but only when they want to be polite. If they don’t want to be, they’re insufferable. Emilie grew up privileged while Annette grew up dirt poor (she ate dirt when she was six because there was nothing else to eat). Annette has thick skin & uses her temporary position as comte (due to posing as Emilie) to fight back in the little ways. Annette, having taken Emilie’s place in finishing school to learn the midnight arts, refuses to fall in line with classism in her bookkeeping class. "The point of living in a society is taking part in society. We make sure roads and bridges are well cared for, but not the people who need them? Not the people building them? Not the people doing all the work for me?” “You already pay them.” Bisset sighed. “The order of the world is as it is, and I don’t know why you are so hung up on this aspect of your education.” […] “I don’t know how to explain that I care about other people’s well-being.” I got in trouble, of course. I adored the way Charles was introduced, and his relationship with Emilie. The way he told Emilie he’s trans, how it was worded, was done so carefully so as not to be transphobic while still being very clear what he was saying. Emilie also acknowledges how “foolish” she was earlier on in the book for misunderstanding a somewhat odd (in her eyes) question’s implications. And how little she knew of the world outside of her town’s bubble. He laughed softly, but his body tensed. “When I was born, the physician and my parents assumed I was female. I am not. I have always been more dawn than dusk.” Annette’s words– so similar, so long ago– came back to me. She had been asking if I was a lady, and I hadn’t understood, had never heard the words or thought on them. How isolated I had been. How foolish. Annette bringing up her asexuality was done in such a way that I could personally feel her anxiety and fear at possibly being rejected. Her love interest’s positive reaction (stating this in case anyone was worried about that) made me relax and glad that this wasn’t going to be one of THOSE books where it’s an issue. Her words when responding were also very profound: Spoiler quote: “Last person I liked didn’t think you could have romance without sex.” That I was obligated. “We can,” [she] said. “We are our own, and we will define what our love is.” CAN MORE BOOKS BE THIS PROFOUND ABOUT LOVE PLEASE??? Both Annette & Emilie’s positions in the epilogue don’t feel at all out of place, as they showed interest in both those areas before the Big Change hit. Also the change between Emilie & her mother in the epilogue– I felt this was handled so well! I liked how they left the boxes closed. It felt far more realistic than going “welp we did it! no more worries about this!” because that would have been a shit ending. I’m not usually into books that read like historical fiction (it’s high fantasy but has that historical fiction vibe) but this surprised me. Overall, it was a great read! I definitely recommend it if you like historical fiction, high fantasy, magic, rebellion, or politics.

Prague, the picturesque capital city of the Czech Republic, is a place that had long been on my travel bucket list – and I finally went to see it this week! Riley and I were only there for a few days (with Riley working for a couple of those) but we managed to cram a lot into 24 hours of exploring this iconic city together.
Among the more famous historical sights, there is a particular modern place of interest worth visiting, the Nationale Nederlanden building or “Dancing House” (click on map below to enlarge). This was our first stop on our tour of the city, and only a short walk from the apartment we were staying in. The building itself contains office spaces, a gallery and restaurant, with a terrace on top from which you can observe the whole city. However, you can admire the bizarre architecture from the exterior and get that “leaning tower of Pisa” photo opportunity, pretending to dent the building with your own fist or foot.
From there, we walked north along the river to the old town, stopped in at a “fill your own bag” sweet shop (of which there are a few around), and paused in the Old Town Square – something that looks right out of a fairy tale and is a must-see. We were fortunate enough to experience Prague coming to the end of their tourist season so the place wasn’t overly heaving with tourists. If you went in June/July time, however, I think it would be a very different story.
If you’re looking for something a little different (and, happily, free) to experience in the town, then head to the Prague City Hall. Inside is a little hidden gem in the form of a Paternoster elevator. Now, you might be thinking, what on earth would make an elevator remotely interesting (it’s the little things in life, right?). Well, this particular 20th century elevator is doorless and it doesn’t stop or slow down. You don’t see many of these around anymore, having being banned due to safety concerns, but they were once fairly common in Europe and remain a lot of fun. For those brave enough, ride the elevator all the way to the bottom (or top) where it suddenly gets quite dark, shakes, and rumbles as it slides sideways, continuing on its infinite loop.
You’ll find these lifts if you turn right as you enter the City Hall, and follow the hallway round to the back. Alternatively, enter through the rear of the building and you’ll be faced with the lifts straight ahead. Well worth 10 minutes of your time having a go on this if you’re in the area.
Rear of the City Hall
Our next stop was to try some of Prague’s Chimney Cakes, or Trdelník. For this we headed to Good Food Coffee and Bakery on a narrow street off Karlova in the Old Town. The snack itself is made from a rolled, sweet dough wrapped round a stick that is then grilled, cooled and filled with things such as ice cream or whipped cream. You’ll be spoiled for choice but there is an array to match your Instagram feed. I tried the Chimney Devil with activated carbon ice-cream and coconut – going for appearance over taste was probably a regrettable choice but I did get some nice snaps. Maybe go for the Chocolate or Raspberry options if you’d like to enjoy your cake as well as Instagram it.
We then crossed the historic Charles Bridge before ending up by the “Piss Sculpture”. Installed in 2004 by Czech artist David Černý. This odd statue shows two men peeing into the outline of the Czech Republic. Perhaps even more odd, the sculpture is interactive – you’ll notice the hips of the men and their members moving to change the direction of the flow of water. If it tickles your fancy, there’s a phone number near by (or you can find it online) and you can text in a message for the men to write out in the water with their “pee”.
After enjoying a refreshing Aperol Spritz in a local cafe, we then headed up the slope to the palace/castle complex for a wander round outside and to take in one of the most stunning view points overlooking the city, found here, right by Starbucks:
We headed back to our apartment from there, swinging by the John Lennon Wall before going out for dinner at the Terasa U Prince rooftop terrace – a beautiful place to spend any amount of time overlooking the Old Town whilst enjoying a meal or drinks. From the desert menu, I’d highly recommend the Zesty Lemon Sorbet with optional vodka to finish off the evening.
Tourist Tips
Avoid getting a taxi anywhere at all costs, especially to and from the airport as drivers charge a small fortune and will even then likely bump the price up knowing you’re a tourist – expecting you to be none the wiser! Our primary method of getting about (besides our own legs) was Uber – well worth downloading the app if you haven’t already for your travels. We were able to get around for less than half the cost of a normal taxi this way. For a trip from the airport to town, we were quoted 800 czech koruna (which is around £28) for a 30 minute ride whereas our Uber only cost us about £12 for the same trip!
Be prepared for vendors trying to get more money out of you. Unfortunately this happened on numerous occasions to us (and friends). Asking for a hot dog from street vendors only to find they’ve just added 100Kč claiming that the price is different than the one on the board for no apparent reason, or adding an extra beer to your bill that you didn’t order, when out with friends, hoping you wouldn’t notice. Fair enough – these could be innocent mistakes – but we saw it happen once too often, so it’s worth being aware of.
The city can be viewed at its finest at dawn or dusk. The sun casts a beautiful glow on the city as it rises especially, plus, you’ll find the town much quieter and the streets free of people for some stunning shots. If you can get your self somewhere in view of Charles Bridge looking east – even better!
Be aware of scams and pickpockets. Like with most European cities, pick pockets can be rife in heavy tourist areas so watch your belongings when you’re out and about. Avoid currency exchange places too as these have hidden commissions and hardly ever exchange with the rate advertised (see this website for more information on exchange scams)
Lastly, take the time to just wander. Prague is a beautiful city, with many hidden gems and viewpoints to be discovered. Its one of the cheaper European cities to enjoy too, and coupled with elegant architecture, and delicious food and drink, it is a fantastic destination for anyone’s travel bucket list!

Prague
About an hour into our journey from Dresden, we went through a tunnel and came out the other side with the feeling that we'd come into a very different place. The rolling green fields turned into tall hills/mountains (there was some debate on this subject) dotted with red roofed houses. We checked our phones and sure enough, both of us had texts that we had just come into the Czech Republic. Another hour or so later, we arrived in Prague. Before getting off the coach we only got brief glimpses of the city so couldn't really get a feel for it. I had to get some money out and pop to the toilet before we set off for the hostel. We were completely befuddled by the currency when the ATM dispensed 1000 crown notes and again when there was a 10 crown charge for the toilets. We didn't have anything small enough so had to use euros, this translated into a 50 cent charge so we then knew we weren't being totally ripped off. After negotiating our way in and out of the toilet via the turnstile with our big rucksacks, we were ready to get to the hostel. It was right on the other side of the city, but we set off through some quiet, little streets. It wasn't until we reached the river that we got our first proper sight of the city and the castle. With the bright sunshine and clear blue sky, it was really beautiful and we couldn't wait to get exploring. Across the bridge, we wiggled through some little streets, dodging trams yet again, then all that stood between us and our hostel was a steep ascent on shiny cobble stones, no mean feet carrying the weight of a small child on your back in 25°c heat. We made it up to the hostel, still conscious and upright, and checked in. The stairs were 'being cleaned' so we had to take the lift up to the first floor. When the doors opened we looked at the tiny lift and decided not to squeeze in with the stranger who had just got in. I think he had the same thought as he looked at us and our luggage and promptly pressed the button to close the door. When the lift eventually came back down, Hattie suggested we go one at a time but I thought better and squashed in next to her. Pinned against the back wall by our bags, we got up to the first floor and reversed out of the incredibly wobbly lift. Our rather ornate 12 bed dorm was split into two sections and filled almost exclusively with Americans. We quickly got chatting with a girl from Conneticut who tagged along with us for dinner. We enjoyed a surprisingly reasonably priced, traditional Czech meal in the nearby square and then went back to the hostel to socialise with our other dorm-mates. We played some games and had a few drinks - it made a nice change to be somewhere more lively after our last few hostels. Tired from a busy day of travelling, Hattie went to bed whilst I went out with some of the people from the hostel. As we trekked across Prague in the dark, I was able to see how beautiful it is at night as well. We went to a cool underground bar/club which was like a converted wine cellar where all the tables and chairs were recycled doors and you had to climb up onto them to sit. Drinking my cheap Czech beer out of a jam jar (in hindsight I'm starting to think maybe this club was a bit too hipster for its own good) I was reminded why I don't drink beer: it's gross. I stayed for a little while, listening to some live music and marvelling at the giant wolf-dog wandering around before a couple of other girls gave up and we headed back for the hostel. It was a bit of a shock to the system spending a whole evening with a large group of Americans but I had a nice chat with these two as we walked back and I learnt some good tips from their street-smarts. The next morning, after our free breakfast, we set off with the girl from dinner the night before. We went to the main square in the old town of Prague where we tagged along with a 'free' walking tour. Our Czech primary school teacher guide showed our little group all around the Old Town, the Jewish quarter (Josefov) and the Shopping district. We learnt a bit about the history of Prague and saw some nice areas that we may have missed otherwise. By the end of the tour, we were all very hungry so we rushed to a restaurant in the square where we all had some delicious Czech dishes. Having explored much of Prague that morning, we headed down to the river to enjoy the views and the gorgeous weather. Once we'd had enough of the sun, we went off in search of a supermarket. We found a Tesco (who knew they had them in the Czech Republic?) and picked up some very cheap food for dinner. We took our stuff back to the hostel and chilled in the room for a bit before making dinner. We figured out the very technical touch system on the hob and got our rice going. We then started on our ridiculous amount of broccoli. After about 45 minutes of cooking, the broccoli was still hard but we gave up and ate it anyway. After dinner, a group of our dorm-mates (now including a Finnish couple as well as all the Americans) headed up to the castle to see Prague as the sun set. It was a short but very steep walk from the hostel but the views were so incredible it was definitely worth it. After admiring the city for some time, we went back to the hostel for a quiet night playing games. I had an early night because I had big plans for the next morning... 4:15 am my alarm went off. I fought my urge to stay in bed, dragged some clothes on and headed out into the dawn. I walked back up the steep hill to see the sunrise. Apart from the castle guards, I was the first one up there so I took up the prime spot that I'd sussed out the night before. As I leant against the wall watching the gorgeous city come alive in the sunlight, a few other people came along but it was still very peaceful. I had slightly miscalculated the point where the sun would rise so, after a little while, I headed off to one of the bridges in search of a better angle. It felt really special to be stood on an empty bridge in Prague watching the sun gradually light up the famous Charles Bridge. A couple of hours after I'd first got up, I was back in bed getting a bit more sleep. When I woke up again, Hattie was getting ready. I left her reading about what on earth was going on with the government after the election the day before and went for breakfast. After I'd showered and dressed, we headed out to get a coffee and ignore the politics for a while. We decided to have some fun so walked down to the river's edge and hired a pedalo. We pedalled around for an hour, enjoying the beautiful city from another angle and soaking up the sun. For lunch, we headed to a vegan restaurant we'd come across the day before and enjoyed some very delicious, very Hattie-friendly burgers. We then walked around for a little while, finding ourselves in front of the Old Town Square just before 4pm. On the side of the town hall is the oldest working astronomical clock in the world which goes off every hour with an elaborate display including a skeleton, 12 apostles and finishing with the crow of a golden cockerel. It's supposed to be one of the most dissapointing sights in Europe but we were there on the hour so we bundled amongst the hoards of tourists to watch the 'spectacle'. After Dresden, I didn't think any city would be more beautiful but Prague has well and truly outdone it. I really could bang on for ages about how gorgeous it is (except that I don't know enough adjectives) and I expect I'll spend years recommending everyone to visit Prague one day. Next stop Česky Krumlov (a Bohemian castle city)!

15 Fun Things To Do in Austin, Texas
The capital of Texas, Austin is known for its live music, barbecue, tacos, and beer. This is precisely why I was in love with this city before I even traveled there! In this guide, we’ll dive into these and several more of the attractions and best things to do in Austin.
Austin is a city that prides itself on being just a little different.
Indeed, the state capital feels worlds apart from the rest of Texas. People here embrace that, though. An unofficial slogan of the city is “Keep Austin Weird,” and I’d say they’re doing a fine job.
In all seriousness, though, the Texas capital packs a serious punch as a travel destination. In addition to the amazing food, music, and beer, Austin is surrounded by rivers, lakes, and parks.
You have plenty of options for enjoying the great outdoors here. Go hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, and much more, it’s hard to be bored in Austin.
If you’re ready to plan an awesome trip to ATX, read on for a detailed look at the 15 top Austin attractions and what to do in this exciting city.
1. Tour the Texas Capitol
Topping our list of things to do in Austin is going on a tour of the Texas State Capitol. This beautiful Italian Renaissance Revival building is the seat of government for the state of Texas. It’s also a must-see for visitors to Austin.
They say everything’s bigger in Texas, and that’s certainly true of the state capitol. It’s actually bigger than the United States Capitol in Washington, DC. Its famous “sunset” color comes from the red granite that was used in its construction.
You’ll definitely want to spend some time exploring the capitol grounds to take it all in.
Head inside to admire the central rotunda, which is flanked by pictures of past governors. Look up at the impressive dome, where you’ll see a giant star surrounded by the word “TEXAS” – a nod to its nickname of the Lone Star State.
The Texas Capitol is open Monday to Friday from 7 AM-10 PM, however, tours only run from 8:30-4:30 pm. On the weekend it’s open from 9 AM-8 PM, with tours taking place between 9:30-3:30 on Saturday and noon-3:30 on Sunday. These tours are totally free and depart every 30-45 minutes from the South Foyer.
No worries if you don’t make it on a tour, as they’ve got some great resources for making your own self-guided tour. Just head to their website to download free brochures, or drop into the Visitor Center at the start of your visit. For something a little more fun, visit the Capito by segway with this tour.
Bonus: Governor’s Mansion
While you’re over here, you might as well check out the Texas Governor’s Mansion as well. You need to sign up for tours at least in a week, though, so click here to do that before your trip.
If you’re visiting Austin for the first time, you’ll probably want to book accommodation in the downtown area (which is where the State Capitol is located). Check out this list of places to stay in Austin for some great recommendations.
2. Visit Zilker Metropolitan Park
One of the top Austin attractions to visit is Zilker Metropolitan Park. This large green space at the juncture of the Colorado River and Barton Creek is the perfect place to come enjoy a day full of outdoor activities.
The park covers around 350 acres and is full of trails, gardens, natural springs, sports fields and courts, and much more.
Here you’ll find the Zilker Botanical Garden, which is known as the “jewel in the heart of Austin.” It’s home to many lovely theme gardens, including rose, herb, and Japanese. It only costs $3 for adults and $1 for kids, so it’s well worth a visit!
Another popular place to visit in the park is the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum. It’s dedicated to the work of Charles Umlauf and is home to over 150 of his sculptures and works.
This one is also a great bargain at $3.50 for adults and $1 for children. It’s open Tuesday-Friday from 10 AM-4 PM and on the weekend from 12-4.
I haven’t even scratched the surface of all the fun things to do in or around Zilker Park. As a matter of fact, a few of the other activities on offer here deserve their own spot on the list!

3. Fun on the River (one of the best things to do in Austin in the summer)
On a hot day in Austin (there are plenty of them!), there’s nothing better than cooling off in the river. At Zilker Park, you have plenty of options for fun in the water. SUPing, kayaking, and canoeing are all on tap here.
Zilker Park Boat Rentals has been in business since 1969 helping people enjoy the river in an environmentally-friendly way.
They charge $18 an hour or $54 for the whole day and only take cash. They’re open daily from 9 AM until dusk, so you can definitely get your money’s worth if you opt for the full day.
If you’re looking for a more laid back affair, then you can enjoy the Homer Simpson of water sports instead — tubing!
You can sign up with ATXcursions for a carefree day of floating down the river, ice-cold beer in hand. They provide all the equipment and you bring your own drinks. Oh yeah, don’t forget sunscreen and shades, either.
They run tubing trips on the weekends and on some holidays. Prices range from $59 to $79 depending on the day of the week. Head to their website to check out all the options.

4. Hike Barton Creek Trail (Barton Springs Pool)
Next up on our list of things to do in Austin actually starts south of the park, but it eventually ends up there. The Barton Creek Greenbelt Trail stretches for over 12 miles and is considered one of the best hiking trails in the state.
For a relatively easy hike, start out at the trailhead on Spyglass Drive (click here for directions). If you need some fuel for the road, drop into Tacodeli for some delicious brekky tacos before heading out on the trail. Click here to read a full guide to the Greenbelt and all its access points.
Head north on the trail and before long you’ll arrive at Campbell’s Hole — a great spot to take a dip and cool off.
Keep hiking for about 20 minutes and you’ll reach the Barton Springs Municipal Pool back in the park. The water here is fed by a natural spring and it’s usually a nice cool 68 °F (20 °C). This makes for the perfect way to cool off in that often intense Texas heat.
The pool is open from dawn to dusk daily, but it closes from 9 AM-7 PM on Thursday for rigorous cleaning. You’ll need to buy a ticket to access the pool between late April and late September. It costs $9 for adults and $4 for kids to enter.
5. Go Mountain Biking
Hiking a short part of the trail to the pool is an easy way to enjoy the great outdoors in Austin. If you’re up for more of a challenge, you can also try some mountain biking along the trail and several other places around the city.
In addition to the Greenbelt, other trails in the city include Slaughter Creek and McKinney Falls Park. You can check the MTB Project for a map of mountain biking trails in Austin to get started.
If you’re really serious about mountain biking, you may want to consider a day trip out to Spider Mountain Bike Park. It’s the only year-round chairlift-served mountain bike park in the country and is home to several different trails.
Located 60 miles northwest of the city on Buchanan Lake, it’s a beautiful place to add to your list of things to do in Austin.
A full-day pass for the lift and trail access costs $50 for adults and $45 for youth. They even rent bikes, helmets, and pads, so you don’t even need any gear. Check their website for all the details.
For a more chilled out day of biking, check out the Austin in a Nutshell Bike Tour, which takes you around the city. The tour includes the bike equipment, guide and park fees. You’ll learn about the history of the city and see the local landmarks. Or, add craft beer to your bike tour with Austin’s Gem Bike Tour!

6. See the Bats
Remember how I said the city’s unofficial slogan is “Keep Austin Weird?” Well, one of the top things to do in Austin is watching bats. Yes, those bats. The nocturnal flying mammals. There’s even a “Bat Fest” here every year in August!
Between March and November, nearly one and a half million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge just before sunset.
They come out of crevices in the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge (click here for directions) about 20-30 minutes before sunset. It’s a very popular thing to do here, so be sure to get there a bit early to claim a decent spot.
The walkway on the east side of the bridge provides the best vantage point, but the hill below the bridge is also nice since you can lay out a blanket.
If you go that route, just be sure to bring something to cover your head from potential falling guano (bat droppings).
Another fun way to take in the spectacle is on the water. You can take a rented SUP or kayak out to see the bats, and some local businesses even have special tours. Live Love Paddle runs a nightly 2.5-hour SUP tour to see the bats for $45 per person.
7. Photo Ops
You wouldn’t want to travel all the way to Austin and not have some awesome photos for the ‘gram! That’s why I’m including some popular photo ops on this list of the best things to do in Austin Texas. Thankfully, there are several solid options within a short walk of each other.
First up is the Greetings From Austin mural. This colorful mural looks like a retro postcard and makes for an awesome backdrop for a photo.
Another go-to spot for pics is the I Love You So Much Wall at Jo’s Coffee. It’s simple and to the point and allows you to write a gushing post about how much you love (insert name here).
It could be your significant other, it could be the city of Austin itself, or it could just be tacos. Mmmm… tacos. More on them later.
Perhaps my favorite is the Willie for President mural, which is just a block south. It depicts legendary singer-songwriter and native Texan Willie Nelson, who I think would make a fine president!
Walk a block east, and you’ll find the Before I Die Wall. Grab a piece of chalk and write something that’s on your bucket list, then get to work crossing it off.
8. See Live Music
In a city that likes to call itself the Live Music Capital of the World, you know I’m fitting some tunes into this list. Whether you’re into rocking out in a cramped dive or classing it up in a jazz club, you can find it here.
There are so many choices for live music in Austin that it can be overwhelming. Apparently there are over 250 different live music venues here!
Some of the best places to catch a show in ATX include: ACL Live at the Moody Theater, the Continental Club, Stubb’s Bar-B-Q, and the Elephant Room.
No matter what night of the week it is, there are plenty of options for shows in this city.
Seriously. I visited during the week in January when there was a freakish cold spell, and the town was still rocking. Click here to check out a full list of upcoming concerts and add some live music to your list of things to do in Austin.
For a unique tour idea, take the “Austin Live Music Crawl” where you’ll check out 3 iconic music venues, some up and coming ones, and listen to local, live music. This highly-rated tour includes a local guide, transport and cool vibes. Plus, your guide is a musician in Austin.

9. Experience Local Festivals
While you can catch some excellent live music just about any night of the year in Austin, you just can’t beat experiencing a festival here.
The city hosts several major festivals throughout the year, highlighted by SXSW (South By Southwest) and Austin City Limits.
The former takes place in March and lasts for ten days. It’s a conglomeration of music, interactive media, film, and conferences and it’s a really exciting event to experience. Check their website for all the details.
Another behemoth of a festival, ACL (Austin City Limits) is such a big deal that it now occupies two weekends. This world-famous music festival takes place in Zilker Park and always brings in a ridiculously good lineup.
You may be wondering if this city that prides itself on being weird has any weird festivals.
Of course it does!
In addition to the aforementioned Bat Fest, Austin also has a Hot Sauce Festival, Comic-Con Wizard World, and even a festival for Eeyore’s birthday. That’s right, Eeyore, the sad donkey from Winnie the Pooh. I told you this city was weird…
10. Go Museum Hopping
There are plenty of museums you can add to your list of things to do in Austin Texas. Whether you’re interested in history, art, or just some good old Austin quirkiness, there’s a museum for you here.
First up, there’s the Bullock Texas State History Museum.
Through interactive exhibits, audio recordings, films, and more, you’ll get an in-depth look at the state from prehistoric times up until today. In addition, the museum hosts several different events throughout the year and there’s an awesome IMAX theater here as well.
The history museum is open Monday to Saturday from 9 AM-5 PM and from noon-5 on Sunday. Admission costs $13 for adults and $9 for children, and you can click here to book your tickets online.
Right across the street, you’ll find the Blanton Museum of Art on the campus of the University of Texas.
It’s home to an impressive collection of nearly 20,000 different works of art from across the ages. A major highlight is seeing the building titled Austin by renowned artist Ellsworth Kelly. Famous for its rainbow of colored windows, this is the only building he ever designed.
Tickets are usually $12 for adults and $5 for kids, and it’s totally free to visit on Thursday. It’s open from 10 AM-5 PM Tuesday to Friday, 11-5 on Saturday, and 1-5 on Sunday.
That’s not all, though. You can also check out the Mexic-Arte Museum, South Austin Museum of Pop Culture, and even the Museum of the Weird.
The latter features things like shrunken heads, suits of armor, and other random stuff. It’s located in the back of the Lucky Lizard Curios & Gifts shop (click here for directions) and is open from 10 AM-midnight every day.
11. Visit The University of Texas
After visiting the history and art museums, it’s definitely worth it to explore the campus of the university. It’s a beautiful college campus that’s full of public art and historical landmarks, and it makes for a nice leisurely stroll.
One thing you won’t want to miss on UT’s campus is The Color Inside, a fascinating Skyspace by artist James Turrell.
The best time to really experience it is around sunset, but you’ll need to reserve your spot well in advance. Head to their website to find the next available time.
Another must-see while exploring campus is the UT Tower. You can sign up for a self-guided tour of the tower where you’ll go up to the observation deck to take in the views. Tours last 45 minutes and cost $6 per person. Click here to check the times and reserve your spot.
If you’re visiting during football season, you should definitely try to get tickets for a game.
Join the crowd of over 100,000 to cheer the Longhorns on to victory. Home games take place on Saturdays from late August to late November, and you can head to their website to look for tickets. Even if you’re not in town on a game day, you can still take a tour of the stadium.
12. Visit The LBJ Presidential Library
One of the top Austin attractions to visit is the LBJ Presidential Library. Native Texan Lyndon Baines Johnson became the 36th President of the United States after the tragic assassination of John F. Kennedy.
This presidential library and museum is dedicated to LBJ and the impact he had on the country.
It’s home to over 50,000 objects donated by the former president and his wife, from the clothing the wore at his inauguration to the desk he used to sign the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
There’s plenty to see and do here to keep you busy for several hours.
You can step into a replica of LBJ’s Oval Office, listen to actual phone calls he had during his time as president, and even check out his stretch limousine.
The library and museum are open daily from 9 AM-5 PM. Tickets are $10 for adults and $3 for children and you can click here to buy them online in advance.

13. Enjoy Lady Bird Lake
Next up on our list is a place that was actually named after the former First Lady.
LBJ’s wife was known as Lady Bird and was a beloved public figure for her work in beautifying the nation’s cities, including Austin. The city named Lady Bird Lake after her to honor, which is a great place to come enjoy some hiking or biking.
The best way to experience it is on the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, which makes a 10-mile loop. It’s a very scenic way to take in the sights of Austin while getting some exercise at the same time! Click here to download a map of the trail.
Even if you’re not up for a long hike or ride on the trail, you should still come here to check out the boardwalk section. It’s only one mile long and is the perfect place to spend some time on a nice day.
Be sure you check out the Belting It Out art installation while you’re here. This is a collection of bronze belts with song lyrics from famous Texas musicians engraved on them.
Of course, you can also experience Lady Bird Lake out on the water. No motorized boats are allowed, so it’s quite peaceful. As with other points in the city, it’s possible to rent kayaks, canoes, or stand-up-paddle boards here.
14. Hang Out at SoCo (South Congress)
One of the coolest places to hang out in Austin is the area known as SoCo (South Congress). This shopping and cultural district is home to plenty of eclectic boutiques, cafes, music and art venues, and much more.
For a dash of 80’s and 90’s nostalgia, you can drop into the quirky Monkey See Monkey Do shop. Here you’ll find vintage action figures and other random collector’s items.
Once you’re done in here, head next door to Big Top — a circus-themed candy store with an old school soda fountain.
Another fun place worth checking out is Lucy in Disguise With Diamonds. First of all, that has to be the coolest shop name ever. Second, this has got to be one of, if not the best, costume shops in the land.
It’s way more than just pre-assembled costumes, though. They have all kinds of clothing, jewelry, masks, accessories, and more, so you can get really creative here.
These days, SoCo is also known for its abundance of food trucks. This started with the arrival of Hey Cupcake! back in 2007.
You can still get your cupcake fix here, but if you need lunch before dessert be sure to check out Burro Cheese Kitchen for gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches.

15. Devour Tacos and BBQ
Rounding out our list of things to do in Austin is sampling the city’s famous tacos and BBQ. After all that hiking, swimming, biking, and dancing you’ve been doing, you’re sure to have quite the appetite.
Some consider Austin to be the taco capital of the US, and they definitely have a strong case.
The city has authentic tacos from south of the border, classic Tex-Mex, Asian fusion, breakfast tacos — you name it, you’ll find it in Austin!
In addition to the aforementioned Delitaco, other places to check out include Rosita’s al Pastor, Tamale House East, and Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ.
Speaking of BBQ, that last recommendation is the perfect place to combine two of the tastiest things in Austin.
Putting Texas BBQ classics like pulled pork and beef brisket in a taco is an absolute genius idea! I’ve already mentioned Stubb’s as a live music venue, but it’s worth repeating just for its famous BBQ. Other popular choices include Franklin, La Barbecue, and Stiles Switch.
If you need something tasty to wash down all those tacos and BBQ, there are plenty of excellent local craft beers in Austin. Click here for a solid list of breweries in Austin that are worth visiting.
Now You Know What To Do in Austin!
I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to drop everything and head to Austin after getting through this list.
It’s just such an exciting city with so much going on. I especially love all the options for enjoying the great outdoors and live music there, plus the fact that Austinites are proud to be weird!
After hearing rave reviews about Austin for many years, I finally made it there during our bus trip down to Mexico. Despite there being a freakish cold front that came through the city, we still had a blast there.
I’m hoping to make it back for SXSW or Austin City Limits sometime soon, or maybe just swing through on a random weekend to skip the crowds. Whenever you travel to the Texas capital, one thing’s for sure, you’ll have a great time.
Have you traveled to Austin? If you have any awesome recommendations for things to do there, leave a comment below!

2019 Reading Goal Outcomes
Goal: 52 Books in 2019, no romances, no rereads
Result: 61
Summary: This was a year of fantasy, with the Throne of Glass series as hands-down the best one. I almost entirely read fiction, so will try for more non-fiction in 2020.
1. Reader, I Married Him - Stories Inspired by Jane Eyre, by Tracy Chevalier.
Short stories again, dipping my feet in the water of getting the reading habit up and going again. I read this entire book over the course of various subway rides.
2. Ahead of the Curve, by Joseph H. Ellis.
A business investing textbook that Ryan wanted me to read. Pretty interesting, nice explanation of the fundamentals, but limited applicability as it only pertains to certain cyclical industries.
3. Anya’s War, by Andrea Alban Gosline.
A lovely young adult story set in 1940s Shanghai in the Jewish community there, all the refugees fleeing Europe. Didn’t know about all the Jews who lived in China. They later left for the US.
4. The Silver Swan, by Elena Delbanco.
Father and daughter famous cellists, story about love, loss, legacy, and genius.
5. Redeeming Love, by Francine Rivers.
A very Christian novel, based on the Biblical story of Hosea. It was quite a moving story, but now I want to read some of her secular novels, just to see the difference. It was one of the books on my Kindle, recommended to me by Nicole.
6. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, by Dai Sijie.
Two adolescent boys sent to rural China for re-education during the Cultural Revolution. Translated from the French.
7. Tarnsman of Gor, by John Norman.
A sci-fi novel about a planet like Earth on the other side of the sun. The first in the series. Found this in our Edinburgh Airbnb.
8. Dear Mr. You, by Mary-Louise Parker.
A collection of letters to all the men in her life. I liked most the ones to the uncle of her adopted Ethiopian daughter, and then one at the very end to the oyster picker who picked her father’s last meal.
9. Lady of the Snakes, by Rachel Pastan.
A look at life as a female academic, trying to find the balance between her career and her family. I wonder if I ever feel as passionately about something as the protagonist, who is dedicated to a single famous author in Slavic literature, and his wife who is secretly the real author. The whole book made me remember the feminist comic about the mental load in a family.
10. Trespassing Across America, by Ken Ilgunas.
One man’s journey through the middle of America as he followed the path of the Keystone XL pipeline, and his reflections on the environment, our role, travels, midwestern folk, and long walks. Very gentle reading, and I definitely was surprised by some of the research that he has done about the history of the Great Plains. I didn’t realize what a drain on the US economy the farmers are, and that they are basically welfare farmers.
11. Bakhita, by Veronique Olmi.
The sorrowful story of one of the modern saints, a Sudanese slave who came to Italy. The story of her life, with the backdrop of colonization, slavery, and the world wars.
12. Plenty, by Alisa Smith and J. B. Mackinnon.
The two authors decide to maintain a 100-mile diet for a year. Interspersed with recipes every chapter, and alternates between their voices. A delicious and thoughtful journey, that made me want to leap into the kitchen and start canning and pickling.
13. Assassin’s Blade, by Sarah J. Maas.
Collection of short stories leading up to the first Throne of Glass novel.
14. Throne of Glass, by Sarah J. Maas
15. Crown of Midnight, by Sarah J. Maas
16. Heir of Fire, by Sarah J. Maas
17. Queen of Shadows, by Sarah J. Maas
18. Empire of Storms, by Sarah J. Maas
19. Tower of Dawn, by Sarah J. Maas
20. Kingdom of Ash, by Sarah J. Maas. This was one of the best high fantasy series I have read in a long time. Epic battles, intrigue, loss, love, courage, everything. I kept rereading my favourite sections for the rest of the year.
21. Haiku Love, The British Museum, by Alan Cummings.
Beautifully illustrated by mostly woodblock prints, I took photos of my favorites, from mainly the new love section.
22. My Last Love Story, by Falguni Kothari.
A cancer love story revolving around a love triangle in a Gujarati diaspora community.
23. Unaccustomed Earth, by Jhumpa Lahiri
Haven’t read anything by Lahiri since Interpreter of Maladies, so I’m glad to jump into more short stories. Fantastic, as expected.
24. The Grift, by Debra Ginsberg.
Fortune telling and human weakness.
25. A Court of Thorns and Roses, by Sarah J. Maas
26. A Court of Mist and Fury, by Sarah J. Maas
27. A Court of Wings and Ruin, by Sarah J. Maas.
I liked the Throne of Glass series better, but this was still good. There is one more novelette but it is supposed to be a bridge to a new spinoff series, and I would rather just wait for everything to be out and binge read them all at once. So I will stop here with this series.
28. Radiance, by Grace Draven.
29. Night Tide, by Grace Draven
30. Eidolon, by Grace Draven
31. In the Darkest Midnight, by Grace Draven.
Another epic fantasy, but in the end Draven is a bit heavier on the romance.
32. Master of Crows, by Grace Draven.
Series unfinished and hard to get a hold of.
33. A Little Life, by Hanya Yanagihara.
A devastating novel about friendship and trauma and New York City. Unforgettable. I read Veasna’s copy which has been making the rounds in our circle of friends and leaving us all ashes in its wake.
34. Graceling, by Kristin Cashore
35. Fire, by Kristin Cashore
36. Bitterblue, by Kristin Cashore
Another young adult fantasy series, again a pretty good one. This seems to be the theme of this year.
37. Look Who’s Back, by Timur Vermes.
A satire on the media focused world we live in, through the eyes of Hitler who woke up in the modern world.
38. Crazy Rich Asians, by Kevin Kwan
39. China Rich Girlfriend, by Kevin Kwan.
Both are fun and fluffy reads. I can see why they became so popular.
40. Before She Sleeps, by Bina Shah.
Dystopian, Handmaids Tale, with a South Asian setting and characters.
41. When Churchill Slaughtered Sheep and Stalin Robbed a Bank, by Giles Milton
Lovely collection of historical anecdotes.
42. Enemy Women by Paulette Jiles.
The American civil war was so bloody. I think Americans would have a better understanding of war if they fought wars on their own lands again.
43. The Hundredth Queen, by Emily R. King
44. The Fire Queen, by Emily R. King
45. The Rogue Queen, by Emily R. King
46. The Warrior Queen, by Emily R. King.
The premise was such a good one, and it was fun to be able to read fantasy in a South Asian setting, but the writing was flat and the characters annoyingly indecisive. They all seem to stumble from predicament to predicament, reacting endlessly but never able to do anything properly. By the second book I just wanted the story to end.
47. The Place of Shining Light, by Nazneen Sheikh.
A moving thriller about trying to smuggle an ancient Buddha statue from Afghanistan into Pakistan, and the stories of the people along the way of the journey.
48. Grave Mercy, by Robin LaFevers
49. Dark Triumph, by Robin LaFevers
50. Mortal Heart, by Robin LaFevers.
A fun trilogy set in historical times, with three different female protagonists who are also trained as assassins by a convent. Found it through a list of books recommended as similar to the Throne of Glass series, but it was different enough to still be enjoyable and not compared in my mind while I was reading.
51. Queen Song, by Victoria Aveyard
52. Steel Scars, by Victoria Aveyard
53. Red Queen, by Victoria Aveyard
54. Glass Sword, by Victoria Aveyard
55. King’s Cage, by Victoria Aveyard
56. War Storm, by Victoria Aveyard.
Again, this is a series I found because of my suffering from Throne of Glass withdrawal. The story is interesting enough, and decent attention to detail and logic with a lot of the action/battles. The protagonist did start to get on my nerves as annoyingly helpless and indecisive, but then the author started changing the points of view in the last couple of books, and some of the other characters found the protagonist as annoying as I did, so that was refreshing to read and gave me the stamina to finish the series. There are a few more novellas but I’m not interested/invested enough to find them. I’ll stop here.
57. Pick-up, by Charles Willeford.
Good old fashioned American crime novel from the 60s with a few unexpected twists.
58. Notes on a Banana, by David Leite. Memoir on food, love, and manic depression. The highs/manic parts sound blindingly productive. Glad for him that he sequestered himself during the whole AIDS thing. Wish there were some recipes, I might go look at his blog.
59. The Young Elites, by Marie Lu
60. The Rose Society, by Marie Lu
61. The Midnight Star, by Marie Lu.
A refreshing series with a true anti-heroine. You despise her so much almost throughout the series.
