Dholera SIR Gujarat has taken a lead in DMIC development In Dholera SIR
Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor is a strong initiative taken towards sustainable development of India. It plans to connect the political capital of India (Delhi) to the financial capital (Mumbai) with utmost ease reviving the manufacturing sector in full strength along its pathway.
Several smart cities have been planned along the corridor that shall support the manufacturing activity taking place on the DMIC. The first smart cities that have been planned belong to the vibrant state of Gujarat – Dholera and Gujarat International Finance Tech City (GIFT).
Gujarat plays a very important role and has explicitly taken a lead in development of DMIC corridor through participating actively in it. In the Vibrant Gujarat Summit, Mr. Amitabh Kant, had expressed his heart out on how he thinks that Gujarat has been the first to initiate developmental steps always.
In his speech, he admired the state of Gujarat and its civic workforce and expressed his view that Gujarat is heading towards a place where it can soon be referred to as “Singapore of India.” Though the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor passes through six important states, the state of Gujarat exhibits a different kind of positivity and vibrancy to get things going and delivered as scheduled.
The corridor shall shorten the travel distance and time between the important cities of Delhi and Mumbai by unimaginable proportions. Currently it takes 14 days approximately to transport goods between the cities while the corridor shall bring the time down to a magical twelve hours.
A revolution in itself, Gujarat has been the first one to grab the opportunity and has tapped the potential it unleashes though the new Special Investment Region Act which allows the state to create new cities, the first being Dholera SIR. The city of Dholera shall be bigger than Singapore in size; Singapore is 670 square kilometers while Dholera is being planned on 920 square kilometers of land. It shall have all state of art facilities and amenities that are not prevalent anywhere in India currently.
Dholera with its trunk infrastructure already under development shall boast of real time data capturing and monitoring, ultimate connectivity through roads, metro, railways, sea and air, 24 hours power supply , incessant water supply, underground sewerage system, desalination plant, recycling facility, quality education, healthcare facilities, pollution free environment and everything that an average Indian cannot imagine.
Dholera SIR Project is being planned in a way that it elevates the standard of life for its residential Plots and also creates ample employment opportunities by encouraging set up of industries within the region. Manufacturing giants such as HCC, Mahindra Lifespace and Adani group have already made their commitments to invest in Dholera with many more to follow.
Gujarat has truly grasped the opportunity and a different kind of energy and dynamism can be seen within the state that shall ensure that it leads the country in all fronts.

Overall, the project is expected to attract investments in dholera to the tune of 250 billion rupees and give sustainable employment opportunities to over 20,000 citizens.

Dholera SIR First Greenfield Smart City Developed By Government
Prime Minister Narendra Modi perceives India’s future as one where in the residents live better in a healthier environment availing better utilities and have access to basic necessities of life. With the vision for a brighter future of India, he has launched several missions and programs targeting towards his goal.
A shelter to dwell in is a basic necessity of every human and keeping this in view, Mr. Modi has come up with a Housing for all vision by the year 2022 giving rise to the need of building 90 million homes – a very challenging task indeed. It is first India’s Greenfields Smart City Developed Dholera SIR by government.Similarly he has initiated Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), a mission started to ensure that each household has a sure shot supply of water and sewerage connection, ample greenery and open spaces such as parks is available in the cities and reduction in air pollution through improved traffic management and transition to vehicles with lower carbon emissions.
“Make in India” is another major step towards boosting innovation and foster skill development while protecting intellectual property at the same time. However, the biggest of all missions undertaken is the development of smart cities to create a better and more sustainable India – We shall discuss about this in detail.
Government of India has come up with the plan of developing 100 smart cities spread across all states. While Uttar Pradesh has been given the opportunity to nominate 13 smart cities for this purpose, Tamil Nadu is not far behind and has the chance to nominate 12 cities. Other smaller states can nominate two or less names for the selection of Dholera Smart City. Based on several parameters such as revenue, expenditure, solid waste management, infrastructure and many others, the government shall then decide on the 100 cities that are worthy of going a step ahead and being developed as smarter ones. The five smart cities that are to be built on the DMIC are Dholera in Gujarat, Shendra-Bidkin in Maharashtra, Vikram Udyogpuri Township near Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, Integrated Industrial Township in Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh and Gurgaon in Haryana.
It is important to follow a bottom-up approach instead of a top-down approach for the smart city as the later might lead to failure. A good example is Delhi Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) which was based upon similar system in Curitiba, Brazil. The development and implementation plans were derived from the existing example but the practical aspects such as urban density and actual requirements of Delhi’s residents were overlooked in the process. The result was failure. It is therefore important that everything is well integrated and coordinated and the city is envisioned correctly. The funding requirement should also be assessed correctly and a ground level approach should be followed while implementing the project.

With Dholera SIR being the maiden smart city, it also is the biggest and only Greenfield project amongst the 100 smart cities to be developed in India. The city shall cover 920 square kilometers, 100 kilometers from Ahmedabad. It also draws immense importance due its being close to the DMIC corridor which shall soon be the industrial backbone of India.
Similar to other smart cities, Dholera SIR Project shall widely use Information and Communication Technology for smarter functioning. Real time monitoring and usage of data to create efficiency within the administrative systems shall also be important towards conservation of natural resources and reduction of cost. Green building concept shall also be introduced in the smart city which shall be built keeping sustainable environment and healthier living in mind.
The city shall be developed in three phases and is expected to get completed by the year 2040. As per execution in-charge ‘Aecom’, the city can be expected to be good for residing shortly and should be home to about 1 lakh residents by the year 2019.Dholera SIR is being planned residential and commercial plots as a city with uncompromised infrastructure and superlative amenities and civic utilities which shall soon be an inspiration for the upcoming smart cities.
The planners and architects appointed for development of the maiden smart city are vigorously at task and shall hopefully present to the Indians a ‘Dholera SIR’ that could only be a part of someone’s imagination a few years ago.
