On this day 151 years ago, 17-year-old George Tutin, an English law student, was feeling sick and stayed in bed until 10am.
We've been thoroughly enjoying paging through this newly acquired 1872 diary, which is completely filled out and contains a lot of observations about the weather. More interestingly, it also notes what he was up to academically and personally. Tutin took a lot of walks, spent most afternoons studying, translated and read Virgil, kept up with international affairs, trimmed sheep, and unfortunately seems to have gotten a lot of colds.
November 29, 1872
Being poorly I did not go to Thirsk but enjoyed the more inviting delights of bed till 10 o'clock.
February 26, 1872
A dull wet day, I got my watch-glass broken yesterday so I send it to get mended at Ripon by the postman.
June 18, 1872
Rather fine in the morning. In the afternoon a most terrible thunder storm took place as big as marble falling. We consequently did not get to Ripon Flower Show. Papa out in the evening after the storm. The Lords have made a mess of the Ballot Bill.

"MOVING DAY PASSES," Ottawa Citizen. May 2, 1934. Page 5. ---- Difficulty of Securing Vehicles Proves Only Real Hazard of Period ---- AMUSING SIDELIGHTS ---- Push-carts Piled High With Furniture Requisitioned- Victims of Forced Eviction Housed ---- Yesterday saw the peak of the last minute rush on the part of the unemployed to secure dwelling and many thousands of them were successful, according to reports from various quarters. Although trouble had been expected in several wards it did not materialize except in regard to the difficulty in securing trucks and vans.
In Villeray ward hundreds of un-employed families were unable to secure the necessary transportation for the heavy articles of furniture. On many streets furniture was to be seen on the sidewalks, awaiting something in which it could be moved. Aside from this no trouble occurred and police report that only the usual number of routine complaints in connection with moving were received by them. These consisted of lost articles for the most part.
Alderman J. H. Brien of Rosemount ward stated that there had been no trouble throughout the day. Shortly after the dinner hour 10 five-ton trucks belonging to the city were secured to help move those who had been unable to get anything with which to move beforehand. Arrangements were made to keep there on the job right up to this morning. Only two forced evictions. were reported and both families were placed in new quarters.
During the absence of Alderman Joseph Schubert, of St. Louis 1 ward, who is in New York, his secretary handled all problems which arose. He stated that there was remarkably little trouble in view of what had been expected. Most of the families who had to move were successful in obtaining quarters while others made arrangements to stay where they were for a few days longer.
Yesterday many of the unemployed continued to do their own moving particularly where the distance. between the houses was short. Back lanes in the crowded districts showed almost as much activity as the main streets. A survey of the crowded sections of the city showed that there were almost as many push carts as motor trucks being used for moving.
WOMAN IN TEARS. One woman who was pushing a hand cart along Belanger street burst into tears when one wheel struck a rut, throwing half the contents into the street and breaking a glass jar. A postman who was making his deliveries in the district came to her assistance and helped her to right the load and move on her way.
Many of the unemployed have become excellent jugglers judging by the manner in which the small push carts were piled high with household effects. On top of one such load a large plate glass ass mirror was to be seen. Trailing along behind the cart evidently hoping that the mirror would slip were several small boys who were much amused by the appearance of the load and the manoeuvres of the man pushing it.
A heavily loaded truck on St. Zotique street blew a tire on one of the rear wheels yesterday afternoon. The load of furniture was tilted at a precarious angle but the wheel was successfully jacked up and the tire repaired without the contents being spilled.
A team of horses pulling a drav loaded with furniture ran away and struck an electric light pole. at the corner of St. Lawrence boulevard and St. Catherine street, late yesterday afternoon. Household goods were strewn all over the street but no one was injured.
One gang of unemployed men in Villeray ward succeeded in borrowing a wagon but couldn't secure a horse. They loaded the wagon moderately and pushed and pulled the load themselves making a haul of five city blocks.
About 2.30 o'clock yesterday afternoon there were ten moving vans and trucks on Third avenue, in Rosemount, between Masson and Pandurand streets. At the same time, in the same block, four un employed families were moving their effects bodily. Other streets throughout the city presented similar scenes.
PLIGHT OF REPORTER. Figure it out any way way you It's like a tough spot a young local newspaperman has found himself in.
He was rooming on St. Mark street, and the people he was staying with decided, rather abruptly, to move on May 1, taking the roomer with them to a Mackay street home. They warned him about the move, the day before, but being a newspaperman he did not have time to go and see his new abode.
His landlord gave him the new address-but by mistake gave him the wrong one. So when he finished work at an advanced hour yesterday morning to go "home," he found himself at the wrong a dress. A frantic telephone call to his old home brought no response. Faced with the alternative of ringing every door bell on Mackay street at one a.m. the reporter judged discretion the better part of valor and spent the night at hotel.
Yesterday he was still wondering what to do about it - not knowing the firm which moved the family or any other way of finding his new home. Any suggestions?
ONE OF QUIETEST. After having every man in the police department prepared to cope with any possible trouble, Director Fernand Dufresne, head of the Montreal police, stated late yesterday afternoons that yesterday was one of the quietest May Days in the history of Montreal, Only a few odd groups of men who attempted to demonstrate in front of the offices, of the Unemployment Relief Commission, Ontario Street west, had be dispered while the various squares and public parks in the city were kept clear. Police believe that the seizure of over 50.000 Communist circulars by the anti-Communist squad of the local police department, nipped-in-the-bud a monster demonstration over the weekend, which was to have been held on Victoria Square, Viger Square, and Champs do Mars.
Several calls were made to police headquarters by citizens who stated that trouble was brewing in various sections of the city. Large police automobiles and patrol wagons loaded with men were rushed to each scene, but found only the usual moving day arguments among neighbors. Police on font, mounted, motorcycle, and plainclothesmen and detectives patrolled the city streets and squares, and persons at tempting to gather in groups were quickly dispersed.
Deputy Director C. Barnes, of the police department, was personally in charge of the men, while Lieut. J. Enn's, head of the anti-Communist squad, patrolled the various public balls where Communist meeting were to have taken place. Late last night police reported that no arrests had been made.

Памяти Тима Норелла / Remembering Tim Norell

The Postman ~ Harry Lewis
Requested: Yes ~ Hey love, could you please write an imagine involving like world war 2 or something? I adore your writing!
Tags: Death
“I am speaking to you from the cabinet room at 10 Downing Street. This morning the British ambassador in Berlin handed the German government a final note stating that unless we heard from them by 11 o'clock that they were prepared at once to withdraw their troops from Poland, a state of war would exist between us. I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this country is at war with Germany.”
-
The news came one year after you had married the love of your life, Harold Lewis. The day was perfect, it was held in a church located near to where you both lived. You were both too poor for anything properly fancy, so your wedding ring was the ring that Harry’s mum, Sue had given him on the day that he had moved out.
The jazz band that was hired, did a phenomenal job. Harry held you tight all night, moving to the music with you as your families looked on with a sense of pride. On that lovely night in June, you loved him so.
A year later and Harry was packing his belongings getting ready to go and fight in the biggest war that was ever going to happen in either of your lifetimes, the Second World War. Which, seemed ludicrous to you because they said the Great War would be the war to end all wars. Yet here you were, watching him pack. An overwhelming sense of fear watching over you, you had grown up without your own father due to the Great War, you did not want anything like that to happen to Harry, especially when you had only just started your lives together.
Harry stood back, admiring his work as he asked you to think if there was anything that he had forgotten to pack, you glanced at his suitcase the main things that stood out to you were the envelopes, cigarettes, ink and a fountain pen. At least you knew that he was planning to stay in contact with you.
“I think you’ve done a splendid job,” you whisper, turning your back on him. You couldn’t bare to face him and know that the man that you loved not only was going to war, and was risking his life. But, he was going to be putting other people’s lives in danger. This was so far from the man you knew, the man you fell in love with and the man that you hoped beyond any hope you had before was going to return to you.
Harry walked over to you, and took your face in his hand, tilting your head up to make you look at him. “My love, as soon as this war is over, I am coming back to you. We’ll start a family, tend to our babies, watch them play, and then watch them marry. Then, watch our children tend to our grandchildren, watch our grandchildren play... once our time is up, we will enter whatever awaits for us together.” He says, placing a soft kiss to your lips.
“I just don’t want you to go,” you whisper.
“Darling,” he stops for a moment. As if trying to absorb all of your sadness and worry, but not knowing how. “I will send you letters each week that I am in Paris, and I promise that you’ll feel better, when the postman comes.”
-
The war had passed on slowly, you had been informed in your countless letters from Harry that his boots had lost their tread. But still, he continued writing you letters never breaking his promise. This week, his one had said.
“You are always with me, even when I feel alone. This rifle bears a burden and it’s heavy on my soul, but you won’t have to miss me as once this war is won. We will be together, when the postman comes.”
-
One morning you are awoken to a loud banging at the door, a familiar sense of dread washed over you. You knew what this meant, every woman in this country knew what this meant! But this couldn’t be it. You get out of bed and begrudgingly go to answer the door.
Upon opening the door, you find a man standing outside with a telegram a sad look on his face. You feel yourself wipe away a single tear as you hear him say, something about the military, apologies from the ministry...
All at once it seems, you were on the floor.
You question him, “No, you’ve got this wrong, my husband’s fast, my husband’s strong and I promise you’ll know better, when the postman comes.”
-
“If you’ve received this letter, it means the worst is done. I’m sorry and I love you. This isn’t what I want. But you will find another, and I will understand. I just hope he loves you more than any other can. I sent you all these letters and for reasons there’s just one, it is me you will remember when the postman comes.”

The Londoners Who Sell Drugs Online
MDMA, cannabis and even cocaine are all available on mainstream websites such as Craigslist. Alongside listings for second hand cycling helmets and composting bins, Craigslist's 'for sale' section features around 10 new ads a day openly offering drugs. Headlines commonly include, "weed at a discounted price £20", "Charlie, sniff & coke £50" and "Coke, weed, hash, MDMA £20." Ads usually have the dealer's mobile phone number, or their username on KIK, the instant messaging app that can be downloaded for free and used anonymously. Alternatively, buyers can simply click 'reply' on the ad, and respond anonymously via their email address, which isn't visible to the person receiving the message. Still, it sounds a risky business. Who's willing to sell illegal substances in view of the entire world? Daniel, from Columbia, has been selling drugs in London since he was 'transferred' here by his boss two years ago. He started placing ads online a month ago, on the advice of another dealer, "I decided to go online and promote our business," he says, "I found Craigslist!" I decided to go online and promote our business... I found Craigslist! Craigslist ads — which are free to place — stay online for 45 days, but new ads are placed all the time, pushing the older ones down. Daniel places a new ad every one or two days, receiving 15-25 responses to each, and an average of 20-30 responses a day. He estimates that 50% of his business is generated online — 20% from Craigslist and 30% from We Be High, a website describing itself as a "Worldwide Cannabis Travel Guide." Here, dealers advertise in the comments section of the city they're working in, with one-liners such as, "Reach me now for some stuff, much in stock now." Daniel's other clients come from "different connections we have." So how many clients is that in total? "I’ve got a lot!" he says. Marijuana is his most popular product, and while some clients are tourists who buy from him as a one-off, the majority are repeat customers living in London. Daniel says he knows his products are good, based on feedback from clients. But have any complained? "Yeah, in November, a man from the USA complained. We tried it ourselves to confirm if what he was saying was true — then we changed our supplier." As for the client, "we refunded his money and he waited a little bit for new products coming, and when other products came, we delivered." Is your postman delivering drugs? asked BBC's Newsbeat recently. Photo: Magic Pea. (We're not in any way suggesting this postman is or has delivered drugs.) Drug-related deaths in the news are bad for business, says Daniel: "Clients start asking questions!" However, despite that bad batch, Daniel says he never worries about clients having a bad reaction. "We are confident in our supplier and when our supply gets here in London, we have a doctor who checks everything and makes sure it's up to standard," he says. When Daniel deals with a new client for the first time, he asks them to pay upfront via Western Union or Bitcoin. "They see us online, they contact us and they give us the delivery address. They pay, and we drop off. If that's successful, then the next transaction, they pay cash on delivery." Michael is in his early 30s and has been selling drugs online since he started dealing just over a year ago: "I was made redundant from my job as a warehouse manager," he says, "temporary contracts never turned into full time employment, and it got to the point where I was depressed. I've got a young family and it put a strain on us — I had to make money." I've got a young family and it put a strain on us — I had to make money. He got the idea to advertise online from a friend who put an ad up on Gumtree two years ago: "He just randomly done it and everyone was surprised — we didn't think for a split second that it would be as successful as it is. "People online spend ridiculous amounts compared to people from the area who just want to pick up £10-£20's worth." Michael also advertises on forums (which he declines to name) where people discuss drugs. He says he's not the only dealer who does this: "A lot of people, they're afraid to go to an estate or approach a group of guys," he says, "so the best thing for them to do is use the internet and go on forums to see if they can find buyers that way." Who's buying these substances off Michael? The majority of clients are in Canary Wharf and Surrey Quays, "'cos there's a lot of people in those areas who are quite rich." He takes payment from all his clients in person, including the first time buyers. Only scammers, he claims, would ask for money upfront: "Why would you pay for a product you haven't seen, from a guy you haven't met? It don't make sense. "But a lot of people who use these sites are not world-wise. They pay these people and sit there waiting hours for a product that's never going to turn up." This happened to Anna, a 21-year-old barista who arrived in London a month ago from Australia. Anna has been smoking marijuana since she was 17, and buying from Craigslist for the last two years: "I was at a beach party and we got on the topic of smoking weed," she says. "I asked my friend where he got his from and he said Craigslist. I was like, 'no way, I didn't think that would actually work!' "I tried it out for myself and it worked pretty well. "But I did get scammed once pretty bad, for about £200," admits Anna, "I was young and naïve and I didn't know what I was doing — this was at the very beginning of my Craigslist experience. The person I dealt with was like, 'transfer me the money and I'll get it to you.' So I did, and then he was like, 'oh no, the police have picked me up around the corner!'" Anna got her money back from Western Union, and went on to find a regular dealer via Craigslist. I did get scammed once pretty bad, for about £200. Since being in London, she's answered an ad to buy from a dealer in Canning Town, and she's one of the few buyers to place her own ad in the 'Wanted' section, stating, '420 Wanted North.' Anna is faithful to Craigslist: "I don't advertise anywhere else because I'm well enough off on there — and I didn't know any other websites I could put ads on." She likes the anonymity of Craigslist: "It codes your email — it's just a bunch of numbers and letters, so there's not much room for law enforcement to get involved. "It’s pretty easy to slip under the radar." Anna's confidence extends to meeting dealers face to face. "I usually meet them at a tube station, then go somewhere out of the way like a park. I used to worry a bit, but either they bring a friend or I bring a friend, and it's like, eight o'clock, so it's never one-on-one in the middle of the night!" Many dealers and buyers don't fear the law. Photo: Sabine Thöle Indeed, many dealers still like the personal approach, even if they're using online forums as well. Michael meets all his new clients in public places, favouring KFC and McDonalds: "Clients always say, 'isn’t it obvious? Shouldn't we go round a street corner?' No! That’s the worst thing you can do. Because if you're spotted, a sophisticated person, with a person who's dressed in a tracksuit, going round the corner, anyone who sees that would say, 'What's going on there?' "I've done deals right in front of the police, but it's because of the way I do the transaction, it doesn't look so obvious and untoward." When he arranges to meet a new client for the first time, Michael sometimes asks what they look like — other times, he trusts he'll spot them: "I can tell straight away by their body language when a person's standing there waiting, or when a person is walking up to where we're supposed to meet. They're anxious because they don't know what to expect." He was looking at me like, 'what's going on?' I was like, 'you're not Kevin, are you?' He said, 'no, my name's Steve.' However, this isn't always fool-proof: "I was in Holborn and this man was wearing exactly what the client described himself to be wearing. So I walked straight up to him and I was like, 'alright mate?' I had the product in my hand. I put my hand in his hand and I took time to shake it, and he was looking at me like, 'what's going on?' I was like, 'you're not Kevin, are you?' He said, 'no, my name's Steve.' I tried to take back the product and he went, 'but I like what I have in my hand!' "He bought it, and when my man did come along, he bought some as well." Michael's never turned up to find the client's not there, "I speak to them on the phone, and I'm a good judge of character." However, he does receive hoax calls from his competitors on Craigslist: "They say they want a delivery in Uxbridge or Harrow-on-the-Hill, but they don't ask me the questions a client would ask about what they're buying. They say they want a delivery on the other side of London to put me out of the equation — it gives them a chance to make sales or scam people." The Home Office plans to crack down on cyber drug sales... but they don't seem to know it's going on under their noses. Photo: psyxjaw Michael believes the dealers behind the calls are the ones who are out to scam buyers using anonymous messaging app KIK: "I've come to understand how these people work. So when I do get their call, I ask them certain questions. If I'm unsure, I pretend that I forget about them — if they really want it, they will call you back!" Like Daniel, Michael says he knows what he sells is good quality, because he trusts his suppliers and listens to client feedback. However, unlike Daniel, Michael worries about his clients having adverse reactions. "I had someone call me who wanted MDMA," he says, "and when I saw them, I couldn't give it to them, because they were like 15, 16, 17 year old. I asked them if they'd done it before, and they said yeah, but I can tell they haven't, because they asked me how to take it. So I knew straight away, and I was like, 'no way'. I say to them 'if I know you got uni tomorrow, I'm not giving it to you! There's no point you doing this and messing up your studies. "Even the people I see that are studying to become dentists and doctors, they say they need certain medication to focus better — I say to them 'if I know you got uni tomorrow, I'm not giving it to you! There's no point you doing this and messing up your studies.' "I don't want to be responsible for somebody overdosing. Even when it's weed and I have certain women call me, I ask them what kind of buzz they're looking for, because I don't want to give them something so strong that they start to panic or don't know what they're doing." Michael doesn't worry about the police seeing his ad and calling his number. "There's certain procedures I'd take, i.e. get rid of my phone, get rid of this number, and put a totally different post up." Anna doesn't worry either: "The marijuana drug laws aren't enforced too much, particularly if you're only buying small quantities," she says, "and if the police are the ones selling it to you, they can't really get you in trouble for that!" Sellers say they feel a responsibility for their customers. sometimes refusing them drugs. Photo: Wikicommons Jake, who hails from Kingston, Jamaica, has a rather different response: "If it's the police I'll put a bullet in his head. Man I don't care, bloodclot — gonna burn them! I'm going to kill him you know, fucking play around?!" Aged 36, Jake has been dealing for 19 years, and now manages 12 runners who work different shifts. He started advertising online 10 years ago via Gumtree, before switching to Craigslist six years ago. It's now the only website he uses: "Me got enough customers already, you know?" Aside from advertising on Craigslist — which accounts for 30% of his business — Jake says, "I've got a lot of links — people that I know. I was given a lot of phones that had a lot of customers on it already." Jake's runners also hand out leaflets. One of his runners explains "Not to anyone of course, only people that actually smoke." He clarifies that he wouldn't have to see them smoking, "I'd just go by their look — I can tell." If it's the police I'll put a bullet in his head. Man I don't care, bloodclot — gonna burn them! Jake has his own procedures for selling to first time buyers: "First step, I tell them to meet at a location where all my brethrens at," he says, "then if anything kicks off, I got brethrens living on that street. I send my runner to meet him face to face, with no drugs on him. My runner checks him, and if everything's kosher, he deliver the package." Like Michael, Jake says the internet connects him with clients he wouldn't otherwise encounter, and his online business is increasing. "Foreigners come to the Craigslist website — lot of people from different places," he says, "I'm doing way more business than before." In response to a Newsbeat report on the dark web's drug trade, the Home Office has said, "We've committed to spending £1.9bn on cybersecurity over the next five years, including boosting the capabilities of the National Crime Agency's National Cyber Crime Unit, increasing their ability to investigate the most serious cyber crime." It may be less expensive to tackle the drug trade that's right under their noses. All names have been changed. Craigslist were approached for comment but no response was received. ABDDCE SHORT STORY
A Long Night
After a long night of mayhem, and a mess for days, Mauri, Lucas and Tommy feel a big time relief. Even though their house is a mess and many damages have occurred, their master plan to get the cash was successful.
Mauri, Lucas, and Tommy are brothers, and they live with their aunt. Mauri was short with red hair, introverted, and was a spitting image of his mother. Lucas was the middle child, average and focused on his schoolwork, with plans to become a teacher and live with his family. Tommy was the athletic brother, known for his success in football and school, and everyone loved him, from neighborhood friends, to all the young ladies. Tommy had a laid back personality that everyone loved and was attracted to.
Their father was a postman, and worked hard to provide for the family, while also struggling with depression. He was a quiet man, and never showed much emotion, so the boys never had a close relationship with him. They just lived with him, as he took life day by day, but despite his lack of affection, he always made sure his children had food and clothes on their back.
Their mother died while giving birth to the youngest Mother. Their father spent his life missing his wife, and never got over the loss. He often spent days sitting in the living room burying his sadness in cans of beer, and looking at old pictures of them together to pass the time and remember the good times the had before she past away.
As the days go by, the three brothers notice that there father hasn't been to work and they see his health decreasing. The boys assume that life is taking a toll on him, and he's becoming worse as the days go by. They found help for their father from their church family. The boys took charge and helped him join a counseling program because they could no longer deal with seeing their father depressed and sad all the time. Months later and their father was still recovering and they move out of there aunt Lucy house and go back home just to check everything out.
After opening up many letter the boys see that there is a large past due payments on the rent. They didn't know what they were going to do Bills have piled up and the boy weren't sure how they were going to get paid. At the time the boys had no job and they were just going to school, if the bills weren't paid for they would put everything at risk and end up losing everything they have even there home.
They didn't know what to do, they applied for jobs but nobody called back, But Mauri had a call for an interview and he thought that was his chance to show up presentable and to have a great interview. He thought everything went good but he never heard from back from them and that's when the boys sat and thought how they can make the money to keep the house and pay the bills back. tommy had the idea of having a party in order to make the money to pay the bills. Everyone was skeptical about the whole idea but they had a sudden realization and thought that it wouldn't be a bad idea because all of the people tommy knew and he was known very well. The boys began to make invites that included their address and the fee to enter the function. They handed them out basically to every high school in the area. As the day got closer and closer the boys prepared the house and put away valuables. It was monday and the party was Tuesday the last day of christmas break and they were ready. Nothing was on there mind but coming up with the money so that they wouldn't be kicked out of there home. They had faith that everyone would show up to have a good time because there wasn't much to do in the area. Once Tuesday came everybody was talking about it on social media and it seemed that the party was going to be bigger than everyone thought. People from different cities mentioned and shared the party and the boys were surprised that it would be that big, so the boys moved most of the furniture into a storage right before people started to come. Soon as it hit 10:00 o'clock it was a huge rush of people, but that was fine just as long as they would hand over the 5 dollar entrance fee. The function was so packed that it filled the whole house and it was so much noise they all figured that everyone would get kicked out. Hours after loud music and people dancing police had arrived and people scattered everywhere. Jumping out of windows and rushing out of the back and the front door. The brothers were mad because they didn't want to just take everyone's money and let them party for such a short time so they thought where could they change the location. They called there aunt Lucy and asked her if they can borrow her house for the party and she was cool with it. She can to the father's house and seen the mess and wasn't really sure if she wanted all those young people relocating at her house but she wanted the boys to make the extra money. So they changed the location and everyone made their way to aunt Lucy house and it started back up like nothing ever happened.
Aunt Lucy lived in the woods by herself so there was no complains about sounds or large groups, everybody was just having a great time together and the boys were earning more and more money. They no longer had worries of how they would pay for their fathers rent and bills because it was over 500 people at their aunt Lucy's house. Having the function was a quick come up for the boys. They had money for their dad and some extra money for there self but the decided to give it to there aunt because she was nice enough to let them have a party at her house. By the end of the party the brothers were happy they let Tommy host a party because they earned the money easily. By the time there father came home from recovering they had a nice amount of money to give to him and there dad was happy to see that the boys did something productive to earn money to help around the house.
