This is not a place of honor.

(Nominative/base, accusative, dative, comitative, benefactive, and both possessives)

That's one of three gendered persons complete. In the tenseless variants, because I am still intending to mark tense directly on the pronouns somehow.

...by the time this conlang is done, I'm never going to want to work with a table again.

I'll not include an example for every form, just touch on examples of every gender, because no one wants me to write out sentences for each of twenty-eight pronoun forms, least of all myself.

The "divergent" gender has a couple different use cases—most stringently, it refers to an instance where there's a duplicate of you that used to be you, but you won't become them—i.e., the point of divergence is in your future. More lenient interpretations would allow you to use it even when the divergence is in your past, so long as you still think of yourself (or they think of you) as the "past version" of the other.

1.5th-person pronouns in use:

Gako kozei. My past self speaks. Koi lako nezio. I see my alternate-universe self. Mida lako kaiju. I lie to my future self. Zono sadu niozei. My divergent self kills my past self. Touji lako gedu. I wait for my future self.

Do you like baking? I actually did enjoy, the few times I’ve done it. I just don’t have the money and patience for to bake often. Do you believe in love at first sight?

I poo-poo the people who dismiss the idea that love could caught quickly. Love is like a fire, most time it takes quite a time to light up, but sometime when the conditions are right and people are desperate, it could happen like *snap*.

Daniel and Natasha is certainly desperate. Daniel is trying to become the good kid after the successful one got suspended from Harvard. Natasha have leave the country and have only one day to salvage herself. Then fate intervenes...

The book structure in a meandering way, with several side-sections and frequent cutback to either perspective. It’s lovely done, gimmicks tends to be presented as cleverness and nothing else, but Yoon presents here like any other format of storytelling and it makes for a non-irritating win.

Now, I could talk about how fate intervenes in strange places, or how Yoon’s unique background makes for a round reading experience, but there’s a grander sense of love that is presented here. The love for America.

Daniel and Natasha are both immigrants, Daniel’s 2nd and Natasha is 1.5th, and their views on how the country affects them impacts their day as a whole. While the main plot feels like a typical boys-meets-girl story, I think what makes the story stand out is that new perspective on how America impacts people.

What do people feel about the diversity of this place? What feelings the words ‘The American Dream’ evoke in people? The novel gives a subtle nod to this topic while presenting a engrossing love story, with funny and sad twists.

It’s a nice book. Even the sad ending is bittersweet and hopeful than not.

You should read it. The length is meaty enough to give a full day’s attention.
