Every time I play the last level of Ghostrunner I'm like "oh this is octo-expansion if Splatoon wasn't rated E" lol
Which maybe makes no sense to anyone but me and I probably sound like "guy who only played X" here but. You know. I'm gonna slap some words out about it anyway, which will not be organized at all. obviously huge GR and OE spoilers
Okay so disclaimer. it has also been a very long time since I played OE. BUT. Tartar's thing was basically about how he's sick of humanity's successor being "petty and violent" (given that society revolves around how fresh your outfit is and playing pretend war), and he wants to erase and start over with a new, perfect blend of DNA that will result a more "ideal" world.
Though not entirely the same, it came to me when I was playing the final level of GR that the Architect's goal is similar, though without the whole levelling a city thing. At the beginning/middle of the stage, his lines go something like: "Mara was wrong. Humanity must be protected. Not just from the outside world, but from itself as well. And to protect fully, I need full control." [GR: You want to enslave everyone?] "I want to unify them. There will only be one purpose, iron resolve, and a single will. Everyone will eat, sleep, breath, and breed according to the needs of the Tower. No more violence, no more conflict, no more corruption." (if you want to watch/listen to the lines, here's a playthrough of the last level. the delivery makes it better imo)(also you can listen to one of my favorite tracks in the game, it's a bop).
As I was writing this I realized 8's and Jack's storylines are... sort of similar as well? Following a voice you think is helping you, only for it to turn out that thing had other plans for your body (not you, of course. we don't need you)(see also Architect's "Why are you so selfish? This is how you can serve humanity!" line)
Anyway. my brain is mushy atm but. do you see my vision. Creating the "perfect" world through complete order... a sanitized society... something something.........
#splatoon#ghostrunner#sorry tags#has anyone but me played both of these games#I know some people didn't like the story in GR and sure it's kind of predictable#but i thought it was satisfying anyway#I love how everything comes together#i dont know if this is legible#I feel like i had more to say but my brain is leaking out my ears as we speak#maybe i'll revisit this later#oh side order i cant wait for you...#also GR2 soon!#very excited#there's a demo for GR 1/2 btw. if you're interested#1 is also available on switch but having tried the demo it's... not the ideal platform#though that's after like 30hrs on PC so maybe that has something to do with it#it's really grainy though...#and you can't change the field of view which messed me up#ok tag essay done good bye#delete later#maybe

7D anon, thank you for the reply!! Honestly the thing I like most is how much it's like...headcanon territory? You can customise the entire party, they're fully blank slates, which all lends itself very well to making them into proper ocs. I do like the dungeon crawling and sidequesting, and liked I guess the old FF style of fighting? Setting up buffs, debuffing, applying statuses and mana/health regen, deploying the ultra powerful attack when the enemy's defenses are lowered, etc etc. I love turn based combat 🥺 I did enjoy DS also and from what I gathered it's a lot more similar to EO?, but I feel like the difficulty spiked a lot in those 🥲 I'm a scrub sadly. The ones I tried were the 3DS ones with demos when the eshop was still on, I think one of them was mainline and another was a spinoff?
Ohh I see, then you might like Dragon Quest III HD! I've never played it, but it was released like a month or two ago. It plays more like 7th Dragon DS where you travel the world with your blank slate characters instead of dungeon crawling. I'm trying to think of more beginner-friendly games with blank slate characters but the ones that I know really are just... tough dungeon crawlers😭
I mean there's also Miitopia on the switch if creating characters and doing turn based combat interests you. Though it's less blank-slate since your characters are given predetermined dialogue during scenes. And its also a much goofier game. Shoutout to miitopia love that game.
ANYWAY... 7th Dragon DS was made by the same developer as early EO: Kazuya Niinou, so there's definitely more similar vibes between the two than the later EO and 7th Dragon games.
Every EO game except for EO3 is on the 3ds in some form, with EO1 and EO2 getting remakes called Etrian Odyssey 1 Untold and 2 Untold (these two games in particular have optional story modes with pre-established characters), so I'm not sure which exactly you've played...
As for spinoffs, there's only Etrian Mystery Dungeon, which has a completely different gameplay style. If you've played or seen Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, EMD plays like that :]
I cant give any exact team recommendations since most EO's have different classes, but I'd recommend having the game's respective Tank, Healer, and Mage in the team for an easier time. As well as a good frontline physical attacker (Landsknecht, Dark Hunter, Gladiator, Fencer, Pugilist, etc). The 5th member can be more flexible depending on what you feel you'll need, like a buffer (Troubadour, Sovereign, Dancer, Shaman) or debuffer/ailment user (Hexer, Harbinger).
Also a biiit of a sidenote, the first 3 Etrian Odysseys are also available on Switch & PC as the Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection. They come with a Picnic difficulty that you can switch in and out of anytime. It lowers enemy stats and raises EXP gained by a lot. It's ideal for grinding, but also if you're trying to get into the series or get used to things without dreading a gameover. And since you can switch at any time, you could experiment with harder difficulties if you feel its getting too easy or you're getting the hang of it.

When you first see what you can do with 3D printing, it’s hard to keep your imagination from running wild. Your head fills with possibilities, and you start to convince yourself that it wouldn’t take that long to make a full-sized Iron Man costume. But to make those superhero dreams come true, you’ll need a 3D printer.
Anycubic is a company that has been making 3D printers since 2015. Some reviewers have even called the company’s i3 Mega the best 3D printer under $300. But in the world of 3D printing, you have to evolve, or you get left behind.
For Anycubic, this evolution comes in the form of its new Vyper 3D FDM Printer. But is this printer truly an evolution, or is it a step back? Let’s find out.
youtube
Build Quality and Design
Like its namesake, the Vyper is a sleek and relatively silent creature with some killer surprises. The most prominent of which are the new self-leveling and heated bed features. At its core, the Vyper is an FDM 3D extrusion printer built to compete with printers like the Creality CR-6 and the Elegoo Neptune 2. Normally, the Vyper retails for $359, but Anycubic is currently offering an early-bird discount to the first 3000 buyers.

These types of budget-level hobbyist printers are ideal for folks getting started in 3D printing. That said, the Vyper will also work well for more experienced users.

Based on testing, we found it a competent unit once we dialed in all of the settings. We’ll discuss settings in just a moment, but first, let’s talk about some other features.
The Vyper offers a 245 x 245 x 260 mm print area with a removable magnetic build surface. This large-sized surface means that you can print large parts and multiple parts without issues. In addition, the textured build plate is said to be scratch-resistant and is flexible for easy removal of completed prints.

The bed on the unit is also heated. If you’re new to 3D printers, a heated bed helps keep the extruded plastic warm. This warmth allows for better print adhesion of the first layer and better overall print quality. The Vyper also includes a color screen and an easy-to-use software interface.

Hot End, Sensors, and Electronics

The Vyper is equipped with an all-metal, volcano-style hot end with what looks like a full aluminum heatsink. Additionally, there are dual cooling fans built into the hot end’s cover that help mitigate heat. Anycubic’s unique double-gear extruder feeds filament into a Bowden tube and down to the .4mm brass nozzle. The Vyper also includes a filament runout sensor.
Underneath the hood of the Vyper is a 32-bit Cortex M3 architecture high-performance main control chip capable of handling resolutions down to .1 mm. As for noise level, to minimize this snake’s hiss, Anycubic has included an integrated TMC2209 silent-stepper driver. Overall, this means the stepper motors are almost silent.
What’s Included in the Box?

Inside the box for the Vyper, you’ll get:
The Vyper base and frame
The display screen
A filament holder
4 x M4 x 45 screws with washers
3 x M5 x 14 screws
A data cable
The power cord
A section of test filament
A replacement nozzle
An SD card and USB SD card reader
An After-Sale service card
A tool kit which includes: a scraper, hex-head wrenches, box-end wrenches, a pair of snips, and a nozzle cleaning tool
The assembly instructions and tips sheet
Assembling the Anycubic Vyper

The Vyper goes together quickly. Four hex-head screws attach the base to the Z-axis frame, which includes the gantry. Three additional bolts connect the screen to the base. Unfortunately, in our demo, one of these bolts was missing, so we only used two. Once you’ve installed these seven bolts, you’ve completed most of the assembly.
After assembling the frame and the screen, you’ll need to plug in the stepper motors and other sensors. But the data cable routes these connections close to each endpoint which makes connecting everything foolproof. Additionally, Anycubic used zip-ties to secure some of the components during shipping, so you’ll also need to remove these. After that, you’ll set the proper voltage coming from your wall outlet, plug the Vyper in, and switch on the unit. It’s that easy.
Leveling and Calibrating the Vyper

As for leveling, one of the most significant selling points that Anycubic boasts is the auto-leveling of this unit. So naturally, leveling the print bed was the next step.
Essentially, you’ll tap the Prepare tile on the LCD screen and then on Leveling > Auto Leveling. Once you start the process, the hot end tracks 16 points on the print bed. This process takes about three minutes, and after leveling, you shouldn’t have to make any Z-axis adjustments.
Unfortunately, this is where hit some teething problems. Once the auto-leveling was complete, we started to print the test file, but the nozzle screeched and gouged the print bed. This was surprising because the auto-leveling showed it had correctly completed, so we adjusted the Z-axis slightly and tried to perform the leveling a second time.
This time, the hot end touched down at the lower-left corner of the print bed, then moved to the lower right corner, touched down, and then beeped three times. From there, the unit’s screen froze.

We were concerned that the scraping of the bed had caused some issues with the nozzle, so we removed the cover for the hot end to check the assembly. Sure enough, when the unit scraped, the metal strain gauge holding the hot end had shifted. We adjusted the strain gauge until the hot end was perfectly level, put everything back together, and restarted the auto-leveling process. This time, everything worked.
For someone without any mechanical experience, this issue may have resulted in a sizable amount of frustration. However, for us, it was only a minor inconvenience that offered some additional insight into how Anycubic constructed the Vyper. That said, it’s important to approach the leveling process cautiously. Don’t walk away from the printer during its first print, and don’t trust the leveling to be perfect without a possible Z-axis adjustment.
You load filament on this unit via the extruder and Bowden tube. Like setup, this was an easy process. You get the hot end up to temperature and feed the filament into the dual-gear extruder. Press a few buttons on the touchscreen, and wait until you see filament oozing out of the nozzle.
Slicer and Onboard User Interface

For the slicer, we used Cura as Anycubic included it with the Vyper’s setup materials. There were also three material-specific Cura profiles on the SD card that came with the printer: one for PLA, ABS, and TPU. The owner’s manual also claims that the Vyper also can print PETG and wood.
You control the printer via a 4.3-inch touch screen that is just a bit smaller than an iPhone. This interface isn’t exactly full color—it’s more of a monochromatic blue. The menus are easy to understand, and everything is nested in a logical order. But, the one area of the interface that was confusing was the lack of nested folder access.
Anycubic included two folders on the SD card, but neither was accessible from the touchscreen interface. If you tapped on the folders in the interface, then nothing happened on the screen.
This limitation means that if you’re using an SD card to print g-code files, you’ll need to have them in the card’s root directory. While this isn’t a massive issue if you’re only printing one or two files, if you want to keep lots of files accessible, you’ll have to ensure you have another system of organization. Folders don’t seem to work.
One of the best features of the included interface is the ability to change settings on the fly. So, for example, if you realize your nozzle is just a bit too high or your temps are too low, you can adjust these items while the print is still going. During testing, this feature saved a couple of prints.

Printing Quality on the Anycubic Vyper

As far as the slicer settings, the included Cura default PLA profile did a decent job of getting passable prints, though there was a bit of banding, and corners weren’t the sharpest. Like many other testers, we used the popular Benchy and calibration cat models available on Thingiverse to dial in the settings. We did find that, like most 3D printers, slower prints resulted in much higher quality. The default printing speed for the Vyper is 80mm/s, which may be a bit too fast, in our opinion.
With the Benchy, hull banding was minimal, though we did get a bit of over extrusion and stringing in a couple of places. We solved this by upping the extruder retraction rate and increasing the retraction speed. And also set the printer profile to print walls before infill, which helped.

There were a few gaps with the default profile settings when bridging, but nothing too extreme. Toying around a bit with infill percentages and print resolutions didn't seem to yield consistent quality results even when using the same model and settings. Some prints came out fantastic, and some had to be stopped because they weren’t going to complete correctly.

If you think that optimization is fun, and it’s interesting to dial in the settings to try and eke out as much quality as possible, then you'll appreciate this quality. But if you don’t like tinkering, you’ll need to consider calibration when looking at the Vyper.
What Do We Love About the Anycubic Vyper 3D Printer?

The novice-friendly setup and interface are two notable features here. While leveling didn’t go right immediately, everything functioned great once we worked the kinks out. We've managed to get through almost an entire roll of filament during testing, with around an 80% success rate.
Additionally, from opening the box to printing your first test print takes less than a half-hour, and if you’ve put together and set up these types of printers before, it may go even faster.
The heated bed and flexible spring-steel build plate are also exceptional on the Vyper. These features make removing projects easy, and the textured surface didn’t seem to pick up any fingerprints.
Noise on the unit measured at around 59 dB while fans were at 100%. Of course, turning the fans down would cut that noise out a bit. But, while the fans may be the noisiest part of the unit, once you leave the room, you can barely hear the Vyper. It's also nice to see a wide variety of filament choices that you can use for this printer.
Finally, once you get the settings dialed in, you can achieve fantastic prints with minimal effort. It's shocking some of the prints you can create without the need for babysitting.
What Could Anycubic Improve?

Because the auto-leveling is the main selling point of the Vyper, it was a bit disappointing for this process to go so wonky at the beginning of our testing. Given that this is a demo unit, we always assume that quality will represent the pinnacle of the specific design. So to have this unit gouge the scratch-resistant plate out of the box makes us a little cautious.
Another thing that was concerning with the Vyper was the lack of accessibility to the hot end components. Customization and 3D printing are almost synonymous, and many makers want easy access to parts like the heater block and thermistor.
For the Vyper, the hot end components were tethered in place by the data cable connection. Even after removing the bolts for the cover, some flexible adhesive had to be picked out of the electrical connector. Without doing so, the data cable would not release, which prevented the removal of the cover.

While this might not be an issue for some, for us, accessing the hot end to diagnose the leveling issue was the difference between a working unit and a non-working unit.
In our opinion, preventing access to the physical elements of a commonly customized component doesn't make much sense. And what if a thermistor dies or a nozzle breaks inside the heating block?
We also had a slight issue with the tool drawer. Two rear magnets hold this drawer in place, and it’s a good storage place for having tools close at hand. But for some reason, on our demo unit, the drawer would not close completely. Instead, it stuck out about a half-inch. After some testing, we found the magnets on the drawer installed opposite of their intended polarity.
So, we used a small screwdriver to remove these magnets from the drawer, then reversed them. Then, the drawer snapped shut. The orientation of these magnets is a minor detail, but again, it reinforces the assumption that quality control might not have been great during factory assembly.
Finally, dialing in this machine was done over several days through trial and error. With Anycubic’s included printer profiles and recommended software, one expects the unit to be almost plug-and-play. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case here.
Can You Repair the Vyper?

Except for the mainboard and the connector mentioned above on the hot end, all of the components of this printer are easily swappable. None of the motors or switches are concealed. Likewise, the nozzle, extruder, Bowden tube, belts, and plate bearings are all on display if something goes wrong. So yes, knowledgeable 3D printer mechanics can fix things if something happens outside of the 1-year warranty period.
Brave souls could attempt removing the hot end, but you may void the warranty if you open the Vyper up. So, do so at your own risk.
Our Verdict: Should You Buy The Anycubic Vyper 3D Printer?

Yes, but with a few caveats. For a first printer, this unit, like its namesake, might provoke fear unless you’re careful. Be prepared to do some calibration, and don’t expect that you’ll be able to take the unit out of the box as a first-timer and have everything run perfectly. To us, Anycubic designed this printer for those who are comfortable with tuning. That’s not to say that this printer is terrible. It’s terrific, but newbies might not appreciate the steep learning curve here.
On the other hand, once you have adjusted everything the way you like it, the Vyper can generate some genuinely magical prints with a high level of detail. To us, the Vyper would be an excellent fit for a second printer or for someone who would like to add it to an existing farm.
For us, the Vyper is a fine 3D printer with a few kinks that users need to account for. Additionally, Anycubic could improve quality control. Granted, these issues aren’t bad enough missteps to warrant a poor rating. On the whole, the Vyper is a superb printer that might have been perfect if a little more attention was paid to the details.

The plugin has a well-thought-out default configuration that's good enough for most use cases. For instance, in the General Settings tab, you can see that it supports responsive design right out of the box.
The plugin also tries to apply various optimizations to ensure that the pages you create with it have minimal load times. For instance, it uses only the Latin script subset of Google fonts by default. To support other scripts, all you need to do is change the Google fonts subsets option.
In the Role Manager tab, you may notice that this plugin is available only for the pages of your WordPress site. If you want it to be available for your posts too, select Custom in the Post types list and enable the post option.
After you make the changes, scroll down and click on the Save Changes button.
Lastly, if you want to customize the look and feel of WPBakery Page Builder's content elements, switch to the Design Options tab and check the Use custom design field. Once you do so, you'll be able to change the default colors, margins, and widths the plugin uses.
3. Using the Back-End Editor
This is a key step in this Visual Composer tutorial. WPBakery Page Builder comes with two powerful editors: a back-end editor and a front-end editor. They're both accessible only inside a page or a post. Therefore, for now, I suggest you create a new page by going to Pages > Add New.
In the page creation interface, you'll be able to choose which editor you want to use. Start by clicking on the Backend Editor button to open the back-end editor.
Using this editor, you can easily add a variety of commonly-used elements to the page. WPBakery Page Builder offers simple elements such as text blocks, images, and separators. It also offers more advanced ones such as Facebook "Like" buttons, Google Maps, charts, and animated carousels.
For ease of access, the elements are divided into four different categories: content, social, structure, and WordPress widgets.
As the name suggests, content elements are elements that you'd usually use to create the contents of a page or a post. Similarly, social elements are those that make it easy for users to share your page on social platforms. Structure elements, on the other hand, are for more advanced users, who are comfortable writing code. They allow you to directly add raw HTML and JavaScript to your page.
To add an element, all you need to do is press the Add Element button and select the desired element.
Alternatively, you can press the Add Text Block button to directly add some text to the page.
Note that if you aren't satisfied with the default look of an element, you can always modify its styles by switching to the Design Options tab.
After you've added a few elements, you may notice that each element has a toolbar associated with it, containing a few buttons. These buttons display intuitive icons and allow you to perform important operations such as dragging and dropping the element to change its location, duplicating it, deleting it, or editing its contents.
4. Using the WYSIWYG Front-End Editor
The back-end editor is ideal for long, complex pages that contain lots of elements. While using it, you need to press the Preview button whenever you want to see what your page is going to look like when it's published.
If you choose to use the WYSIWYG front-end editor instead, you get to work with the final appearance of your page right from the beginning. You can always seamlessly switch from one editor to the other, so scroll up and press the Frontend Editor button to open the new editor.
In this editor, you'll see the toolbars associated with an element only when you hover over the element. These toolbars and the functionality they offer are very similar to those offered by the back-end editor.
Additionally, the front-end editor allows you to see what the page looks like on various screen sizes. It also allows you to continue editing the page in any screen size you prefer.
5. Using Templates
Another important aspect in learning how to use WPBakery page builder is using templates. WPBakery Page Builder allows you to convert any page or post you create with it into a template. By using this feature, you can minimize the amount of repetitive work you do while creating pages for your WordPress site.
To save the current layout of your page as a template, open the Templates dialog, give a name to the template, and press the Save Template button.
You aren't limited to working with your own templates. This plugin comes with a large template library, which is updated regularly. To open the library, switch to the Template Library tab and press the Access Library button.
The library, as you can see, contains a wide variety of premium-quality layout templates. All of them are available to you for free. You must, however, activate your WPBakery Page Builder license before you can use them.
Broadly, the templates can be divided into two categories: templates for entire pages and templates for individual, independent portions of a page. For example, the About Page template is a template that helps you create a complete "about us" page. But the Hero Section template only creates a hero section for you.

The following blog post, unless otherwise noted, was written by a member of Gamasutra’s community. The thoughts and opinions expressed are those of the writer and not Gamasutra or its parent company.
(Reposted from http://ift.tt/2o5mTTb)
When preparing for PAX East I saw this article from another indie dev, found it quite useful, and thought I'd share my experience, also as a first time exhibitor, complete with lot of interesting numbers.
My Booth
I exhibited Splody, my multiplayer action game that supports any number of players. I wanted to showcase this, so opted for a larger 20'x10' booth and planned on having both an 8 player station and a 4 player station. I used two 55" TVs, hooked up to tiny, cheap UltraSlim computers, with wireless controllers for all. One TV I put farther in the back, on a lower table the convention provided, so that I could get 4 sitting and 4 standing in front of it. The other TV I put on a stand, as high up as is comfortable to look at, closer to the aisle, so that people walking by had something to look at.
The Two Stations
Though they were both running the same thing, we demoed the game slightly differently at our two stations, and, unfortunately, I have no idea which made better impressions. The smaller station (up front on the right) had only 4 controllers hooked up, and almost always got a set of new players simultaneously, which gave the person working that station time to both explain all of the basics, and go into what each of the powerups did, for those not familiar with them. The larger station, with 8 controllers, we tended to get people into the game much quicker, and not hesitate to add new passersby mid-match. This led to larger, more entertaining games, but meant a lot of people got only the barest intro to the game "you're the guy in the lower right, press A to drop a bomb, don't blow yourself up, go!" and then, later "after you're dead, you can still place bombs!". Depending on the person's gaming experience, I think this often worked quite well, but once in a while left people baffled, or with half of an explanation which then got aborted when a match ended and one group left. Since we had so many controllers, it was easy to get spectators to join in - their friend, or child, is playing, and we just hand them a controller, and they almost always enjoyed themselves.
We found that, somewhat to my surprise, even with 12 total controllers, we often had almost all of them in use, with people standing behind and watching as well. It helps that our controls are simple, and the game is quite entertaining to watch.
I made the questionable decision of using only wireless controllers, since untangling a mess of 8 controllers constantly and threading wires between sitting players did not sound fun. This actually worked out great - I was afraid some of them would disappear, but none were stolen. We had to switch batteries on about half of them each day, but the biggest issue was range - a few of the controllers would often flake out if more than about 6 feet from the receiver, possibly when their batteries were getting low, or possibly because there were so many electronics in the expo hall. It was only occasionally an issue, and Splody handles people dropping in and out pretty seamlessly mid-game, so we just handed them a new controller, and swapped the batteries before handing it out again. The second biggest problem was people don't like using controllers with lights off - there are only 4 lights on the Microsoft Xbox 360 controllers, so controller numbers 5-8 don't have any lights on at all, so we would often hand someone a controller and they'd try to turn it on, sometimes take the batteries out and put them back in, then hand it back saying it's dead, and we'd have to hand it back saying, nope, it's working, see, you're that guy there.
Why go to PAX?
Before going to PAX, I thought long and hard about why I was going to PAX. It's important to know your primary and secondary goals, and orient your strategy and how you pitch people to those. For me, the primary goal was exposure - this means getting as many people playing and talking about the game as possible, especially streamers and press, as well as getting mailing list sign ups. The secondary goal was sales, as I was selling Steam keys there at the convention, however I realized that even if I had what I considered an incredible number of sales, it would still only cover a very small fraction of my costs, so sales were an extra bonus, not the primary goal.
Using this, we tried to make sure that, after getting people to try the game, we let everyone know when the game was releasing (next week!), and that they could take a card or sign up for the mailing list and get a pin.
Other common goals for exhibiting are getting feedback on an early version of a game (not for me, this was my release version), brand awareness (not a big deal for me, as this is currently my first and only game), and business contacts (publishers, etc).
The other reason to go to PAX - it's fun to play my game with people, and watch them play my game!
Getting stuff there
After looking at the exorbitant rates for renting TVs, TV stands, and seating at the convention, I decided it would be cheaper to buy my own - it was often half the price, or less, to buy something than rent it. However, shipping a large amount of things, including two 55" TVs, is not simple nor cheap. It would have been somewhat cheaper to buy the TVs in Boston, and just ship them back (or leave them there!), however I wanted to have everything in hand to "beta test" my booth with friends in my living room before shipping it out, so that I could relax knowing all of the hardware will be working just fine with each other.
Taking advice from Indie Boothcraft, I purchased a Quick-Crate, however I needed their largest to fit the 55" TVs, and the cost of shipping the empty crate to me was more than the cost of the crate itself. I'm not convinced it's worth the large cost, however I have not thoroughly investigated alternatives, and, now that I have it, I will probably continue using it for many conventions to come.
Staff
I'm a one-man company, so I did not have any default people to bring along, so I had to rely on friends and a friend of a friend (well, WoW-raid-leader-of-a-friend). I aimed for getting a total of 5 people (ideally already on the East Coast) working my booth, but ended up with 4, one of which I flew from the West Coast where I am located, and most of my friends are. Despite some illness and one of the volunteers having never met any of us in person before, everything worked out quite fantastically. Setting up the booth took a little less than 5 hours, with anywhere from 1 to 3 of us working on it as people's flights arrived. I'd set up the complicated stuff (TV stand, TVs, computer) before shipping it out, but no one else had seen any of it before, so I think we did pretty well. Two people would have been plenty. Tearing down the booth and packing it back into its crate took 3 of us 1 hour and 20 minutes.
We almost always had 3 people manning the booth - one at each station, getting people into the game, explaining controls, etc, and one person at our table in the middle handling mailing list signups and sales, tournament signups, giving out pins, and generally answering questions. The 4th person got to take a break, although we were all so engaged in working our booth that we did not see much of the rest of the convention - I tried walking around a bit, but it was just sensory overload and I decided my breaks needed to involve just relaxing after that.
Tournaments
We ran a daily tournament for a bomb plushie. The tournament had hourly matches which had anywhere from 3 to 8 people show up (often if it was 5 minutes before the hour and 4 or more people just finished playing, it was a very easy sell to get them to stick around for the tournament). The top 2 from each hourly match were entered into the daily finals which took place at 5PM, and we got anywhere from 6 to 10 people showing up for the finals (often one of the hourly tournaments just had no one sign up, but Saturday was busy). The people who won the tournaments often came by multiple times in the day, sometimes with different friends in tow, to practice and play with their friends, which was great to see. I think I will do tournaments again, because they were a lot of fun, though it's hard to say if they made much customer impact.
Our 10 player tournament finals on Saturday
Expenses - $13,640
Ah, finally time for the numbers!
The Booth
$3500 - 20'x10' booth (a 10'x10' would cost half of that)
Included - "Booth Package" of carpeting, black drape behind the booth, and 1 table
$759 - Double-layered carpet padding - taking the advice I'd heard at PAXDev, I ordered the softest padding available for my booth, which meant me and my volunteers were not as sore at the end of the day, and by the end of the day attendees enjoyed being in our booth just because their feet suddenly felt better. Would buy again!
Travel
$1019 - 3 flights (two of us came from Silicon Valley, one from Montreal, and one drove up from New York on his own)
$2146 - hotel - 1 night someplace cheap, 4 nights fairly close to the convention center. Not knowing exactly how many people I'd have to be putting up, and with a lot of rooms unavailable, I got a 2-bedroom suite near the convention center, which worked comfortably for the 3 of us who stayed in it. Could have found a cheaper place if booking earlier, or willing to be farther away, but being comfortable, sleeping, and resting are very important when exhibiting all day! Some days it was too cold and windy to walk the 5 blocks to the convention center, so we took a taxi anyway, so perhaps being so close was not as important as it is in warmer locations.
$330 - Taxis. About half of this was just getting to/from the airport, the rest was going to/from the convention center and our dinner outings.
$54 - Dinner delivery for my volunteers
Shipping - I shipped a crate containing most of my booth, totaling approximately 500 pounds (almost half of the weight is the crate itself), from California to Boston.
$643 - 58"×46"×34" reusable Quick-Crate (much more expensive than the advertised price because, of course, they needed to ship the crate)
$1419 - Round-trip freight shipping
$754 - "Material Handling" fees - the convention charges a fee of about $150 per 100 lbs (rounded up, of course, so my crate was 495 lbs) for any freight received (even if shipped through the official convention shipping), and for that fee they will deliver your crate to your booth before the setup day, remove and store the (mostly empty) crate during the convention, return the crate to your booth after the convention has ended, and handle getting it picked up by your preferred shipping line. They do not allow you to handle your own freight or hire people to do so, however anything you can carry in on your own is not subject to this charge.
$14 - Tarp to keep crate dry, both while packing it in my driveway, and for long-term storage.
Furniture and Electronics - I could have rented a lot of this, or brought my own, so I'm providing a breakdown of what I paid, an estimate of the shipping cost (ignoring the cost of the Quick-Crate itself, just the shipping and material handling fees to get it there and back), and what it would have cost to rent from the official rental service (if available).
Item Price I paid Estimated S&H Cost to rent 55" 1080p TVs (2) $623 $829 $1,050 TV Stand $95 $297 $245 Seating x4 $93 $211 $524 Bar Table $71 $195 $190 Bar Stool already owned $78 $202 Whireboard $70 $102 N/A 12x Wireless Controllers already owned carry on N/A 4x Wired Controllers (backup plan) $95 $281 N/A 2 UltraSlim Computers $419 Cables & Accessories $43 Banner Lights $47 Banner Stands $50 $55 N/A Misc - $125 N/A Totals $1,606 $2,173 $2,211
Though the cost to rent a lot of these things seems exorbitant, the cost to ship them was quite comparable, although a straight comparison is not quite fair since a bunch of things (banner stands, computers, etc) had no rental option, and I'd have to ship (or pay a couple hundred dollars in airline fees) to bring them as well.
If this were the only convention I ever go to, I definitely should have just rented, however, if I go to other conventions (and geographically closer ones, like PAX West or South), I think I will have saved money by purchasing everything I needed. The relatively hassle-free setup that comes from having all of your own equipment and knowing it will work is also worth something.
Print, Media, Swag
$169 - 750 Buttons from Pure Buttons, we went through around 600 of these, giving them out to anyone who signed up for the mailing list or asked nicely.
$720 - Artwork design for banners and cards, including a print resolution version of my company and game logos. Being a 1-man company, and having no art skills, I rely on contract artists and I got the company that did my game art to work on my booth art as well.
$99 - Custom Bomb Plushies to use as tournament prizes from HeroWaresNSupplies on Etsy
$46 - 2000 cards with the game logo from OvernightPrints, we went through a little under 1000 of these.
$187 - Banners from AllStateBanners - One 4'x5' banner for the back plus two 31"x71" banners for up front. I paid a little extra for these due to not having the final banner designs ready until a little later and was unable to take advantage of their free shipping.
Misc
$58 - Insurance. PAX and the convention center require you to have general liability insurance. This was a bit of a pain to find online (insurance people seem to want to actually talk to you on the phone), but Hiscox worked for me (you can add the required additional insureds (e.g. the Convention Center) after purchasing the policy).
$68 - Last minute shopping in Boston. This includes a cheap table from Target that we used (combined with a black bed sheet) to keep most of our stuff out of view and have place for volunteers to rest, a hand sanitizer for people to use after using controllers or shaking hands, and a bunch of supplies for the volunteers in the booth including fruit, granola bars, soda.
$60 - Airline extra checked item fee to bring the banners with me (they were printed after shipping the crate).
Things that came in handy and other notes
Carpet padding - did I mention this was great and worth the cost?
Hand sanitizer - for us, and attendees appreciated it as well
Black curtains and sheets - ended up needing to drape the "draped table" (it was white on top), one of my stools, and the table I picked up at the last minute, the sheets also worked for packing things more firmly in the crate
Curtain rod - for hanging the big banner in the back, hung much nicer than other booth's banners which were just tied up
Battery tester and lots of batteries - as we learned on the first day, a lot of the time a controller disconnected because of range, not low batteries, so it was good to be able to test the "dead" batteries we removed whenever a controller complained, and find that 80% were actually still good
Dealing without internet - with no reliable internet access on the show floor, we set my Square app to offline mode for credit card transactions, and used the MailChimp Subscribe app for mailing list signups in offline mode as well, and had no issues
Fruit and easy snacks - it was really easy to completely forget to eat when working the booth, so having a healthy snack we could eat during a couple minute break was great
Results
Since Splody goes on sale on Steam next week, I cannot measure any bump in sales, but I can share all of my other numbers!
119 Steam Keys sold, given to press, given to streamers, etc. We were asking for $6 a copy at the booth, but also doing a "4-pack" (for $18, though people often paid $20), and doing a "pay what you want" ("if you're not going to buy it until it's half off on Steam, give me $3 right now, or, if you want to support an indie developer, give us more!"), which got a few $10s and a few $4 sales.
~900 business-card sized game cards distributed (including the 119 with Steam Keys taped to the back)
~600 1" buttons given out
230 mailing list signups
I can say that I was happy with how many people saw the game, played it, and enjoyed it. It was great meeting people and seeing them enjoy what I've been working hard on.
And, finally, I release next week, go add it to your wishlist on Steam!
