She walks into the living room, arms crossed TIGHTLY over her chest — for the past week and a half, she’s been doing nothing but ignoring Kai’s requests to apologise to her mother. Tension in the house had been rising, with Odette entirely flying under Ava’s radar. Turned up chin, turned down eyes, slammed bedroom doors and tersely silent dinner conversations; they’d transitioned into the norm. And then, with promise of a new skateboard without a dime of her own money contributed was placed on the table, if she please just said she was sorry, Ava had only waited three hours before cracking. So now, directly staring at her mother for the first time in what felt like a YEAR: “ I just want to PREFACE — ” New PSAT word, at least hours locked into her room had given her a boost in that department. “ — this with the fact I’m not cracking first, and that Kai is making me say this to you. So, sorry I called you a b-i-t-c-h. ” She didn’t want to risk releasing the word again, though she’d heard Odette herself curse like a sailor in two different languages. “ So ... there. HAPPY? ” It was the weakest an apology could have POSSIBLY been, aside from tacking on that she was only sorry Odette had been offended by it, but it was the closest Ava was willing to toe the line of GENUINE apology until she got one first. That had NEVER happened before, in smaller spats between the two, but with prized possession lost, Ava was more than willing to stand her ground. / @vampiresmiled !

@vampiresmiled​ / the bell rang again on the wall above her, but by now she’d grown used to the PERIODIC and shrill shriek, hardly even flinching at the noise. it was the third forty-five minute segment of the day she’d sat in the stupid chair outside of the stupid principal’s office. it wasn’t her fault david flannery had told her girls can’t skateboard, and it wasn’t her fault that she had the guts to skip class and do tricks in the hallway to prove him differently. and it wasn’t HER fault that they were right next to the boy’s bathroom when they were caught and she ran right into the hall monitor, and he pretended to be going to the bathroom. and it wasn’t her fault she wasn’t a snitch. she’s picking already chipped polish of nails bitten down to nubs when her mother walks in, familiar presence by her side for once not a comfort. suspended for two days. she was DEAD. eyes look up from her hands, backpack grabbed from the floor. “ uh, hey mom. fancy seeing you here. ”
