UMK 2024 Song Review - Sara Siipola

The hype is very real around Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK), the Finnish national selection for Eurovision and the race to Malmö continues with a ballad this time!

Sara Siippola - Paskana

Sara Siipola is fairly a new name in the sky of Finnish female artists. She kind of popped out of nowhere making a record deal with Sony Music in 2019 and releasing her first singles which were fairly successful. She also released her debut album "Kaunis Kun Itken" two years later and last year she was seen in popular music tv-show "Tähdet, Tähdet".

Still never heard of of her before and the artist announcement did nothing to me.

Paskana is power song that gives no hope. It's very raw lyrically and vocally.

It's a modern ballad with immediate hook. The song itself is not a traditional power ballad but does instrumentally push its boundaries. The electronic beat has 80's sound which also reminds many of the Russian girl duo t.A.T.u's sound. R'n'b beat separates it from an average ESC ballad and makes this super easy to listen.

Sara's voice can be compared to Amy Winehouse's being capable of interpreting the painful text brilliantly. The topic of being "paskana" which is translated as fucking wreck, is easily relatable. Social media quickly filled on Monday night with heartfelt comments from people around the world crying and feeling this song.

This is simply captivating - you can't pass this without stopping to listen to this and feeling what she sings. This will translate across language barriers.

ESC doesn't allow swearing so in case of winning UMK Sara would have to find another title for her song which might be a difficult task. There have been hopes of her translating this into English or pieces of it but I do hope this masterpiece remained in Finnish. Also this would differ quite a lot from our previous ESC entries. The last time we heard a female ballad from Finland was in 2017 with NormaJohn.

In a scenario where she didn't win UMK she might be the next Bess (Ram pam pam, 2022) or Kuumaa (Ylivoimainen, 2023) which either were the winning acts but made the biggest hits of their careers with the help of UMK. Reactions have been positive everywhere you go and her UMK videoclip has already been viewed over 240 000 (more than Sexmane) times. She's on her way to stardom!

It's not that much of a problem I guess, just some normal young adult shit.

I've lived a pretty good life so far, I'll say most of the time I was happy, but I think it all started when my first dog died I guess?

I mean, do you know how hard it is to see your dog being ran over by a car? And they didn't even stopped to see what was going on.

I think my parents went to throw her away or something. That night, they came home like the dog never existed, not like they cared, they were rich.

Rich but not very generous, well, the first time I asked for money, about a month after my dog died, my mom gave me 1800 $, and my dad 1300. And I became greddy.

I asked for more and more, and one day they just stopped, they said they didn't wanna give me any money anymore, until my other dog died, the same way as my first one, and that's when I understood: to get what you want, use money.

And that's what I did. I studied finances to work at the bank, and when you live alone, you get a shit tone of money.

I bought a house, and a car, but nothing was very satisfying me. And one day, I got into a fight with my sister. She insulted me and, i got so angry, I assaulted her. I beat her but she did the same to me. But our relationship didn't die from that.

That night was the night everything changed

I went to a bar nearby to clear my mind. I never went to that kinda place before. It was not like a club, people were dancing, alcohol in hands, people making out, and that's when I knew what was missing in my life: fun.

That night when everything changed, was the first night of my problem.

That night was my first time drinking alcohol, it was so addictive. That night I tested drugs, and that shit ruins you, one time you take it, you can't get enough. And of course, I met a guy, pretty good looking, so I just took him home.

And I did that for several years: working at the bank the day, trying to be the perfect daughter, but dancing queen the night, each time coming back with a new fling.

But one day, my sister came visit my parents we a new someone, her fiance. After our fist fight, we definitely didn't talk for a while. And a competition started between us. Who was richer, prettier, nicer. But when she brang her perfect men, I was trapped. I couldn't just stop my nightly routine, that what was keeping my sane, but I couldn't let my sister win.

The next day, I got a boyfriend, and the next years, I brang him with me for family reunion. Not that I was a bad girlfriend or anything, we spent time with eachother, had our moments, but I still had my nightly adventure. We had a silented agreement, he didn't complain or actually,tried to know what I was doing every night, and I gave him a 10 000$ cheque every now and then!

But one day, he just left, leaving me with a weird excuse. And when I tried to contact me again, he had me a restraining order, for 3 years. And that's when the real shit started. At this year, my life changed again, but not for the same reasons. Clearly not.
