my many feelings on youtubers (and other content creators) reading fanfiction about themselves: an unnecessary thread
lmao i had a lotta feelings on twitter. y’all go ahead and follow me here  /)>w>
(image descriptions/transcript under the cut!)

[tweet 1:] my many feelings on youtubers (and other content creators) reading fanfiction about themselves: an unnecessary thread (1) [Image: GIF of Salem from the 90s Sabrina TV series with the text “SORRY FOR THE LONG POST”]
[tweet 2:] yes yes, it’s all ~cringey~ or w/e but anyone who knows me knows that i could not care less about cringe culture most of the time, whatever is ~cringey~ is just people enjoying themselves, or harmless teasing. why would i find that displeasing or embarrassing in any way? (2)
[tweet 3:] i’m serious. not only can i straight-face whatever viral cringe compilation is thrown at me, sometimes i will actively endorse whatever cringe-worthy activity is happening i once wanted to participate in a shrek!au zine (3)
[tweet 4:] to clarify: i might be considered to have weird tastes. i’ve always liked things that are exceptionally stupid or extremely off-putting just as much as i love most commercialized pop media. so yes, my own personal preferences come into play (4)
[tweet 5:] and i could get into a whole spiel about the ~cringey~ being the abject that at least contributes to identity construction. the whole “i am /this/, because i know i am not /that/, nor do i /want/ to be that” + other things about the abject that people want to ignore/exclude (5)
[tweet 6:] but that’s a whole other convo LOL i’m here to talk about why i’m always so embarrassed and opinionated to watch youtubers and other creators reading real person fanfiction about themselves, most often of which is p0rn0graph*c (6) (took me gd 6 tweets i promise i have a point!)
[tweet 7:] obviously, there is something really embarrassing about seeing people i idolize/look up to/admire doing something embarrassing i don’t want /them/ to do something that makes them feel bad, so /i/ feel bad when i see them go through it (7)
[tweet 8:] however, one of my biggest problems has, and will likely continue to be, that these content creators are profiting off of and are humiliating a piece of work that was provided and produced for free by someone who was simply passionate over a story they wanted to tell (8)
[tweet 9:] any writer, fanfiction authors included, knows that writing is gd hard work. it takes time and a /lot/ of energy to write even a short story if you think otherwise, go ahead and write me a 1.5k short story right now completely for free, for no reason other than you want to (9)
[tweet 10:] so to have something that we create put into a spotlight to be made fun of and even /profited/ off of when that isn’t the intention is awful what more if it’s read by people who are likely the /last/ human beings we'd ever want reading it (10)
[tweet 11:] i /love/ fanfiction. i love creating it. i love reading it. i love having discussions about it, esp with people who are not at all involved in the culture is it really so much that i want these discussions done with respect? even for what likely is poorly written garbage? (11)
[tweet 12:] /i/ know that there is a large and vast spectrum to fanfiction. those not involved with fanfiction may not. but is it so hard for non-ficcers to have some respect for even the lowest tier of creative works fanfiction provides? (12)
[tweet 13:] the same way i hate seeing amateur artists being made fun of because a work they posted on deviantart goes viral for how crude it is, i hate when celebs/influencers make fun of fanfiction for how p0rn0graph*c or ~stupid it seems (13)
[tweet 14:] and to not only humiliate these works/authors, but to profit off the humiliation as well how could i ever find that okay? how could i ever respect that, even if it was for the best intentions (entertainment or otherwise)? (14)
[tweet 15:] maybe i’m just “too sensitive” bc i base a large part of my identity around it but i think there’s something wrong with reducing a work to simply how bad it is, making money off of making fun of it, and having someone you idolize be in on the whole thing (15)
[tweet 16:] idk man. i got Feelings™ if you made it this far LMAO CONGRATS FRIEND AND THANK YOU (ᵕ̣̣̣̣̣̣ ω ᵕ̣̣̣̣̣̣) (16 /end) [Image: Blanche from Golden Girls toasting her glass with the text “THANK YOU FOR LISTENING”]
