...Do you ever see people critiquing specific word usage in novels and wonder if they know that language can be used in fun and figurative ways? And that this is half the joy of writing?

An example off the top of my head - if I say ‘He gave a whisper of a smile’, it does not mean that the smile is literally whispering; it means that the word ‘whisper’ invokes a sense of smallness, due perhaps to subtlety or shyness, and that is something I want connected to your mental envisioning of this dude’s smile. 

Saying ‘But that makes no sense; a smile and a whisper are two different things’ misses the point e n t i r e l y

indoor plants or gardens: depends on whether we’re talking in my place, or everywhere. If everywhere, both. If my place, none: i can’t be arsed to take proper care. also i’ve tried to have plants in pots and i tried to Do Things Right and it didn’t work out, so... i gave up. know thyself and thy limits etc

cloud-watching or star-gazing  both yes both, as long as i have proper eye-protection from the sun for option 1.

water or fire ...uuuh.... watching a fire in a hearth etc (i mean, not Nero style, obv) is great? but the ocean too? i don’t understand T_T

paperback or hardcover hardcover: too heavy. but i often use an e-reader.

running or hiking: omg neither. running means dying lungs, Extremely Painful Knees, etc very quickly. Hiking is... idk, everything is bad: i get all the branches in my face, all the rocks start moving when i step on them, etc. Put me in a city and i can walk for hours; put me in nature and i #suffer. i have also been somewhat traumatized by people claiming “Oh come one it’s a small easy walk not even a HIKE” and it was in fact climbing up a small mountain with very narrow, gravely, unstable paths hugging the side of the mountain and if you stumbled, ti meant a fall so SOMEHOW i have become Extra Wary of the word “hiking”

sleeping with socks or without socks although with wouldn’t be a problem. i use a hot water bottle in winter.

fruit or vegetables fruit only if i can use them in a salad, or cook them LIKE a veg.

Blood Ties: For The King WIP Intro

Hello! Some of you may have seen details of this around the writeblrverse if you hang out in my corner at all, but I have changed my NaNo wip again and am now working on the second book in the Blood Ties Trilogy - For The King. Oh yes, that’s right, courtesy of my friend, my trilogy is now named! And ridiculously aptly.

This is my third NaNoWriMo project (trust me, that’s a lot more frustrating to me) after For The Crown is back in development to stamp out plot holes like whack-a-mole and Skillset is back in research mode.

You’re probably wondering what the hell For The King is about, so let’s dive in.

Stats:

Perspective: First Person Limited, multiple (Ryvaeryn and Elthian)

Stage: First draft

Genre: High fantasy/adventure

Word count so far: 15k

Expected work count: 150k

Expected finish date: end of January 2020

Timeline: For The King begins about two months after For The Crown ended.

Here we go:

When newly crowned King Elthian is kidnapped the day of his wedding, his fiance, Ryvaeryn, embarks on a cross country adventure to save him. We follow Ryvaeryn, accompanied by Joal, Orrian and Kalen as they traverse the mainland to save the King. We also follow the trials of imprisoned Elthian and his unlikely allies as our enemy, led by Tris, attempts to break his spirit. And he comes damn close.

Ryvaeryn meets Lowe, her old partner and Skye, her old friend on their journey, facing obstacles and trials set by Tris and his allies. We discover the true identities of Elthian’s three inmates, and learn what Tris and the Snow Cats have planned for Mantha. And why.

For The King is significantly darker than For The Crown. Ryvaeryn and Elthian face their trials alone and we test their characters and independence. An argument before they were torn apart leaves them both reeling in guilt, and it’s up to their friends, allies and own sheer will to reunite that pushes them forward.

 Who are these people, you ask? Good question.

Ryvaeryn, MC: 27, tiger shapeshifter, Queen-in-waiting. Ryvaeryn discovered a lot about herself in For The Crown. She is still the temperamental, no-bullshit Ryn, prone to be commanding even though she isn’t in charge yet. Since the attacks and since losing her right eye she has been tamed a bit. She is an unofficial mentor to Pab, the ten year old orphan ward to the crown she befriended in FTC. Ryn has some trouble with her temper, which slowly becomes more prominent. She bonds with Orrian, and part of her arc is forgiving Joal for his past actions. Ryn wants justice, needs acknowledgement, and her focus quickly becomes her King. He needs her. She won’t fail him again.

Elthian, MC: 30, lion shapeshifter, new King. Elthian usurped his father in FTC (we all saw it coming…), but his manner of succession has left his people divided, and they don’t approve of his bride. Elthian struggles with his internal battle of what the people want versus what he wants, which is a decline from his progress in FTC. Elthian wants peace, needs approval, and his focus becomes survival and escape. Ryn needs him. He won’t fail her again.

This is a lot of information, so I’ve put the rest of the character intros below the cut. Below that is the tag list.

Joal, Secondary: 31, wolf shapeshifter, scholar. Joal is struggling with the fallout of FTC. He messed up, Ryn still doesn’t trust him, and Elthian doesn’t have time to help. We discover a lot more about Joal’s family in For The King, which you will be surprised by, and which is part of the reason for his gloominess early in the novel. Joal wants his family back, he needs someone to love him, and he’ll make up for his mistakes on the way to save his closest friend. Again.

Orrian: Secondary: 36, lion shapeshifter, philanthropist and Elthian’s older brother. Orrian took a hard hit in For The Crown and now lives with chronic pain in his left shoulder. He will find pain management when I choose to give it to him. His goal when his father was in charge was to protect Elthian. Now their father is gone and Elthian is king and has Ryn, Orrian is still support, but searching for another meaning. Orrian wants stability, needs meaning, and will be the least injured in this book. I felt kinda bad for him.

Kalen, Secondary: 33, bear shapeshifter (though I’m toying with the idea of making him human), lord and Ryn’s close friend. Kalen is the ultimate best friend. He reveals his past trauma to Elthian in FTC, which he uses to fuel his desire to help people. Kalen takes a few hits in For The King, but he’s still a teddy bear. He also is reunited with Skye during this book. She is… different. But they are still super close. Kalen wants peace, needs acceptance, and to bring his friends home safe. A bit worse for wear.

Jena, Tertiary: 25, human, prisoner and not someone you want to upset. After messing up in FTC, Jena is a prisoner of Tris, like Elthian, but tries her best not to interact with the others. Jena makes some progress, but whether that sticks is up to her. She wants success, needs love, and receives… something.

Vall, Second/Tertiary: 48, shapeshifter, alchemist. Vall has been in prison for a long time. She is the most active interacting with Elthian, the other prisoners and Tris. She’s been getting snippets of news from their captors over the years so she knows a bit about Elthian already. Vall wants freedom, but she also wants help for her husband, Arclum, who is also in prison, and ailling. She works hard to escape (unsuccessfully) with Elthian, and they haven’t broken her spirit.

Lowe: 29, human, warrior/baker. Some of you may remember Lowe. She was Ryvaeryn’s long term partner at the start of FTC, and encouraged Ryn to go to Mantha with the choking line “Don’t come back… Not for me.” Ryn agonised over Lowe and sent her letters before her romance with Elthian intensified. Lowe comes in to help rescue Ryn and friends during their adventure. She and Ryn get closure, and we learn that Lowe has been building a resistance. What for? You’ll have to wait to find out.

Skye, Tertiary: 23, crane shapeshifter, hermit warrior. In FTC, Skye tried making friends as a coping mechanism for past trauma, and it backfired. Since then she’s discovered new ways to vent and face her fears, and it’s rendered her lethal. She’s still the sweet Skye we love, but with a hard exterior, and a healthy centre.

This is high fantasy. There are a lot of characters. These include Pab, Yail, Astra, Arclum, and the bad guys. Tris (top bad guy) and co. will get introductions when I’ve fleshed them out properly.

And so...

In For The King we finally meet the enemy that’s been terrorising our cast for a year, and causing riots and mayhem in Mantha. We receive threats, and we learn what this whole thing is really about.

Buckle your seat belts, kids. This one pulls no punches. It’s gonna be wild.

Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).  —  I’m gonna level with you: I’ve got a bit too much of a soft spot for soft boy Haru, and thus my skills at writing Dark Haru are not the best developed. Also I can be quite slow with replies oop.

What inspired you to rp your muse?  —  Furuba means so much to me. Like a lot of people I found it around age like 14ish and it’s stayed with me ever sense. It’s my favorite book series and I believe the strongest argument for graphic novels/manga having literary merit. It has the best character development I’ve ever read. It’s so cathartic and I related so deeply to many of the characters.

What keeps your inspiration going?  —  A lot of my inspiration comes from watching the anime and rereading the manga, also reading other people’s threads and seeing memes. I go through periods of focusing on my various hyperfixations and I hyperfixate on them...and sometimes that’s Furuba.

If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?  —  My portrayal? Ight whatever. The character itself? I’d like to know why. Like, Haru isn’t one of them, but I know there are problematic characters but that doesn’t mean you can’t like them as a character. Idk I understand hating characters but I’d only love to hear (valid) reasons why. Tangential but I am EXHAUSTED by all the Kagura hate and “discourse.”

Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors?  —  PLEASE DO HOLY SHIT!!! Sometimes I notice them after I see the thread and I want to shove my entire laptop down my throat but if I do I always try to go back and fix them before anyone notices (oops) but if you notice it and I don’t pls tell me.

Do you think you are easy going as a mun?   —  I really try to be as non-intimidating as possible because I’m actually intimidated by everyone else lmao. Like I know my rules may come across a bit cold/blunt but I myself try not to be.

1: If you could pick one fictional character to hang out with, who would it be?

Probably Prompto, actually. c: I’m a bit boring in my routines and all, so having someone as energetic as Prompto as a buddy would be pretty cool. Adventures whenever possible, perhaps!

11: When it comes to shipping, is there a particular dynamic you especially love?

I like ships that have a dynamic where they aren’t really in love at first, or they aren’t together for a long time, and then suddenly there’s some dramatic revelation of event that brings them together in a cute and genuine way. Kinda like a one-sided affection that ultimately leads to the other being all ‘I don’t like affection, but your affection is nice.’ Cute sappy stuff that gives me diabetes, please. :D

Favourite colour and why?

Purple. It’s always been a color associated with regality and power, but it’s also a color that can be associated with moodiness and darkness. Kinda like behind every strength is a weakness. It’s pretty neat~

Do you hate someone that you have a thought about doing something bad to them? if so why?

I resent alot of people in my life, but I don’t really ‘hate’ them. I forsake them alot and say things like ‘I hope you eat a stale bagel,’ but I’d rather let karma take-over for me.

Have any plans? like going on a vacation etc

Have you ever confess to your crush?

I have, yes. Never turns out too well in the end though~

Happiest moment in your life?

I find myself most attracted to a person’s intellect. If they’re smart and have a good and open-minded perspectives on things, then they’re usually someone I grow fond of. That, and roman noses for some reason.

If you have one chance to marry your favourite character. who would it be and why?

I mean... Ravus is my favorite character, but that’s because I like the moody bishies tsunderes. c:

First game you ever play?

The first game I played solo and beat was the Sims Bustin’ Out. Yeah, I was a completionist with that game. It was terrible...

Do you have bad habits that you want to get rid of?

I pull out my hair whenever I have anxiety, so it’d be nice breaking that habit.

Favourite animal? Why?

Owls, because they’re majestic angry birds. Tsundere birds probably.

Be honest, would you rather go back to the past or see your future? why?

Probably the past, so I could benefit my future/present with minor things. Of course, butterfly effect politics, but I’d more rather help shape the present than see the future to come. Only leads to more stress and anxiety.

2. How are you doing in life so far? Struggling? Me too. 

Kind of in a bind for money, and I’ve been lacking in creativity and motivation, but yeah. Beyond that, I guess it’s going okay? Perhaps moving will help shake things up!

3. Do you quote lines from Vine sometimes?

Oh god... A bit more often that I’d wanna admit.

4. If so, which ones? :3

I say ‘watermelone’ alot, because I really like watermelon. I also quote that one vine where they’re singing ‘Suck a dick!’ That one resonates with me alot.

5. What time do you usually go to bed? 

Somewhere between 1 AM and 3 AM.

6. Do you or have you done commissions before?

I do/have done them, yes! I’m a lazy artist though, but I really wanna take more commissions again! I just gotta resolve what’s going on with my desktop. e.e;;

Typically, yes. Stephicness is my default in most cases, like on Xbox, Youtube, and Tumblr. UdonDude/UdonTitan are my PC game names. And gawsh-adaarn-it/gawshadaarnit was my ex-tumblr name and used for Spotify and stuff like that.

8. Who are your top 5 celebrity crushes?

Um... I don’t really have any celebrity crushes, to be honest... I scream alot whenever I see Benedict Cumberbatch though...?

9. How much makeup do you wear when you go out (in general)? 

I actually just started wearing makeup for things, but I only really ever use it when I’m going out to do fancy things. So little to none, because I only ever really use foundation to make myself look like tired.

1. What made you want to start your fandom blog? • Hmmm… It was probably when I finished Heir of Fire because I wanted to writing with somebody and sharing my ideas. I am happy that I did it.

2. How would you describe yourself? • Nooo ,I don’t like this but fine… I can say that I am very stubborn , purpuseful ,I like to be ironic , I don’t get anger quickly bc I’m patient ,aaaand…I like people and knowing them but I really-really believe just some of them.

1) What’s the weirdest nickname people have given you? Probably Satan/Hades cuz they are what they are lol but I didn’t mind; oh and also Care Bear which is just weird altogether 2) How did you get your url? Well all of my social media accounts have this username so I kinda just kept it, the extra n for ‘nikki’ and I love LoZ 3) What’s the weather like outside? Well it’s nighttime rn so it’s really cold and probably still sprinkling since it’s been raining like all day  4) Favorite band? Favorite album of theirs? I have several favorite bands but I’ll just stick with my top 2, Green Day and One Direction. For GD my favorite album has to be the first one of theirs I ever got, which was 21st Century Breakdown in like, 6th or 7th grade from one of my very good friends, I honestly think it’s their best album. For 1D, gosh idk I can’t pick a favorite since Made in the AM is really good but also I have a special connection with both Four and Midnight Memories; I guess I’d pick Midnight Memories cuz a lot of my favorite songs come from that album. 5) How did you meet your best friend? Which one lol I guess I’ll do all of them. So i’ve got three; the one I’ve had the longest is my friend who I met in the 9th grade, we met in JROTC if I’m not mistaken. My middle bestie, Becca, I met her in Spanish class my sophomore year (whoops can’t believe I can’t remember if it was 10th or 11th), we both were really shy and found ourselves only talking to each other because we sat next to each other and refused to move or socialize lmao. My most recent best friend I’ve also known since 10th but we didn’t get super close until we were juniors (hence why I said most recent), we met in a biology classroom cuz we would always hang out there after school waiting out the crowds and we didn’t have a lot of friends so we hung out with that teacher lol. 6) Do you have a calendar on the wall? Of course I liked it, seeing so much area of pure nature that hasn’t been tampered with is breathtaking; especially the Grand Canyon, every distant view looked like a postcard, I couldn’t get over the unrealistic beauty that I saw before me. 9) Is your desk clean or a royal mess? Honestly it’s a huge mess but for me it isn’t a problem cuz I know where things are at, they just aren’t organized very cleanly   10) Do you like wearing hats? Yahh I have a few snapbacks and like a million and one beanies haha 11) Has any of the fandoms you have been in disgusted you? There is this adorable graphic novel called Smile by Raina Telgemier that I love so much cuz it’s about the author’s crazy journey from middle school to high school with dental drama, I like to relate to it since I’ve had braces, rubber bands, and even headgear lol I also can never get over The Fault in Our Stars, it’s one of my favorite books, and my favorite book series is The Wolves of Mercy Falls by Maggie Stiefvater, it has a brilliant concept  17) Any movies you’d recommend? Recently we watched this sorta indie fantasy movie called The Monster Calls and it has an interesting story with some cute animations (it isn’t animated tho).
