Making Jackie’s jacket from Yiffpunk: Rabbit Hunt

(Part 1)

I decided I wanted to make a copy of Jackie’s jacket from my latest book, Yiffpunk: Rabbit Hunt. I realized that I didn’t give much more than the most basic description of her jacket in the actual book despite the plot points it played. There is actually more lore about that jacket than what is ever told in the book... But there just wasn’t any place to work in extra details naturally. This felt like kind of a shame, so I decided to just make an actual copy of it. It would be a nice little bit of Yiffpunk memorabilia I can wear to conventions or something like that...

So first I needed an old denim jacket. Jackie’s jacket was an old denim jacket that had been well used before it ever became hers. I didn’t have anything like that at home because denim jackets just aren’t my style. But there’s a Goodwill in town so I figured I could probably find something there. Unfortunately when I was on my way there I drove right past Goodwill without even thinking about. By the time I realized I had passed my stop I decided, screw it... I’ll just go to Walmart first. I needed to go there after Goodwill to pick up the other things I needed. But as luck would have it, while I was at Walmart I found some pre-faded denim jackets on a clearance rack for $11.00. That’s prefect.

This thing already looks like it’s been worn for years. It’s the perfect base to start with. The next step is going to be smudging it up with some paint. Jackie lived on the streets and that jacket had been around, so I always pictured it as having bits of paint smeared all over it here and there as it it had brushed up against a freshly painted building or park bench more than once, or had been worn by someone (maybe Jackie herself) while tagging the side of a building with a can of spray paint. But I needed to make sure they would be colors that would be commonly used in Rabbitropolis. Especially in the inner city areas where Jackie frequented. With Rabbitropolis having a very vaporwave/synthwave aesthetic, I decided a pastel blue, hot pink, and jet black would be common enough paint colors used in that city. So it was time to start painting the jacket.

I went with a few large, very noticeable smears first and then ran my finger over the brush while it was still wet with paint to spray little flecks all over the jacket. Sadly the smaller flecks aren’t really showing up in the picture.

Once I was finished with the front of the jacket I put a couple of pins I already had on the jacket to see how it would look.

Not a bad start, but I’m going to need a lot more. Jackie’s jacket was described as being covered in assorted patches and pins. I’ll have to buy more of both and cover the jacket in them.

But now that I had proof of concept and I was happy with how it was turning out, it was time to flip it over and paint the back side. I also had some simple denim patches and planned to put one on the back between the shoulders where certain information would be written in with a black marker, but I’ll talk about that when I actually put said information on the jacket. But for now I still needed to at least apply the patch before I started painting. But I couldn’t just have a clean looking patch of denim over top of old worn out looking denim... So I decided to take the pitches into the bathroom and splash a little bleach on them. I tried it with two different colors to see which one I liked the best, but then decided I would just go ahead and put them both on the jacket. One between the shoulders for the info to be written on and the other down towards the bottom as if it was being used to patch a hole from where the jacket had gotten ripped. Then I applied more paint.

When I was done, the back of the jacket looked as seen above.

I was painting on the kitchen floor so it would be easier to clean up the mess from all the little paint flecks I was flinging all over the place and my cats became very curious about what I was doing. At one point Doris apparently decided so wanted to help and stepped in my paint, so I decided to go ahead and let her leave her mark on the jacket.

That bright pink smudge is where she stepped on the jacket after stepping in the paint. It’s a little disappointing that she didn’t make an actual paw print, but the more I look at it the more it does kind of look like a letter D, so I guess that’s just Doris’s signature.

The next step will be putting the info on the between the shoulder patch and then covering the rest of the jacket in other patches and pins as I get them. This is turning into a fun little project for me so I’ll post updates as I do more to the jacket.
