We were doing probability in maths when I was like 7 or 8 and I remember the teacher asking what the probability of the sun rising tomorrow was and I put 99.9%. Everyone else put 100 and she asked why I hadn't.
I was like, how could you say so with absolute certainty? Just because it's always happened before, doesn't mean nothing could happen that would make it so it doesn't. What if there's some aspect of physics we're unaware of and this is when we find out, or some freak thing happens to the planet that nobody saw coming? And come to think of it, how do we know any of the things we know as 'givens' are constant truths?
... And she was like, right: I appreciate the engagement, but because it's such a high percentage as far as everyone's concerned, just round it up - for stuff like that on tests or whatever, just put 100, ok? I remember feeling cool with that and it making sense, but being so pissed off inside knowing that, in maths of all subjects, the 'correct' answer could never be accurate.
