in which wesley fenton is sick and tired of feeling broken, and is willing to destroy himself entirely if it means that maybe, just maybe, it’ll give him more even pieces to try and repair himself from.

twelve years ago.

“i - i don’t ... don’t think i know how to do --- how to do that, daddy,” wesley murmured, tugging nervously at the sleeves of his sweater.

“come on, kiddo, you gotta try! you’ll never know if you never try, right?” danny smiled down at his son, floating in the air a bit and reaching to grab west’s hands. “if i can do it, so can you! then we can go visit amber in the ghost zone more often, huh? come on.”

the small ghost boy tried, he really did. he tried to float just like his dad was, jumping a few times in the air, hoping that might help him to stay in the air. alas, though, his feet always landed back on the floor after no more than a mere second.

“i can’t ...” truthfully, he’d been surprised that he’d managed to transform at all. it was the first time he’d ever done so and, even if it had been on accident, his father had decided that it was the perfect time to try and practice with some of west’s other ghost powers.

danny was quick to drop himself back down on the floor, offering a reassuring smile to his son. “hey, that’s no problem! you’re still young, you don’t gotta know how to fly yet. i mean, what would you use flying for, anyway, right? you’re just a kid.” he ruffled west’s hair.

the five-year-old was quiet, staring down at the floor and frowning. at some point, he ( involuntarily ) turned back into a human, and he sniffled a bit. “can ... can harlow fly y-yet?”

danny hesitated, not wanting to make west feel bad about his inability to fly, but not wanting to lie to him either. “she’s ... learning, yes.”

and west knew what that meant. he knew that it meant yes. harlow did know how to fly. and part of west wanted to ask why. why could she fly when he couldn’t? weren’t they twins? weren’t they equal? instead, he just nodded and walked toward the stairs, aiming to just go to his room and colour for a while.

west sat at the dining table, a book placed in front of him and his mother sitting beside him.

“do you know that word?” sam asked, pointing at one of the words in the book. “can you sound it out?”

the five-year-old ghost boy nodded, leaning in closer to the table to get a better look at the word on the page. “w-wild ... wilder --- wildern-ness?” he managed, looking up at her expectantly.

she nodded, smiling softly and turning the page for him. “yep. wilderness. see? you’re getting better at reading already.” she tapped the next page. “can you read this page all on your own?”

he nodded, resting his chin on the table and crossing his eyes to look at the page. “the ... the bear looked t-to --- the bear looked to the ...” he paused, taking a moment to breathe before continuing. “the bear looked to the bunny a-and he said --- he said that ---” he cut himself off, frowning and looking up at his mother.

“what’s the matter, west?” sam asked, tilting her head slightly to one side in confusion. he’d been doing so well reading, she thought.

“why do --- w-why do i talk like this?” he asked suddenly, moving to push the book away from him.

“why do you talk like what?” she asked, a light frown of her own making its way to her lips.

west sniffled, wiping his nose with his sleeve. “i - i talk funny. i talk funny a-and harlow ... harlow doesn’t.”

sam’s eyes widened and she was quick to close the book, disregarding it entirely as she moved closer to her son. “west, you don’t talk funny. some words give everyone trouble, it’s okay. you’ll get the hang of it, don’t worry.”

‘n-no. no, mama, the kids at --- at school tell me that i - i talk funny.” he stared down at his hands, fumbling with his fingers. “they ... they told me that i sounds like i’m b-broken.” he hiccuped, tears welling in his eyes. he desperately tried to wipe them away, but they just kept falling.

sam was quick to lift him up onto her lap, hugging in tightly. “west, you’re not broken. you’ve never been broken and you never will be, okay?”

“i-i’m more broken than harlow, though, a-aren’t i?” he asked, looking up at her wish tear-filled eyes.

she just hugged him close, rubbing his back gently as he cried and trying, so desperately, to convince him that he wasn’t broken, that he wasn’t anywhere near broken.

present day.

the sound of retching filled the boys’ bathroom and west prayed that no one would walk in. he gagged, coughed, spluttered green goo into toilet, holding onto the edge of it so tight his knuckles were turning white.

he wheezed, trying desperately to catch his breath before he broke out into another coughing fit, before he started throwing up again. but it was only a second before he was back to retching, neon green liquid filling the ceramic bowl.

he blinked tiredly, resting his head against his arm and sniffling. he wiped his hand with his sleeve, glancing at it, only to find that it, too, was now stained with neon green.

west felt like he couldn’t move, felt like if he did he would just collapse onto the floor and be unable to get up at all. in the back of his mind, the last logical part of him thought to call someone --- harlow, felix, even amber. he hadn’t seen any of them in weeks, though, and even he knew that his state of being had worsened tenfold within that time.

his eyes were permanently the neon green that they were supposed to be when he was a ghost --- he couldn’t get them to change back, no matter how hard he tried. there was a white stripe in his hair that he couldn’t get to go away. when he did something so much as walk too fast, he felt like he was about to turn into the green goo that he had been spluttering up for the past few months. he knew how bad he had gotten, and he was almost afraid to see his friends again because of it.

he didn’t want harlow to get even more mad at him, he didn’t want to disappoint felix --- but he also didn’t want to feel like he was broken anymore. he’d felt that way his entire life, and he couldn’t fix his stutter, but --- maybe, just maybe, he could fix his ghost powers. maybe he could make himself even just slightly less broken.

he hiccuped a bit and dug into the front pocket of his backpack, taking out a small bottle ( courtesy of otulissa, of course ) and popping the top off before tilting his head back and downing it.

almost instantly, he felt a wave of nausea wash over him, breathing hard as to try and not start vomiting, to try and keep himself awake --- he felt like he could pass out at any given moment.

he grabbed onto the sides of the toilet and tried to push himself up. he stood on shaky legs, grabbed loosely onto a strap of his backpack, and practically dragged himself out of the bathroom, leaving ectoplasmic footprints behind him.
