diana is the middle child of three. all raised in the world of academia by an art historian and linguist. the pressure to rise to the level of her parents' excellence in their fields was not there as a suggestion, but a requirement. her siblings all fell into her line easily, but diana stumbled behind them, a shadow to her family's legacy. never as clever as her older sister or naturally talented as her younger brother. she had to fight tooth or nail to even be considered on the same playing field.

the thorne family's witchcraft was always meant to be used as a tool to enhance their performance in their fields. diana studied under her mother, growing into her natural ability to sense an object's history through the simplest of touches. still, despite this handy skill, diana rarely impressed her parents with what they saw as a parlor trick.

her studies in both academics and witchcraft were taken incredibly seriously and her mother was not a kind teacher. it didn't help that there was no love lost between siblings; after all the three thorne children were pitted against one another in a competition of who could impress their parents the most.

somehow her upbringing did not sway her away from a career deeply entrenched in the politics of academia. she fostered a passion for history, particularly the ancient world. when she was given the opportunity to get away from home for college, she decided to pursue archaeology. it gave her a way to utilize her psychometry, but more than that, diana felt a deep fulfillment and rightness when she began her college courses. something that she hadn't experienced before whilst being taught by her mother.

there was still competition between her and her peers, but diana was well equipped to handled it. she wanted to fight for a top spot and felt little remorse in using tactics her siblings and her so often used against one another. for the first time, diana felt confident in her abilities. it certainly helped that she was so far away from home without her parents breathing down her neck and saying what she was doing wrong.

it was that freedom that allowed her to start imagining a world beyond her family and their expectations. upon graduation, diana all but completely vanished. her family knew she was still alive at least from the postcards they got as diana traveled the world. she went from excavation to excavation throughout the season, soaking up all the training and knowledge she could. she even went back to school to earn her masters.

somewhere along the way, diana got lost. her subtle use of psychometry out in the field wasn't always that subtle and drew the attention of other supernaturals with less than honorable and academic aspirations. she fell in line with a group she thought consisted of archaeologists, but by the time it was too late, she realized they were treasure hunters, stealing artifacts to sell to the highest bid, no matter the consequences.

six months ago, she found something out in the field that the group was extremely interested in based on what she sensed in the artifact's history. diana had a sudden moment of clarity when she stole away in the dead of the night, artifact in hand. it didn't make the group's leader all too happy and they pursued her. she spent three months on the road before she stepped through a fog and landed in portum — a safe haven for her to lie low.

diana is extremely grateful for this turn of fate, but she typically is not one able to stay in the same place for too long. she's growing restless and paranoid, with the valuable artifact hidden away in her duffel bag. she's considering donating it to the university or local museum, but hasn't worked up the nerve to do it yet.

in general, diana tends to be a workaholic and is more than likely absorbed in one project or another. since she doesn't have anything to really obsess over as far as projects go, i feel like she's losing her mind and is looking for something to busy herself with. she can be sarcastic and aloof, and prefers to keep people at arm's length. but once people get past her walls, she's a huge nerd with a penchant for trouble.

TLDR: diana is a witch who has a natural ability for psychometry, an ability to sense an object's history. she was raised in a competitive, cutthroat family and has basically severed ties with them. after traveling for most of her adult life and working as an archaeologist, she started to work with a group more akin to criminals than scholars and got tangled in black market artifact dealing. six months ago she slipped away from one of their excavations after recovering a valuable artifact in hopes of saving it from an illegal sale. the treasure hunters pursued her until three months ago she ended up in portum. she's a restless person that's uncomfortable staying for this long in town but also fears for her own safety.
