Kind of fascinated with the question of whether Paul was an enabler, but even more fascinated with the question of whether the fandom's caricature of Paul is an enabler
#the gap between the person and the fan-created image is so interesting especially when it comes to mclennon#bc they were emblematic of so many serious issues and seeing how people reframe those to maintain the specialness and tragic romance--#--without being interrupted by the banality of an actual toxic relationship is always so completely fascinating#in this case i think people reframe micromanaging and road-smoothing as anything other than classic enabling behavior#and then exaggerate those qualities in Paul to prove that he was the only person who really looked out for and therefore really loved John#and in that way perfectly reiterate the exact narrative an enabler relies on and prove that we're all basically coming from the same place#I'm not bitching btw people are just having fun and I'm just saying the whole thing is interesting#I don't think it's really about mclennon I think it's about persistent human needs turning into persistent human narratives#and how we all repeatedly fall for the same stories no matter the context#op
