Had the idea that Wario wasn't the first member of the Mario cast Ashley ever met.

Occasionally her parents drag her along to one of their business events instead of just leaving her home alone like usual, and one time when she was seven the particular event she got dragged to was a banquet hosted by Princess Peach. Between being a very small child at a very adult party that she really didn't want to be at, dealing with all these strangers that her parents were showing her off to even though they should know that she doesn't handle meeting new people or having her personal space invaded very well, and the fact that this was the longest she and Red had been apart since she first summoned him a few months ago and she had no idea how he was handling being stuck in that big spooky empty house alone, she was completely overwhelmed, and as soon as her parents' attention was off her she ran off to find somewhere quiet to freak out without making a scene.

Peach suddenly sensed a source of very powerful and somewhat unstable magic in a side hallway just outside the ballroom and went over to investigate, figuring it was a Magikoopa sent by Bowser or something and that she could either deal with them or at least make it so her latest kidnapping didn't involve too much collateral damage.

Instead she finds a little girl with big black-and-white pigtails and even stronger magic than she had at that age who looks about ten seconds away from a full-blown panic attack.

She managed to calm Ashley down by walking her through a power-regulation spell that doubled as a breathing exercise and the two of them just sat there for a few minutes until Ashley felt okay enough to go back in. Peach reunited her with her parents (and noticed a few things about their dynamic that were a bit concerning given the context of where and how she'd found Ashley in the first place, but not substantial enough for her to investigate further without it being seen as an abuse of power) and that was that. Neither of them figured they'd really run into each other again.

Imagine their surprise when a few years later they suddenly have a mutual friend in Wario.

What would my mother think of me? he wondered, and it was the first time such a thought had ever confronted him.

Luke, you really suck at introspection, don’t you? Like... NEVER in TEN YEARS have you EVER wondered about your mother? Sigh.

Shortly after the reorganization of the government, Nanaod Engh had given Luke keys to most of the real treasures of the New Republic—the central data libraries maintained by various branches of the General Ministry. Thanks to Admiral Ackbar’s intervention, Luke also carried the highest-grade security clearance held by any civilian.

Between the two, Luke had—potentially—a great deal of information at his fingertips. But the access he had been granted was a courtesy, not a necessity. Luke’s most urgent curiosities were in areas of little interest to bureaucracies, and he had never found reason to make much use of the favors extended him.

But he found himself with reason now.

Speaking of lack of imagination.... SIGH.

Luke returned to the pilot’s couch and curled up sideways in it. “How do people become part of the circle?”

“Curiosity is not sufficient—which I hazard you know. Some are born to it. Some come to it. Is it any different in your discipline?”

“Born with the gift, do you mean, or born to someone who already belongs, to a trained adept?”

“Is the gift not in the blood?”

“Sometimes it seems that way. Sometimes it seems as if the talent goes wild, almost as if the Force chooses its own,” Luke said, turning on his back and propping one foot on the control panel.

“Why, what do you mean?”

“Look at the way the Jedi are coming back,” said Luke. “The Empire hunted us so relentlessly that most everyone who escaped thought they were the only Jedi left. But it isn’t just that a few solitaries who were hiding have resurfaced. I’ve found students with no family history whatsoever, in species that were never represented before in the Order.”

“Some of your number may have been adventurous travelers,” said Akanah. “On Carratos, I heard many jokes about how the Emperor spent his evenings. If a Jedi sleeps alone, surely it must be by choice, as it is with you.”

LOL, Akanah doesn’t know about Callista. Or Gaeriel. Or anything else about Luke’s messed-up love life.

“Are you saying that you expected me to warm a bed with you?” Luke said. “I didn’t think that was our bargain.”

“No,” she said. “I never expected that.”

“Then what are you saying?”

“That Luke Skywalker could have a hundred children by now. A thousand.”

“That’s crazy.”

“No—that’s the simple truth. There are different rules for heroes and royalty, and you’re seen as a little of both. You can’t be unaware of that.”

Luke frowned and looked away. “I don’t know how to be a father to one child, much less a thousand.”

“You wouldn’t need to know,” she said. “Their mothers wouldn’t expect it. They would be grateful enough for the gift.”

“I’d expect it of me,” he said, and firmly steered the conversation back on course. “We were talking about my being an honorary member of the circle—”

Again, I’m surprised by Luke’s lack of imagination--and offers--given how people at the spaceport viewed him. Did none of them really think, “I would totally bang this dude?” WHY IS HE SO SURPRISED?

Also Luke, just say “fuck,” it’s okay, I promise.

“We were talking about my being an honorary member of the circle—”

“Not honorary,” she corrected. “Novice.”

“Novice, then. But there’s an exception in your oath for people like me?”

“Every adept has the right to judge and the duty to teach,” she said. “I’ve made my judgment.”

“And the rest?” Luke asked. “We’ve had many hours together—why haven’t you started to teach me?”

“But I have,” she said. “I’ve asked you to think about what you know and believe. To go beyond that, the novice must ask for the door to be opened. But you aren’t ready to think of yourself as a student again—not yet. You run too well and easily to go back to crawling.”

#accurate. Luke spends most of this book so convinced he knows everything and yet he can’t figure out why he’s so stuck in a rut.

“No,” Luke said, shaking his head. “To be a Jedi is to be a seeker. A Jedi is always learning. It’s only on the dark side that one becomes obsessed with knowing, and impressed with doing.”

“There’s a touch of the dark side,” Akanah said slowly, “in the way you cling to the privilege of killing, and resist the teaching I’ve offered you. A hint of a mind that has settled on answers and resents being challenged with new questions.”

Luke toyed with the lacing on his longshirt as he considered her words. “You may be right,” he said finally. “I found the Force at a time when what I needed was power. I wanted a weapon to protect my friends, not enlightenment. I was thinking of war against the Empire, not peace with the universe. Perhaps something of that lingers in how I see myself. I’ll think on it.”

“Good,” she said. “Your words give me hope. And hope is the beginning of everything worthwhile.”

I have no idea how the chronology lines up with the other plots and honestly it’s hard to care. This is the most interesting part of the book to me, and I’m STILL reeling at how late in the game this is.

He then took advantage of the open space inside the bay to work his first complete set of Jedi training drills since leaving Coruscant. Working both with and without his lightsaber, he patiently went through the complex exercises which brought him to a profound state of restful clarity.

It was in this state that he felt most keenly the truth and the wisdom of the simple words: There is no emotion; there is peace. There is no ignorance; there is knowledge. There is no passion; there is serenity. There is no death; there is the Force. The peace, the knowledge, and the serenity were gifts that came with his surrender to the Force and with his connection through the Force to all that was.

Sustaining that clarity was always the challenge. In the isolation of a Dagobah, the Jundland Wastes, or a hermitage on a frozen shore, an experienced Jedi could preserve that inner state indefinitely.

But the chaos of the real world was another matter. When ego returned, so did will. The surrender became tainted, the connection flawed. The clarity gradually slipped away under the continuous assault of elementary drives and passions. Even the greatest of the masters needed to perform the practice regularly lest they lose the discipline that made them what they were.

GAH. WHY IS IT ALWAYS DUALITY WITH YOU, KUBE-MCDOWELL? WHAT ABOUT  A MIDDLE WAY BETWEEN THE “TAINTED WORLD” AND “PURITY OF ISOLATION”. What about “entering the market-place with gift-bestowing hands”? And nothing ever stays the same “indefinitely”!!!!!

The drills were as much a test for the body as for the mind, and the docking bay’s newly sanitized shower brought a blissful peace to muscles that were telling Luke they had not been properly exercised in too long. He stood for a long time in the place where the six needle jets converged, letting the water flowing down his body become another meditation.

Yeah, maybe you should have thought of that in your hermitage-quarantine-sulk thing??

I’d forgotten about the bookstore full of Jedi forgeries!!! 

The offerings included Emperor Palpatine’s Principles of Power, a private publication for Imperial Moffs; the Sith book of offerings and rituals; the H’kig book of laws; and the secrets of forming Bilar-type claqa group-minds, among others—with a special discount if Luke took any three or more. Most of the documents were undoubtedly frauds, and none tempted Luke beyond idle curiosity over the skillfulness of the fraud.

And the Jabba’s palace re-creation OH MY GOODNESS:

But making his way to the outgate, Luke turned a corner and was taken aback by the brilliantly lit exterior of a club bar called Jabba’s Throne Room. Performing Nightly—The Original Max Rebo Band, said the scroll. Visit Jabba’s Guest Quarters with a Pleasure Slave. Face the Mighty Rancor in the Pit of Death—

Driven by an outraged curiosity, Luke joined the line and paid the membership charge without haggling. Inside, he descended a curving flight of stairs into a remarkably faithful copy of the throne room in Jabba’s desert palace on Tatooine. Some of the dimensions had been stretched to accommodate more tables in front of the bandstand and around the rancor pit, but the architecture and atmosphere were authentic.

“Why, it’s just like the Palace Museum,” [he] said to the tall and elegantly dressed Twi’lek barring the way at the bottom of the stairs.

“I’m afraid my master Jabba is away on business,” said the Bib Fortuna look-alike, nodding toward the empty dais. “But I’m having a little party in his absence, and I hope you’ll enjoy yourself.” His head-tails stirred in signal, and one of the scantily clad dancing girls hurried to him.

“Yes, Lord Fortuna,” the server said.

“Oola, this is a friend of mine,” said the major-domo. “Treat him well. Find him a seat at my best table.”

The same fiction was carried through everywhere else—an Ortolan keyboardist leading a jizz-wailer trio on the bandstand, the roaring of the rancor underfoot, an annoying Kowakian monkey-lizard skittering around the room stealing food and cackling rudely, even a carbon-frozen Han Solo hanging in the display alcove. But a busy kitchen was concealed down the corridor to the servant’s quarters, and the price card “Oola” left for him included various services available upstairs in the guest quarters and downstairs in Jabba’s dungeon.

It was tasteless and exploitative, but the music was surprisingly agreeable, the roast nerf was tantalizing, and the clientele was markedly more subdued than their counterparts out on the walks. [He] ordered a drink and the executioner’s cut of nerf, refused all other offers with a polite smile, and settled in to discover the truth quotient of The Secrets of the Jedi.

Shortly after his meal arrived, Luke’s consciousness was pricked by hearing a familiar name spoken at a nearby table: Leia’s. He looked up, fearing that the evening’s entertainment at Jabba’s Throne Room would be a dance by a slave-girl-Leia look-alike. But the band was on a break and the transparisteel dance platform over the rancor pit deserted.

I’m honestly surprised this isn’t at Galaxy’s Edge, tbh.

Shortly after, a holographic Jabba made an appearance on the dais above the main floor. That signaled the start of an elaborately scripted show that promised to involve not only “Bib Fortuna” and the dancers, but additional actors and the audience as well.

Luke took that as his cue to leave. His decision was affirmed when, climbing up the curving stairs to the street, he encountered the bounty hunter Boushh coming down them with an unconvincing Chewbacca in tow.

“Aren’t you a little short for a Wookiee?” he muttered under his breath as they passed.

LOL. Anyway, here’s some stuff on archives searches in the GFFA:

From Carratos he requested any information available from newsgrid, political, or police records on Akanah Norand Pell, Andras Pell, and Talsava. He sent the same query to Coruscant’s criminal records office and citizen registry and to the home offices of both the Coruscant Global Newsgrid and the New Republic Prime Newsgrid.

From the New Republic Reference Service, he requested a quickreport on naming conventions on Lucazec and Carratos, thinking he might parse another lead from the names in hand.

A second request to the same source asked for five-hundred-word excerpts from all matches on the key words “Fallanassi” and “White Current.” After a short debate with himself, and despite the pathetic and sensational inaccuracies of Secrets of the Jedi, Luke also contacted an information broker on Atzerri and paid a hundred credits for a search on the same keys.

He also requested a Current Terms & Conditions brochure from the chief librarian’s office on Obroa-skai. The library computers there were the only resource offering both a greater variety and a greater volume of records than those held by Coruscant.

But Obroa-skai’s generosity with its planetary treasure was limited. To protect against theft of the library, and to provide the resources needed to maintain it, accessing the records meant either going to Obroa-skai or hiring one of the library’s own trained contract researchers.

In either case, Obroa-skai was not a resource one turned to for quick answers. The official language of New Republic recordkeeping was Basic, and everything held by Coruscant was kept in one of several readily searchable data specifications. But the Obroa-skai library was a collection of primary documents, in ten thousand storage formats and uncountable languages. The most complete general index covered only fifteen percent of the library’s holdings, and all the specialty indexes combined added only a few percent to that.

Those were the principal reasons why the brochure—which Luke received within minutes of requesting it, as the first response to any of his inquiries—reported that a normal single-part library search was averaging eight days. The waiting list for terminal time was holding at fifteen days, and the backlog for contract researchers had climbed to seventy.

Also, in regards to your setting, what would be the (abridged) history of Mobius in your vision of things? If you feel like explaining it, I mean.

I can give it a go, but keep in mind that I am constantly revising my ideas, and I tend to vacillate between what I want to keep in and what I don’t. I’m a ditherer, it’s true ID;

I really do need to make a master document of this crap though, even if the most detailed bits and pieces come from specific time periods in Mobius’ recent history. Either way, this is perpetually in Rough Draft mode, so what you see here might not be the same the next time you ask.

Anyway, let’s roll-

The Beginning

-To begin with, Mobius is a unique world in that it undergoes something we’ll call “The Gaia Cycle”, in which life develops on the planet, advances greatly before leaving/self destructing, leading Dark Gaia to emerge in order to wipe the slate clean, which in turn allows Light Gaia to renew the world and re-start life on the planet, so that the cycle begins again. As such, Mobius is indescribably ancient, having gone through the cycle several times over. The only constant is the Master Emerald and the Seven Chaos Emeralds.

-During this cycle, several individuals from the Old World are able to essentially acend to Godhood via the power of the Chaos Emeralds and mastering their energies, and so are able to escape the end of their world as the Gaia Cycle proceeds. As you can guess, these guys are basically to serve as stand-ins for the Ancient Walkers.

-For now we’ll call them the Titans. The Titans take charge of the various primal fundaments of the plane. They also take it upon themselves to oversee and help guide the development of life on the on the Soon To Be Mobius, overseeing the re-birth of the Dinosaurs before guiding the direction of evolution to lead to the creation of intelligent life far ahead of the usual schedule. Their plan is to oversee the development of a utopian society so that when the time comes for the Gaia Cycle to begin anew, more benevolent life will be left and spread from Mobius, all in the hopes of creating a universe of harmony unlike the ones they had survived.

-Naturally, one of them has other plans and believes that they should RULE over creation rather than guiding and guarding it. The most powerful of their number attempts to convince the others of her viewpoint. When that fails she tries to seize control of creation by force, killing several other Titans before she is defeated. Suffering an unhealing wound that saps her of her cosmic power, The Fallen Titan is banished by the others and sealed beneath a mountain for her crimes.

-The surviving Titans though are not unscathed either, their injuries leaving them unable to directly intervene on Mobius as they once did while regulating the energies that comprise their world. Rather than letting the primal forces run unchecked, they fall into the role of distant, observant Gods, only intervening when able and moving in subtle and mysterious ways.

Early Mobius

-Life on Mobius proceeds onward as intended- the myriad new forms of intelligent life on Mobius develop sentience, tools and the like. Life takes on many strange and wondrous forms on Mobius, from your standard humans and Mobians to more fantastical creatures like dragons. Primitive magic is developed by these early prehistoric societies, and through them understanding of the various Higher Powers begins to emerge. In particular, worship of Light Gaia/Dark Gaia becomes widespread. At this stage of things, the various peoples of Mobius stick to their own kind.

Then, one day, something happens- The Fallen Titan escapes from her confinement.

Though greatly weakened and lacking most of her power, The Fallen Titan still retains certain advantages- namely immortality, and the power to manipulate the forces of Chaos. Cast in the shape of a great serpent, the Fallen Titan regains her ‘footing’ and develops a unique power- that of being able to awaken Chaos Powers within others or nullifying similar powers.

The Fallen Titan, through her powers, quickly establishes a cult around herself, and through her powers amasses a great army. She comes to be known by the name of Vokara, and through her army conquers many tribes. Through her a great and terrible city is built, and she establishes the first civilization on Mobius. This comes to be known as the First Great Civilization.

(In case it isn’t obvious, Vokara is pretty much meant to fill-in for Mammoth Mogul. She started out as an attempt to differentiate Lyric, but the sheer differences eventually led me to just go ‘screw it’ and make an OC)

Standing as Goddess-Queen of the First Great Empire, Vokara researches means of bringing the Chaos Emeralds to her, knowing that they are the key to regaining her original might. Eventually the Master Emerald is located and brought to her, and by communing with it she re-discovers the knowledge of how to access the Special Zone. She houses the Master Emerald in a great temple, and through its power mutates a Chao to become its very first Guardian- Chaos.

As you can imagine, it eventually all goes to shit. On the eve of receiving the Seventh Emerald and re-attaining her lost Godhood, a hero arises to challenge Vokara and lead the oppressed peoples of Mobius in a great rebellion against her. This hero becomes the first ‘Super’ on Mobius, and the cataclysmic final battle levels her great city and sends her Chaos Temple crumbling. The Chaos Emeralds themselves do not return to the Special Zone, and are instead spread across Mobius to become objects of

Though the First City is destroyed, the Vokarik Empire’s influence lives on in its former vassal states, many of whom build off the various advances that occurred under the Vokarik regime to advance themselves forward. Trade and exploration begin to flourish. Vokara meanwhile retreats to the shadows, deciding to take advantage of her long life and try for a more long term, subtle approach to regaining her lost Godhood. Across the centuries she begins to form cults, secret societies and conspiracies to serve her ends, taking on multiple names and identities as she does so.

The longest lasting and most enduring of these is The Order of the Black Emerald.

-After this point things get a bit hazy. Two more Great Civilizations come and go, and eventually the Master Emerald winds up in the hands of the Echidna, along with the Seven Chaos Emeralds.

-The Echidna manage to become the keepers of the Master Emerald, which takes up a great place of importance within their mythology. The Echidna develop into multiple clans, but the two most important are the Nakbe Clan, a society of warriors, and the Nocturnus Clan, who focus on science. The Nakbe Clan are the keepers of the Master Emerald and eventually the Chaos Emeralds, which they keep enshrined. Chaos, the First Guardian, is placated by the company of Chao. The Nakbe Clan eschews advanced science in favor of physical might, and learns to channel the power of the Emeralds to make their warriors all the stronger.

-The Nocturnus, focusing on science, developes rapidly and becomes a highly influential and widespread nation in of themselves. They will be known as The Fourth Great Civilization. While initially things are peaceful between the Nocturnus and the Nakbe clans, gradually the Nakbe Clan sets down a path of conquest and imperialism. In response the Nocturnus develop the Gizoids and march down a path of counter-conquest under the leadership of Pir’oth Ix. The two forces battle viciously, but in the end even the Chaos Enhanced warriors of the Nakbe clan prove to be no match for the Nocturnus, and are pushed to the brink of defeat. Then, mysteriously, the capital city of the Nocturnus simply vanishes, drawn away by a mysterious creature known as Argus (that may or may not have been drawn to Mobius by the efforts of the Order of the Black Emerald).

-The victory of the Nakbe clan is short lived. Pushed to the brink by their losses and left vulnerable, the peoples they pillaged in the past gather and begin to seek vengeance against their oppressors. In desperation, Pachachamac raids the Emerald Shrine in the hopes of turning the full might of the Chaos Emeralds against the attackers…. In doing so enraging the guardian Chaos, causing it to absorb the emeralds and subsequently going on a rampage that devastates the Echidna civilizations and many societies around the globe. Only through the sacrifice of Tikal is Chaos sealed away, but not before Mobius essentially undergoes an Apocalypse that sets it back thousands of years.

-In the aftermath of the devastation, the remnants of the Echidna band together. Realizing the dangers of the Master Emerald, one group of Echidna opts to take the Master Emerald to ensure that something like Chaos never happens again, while the other group decides to have nothing to do with the emeralds at all and migrates elsewhere to rebuild. Eventually, in the name of keeping the Master Emerald out of the wrong hands, the keepers of the ME use its power to create a floating island in the sky, which will come to be known as Angel Island.

What becomes of the ground bound remnant is unknown, and eventually the world will believe the Echidna people to be extinct.

-Past Mobius

-In the aftermath of the Deluge, Mobius is set back pretty far as most cities are devastated, and records of the past are hazy. Civilization tries to rebuild as best it can, but it’s on a decidedly uneven tilt. Consequently this is why you have ruins and weird ancient supertech hidden everywhere. It is during this time that the art of sorcery begins to develop and flourish. Mighty sorcerer-kings (and queens) arise from the ashes of technological civilization and establish dominance over the world. This is the Age of Sorcery, and it’s not really a fun time to exist.

-The Sorcerer-Kings rule and wage war against one another for many centuries, and actively suppress technology to keep their subjects in line. Despite this, pockets of civilization are able to resist this- chiefly the human city-state of Soleanna, which maintains scientific advancement even against the scrutiny the Sorcerer Kings of Mobius. The Soleannans spread the word of Solaris to the other peoples of Mobius, and in secret spread their technological knowledge as well. Eventually the Solaric Crusades are started, a mass uprising against the Sorcerer Kings and their magic. In the course of the crusade the Sorcerer Kings are defeated, but over the course of defeating the dark magics used by the Sorcerer Kings, many of Mobius’ more benign magical traditions are also exterminated as part of the Holy War as it turns into a crusade of magic itself.

When it is over, the Solar Empire is established across Mobius, with Soleanna as its capital.

-One consequence of the Solaric Crusades is that many of Mobius’ naturally mystical species (fantasy critters) are driven to flee from Mobius itself, using magic to cross dimensional barriers into the ‘Nameless Zone’ where they may live freely. Only a few choose to remain behind on Mobius, among them the mighty Dragons.

One of the Sorcerer Kings, Lazaar, builds a mighty fortress in a remote and desolate land, seeking to regain and rebuild his power and re-take the world. His dark magical experiments, left unchecked, pollute and corrupt the land around, creating what will one day be known as The Forbidden Zone. Lazaar uses his magic to create a homunculus to serve as his assistant, only for the homunculus to teach itself magic and betray Lazaar, trapping him within his own fortress and siphoning his powers for its own ends.

The Homunculus dubs itself ‘Naugus’, and continues where his master left off, eager to explore the possibilities of magic and its limits, while vowing to never be subject to the will of anyone ever again.

- Meanwhile on Angel Island….

After the devastation the Deluge and the raising of Angel Island, the Echidna remnants were able to advance in peace and isolation from Mobius. Slowly they regained much of their original technological prowess, and through their technology managed to keep any would-be explorers at bay. The Hidden Palace is created, within it the great Emerald Chamber to house the Master Emerald.

-The science of Chaos Physics, the study of Chaos Emeralds, emerges as a scientific discipline. Two scientists, Sayil and Xultun become leaders in their fields, seeking to better know the power of the Chaos Emeralds in the hopes of benefiting all Echidna kind. One of their projects is figuring out how to transfer Chaos Energy directly into a Mobian (in a kind of predecessor to the eventual experiments carried out by Gerald Robotnik). Something however goes horribly wrong, and there is an accident- one that results in Xultun being physically and mentally transformed by the experience.

-Now bitterly misanthropic and nihilistic, Xultun demonstrates the ability to control a strange, corrupted form of Chaos Energy. He eventually escapes confinement and becomes a terrorist against the Echidna nation, with his goal being nothing short of the elimination of all life on Mobius so that it might be ‘purified’. As the death toll mounts, Sayil sets out to take down her former friend and colleague. Uncovering ancient scrolls of the Nakbe Clan’s teachings, she learns a natural means of drawing power from the Master Emerald. From there she sets out to thwart Xultun, time and time again, eventually seeming to kill him. Much of the Angel Island civilization is devastated as a result, even if the rest of Mobius is saved.

-Realizing the dangers of the Master Emerald and its powers, Sayil in the aftermath takes it upon herself to become it’s protector, and as such she becomes the first Guardian of the Master Emerald. While the Echidna rebuild, Sayil uses her powers to locate the other Chaos Emeralds on Mobius, travelling the globe and gathering them so they will not fall into the wrong hands. During this time she clashes with both Vokara and Naugus, thwarting them both as they seek out the emeralds for their own ends. When finished, she returns to Angel Islands and promptly sends the Chaos Emeralds back into the Special Zone, hopefully out of reach of would-be tyrants.

-Sayil establishes the tradition of the Guardian by taking on an apprentice and successor of her choosing, teaching them her skills and literally transferring the power from herself to her student. Thus it follows that each new Guardian is chosen by the last, protector of the Master Emerald and the Echidna people.

-Xultun, wounded but not dead, retreats to a hidden laboratory base deep under the surface of Mobius. There he places himself in a recovery pod to undergo suspended animation while his injuries are healed. Due to an earthquake, the timing mechanism of his pod is damaged, and he remains in stasis for far longer than intended, dreaming dreams of dark destruction.

(In case it isn’t obvious, Xultun is basically an expy for Finitevus- all the pertinent details of him came from Flynn, and so I feel free to plunder them for my own use).

-As is the pattern of things, the Solar Empire reigns strong for many centuries before falling into excess, decadence and stagnation. The Solar Empire, once the heroes of the Age of Magic, gradually slide into tyranny and corruption, eventually becoming the sick man of Mobius as it desperately clings to power. During these declining years, the Solar Empire begins to resort to slave raids in order to replenish its laborers.

-It is at this stage of things that a new player enters the stage of history- Aneiron. Born to the Acorn clan of squirrels in one of the less developed forest regions of Mobius, Aneiron grew up in a time of constant inter-clan conflict between neighbors. Aneiron left home at a young age to become a wanderer, adventurer and mercenary, travelling far and wide across the known world and exposing himself to many different cultures and people. Learning the strengths of other nations, Aneiron became determined to give his own people that strength, as well as realizing the folly of constant warfare between species.

-Returning to his homeland and bringing with him new ideas, Aneiron became leader of his clan and bringing about radical changes. The most radical was the idea of co-operation between the races. Through careful diplomacy (and force of arms, when needed), Aneiron forged alliances with those who had traditionally been his people’s enemies. Under his guidance, the squirrels and their allies built the city of fortress of Mobotropolis- which meant “City For All Of Mobius”, a meeting ground for clan readers and place where different species could co-habit and trade freely, as well as a refuge for travelers.

-Though initially Aneiron’s Alliance is comprised of herbivores, to his shock, carnivores begin to come into the fold as well. This leads to some conflict, both from within and without, but in time ALL the clans of the realm are allied with one another. At this time, the Solar Empire begins to seek new lands to plunder- and the lands of Aneiron fall into their crosshairs. Raiding parties are sent, and colonies are built. Aneiron and his alliance converge, and Aneiron is voted to become Warlord of the Alliance. Under his military leadership, the Solar Empire’s army is driven back, and the colonies claimed for the Alliance- the people already living there are permitted to stay, under the condition of accepting vassalhood from the Acorn clan.

-This move reverberates around the Solar Empire, leading to uprisings that weaken it further, until the empire collapses completely (with generous help from Vokara and the Order of the Black Emerald). Several of the Solar Empire’s more distant city-states manage to avoid the worst of it and band together for mutual protection. This coalition of city states will eventually unify into a single polity, which will one day come to be known as The United Federation.

-Soleanna itself, despite the loss of its wider empire, manages to escape the collapse of the Solar Empire. Owing to its status as the Holy City of the Solaris faith, it is able to retain independence even as the Solar Empire itself breaks apart. It will survive, eventually becoming the Duchy of Soleanna in modern times.

-Generations pass. Clans develop into feudally based kingdoms. Aneiron’s great grandson breaks with all tradition and takes a chipmunk for a bride, permanently allying the two kingdoms to one another. Mobotropolis is expanded upon. A new and more terrible war brews, this time with the rival Kingdom of Duskmount. A mountainous kingdom of meager resources, the various peoples of Duskmount also banded together- not in mutual partnership, but in a stratified, caste-based civilization where breed determines position, with Deers forming the ruling caste. Seeking new resources and viewing the Alliance of the Acorn family as an affront to the Duskmount way of life, King Mordent Duskmount launches a war of conquest against the Alliance. The war lasts many years, but Duskmount is eventually beaten back, starting a bitter rivalry between the two realms.

-In the aftermath of the Duskmount War, the leadership of the Alliance begins to grow closer. The descendants of Aneiron begin to consolidate power by intermarrying fellow ruling families. Eventually, the Acorn family becomes the controlling family of the realm. War breaks out. Those that do not join willingly are soon forcibly brought to heel. The Alliance of the Forest Realm gives way to the official founding of the Kingdom of Acorn, with Mobotropolis as its capital. For the purposes of historic narrative, Aneiron is none the less credited as the founder and first ‘King’ of Acorn, even though in his lifetime he was only ever King of the Squirrels.

-The Kingdom of Acorn becomes a feudal monarchy, one where species is irrelevant but class is everything. It spreads forth, and eventually becomes one of the greatest empires in history.

-Present Mobius

-In the 800 years since its founding, the Kingdom of Acorn expands to become a great and mighty empire, though it never goes by that name. It influences the culture, economy and technology across all of Mobius, and helps to usher in what is known as ‘The Mobian Age’- an age where the various nation states of Mobius begin to discard species based division in favor of simply calling themselves ���Mobian’. Whatever the crimes and cruelties of the Kingdom of Acorn, it at least done THAT much good. Though some nations continue to define themselves by species first, by the modern era the term ‘Mobian’ is almost default all across the globe.

-During its time the Kingdom of Acorn knows the highs and lows that come with every Empire- periods of prosperity, periods of hardship, civil war and renaissance, but throughout it all manages to hold onto power. By contrast, it’s longterm rival the Kingdom of Duskmount tries and fails continually to outdo Acorn, until eventually its own holdings are drawn back, the kingdom left a pale shadow of its former self by the modern era.

-The United Federation itself continues to soar and to grow, becoming one of if not THE dominant military and economic powers on the planet. It undergoes a period of great rapid technological advancement thanks to the brilliance of one Professor Gerald Robotnik, who is soon tasked with the single greatest feat of engineering- the space colony ARK, a symbol of scientific progress and of the future.

-Gerald Robotnik completes the Space Colony Ark, and is hit with tragic news- his young granddaughter Maria has been diagnosed with NIDS, which will one day kill her. Refusing to allow this, Gerald arranges to have Maria live with him upon the Ark, and he dedicates a portion of the colony’s research to curing her. To placate his backers within GUN’S military-industrial complex, he proposes the Eclipse Canon, and disguises his research for Maria as being done for the creation of an Ultimate Lifeform. This leads to project Shadow, and the creation of Shadow the Hedgehog, who quickly bonds with Maria.

-Unbeknownst to Gerald, GUN is not entirely in control of the situation- a portion of it has been subverted by agents of the Black Emerald, the true backers of the ARK project. Under investigation and in danger of being revealed, Vokara decides to cut her losses when it comes to the ARK- her agents send false information to GUN’s High Command, framing Gerald Robotnik for treasonous actions, while making sure that the ‘right’ officers would be sent to deal with the false problem. Gerald is recalled to the United Federation, and while he is being interrogated the raid is launched. Many people are killed as a result of the sloppily executed operation, including Maria Robotnik, and Shadow is jettisoned out of an escape pod, though he is swiftly reclaimed by GUN.

-The media report of the incident gives falsified information painting Gerald Robotnik as a dangerously unhinged mad scientist conducting unethical experiments on the ARK, leading to the raid, and the deaths that occur are pinned on him directly. Gerald, a broken man by this point, is taken to a GUN Black Site located under Prison Island, told to finish his work on Shadow or that he will die next. Gerald bleakly agrees, continuing to perfect his creation while tampering with Shadow’s mind in a long term plan for revenge. When it becomes clear that Gerald is not co-operating, he is executed. Shadow is placed in cold storage, for later potential use by the Black Emerald.

-The Robotnik family, disgraced by the ‘crimes’ of their patriarch, is forced to flee the United Federation for the Kingdom of Acorn. They take new names in their new home, becoming the ‘Kintobors’, while their eldest son Ivo is given the name of ‘Julian Kintobor’.

-The Kingdom of Acorn is in rotten state at this time. Under the reign of the belligerent and arrogant King Maximus Acorn, social progress grinds to a halt and even regresses in areas while his attempts to make the kingdom ‘strong’ simply bring misery and warfare. The long simmering resentment of the Kingdom’s colonies erupts into open separatist warfare, with Maximus refusing to seek any kind of compromise and instead feeding more and more of the Kingdom’s soldiers into the killing fields rather than show ‘weakness to the lesser’.

((Yeeah, Maximus is my commentary on good ol Maximilian. Before you ask, I envisioned him as a combination of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and Tzar Nicolas II of Russia. Any resemblance to certain living political figures is entirely and unwantedly coincidental.))

-In fact, after the failure of the ARK, all of Mobius goes through some hard times as the established Old Powers of the planet are seen as slipping, failing and not doing enough to provide for its respective peoples. This leads to the rise of many new nations built upon new forms of government it, leading to the term ‘Neo Nation’ being bandied about. Though at first specifically referring to post Ark nations, it comes to mean ‘Any Country Less Than Two Centuries Old’, and as such includes old-but-still-young countries such as the Empire of New Babylon.

-Duskmount by this time has been in sharp decline for centuries, only to see its fortunes reversed under the direction of its newly crowned king, Vortigern. Under Vortigern’s direction the Kingdom is able to rescue itself from the brink, re-igniting and rejuvenating itself into a major nation after centuries of humiliation at the hands of the Acorn Kingdom. In time, it begins to exert itself militarily as well, re-absorbing old territories and gaining new ones in the process.

-Julian Kintobor grows up in the Kingdom of Acorn. Despised at home by his family due to inheriting his grandfather’s genius intellect and ostracized by his peers for the same, Julian quickly grows up to become mistrustful, bitter and misanthropic. At age 18 he is drafted to fight in the Colony Wars, made possible due to his father’s connections (the Kintobors slowly regaining their old wealth and prestige in their new homes). During his time in the army he meets and befriends fellow genius Charles Hedgehog, the first friend he has ever had. Their year of duty ensures they both see and endure many terrible things before the war finally concludes and they are sent home. The two work together to join the prestigious Royal Science Acadamy, and are both able to attain scholarships. They soar through college, becoming some of the youngest graduates in history, and soon go work for the Science Ministry.

-Vortigern Duskmount completes his re-conquest, and re-christens the Kingdom of Duskmount as the EMPIRE of Duskmount, with himself as first emperor. He enters into alliance with other Neo Nations, and through them proposes a means for all of them to gain more power and influence than ever before- by conquering the Old Powers and dividing up the resources between the Neo Nations. From this, the Neo Nation Alliance is formally announced.

-Years later, Vortigern succeeds in duping King Maximus into launching an attack on Duskmount territory, effectively making the Kingdom of Acorn the aggressor in what will come to be known as the Great War. Rallying his nation, Vortigern launches an attack on the Kingdom of Acorn and thus begins the Great War, while the other Neo Nations pursue their own targets. Maximus dies early on in a doomed, futile effort to personally lead his forces into battle. Within two years, the Kingdom of Acorn is forced to surrender before the military might of Duskmount. The Kingdom of Acorn is thus occupied and absorbed into Duskmount.

-Charles and Julian go underground to avoid the Dusmount Occupation force. They put their minds to building weapons and vehicles in secret, and begin to engage in a two man war against the Duskmount soldiers. Meanwhile, Vortigern orders the destruction of the entire Acorn bloodline so that no legitimate challengers to its throne may ever emerge. Only Maximus’ youngest son, Prince Galen Acorn, is able to escape this fate.

-Two organized resistance movements form in the Occupied Kingdom. Charles and Julian’s efforts draw others to their cause until they are a true resistance movement, and Julian retires from field work to become a full time strategist and leader. Galen meanwhile joins with a resistance movement comprised of the remnants of the Royal Army as well as civilian partisans, led by the surviving Warlord of the Realm. In time the two movements meet and merge to form the Acorn Resistance Army, under Julian’s leadership. During this time, the setbacks the occupation faces causes Vortigern to resort to more and more extreme measures, leading to greater and greater atrocities.

-With the Acorn Resistance Army in open rebellion and receiving aide from the militaries of the other Old Powers (including the United Federation), factories and foundries are captured by the resistance. Julian uses these to put his grand strategy in motion, building a great army of robots to fight against the forces of Duskmount. Soon a great army of Peacebots is marching upon Mobotropolis itself, though for reasons of politics it is Galen who is seen leading and liberating the city rather than Julian (not that Galen WANTED this). While Julian oversees a crucial battle elsewhere, Galen is able to confront and kill Vortigern in armed combat. With that, the Occupation is over.

-With the Kingdom Liberated, Julian swiftly gains control of the remaining major factories. His weapons and robots are created en-masse, and soon all the Neo Nation Alliance is under siege from seemingly endless Peacebot armies. Engaging them in a war of attrition they cannot win, the Neo Nation Alliance surrenders to the Old Powers. The Great War is won, and the world rebuilds after years of global bloodshed and destruction.

-Years pass, and peace is brief. Galen Acorn sets to become a reformer for the people, making moves to weaken the grip of the nobility and do away with the stratification of the Kingdom. The Aristocracy, resenting these attempts to limit their power and prestige and the shaking up of the social order, make things difficult for their king even as he attempts to shift the monarchy towards a more democratic form of government. Likewise, the widespread use of robots to rebuild the Kingdom leads to fears of job loss as paranoia about technology reaches a fever pitch, with riots and protests following. Anti-Colonial terrorism breaks out as well (aided in part by the Black Emerald as part of a plan to de-stabilize the Kingdom).

-Julian, despite his efforts, is stuck in place commanding the robot labor force of the Kingdom, watching as Charles becomes Science Minister and Galen is lauded as a War Hero even as the Kingdom teeters closer and closer to civil anarchy. A means of advancement is given to him with the offer of becoming the realm’s new Warlord. He is eventually caught in a terrorist bombing that claims the lives his wife and daughter, while he himself is on death’s door. To save his life, Charles Hedgehog unearths the Roboticizer, a medical device the two had worked on before the war broke out. Julian is fed through the Roboticizer and becomes a cyborg, saving his life. He accepts the position of warlord, and after months of physical therapy becomes the kingdom’s new Warlord.

-For the next several years Julian works to set a plan in motion- the conquest of Mobius. He ruthlessly deals with the terrorists threatening the Kingdom and puts an end to the protests, expanding the robot army while conspiring with the Battlebirds in secret. He takes on his nephew Snively as an assistant, and as part of his plan the Battlebird Armada emerges to raid distant shipping lanes. To deal with the threat and abate the fears of robots replacing the army wholesale, the remaining organic portion of the royal fleet is sent to deal with the problem.

-While they are away, Julian launches his coup- the robot armies he built to protect the kingdom now become its attackers, striking all across the globe in a sudden, frenzied march of conquest. The Kingdom of Acorn falls within days, and King Acorn himself vanishes without a trace, while his daughter Sally escapes with her friends to the hidden village of Knothole. With new territories secured, Julian spends the next several years overseeing the conquest of Mobius. One by one the armies of Mobius are destroyed before the mechanical onslaught. So is born the Robotnik Empire, and Mobotropolis becomes Robotropolis as millions and millions of its citizens are captured and transformed into Robian slaves.

-Charles and other veterans of the Great War start a domestic guerilla movement against Robotnik, liberating Mobians and striking at factories and other crucial facilities, becoming an irritant to the tyrant. Eventually getting into contact with the remnant of the Royal Fleet sent to deal with the battlebirds, a plan is hatched to re-take Robotropolis. Unfortunately, Robotnik anticipates the attack, destroying the fleet, killing the nascent resistance force, and finally roboticizing Charles in a twisted act of mercy.

-With his only major impediment defeated, Robotnik turns his attention back to Mobius. Nation after nation falls before Robotnik over the years, the inhabitants enslaved and Roboticized, and everywhere in the Robotnik Empire the environment is desecrated as factories dedicated to building more and more machines cover all the land. Even the United Federation falls before Robotnik, reduced to several cities fiercely and implacably defended by GUN, who resort to suppressed technologies and making robots of their own to fight the machine hordes.

-Things go swimmingly for Robotnik, and his victory is all but assured. Then one day, facilities in South Island begin to report unexpected delays in the development of the Scrap Brain Zone, an experimental automated super factor and roboticization facility, due to ‘outside interference’. Realizing that the nephew of Sir Charles, Sonic, is the culprit, Robotnik heads to South Island to personally oversee the destruction of the sneaky pest.

-And thus, do things begin.

Anyway, that’s the gist of things as they currently stand. As I said, I’m constantly changing and thinking and altering things, debating on what to include and what not to include, but this more or less is how things went down I the personal setting. The Abridged version anyway. Hope you enjoy it!

I Can't Stop Watching Contagion | Folding Ideas

Coping with crisis in the real world by confronting it in fiction

[O]ne purpose of fiction is that it allows us a space to practice intense emotions and states without exposing us to the complexities or harms of those states in reality. ... Watching a disaster film in a disaster, particularly one as sociologically driven as Contagion, is an extension of this. Rather than practicing intense emotional states before they happen, this instinct of exposing ourselves to what we’re already experiencing, amplifying existing emotional states, it works as a form of emotional inoculation. I am scared and anxious and uncertain, and so I will make myself more scared and more anxious and more uncertain, because it’s still fiction, it’s still safe, it still has an end. It is bounded. Things will get bad, things will then get worse, people will die. The world is unfair, it is unbalanced, it is unjust, and catastrophe will bring out both the best and worst of all of us. And then it will end.

There is an escapism to a story about horrible things, because that story is complete. It is bounded. It provides a framework to horror that doesn’t exist in the real present. Our future is uncertain, beset on all sides by devils, and we can come out better or we can come out worse or we can die and none of us knows which it will be and we’re all screaming at those in power to make the moral choice, to choose better.

On one hand I am deeply privileged to be in a position where I am and can remain isolated. On the other hand I can’t even think about the other hand.

Disease does not have a narrative meaning, it does not have an eye for poetry or twists or closure. The only meaning is in how we respond. So I watch Contagion over and over and over again. Because I need to practice emotions, and I need to live in a bounded world, and I need to believe we can choose better.

VOICEOVER: This video is not an essay, it is a raw nerve.

Contagion is a 2011 film directed by Steven Soderbergh, starring an ensemble cast including Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kate Winslet. The film revolves around the origin, contraction, spread, and cure of the fictional MEV-1 virus, a highly contagious, aggressive, and fatal strain of hybrid bat and pig flu.

The initial patient, Beth Emhoff, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, contracts the virus in Macau after shaking hands with a casino chef who has recently handled an infected pig. She spreads the virus to several other people in the casino after they handle objects that she’s touched, such as gambling chips, a martini glass, and her cell phone. An important aspect of the film is that the fictional virus is highly transmissible via fomites, which are objects that an infected person has touched after touching their mouth or nose, coughing or sneezing on the object, or otherwise leaving infectious residue on an otherwise inert, non-biological object. A local waiter who handled her glass returns home, infecting members of his family before wandering into traffic in a fever-induced delirium where he is struck by a vehicle and killed. A Japanese businessman who shared chips with her returns to Tokyo where he falls ill rapidly, dying suddenly of a seizure on a crowded bus, infecting several bystanders who touch him or handrails that he touched. A Ukranian model who handled Beth’s phone flies to London where her symptoms also escalate rapidly while she transmits the disease to others via handling portfolios and riding in a cab.

Beth returns to America where she infects several people in Chicago, first her ex lover Jon who contracts it when they have sex while she is on layover, and a bartender at the airport who handles her credit card, before flying to Minneapolis where she infects the coworker who drives her home from the airport and her son Clark. A day or two later Beth’s husband, Mitch, played by Matt Damon, picks up Clark from school after Clark begins to exhibit a fever. While Beth and Mitch are talking in the kitchen Beth suddenly has a seizure. Mitch rushes her to the hospital, leaving Clark with a babysitter, but Beth’s condition continues to worsen, she fails to respond to treatment, and she dies. As a stunned Mitch is driving home he gets a call from the babysitter that Clark has possibly had a seizure and might not be breathing. Mitch tells her to call 911 immediately, but before anyone can get there Clark is already dead.

From there the story expands to encompass the doctors, politicians, reporters, hucksters, and ordinary people who are swept up in an all-encompassing pandemic that threatens to kill a quarter of the global population. The movie is an incredibly tense hundred minutes of society pushed to its breaking points, not as a fantastical disintegration into wastelands of leather-clad murder gangs or a zombie apocalypse, but one rooted in the historical reality of epidemics.

And I can’t stop watching it.

I have watched Contagion over fifteen times in the last two weeks. Several days I’ve just watched it on repeat two or three times. And I'm not alone. According to Netflix it is, at the time of writing, the second most watched thing in Canada. For weeks it has sat in the top ten.

Unlike many similar films, such as the 1995 film Outbreak starring Dustin Hoffman, the film is not about any one person, and there is no singular twist of victory. Rather it is an example of sociological storytelling. It’s about the systems and networks that these characters exist within, and how they both influence and are influenced by those systems, and what happens when those systems are placed under tremendous strain. Kate Winslet plays Dr. Erin Mears, a front line worker for the CDC who is sent to Wisconsin to track the transmission of the virus and contain its spread. Half way through the film she catches the virus herself, and then her condition worsens, and then she dies. It is unceremonious. It is not foreshadowed  or paid off because it is not poetic, because pandemics are not poetic and don’t have a tight arc or an eye for narrative fulfillment. It doesn’t have meaning, the only meaning is in how we choose to respond.

Because this is sociological the movie doesn’t end when doctor Ally Hextall develops a vaccine. What would be the singular victory moment in most films is instead the beginning of a slow, painful march back to stability as first the vaccine needs to be mass produced, and then distributed to billions of people worldwide. It is a dangerous task that needs to be tightly controlled as it requires access to the isolated virus and thus is very slow to ramp up. The film trudges through the immense societal tension that is created when there is a cure, but it will take over a year to make and distribute enough for everyone, a situation that lays bare every societal privilege. Dr. Orantes, played by Marion Cotillard, is kidnapped and held ransom for the vaccine by Chinese villagers who are keenly aware that in the priority of global politics the poor, the rural, and the non-white are at the very back of the line. They are terrorists, but they’re not wrong, just desperate. They are at the back of the line, and the government throws them under the bus anyway. Despite the existence of a vaccine Mitch continues to keep his teenage daughter, Jory, under aggressive quarantine out of legitimate fear of the disease that has been amplified to paranoia by the trauma of losing Beth and Clark, the survivor’s guilt of being naturally immune, and the uncertainty of whether his daughter would share that immunity or not.

In December 2019 the coronavirus COVID-19 was identified by doctors in the city of Wuhan. Over the course of January and February the spread of the virus began to be identified in South Korea, Japan, and Italy and, gradually, most of the rest of the world. The disease itself is not exceptionally lethal when compared to epidemics such as the Black Death in the mid 14th century or the spread of Smallpox through indigenous populations following contact with Europeans in the 16th and 17th centuries, but, first of all, “better than the black death” is a pretty bad standard, and second on a global scale a mortality rate of 1-2 percent in an unchecked pandemic still means, in absolute terms, millions and millions of preventable deaths. This is compounded by the strain that mass illness, even one that is not terribly lethal, inherently places on an already strained society: crowding healthcare systems, disrupting infrastructure, and forcing people to choose between working while ill, and thus infecting others, or losing their jobs. A low mortality rate is often the result of adequate care, but the quality of care goes down as the number of severely ill goes up, as the number of infected healthcare workers reduces the number of people qualified and capable of administering that care. This, in turn, has a knock on effect where unrelated illnesses and injuries become more dangerous. A heart attack or broken leg that would be easily managed under normal circumstances becomes that much worse when there aren’t enough people to help, aren’t enough beds to go around. The more people who are exposed, the more need to roll the dice against that one to two percent, and the more are going to lose.

As of March 2020 most of the United States and Canada have entered a period of uncertain quarantining. Non-essential businesses are closed, events are canceled, workers are being sent home or laid off, borders are being shut down,and the economy is in freefall. Every existing societal problem, from income inequality to housing inequality to healthcare, is being stressed and amplified by not only the virus but the complicity of our governments. News comes out hourly about warnings the people in charge received months ago, and the ways in which they were either ignored or exploited for personal gain. Several American politicians were briefed on the security risks of COVID 19 in late January, and then took to Twitter to decry public fear as a partisan hoax while they dumped their stocks in preparation for a crash that they knew was coming. People in government, their corporate donors, and their pundit allies are getting anxious, debating breaking quarantine and telling everyone to go back to work and roll the dice on whether or not they’re going to die for the economy. We are standing on the precipice of a very uncertain future, and we don’t know if that future is days, weeks, months, or years away. This could be the new normal for a very long time.

So why do I keep watching Contagion?

A dimension of narrative that I like to bring up pretty regularly is the idea that one purpose of fiction is that it allows us a space to practice intense emotions and states without exposing us to the complexities or harms of those states in reality. This is typically in the context of the fanciful: reckless stunts, wild sex, gun fights, or general risky behaviour. We talked about this with Fifty Shades and the idea of non-consent as a fantasy subject.

Watching a disaster film in a disaster, particularly one as sociologically driven as Contagion, is an extension of this. Rather than practicing intense emotional states before they happen, this instinct of exposing ourselves to what we’re already experiencing, amplifying existing emotional states, it works as a form of emotional inoculation. I am scared and anxious and uncertain, and so I will make  myself more scared and more anxious and more uncertain, because it’s still fiction, it’s still safe, it still has an end. It is bounded. Things will get bad, things will then get worse, people will die. The world is unfair, it is unbalanced, it is unjust, and catastrophe will bring out both the best and worst of all of us. And then it will end.

Is there looting, and arson, and murder? Yeah. But it is, ultimately, out of the ordinary. People get paranoid, people get desperate, they riot under stress, but even when food supply lines break down, the world isn’t summarily turned over to those with the bullets and the willingness to use them. There is no Mad Max dystopia, no Fallout post-apocalypse, because at the end of the day humans are pro-social. The cooperative survive.

In 1349, in the midst of the black death, it must have looked like the end of the world. Entire households, entire villages, dying a gross, horrifying, pain ful death, month after month after month. Then for generations, every year wondering if this was the year the plague returned. Was this the year there would be no one left to bury the dead. But people survived. The working class, who bore the brunt of the disease and saw the bodies of their families, clans, and communities piled like cord wood, fought back against the aristocrats who isolated themselves in their towers and remote estates. It was messy, and bloody, and it took decades, but in the end serfdom was abolished. Europe lost upwards of sixty percent of its population over the course of five years, but it wasn’t Armageddon. Things kept going, people kept going, and Europe would go on to be absolute bastards to the rest of the world.

The disease in Contagion is not unrealistic, real diseases have been as deadly, or worse, but it is dramatic. It moves very, very quickly, is highly contagious, and kills a huge number of those who are infected. In reality this aggressiveness would kinda work against the disease, and, morbidly, would help responders limit the spread. It moves so fast and kills so quickly that there’s little question of who has it, and within a couple days everyone who has it is either recovered or dead. This was the aspect of the SARS epidemic that allowed response teams to effectively quarantine the virus where it burnt itself out. That said it’s not impossible that something could spread so aggressively, be so incredibly contagious, that it could spread like wildfire and become almost impossible to contain before anyone even knows what’s going on. But it’s undeniably dramatic and emotionally effective.

48 hours. We can contain two days in our head. A situation where things will get materially worse literally tomorrow or the day after if nothing is done right this second, that’s a comprehensible timeline. Forty eight hours is short enough that in a catastrophe, driven by adrenaline and stress and necessity, you can stay awake that long without even realizing it. COVID’s life cycle is closer to a month. By the time you get sick you’ve already been sick for two weeks, and now you’re in for hell for another two to four weeks. It’s just past the range where it really feels real. Two weeks isn’t long, but it’s still over the line into the indeterminate “future”.

This problem extends in both directions. There’ s only so much space in the mind for time. As the news ramps up, as things get worse, the present crowds out history. The distance between the irrelevant past and the now contracts. ’Days ago’ becomes distant. ‘Months ago’ is irrelevant. Years ago is ancient. By evening even earlier the same day is suspect in its relevance to the Now. We remember January but it has as much presence in the mind as childhood. Our lives become superliminal, displaced from time, as we wrestle with our own minds and how they try to process the chronology of our own existence. By Sunday, Friday no longer feels real, and yet every day’s news is the consequence of decisions made fourteen, twenty one, twenty eight days ago. Today’s responses won’t yield results until well into next month. This flaw in our meat is a gap into which charlatans, hucksters, and conmen can drive a wedge and pry us open, and pry they will try.

When I first saw Contagion in 2012 I thought the weakest element was what I considered at the time to be the demonization of online media. Jude Law’s character plays an online pundit and conspiracy theorist who preaches to an audience of millions about an herbal tincture of forsythia that he claims is the cure, a cure he just-so-happens to be selling. It is, in 2020, the realest element of the film. Herbal cures, hydrogen water, steam treatment, teas, magnets, suspensions of silver, tinctures, and tonics. We’ve got pastors standing at the pulpit telling their congregation it's all a hoax, that there’s no reason to suspend services, that their nebulous enemies are just trying to shut them down. We now live in a world where the US president told people based on a rumour that chloroquine, a drug used for treating malaria and lupus, was the cure, so a man in Arizona ate a packet of fish tank cleaner containing the chemical. He’s dead now. And that is, again, all part of it.

There is an escapism to a story about horrible things, because that story is complete. It is bounded. It provides a framework to horror that doesn’t exist in the real present. Our future is uncertain, beset on all sides by devils, and we can come out better or we can come out worse or we can die and none of us knows which it will be and we’re all screaming at those in power to make the moral choice, to choose better.

And I am in an absolute haze. My daily life has not much been impacted, overtly. I’m already an agoraphobic shut-in wh o worksonline and has a bad sleep schedule. But it’s too much. I’m tired all the time. I can’t pay attention to the news and  Ican’t not pay attention to the news. Working is difficult.  I have a long history of respiratory illness. I am at risk.

On one hand I am deeply privileged to be in a position where I am and can remain isolated. On the other hand I can’t even think about the other hand.

Disease does not have a narrative meaning, it does not have an eye for poetry or twists or closure. The only meaning is in how we respond. So I watch Contagion over and over and over again. Because I need to practice emotions, and I need to live in a bounded world, and I need to believe we can choose better.

Alder Oculea shares our delusions. They are unknown, a Mothman and a resident. While they might be sanguine sometimes they get enigmatic. They are a sub in bed, and pansexual. They are into wax play and outdoor sex and want a dom partner. 

Headcanons

Alder has lived alone on the large estate that once belonged to their sponsor since her death. It’s outside the actual limits of town, a sprawling plantation style home that has been a part of the bayou landscape for several generations, and half reclaimed by the swamp. There is a distant feel of age to the place but warm and inviting; they couldn’t fathom living in town when it’s so peaceful and quiet out at the edge of the swamps.

Preferring warm colors, soft blankets and other such comforting ideas, their home reflects that desire for peace and tranquility. Always with an open door, welcoming to others, more than a few times Alder has allowed wayward rescues to stay with them until sponsors were found. Being a resident by granting of the council they have never had a rescue of their own, many think them not really suited for it with their tendency to daydream and get lost in distractions, but it can also be said that plenty of people have found refuge during their first uneasy days in that comforting place while they adjust to town.

Because they have so much access to old tomes and the like Alder has extensive knowledge in Arcane arts, even if they lack the ability to use that knowledge because of the limitations of their species. The shop they share with Felix Jepsen, an old friend from the years before either of them came to the town, is an all hours bookstore that focuses on magic and also a coffee shop. Much of the time Alder can be found there if not at home, they don’t sleep like most people so they’re usually there at any given time sorting through books and reading. They also are well-versed in translating a great many languages after decades of study in them.

A comfortably passive soul, Alder is very rare to cause trouble. They do wander a great deal but haven’t left the town in nearly ten years. It is home, they have no want to return to the outside world and know it’s likely they wouldn’t be allowed to anyway with how useful their abilities might be as the darkness grows closer.

Very often quiet, they do not fear speaking since it has been a long time since the last time they earned the punishment that came with breaking the rules of their power but it has become such a habit they don’t break it much. They enjoying listening to others so it doesn’t seem a need to speak endlessly when others have things that need to be said.

Overall Alder enjoys life, people, and strives to find the good in it all. They usually manage to, building good memories to replace the ones that are gone now, learning new faces to add to those they call friends; peace is about balance and Alder deeply believes it is only a matter of wanting to reach it. While they wish for the best for everyone they do mourn somewhat for those who carry sorrow, knowing that isn’t always a burden anyone can ease for someone else.

As for Alder’s own pains, they run deep. Loss is at the heart of it, of themselves, of people, of good things. Many speculate there is something deep and dark within them, can sense it, and this is very much the truth to the nature of creature that Alder is by design. But as with all things power is what one makes of it, and it can either lead a person to terrible actions or wisdom.

To look at them though it would be hard to guess there is pain there, Alder is optimistic and charming, gentle-natured; life is something to experience with joy, not to let the past take away the reason for living. They’re a bit comical at times, quirky, and it always seem that they know more than other people around them. But earnestly friendly, they strive to try to make things better for those around them.

History

Alder has forgotten the date of their birth beyond that it was in the latter eighteen hundreds, too many details lost to the wave of time and the demands of their abilities. There are vague recollections of decades that were written about in books but most dates before the past hundred or so have been handed away in trade for visions. Exactly when their existence began is questionable but what is not is that it did so as a human.

Contrary to what much of the world assumes, their race is not one born but rather passed on via mantle one to the next. A sort of Fae-connected creature, a harbinger of the future, Mothman are a nearly extinct creature that has lived in the shadow of Fate since the beginning of all races. Alder only had the misfortune to have stumbled across one during its’ transformation from one life to the next, a sort of stage similar to that of their real moth counterparts. A spirit that abandons a spent soul for the next, passing on the purpose with it.

Alder has lived as such a creature for centuries but using their power has taken their origin from them, taken many things, and while they have wandered both Europe and the then-budding United States, it has always been with the purpose of watching what will unfold in the world and offer warning to those who dwell in its’ path. Unfortunately it was in the States that Alder encountered something unexpected in the form of people who twisted that purpose, made it something dark, and what was one only an effort to safeguard became something terrible to fear. No longer only a messenger but looked at as a harbinger of doom, it was a crushing blow to the otherwise bright-souled being.

Still with a job to do, fearful of it being passed on if not, Alder continued onward as the world around them grew endlessly more cold. But what of it really when life was filled with such amazing things it was impossible to allow the sting to linger. Increasingly though the world pushed and finally, both curious and seeking rest, Alder arrived in the bayou. With that town came acceptance, happiness that slowly washed away the past few years of solitude, friendship that was invaluable. While it was true they caught the attention of many it was one who needed their presence that Alder choose as a sponsor. A broken, damaged soul in need of the calm just as much as they needed coaxing back into trusting others; the two of them became closer than even Alder expected. There was an incredible freedom in giving away their memories in the bond because in way they finally regained them. So many nights were spent sitting with her and listening while she recounted tales of a history they could not recall. It was more than they had ever hoped for, a real sort of peace.

But it didn’t last. They knew she would die, fearful to do so against her wishes they peered into the yet to be and saw her end. It was heartbreaking knowing that there was nothing to do to stop it, knowing it could only turn so much worse with the effort. She forbid them from telling her, required the hardest promise to keep. And when she was murdered, as they knew would come to pass, Alder grieved more deeply than they ever had before.

The pain did not pass with ease, several seasons came and went before they were willing to once again open their eyes to the world around them, a heavy sleep that nearly triggered transformation. But with the uneasy feeling of the darkness outside town growing, pressing inward on the home they do so love, Alder woke and returned to a sort of cautious vigil. To intervene would cost them greatly but the visions come more and more demanding, the darkness promising so much destruction; it may not be long before they have no other choice but to speak out.

Species Info

Alder’s race is a vastly misunderstood one. Seen in recent history as monsters who bring doom with them, the truth is they are simply vessels for the visions that hold such things. Time and again though, in an effort to stop an event before it happens, they have stepped in but the results have always made the disaster worse. Fate does not intend for them to change the course, simply to know of it, doing otherwise always amplified the end result. It is for that reason that the Mothman often recounted in recent tales have only arrived as a warning, a silent presence that has inspired feat in hope that the horror can avoided.

Being a race connected to the Fae, the Mothman are not of the human world, only serve as watchers of it. They spawn from a spirit that has an endless lifespan, living out time in a host body and becoming merged with them entirely until said host is no longer fitting. At that point the host goes through a metamorphosis of sorts, the body falling into deep slumber and gradually turning to dust from which the spirit will emerge in their moth form to travel to the next host and begin the process again. At one time they were a much more wide-spread race but most all of them now have buried themselves in forgotten places and refused to wake from that slumber.

Mothman are drawn to their flame; this is a single aspect that will continue to allow them to exist within their host for as long as the host still seeks that flame. It can be any number of things that inspire strong emotion; some flames are those of anger, other discovery or pain, hope, and most any other emotion than can be tied to the human condition. The spirit lacks these motivations themselves so they need the host to be one who strives for it, giving a reason to their existence. Any Mothman is not solely human nor inhuman but a combination of two beings that exist entirely as one. Alder no more thinks of their inhuman side as different than the rest of them than anyone else might think any aspect of personality is separate from the full sum of who they are. Each Mothman has always been different in that regard, and none openly speak of their flame even among each other; it is a deeply personal idea. And a dangerous one, as they can be manipulated by strong forces that control that aspect. In simple terms that flame is the one idea worth always chasing that acts as the will to live for the creature.

As a whole Mothman, in spite of the term being considered masculine, are nonbinary. Agendered, they exist outside the human concept of it, though having bodies that are human means they do have biological genders. Those bodies function the same as normal humans in most regards, with addition to magic unique to the species.

Magic

Visions:

The foundation of power for Mothman, visions are their purpose. They experience first a feeling, much like a tingling, in regards to an event, and can choose to look into the future of it to see how things will play out. They are only granted visions associated with great loss or terror and these do come at a price. The larger the disaster the higher the toil, the more demanded of them; and every vision requires a trade of memories in order to use the power. This trade means that the oldest memories one has, sometimes the dearest, are taken away from them, buried deep in their mind in a place they cannot reach. It is for this reason that many Mothman have lived centuries with very little recollection of their human life beyond the sense of knowing they were human in that past. Another aspect of the visions is that Mothman are not allowed to stop what is to come to pass. They can be present, they can observe, but they cannot step in to halt a disaster. Doing so holds a two-fold punishment; one being that the event’s tragedy is amplified and the second being a curse of words. The voice of a Mothman who has stepped outside the rules will bring terrible things to any who hear it for an unknown amount of time after; usually the larger the event the more time it takes for this punishment to stop. There is some truth to the possibility that any words spoken in anger or ill intention can actually cause disaster to strike as well.

Illuminating Sight:

All Mothman have the ability to see clearly in darkness, vision just as sharp then as though in daylight, and have a red cast to their eyes in the dark. It isn’t a result of any magic used, their eyes are just highly reflective of light and the red glow is that intensified. It is a very unsettling sight to witness, and one of the traits that has resulted in the race being seen as monsters. There is also a hypnotic quality to it, staring into those eyes can render a person motionless, unable to pull away from the gaze until it is broken by Alder. On the other side of the spectrum they are sensitive to very intense light; during daylight hours they have usually have time to adjust but if presented with something too sudden the result is being blinded for several moments. This sensitivity makes it difficult at night to be in brightly lit areas when their eyes are naturally more sensitive, and as such most of the time Alder’s home is only faintly lit with candles.

Illusions:

A power that varies in strength, and the reason people look at their race as monsters; Mothman have the ability to mask their true bodies with illusions of terrifying creatures. These illusions are carefully controlled, powerful, and even supernatural creatures, unless they are also of Fae origin, cannot see through it. They have to be careful not to be touched, however, as it won’t break the spell but obviously will confuse as there is no the physical form to match the visual.

Fear Casting

As a means of defense, all Mothman have an odd power of mind manipulation. In times of stress their skin develops a faint dust to it that, if touched or breathed in by others, will cause intense hallucinations. These are terrifying, every bit laced with the worst fears of the person suffering them. Like a drug, the length of time which they last depends greatly on how much a person comes into contact with the substance. This dust can be stored, it does not lose power after being separated from Alder’s skin, and in condensed enough concentration can cause permanent madness.

Immortality

So long as their flame does not dampen too much Alder will not age or die with time, only continue onward. It is true that their body is stronger than a human but still can suffer injury just the same as one, though also capable of natural healing over time where as humans would not be able to at the speed nor the level that they can. Grave injury that would likely kill a human though would put them into that slumber that leads to transformation and Alder would die in a way; body being abandoned and the spirit leaving it to find another host.

All hail, dear readers of my journal! There is no more absurd occupation than trying to convince a person of anything. The rescue of a drowning man is still the drowning man's own job. The process of the struggle of those in power with COVID-19 has turned into a theater of the absurd. As the saying goes, knowledge is power but the unknowledgeables are overpowering. Pharmaceutical companies making COVID-19 vaccines are making huge profits, and their owners are becoming billionaires. WHO, with its monetary handouts to the governments of countries, motivates them to conduct blanket vaccination of the population, and the latter, in turn, defame all opponents of this process through the media. Recently I learned from reliable sources that 70% of seriously ill patients diagnosed with COVID-19 who are now in medical institutions in Israel have completed a full course of vaccination. So, life refutes the thesis of immunization supporters that people who have completed a full course of vaccination bare a new infection with coronavirus in a mild form. On the contrary, vaccination leads to the gradual destruction of the immune system of people and contributes to the spread of COVID-19, as well as other infections. As they say, teach a fool to bow with grace and he would fall flat on his face. It is difficult to avoid infection during a pandemic, when the actions of the authorities to combat it multiply the number of people infected with COVID-19. Scientists have counted more than two hundred strains of coronavirus that do not pose a great danger, as they continue to mutate and weaken after each mutation. In parallel, those who created the "Wuhan" virus continue to infect the population in different parts of the planet with its new modifications such as "delta" and others, hoping that they will no longer be susceptible to mutations, which means they will not weaken and exterminate as much as possible number of people. This will accomplish the task set to reduce the population of the Earth to the level of one billion. At the same time, those in power do not stop trying to unleash a global war, creating new conflicts and hotbeds of tension around the world. It is for this reason that Trump initiated the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, which is what his successor Biden is doing today. Now the world has received another terrorist threat from the Taliban movement, and a new wave of refugees awaits Europe. Many are wondering why a wave of natural disasters has hit the world recently. The representatives of contemporary science, which has long ceased to be such, are trumpeting about global warming, allegedly caused by human-induced carbon dioxide emissions. In fact, this is another fake, since one active volcano emits more carbon dioxide into the Earth's atmosphere per day than all the cars in the world in a year. Taking into account the fact that volcanic activity is observed everywhere, in reality the share of carbon dioxide emissions as a result of industrial activities of people tends to zero. Modern "science" has no idea about the deep processes in the Earth's atmosphere and the reasons that give rise to them. It only observes the consequences of natural phenomena and is engaged in statistics. The current "rampage" of nature strongly resembles what the biblical stories about the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah say about. I remember that their inhabitants came into conflict with God and ignored Him, for which they were punished. At present something similar is happening in the world. The Triune Essence indwells now on Earth, and people, especially the power brokers, pigheadedly ignore this fact. That is why the Creator decided to remind about Himself, using the forces of nature. As soon as Mrs. Merkel set up a "get-together" with Biden and ignored the interests of Ukraine, where the Triune Essence abides, the heavens opened up over Germany. As for the series of natural disasters that have been overtaking Turkey in recent years, it is the compulsion to peace by the Creator in response to aggressive actions against Armenia and Erdogan's attempts to build on blood a new pan-Turkist empire. Traditionally, Russia is also taking a beating for Putin's unwillingness to get out of the Crimea and the Donbass. And this is just the beginning. All those who have tried and continue trying to harm the Triune Essence are also facing the music. If you, "good gentlemen," do not hang on every word, then understanding will come through circumstances that will turn your life upside down. There are two ways of knowing for a person. The first is the path of wisdom, and the second is the path of committing personal mistakes that can be fatal. Ukrainian President Zelenskiy, due to his inexperience, chose the second path. The mantras about Western aid were dispelled when the betrayal by Merkel and Macron was revealed. Only a lie is convenient, but the truth is bitter and impartial. Russia has enough strength and resources to "swallow" Ukraine overnight, and if this does not happen, then it is not at all because Putin is afraid of the West, led by the United States, which in 2014 gave tacit consent to the start of a "lightning war" and destruction of Ukrainian statehood. In fact, Putin was stopped outright thanks to the intervention of the Triune Essence (that is, the Creator). He should have understood long ago that it is difficult to see and accept the truth when you are surrounded by sycophants and lickspittles. It took Putin 5 years to realize Who opposes him in Ukraine, and now in Armenia. He dismissed about thirty generals, believing that they were sabotaging his instructions to seize the entire territory of Ukraine. It is difficult to say how long it will take Zelenskiy to see the real picture of what is happening. He has no idea that he should have lost the presidential election and could not have left the stadium, where he participated in the presidential debate with Poroshenko, adequate, alive and healthy. Zelenskiy is still alive only because I protect him. Blessed is he who does not know. The president of a country is not a position that allows one to learn by making mistakes, because a lamb cannot survive in a wolf pack. First you need to stop fussing. There is no need to imitate hectic activity and play the "peacemaker" when nothing depends on you. Israel has been at war with the Arab world for decades. It is not in the power of the President of Ukraine to stop the war until Putin wants it. His troops are preparing to repel possible attacks from the territory of Ukraine (on the part of the Triune Essence), and he himself is looking for an opportunity to reverse events and return what was captured without losing his face. His article on Ukraine was addressed to me, and not to someone else, because the Triune Essence appeared on the territory of the former USSR, which means that God (Creator) came to the peoples which inhabited it, and not only to the Ukrainians. This is also an answer to the question why I recently intervened in the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia on the side of the latter. What kind of Master of the House am I, if I do not stand up for peace and order in it? The current rulers are blind and deaf, which means that they leave me no choice but to force them to peace through circumstances. First, remove the log from your eye, and only then go to get the hangnails from the eyes of other people – something other is from the evil. The world is not at all the way people see it. The battlefield of Good and Evil is there. The agents of the latter are all sorts of people with "unconventional" abilities. At present such agents in the power are Merkel and Poroshenko. Of course, there are also some others, but from time immemorial such people served as a "secret weapon" of the power to suppress the "controlled majority", but they were deprived of access into the power itself. Zelenskiy had no idea with whom he clashed in the elections and, if not for my interference, he could have lost not only the chances for the presidency, but also the very life. The first meeting of the President of Ukraine with Merkel ended with a "tremor" for her, and the current one will finally undermine her health, as she will definitely begin to influence Zelenskiy before the latter's trip to the United States and will receive a worthy rebuff. By the way, it was the possession of this kind of abilities that made Merkel a long-liver on the Olympus of the power. Neither Putin, nor Patrushev, nor Patriarch Kirill have such "abilities", and therefore, by habit, they resort to the services of strong shamans, witches and witchers, magicians and other agents of Evil. At the same time, science denies the very existence of something like that, which is very convenient for the authorities, because it allows the powers that be to possess a secret and effective weapon to solve "unsolvable" problems. It is possible that after reading this article, the President of Ukraine will take a different look at the people around him. More recently it is interesting to keep an eye on the behavior of persons involved in the power. On the one hand, they are trying in every possible way to kill me, and on the other – to get ahead of the competitors in order to be the first to meet with me, believing that the sword does not cut off the guilty head. And a little bit about the good. Everything will be as the Creator wants, for a human only presupposes, and He disposes.

Процесс борьбы власть предержащих с COVID-19 превратился в театр абсурда. Как говорится, ученье свет, а неученых тьма. Фармацевтические компании, производящие вакцины против COVID-19, получают огромную прибыль, а их владельцы становятся миллиардерами. ВОЗ своими денежными подачками правительствам стран мотивирует их на поголовную вакцинацию населения, а те, в свою очередь, шельмуют через средства массовой информации всех противников этого процесса. На днях узнал из достоверных источников, что 70% тяжелых больных с диагнозом COVID-19, пребывающих ныне в медицинских учреждениях Израиля, прошли полный курс вакцинации. Так что жизнь опровергает тезис сторонников иммунизации о том, что люди, прошедшие полный курс вакцинации, переносят новое заражение коронавирусом в легкой форме. Наоборот, вакцинация приводит к постепенному разрушению иммунной системы людей и способствует распространению COVID-19, равно как и других инфекций.
