My Idea For “The Great Australian Housing Scheme”.
The Great Australian Housing Scheme is a concept I came up with that would hopefully address Australia’s problematic housing crisis.
It all stems from my concept of building 1.2 million identical homes over five years. This probably overly ambitious plan, has a massive price tag of $729 billion but I’ve backed it up with a fully resourced scope of work and bill of materials for each house that then allowed me to come up with what I’m calling a construction blueprint.
I emphasises community involvement, job creation and economic growth through a multi-faceted funding model and standardized construction practices.
In my original article The Great Australian Housing Scheme is the name of the funding model I thought of.
In any event, the scheme seeks to stabilize the housing market, reduce homelessness and foster regional development while ensuring financial sustainability and social cohesion.
It all emerged out of my frustration, at the time it felt as though more building and construction companies have gone bankrupt since the 23rd of May 2022 than houses have been built.
You watch TV and see dozens of families sleeping in tents at parks, couples living in their cars at car parks, people living in tents inside houses and sit there shaking your head as companies that have been operating in Australia for over 40 years are now closing their doors for the last time.
I wanted to at least attempt to put together a somewhat reasonable response to Australia’s unprecedented housing crisis, just in case there is a change of leadership in 2025 and just in case the those leader might be interested in attempting to try something different.
There’s just so much work that needs to be done to try and fix our problems, everyone now realises that our housing woes have been made worse by very high immigration rates.
Every day that goes by, the number of people struggling to find affordable and secure accommodation gets worse, so I encourage as many Australians that area able, to come up with their own ideas and publish them, don’t worry, you can do all of this for free.
You can create a free website at Google Sites and then it’s just a matter of letting the world know about it via all of the various free social media platforms such as facebook, linkedin, medium, quora, minds, reddit, tumblr, blogger, X (formerly twitter), threads and there’s probably others I’ve not thought of.
Getting back to my concept of The Great Australian Housing Scheme, my main idea for funding it was inspired by former successful national campaigns like war bonds between 1915 and 1921.
I thought we might be able to mobilize the collective financial strength and spirit of the nation.
The primary objectives include rapidly increasing housing supply, stabilizing the housing market, eventually reducing homelessness, creating substantial employment opportunities, stimulating economic growth and fostering regional development.
The funding model combines traditional investment methods with creative financing solutions to secure the estimated $729 billion required.
It includes a national investment program (like the war bonds) with accessible investment options for all Australian citizens, a national housing lottery and multi-level government support through tax incentives and contributions. I also came up with a proposal for selling government-owned media (ABC and SBS) and lots of public service salary optimization to generate additional funds.
The implementation strategy focuses on standardized design and mass production to achieve economies of scale.
Centralized manufacturing processes and strategic selection of regional centres for development are also key factors for making it work.
The scheme also emphasizes comprehensive supply chain optimisation, innovative funding models and streamlined approval processes to expedite construction.
The key regional centres I’ve identified for development are Tamworth and Narrabri in NSW, Wandoan in QLD, Sale in VIC and Geraldton in WA.
There are various reasons for this and I explain all of that in the original article.
With things the way they are, I think we’ve got a snowflakes chance in hell of getting enough labour to build all of these houses we need.
So to address the critical shortage of skilled construction workers we have now and would have significantly more if tried to build 1.2 Million Homes in a short period, I’ve included to the scheme a comprehensive workforce development program through “The Building And Construction National Service Program”.
This program involves a nine-year service commitment, training each participant in three fully accredited building and construction trades.
It would be centred around a massive training facility that would need to be built in Muswellbrook, NSW.
26, 000 participants for each yearly intake will receive industry-recognized certifications and guaranteed employment opportunities upon completion.
Overall, my ‘Great Australian Housing Scheme’ concept’s social and economic impacts are far-reaching, including housing market stabilization, regional development, employment generation, economic stimulation and improved quality of life for all Australians.
By increasing housing supply, my scheme aims to stabilize property prices, reduce housing stress and enhance housing accessibility.
Regional development will create sustainable communities, improve infrastructure, and provide new economic opportunities.
I would hope that a very large chunk of the 1.2 Million Homes become available as what I know as “Housing Commission” accommodation, in fact, unless that happens we’re not really going to chip away at the homelessness problem significantly.
The Great Australian Housing Scheme I’ve come up with isn’t perfect and would need the help of some very smart people to help make it work.
I’d like to think that at least it represents a bold and transformative vision for Australia’s future, it would address our housing needs while creating a lasting legacy of sustainable communities, skilled workforce development and economic prosperity.
Through its comprehensive approach, my scheme aims to set a new standard for national development initiatives and demonstrate the power of collective action in addressing national challenges.
So all we need now is for someone to fix the baseload power supply problems and about 400 other things and we’ll all be walking around with huge smiles on our faces.

13. Tell me about one of the best days you can remember.
By the time a person has lived over 86 years their memory of a best day has been multiplied many times over.  I find it impossible to rank my best days.  As each occurred, I was certain it was the best day ever.  I have four children so each of their safe arrivals as really beautiful healthy babies were certainly great days of incredible joy and relief.  Seeing all my children graduate from high school and then college were very proud and joyful times.  Those were great days.  My children’s weddings and my own two marriages were days of joy.  To choose a best day among them is impossible.
Those were all epic events in a family’s life But some very best days come in the living if everyday life.  I fondly remember climbing Mt Kearsarge with Anne and Diggs several times, a joyful experience every time.  I  also climbed Kearsarge with my children’s cousins from Scotland, Maurice and Avril Paterson.  I was happy we were in touch with them and remain so to this day.  Most visitors to Warner were treated to a climb of Kearsarge, always a very good day if not the best.
While I lived in Warner I belonged to and served on the Board of the Warner Historical Society.   I chaired the Barn Committee.  Every Tuesday and Saturday while the weather permitted we held a barn sale.  people were very generous.  The barn was a financial success and many fun times.  Joan Carroll and Polly Diaz and I washed every dish and glass before it was on display.  Joan washed and ironed every piece of doll clothing donated.  Lucy McQueen, a children’s book illustrator helped us sell our wares.  Many others worked in the barn as well.  Those were great fun days for a very great cause and raised much needed funds .
When we lived in Bedford, MA, we bought a cottage on Lake Winnipesaukee at  20 mile Bay.  All days spent there were, “best” days.   In summer we swam and canoed on the lake.  In winter we skied at Mt. Ossipee.  We frequented the summer theaters in Tamworth and Wolfboro.  There was a variety of good places to dine
and every day at the cottage was a best day.  One winter day was almost the exception. I drove up on a Friday after work with Peter and his friend, Larry.  We planned to ski the next day.  A 28 inch snow had fallen on the previous Wednesday and caved in the back deck  We dug our way into the house.  I got up early the next morning wanting to shovel off the part of the deck still standing before it collapsed.  I ate an orange and began to shovel.  I soon realized I was having an allergic reaction,  My face was swollen and my glasses now sat on my face at a rakish angle.  I woke the boys, told them to stay put til I returned.  In  the ER I was given Adrenalin and Benadryl.  We skied the day at Ossipee and it was another wonderful, and best  day at he cottage.
I had great days with my grandchildren.  Hillary was a super dancer and I loved her recitals.   She always had a tap solo. She was great.  Anne played flute and piccolo.  She was also an aspiring playwright and once asked if I could make her 10 costumes for a play she had written for two days hence.  Fortunately it was set in Roman times and they all wore togas or chitons and used ropes for belts.  Her play went on as scheduled and Anne’s picture and story made the front page of the Newburyport newspaper.  One day when I went to school to meet them and walk home Digger’s teacher told me she learned more from him than she taught him.  Harry wore glasses, looked studious and loved big words so we obliged him by using the most academic word to fit the occasion.  It wasn’t long before we would hear 2 year old Harry telling us something was, “extraordinary” or  “incredibly interesting”.  Kalote and i made dolls.  They were just tubes made of muslin with eyes, nose and mouth embroidered in place.  A necktie or scarf separated their heads from their bodies.  They had no limbs but were all elegantly dressed.  Kalote loved her dolls and it was a best day to get a doll made.  Will did not particularly like the garden in Warner.  I think he didn’t notice much happening there until I put my shovel into a potato plant and asked Will to see if he could find any potatoes.  He was hooked and ready to dig all the potatoes.  All my grandchildren could swim and we had many a great pool party at the Warner house but as I was in my 70’s i knew the 27 acres, pool, large garden and three acres of lawn to mow was soon going to be impossible and I sold the house in which I had lived the longest and where I  had some of the best days  ever.
Now I have a home on Mountain Rd in Concord and it is here that I welcome my beautiful great grandchildren.  They can turn any day into the very best day ever.  Joan Clementine has just turned 5 She loves school and wants very much to learn to read all her books.  Everett Floyd is named for me.  Ev calls me by my full name, “greatgranny”.  Like Joan, he can make any day  a best day ever.  Laura Winter is going to be 2 years old on October 26.  Her middle name is Winter because she chose to be born on a day Boston had an unexpected snow storm instead of November 1, when she was scheduled to be delivered by Cesarean Section.  Laura, like Joan and Ev has very curly hair and enough charm for ten.   Murphy Harriet turned 1 on 2-1-21.  She is self assured and assertive.  She approaches challenges with absolute confidence.  Any day with Murphy is a good day and a day with all four is a best day ever.
A good day in my garden could be a best day ever.  Seeing a great play or stage production or being in some exotic place in another country can all be occasions for a best day  ever.  I have had the good fortune to experience all those wonderful things but now my best day ever is spent with my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

I am still on the critters on Mari’s farm so...
The pigs are easy. Originally she did berkshires on pasture and silvopasture, fresh out of college, then added tamworths, then Triath followed her home and now she does tamworths and berkshire/whatever-the-fuck-Triath-is crosses. At best he’s a feral hog (far removed from where they’re common...) and at worst he’s some sort’ve not-pig that’s decided he likes Mari. Normal numbers for the breeders are two boars with seven sows each, which doesn’t sound like much but at about 8 piglets a sow twice a year that’s about 220 piglets a year she’s breeding out. There’s a reason she eventually cracked and hired somebody on. Some piglets get sold as breeding stock, show stock, or feeder pigs (Triath’s get are in high demand as breeders, they grow well and somehow have good temperaments) but the vast majority go to the butcher and are sold as either basic cuts, sausage, or smoked meat- the latter two she does in-house with a portion of the meat she gets back. Most of the meat is sold- local farmers’ market, pre-ordered by local buyers, shipped to restaurants, shipped to non-local buyers (fun fact: in the ‘present’ Monette only buys pork products from this farm for Monette Reasons)- but in true country fashion some of it is traded for things, some goes in the freezer, some goes to charity. She also sells lard, fat for making lard and soap, soup bones, skin, cracklins, and offal- mostly in the form of dog food because that’s the local market and it does her well.
The goats are inherited, technically. Her grandmother kept goats and she’s attached to the whole ‘having goats around’ thing. Plus, she’s developed a taste for goat milk that grabbing cow from the store cannot satisfy. Keeps alpines, four does that she AIs once a year, averaging eight kids between them. The milk she doesn’t use in-house gets turned into butter and cheese which is also used in-house or sold, with the leftovers from that supplementing the pig feed. Lowers costs some. Most of the kids get sold, either post-slaughter or live animals, and whatever of them she can’t sell also go in the freezer.
And finally the chickens, which mostly free range. They’re not Marian’s, they’re Jadie’s, but they live on the farm because, fuck it there’s space and Jadie lives there too. Right now primarily they’re working off a neighbor’s old flock- decided to move nearer to the grandkids and sold the flock off cheap- about ten hens, a mix of orpingtons, rhode island reds, wyandottes, and a single easter egger. They also order in about two dozen delawares every year to raise up for meat. They sell most of the meat, with a chunk going to family- sort’ve a ‘I know you don’t know I’m working as a farmhand but sorry for quitting my job and becoming a farmhand’ (as far as their family knows these are all the chickens they raise and it’s a hobby the farmer they’re doing marketing for helps them with)- and the eggs that aren’t used in-house (they eat about a dozen a week, they get ~5.5 dozen while the hens are laying) are sold. Mostly as homemade mayonnaise, but also they’re gauging interest in prepared eggs (pickled, smoked, salted, etc). Only offering pickled right now (they tried for more ‘exotic’ fair straight off, but no dice, gotta ease these country folk into it) but they’re selling out of them so it’s a start. The things you do when the fresh egg market in your area is swamped. They sell their products at the farmers’ market, same booth as Marian’s shit. The plan is to expand the business over time, eventually get their own self-sustaining dual-purpose flock together.
All together they’re both making a profit. Not much of one on Jadie’s end just yet, but Marian is making enough to set aside some decent savings for the future- whether that bring emergencies, a family, or just having to retire- while being able to insure Jadie and pay them slightly above the average wage for a farmhand in their area. Thankfully Jadie doesn't have to worry too much about bills, they’re living on the farm free of charge and have no college debt, so they’re working on a pretty nice nest-egg themselves to be used either to start a family someday or handle emergency expenses or buy a farm of their own.

What to Do to Place Free Classified Ads Online
If you are dealing with online advertising, you know you can reach a much larger audience than you could if you used traditional print ads like they did years ago. While print ads are still used, it is becoming much easier and more beneficial to advertise online instead. Whether you are trying to sell your car, some old clothes or your home, using free classified ads online can be a great asset to people who are selling anything.
Tumblr media
The first thing you will need to do before you place your ad is to consider the category in which you will place your ad. While some items have obvious categories, others may require you to think a little bit. It is important to make sure your ad gets in the right category or you decrease the chances someone will find it. If you aren't sure, browse the categories, looking for items similar to yours.
After you know where you will put your free classified ads online, you can work on writing your ad. Make sure you consider how many characters you have if there is a limit. You will need to include as much detail as you can so your potential buyers will know exactly what they are purchasing. The last thing you want is a buyer who feels he was misled by your ad. Always leave yourself open to questions.
Once someone has looked over your ad to make sure you don't have any spelling errors and all the necessary information is included, you can post your ad. Make sure you monitor your ad so you know if anyone is interested in your items. Because the site you are posting on is free, you can leave your ad up as long as you need so you don't need to worry about your item not selling. It doesn't matter how long it takes to sell because it won't cost you anything.
When you have items to sell, one of the best ways to do so is to place free classified ads online. This will allow you to reach a much larger audience more easily. Best of all, you won't need to pay for advertising like you would elsewhere. This gives you more flexibility, especially if your item doesn't sell as quickly as you would like. After you place the ad, you will need to monitor it so you know when your item sells.

A new start after 60: ‘We both like gardening – so we became farmers’
Bob and Ann Paton thought they were just moving to their dream country home – until they had the idea to turn its six acres into a small farm. Now one field is home to a two-acre orchard. Two others house polytunnels, herbs and 50 varieties of vegetable. The fourth belongs to their Tamworth pigs. As Hexhamshire Organics, they sell 100 organic vegetable boxes a week, and supply Northumberland’s only Michelin-starred restaurant. “I used to say I retired, but now I say I had a career change,” Bob says.
They have never worked so hard. “It’s usually the light that stops us,” Ann says. She brings a career in catering and retail to bear on the business, while Bob is the planner. “Plan tomorrow today. Plan next week this week. Plan next month this month,” he says. His spreadsheet logs “every single vegetable”, from sowing to harvest, and calculates output to the square foot.
Ann puts it more simply. “We are an elderly couple growing vegetables in Northumberland. It happens to be organic. And it happens to be – although we say so ourselves – not bad produce.” #organicfood #organicfarming #life #authentic Source : Guardian Newspape

Buying and Selling Cars Using Free Classified Ads Website
Are you thinking of buying or selling Cars, SUVs, Trucks, Vans, Classic Cars, Motorcycles, Off Road Vehicles, Aircrafts or boats? Finding the right buyer or seller is always a challenging task. You will have to find the right source from where you can search for the automobiles of your choice and automotive items and parts.
Tumblr media
Until few years ago when we wanted to buy cars, SUVs or trucks we had to visit the showroom and if we wanted to buy a used vehicle, then we will have to scour the newspapers looking for advertisements from the owners that sell their cars, SUVs, trucks vans or their boats. This used to be a highly time consuming task.
Those who wanted to sell their cars, motorcycles or off road vehicles, received very little exposure to their newspaper classified ads. Moreover, it cost them a lot of money. However today you can get vast exposure to your sales ads on the internet. There are number of classified ads sites where you can post your sales ad.
You will also be able to post photos of your cars and SUVs. Free classified ads websites get huge traffic and your sales ads will get highest visibility possible on the internet. Moreover, when people search for a specific model car, SUV, van, water craft boat or other automotive items and parts, there are good chances that your ad will get listed in the search results. This again will get a lot of attention from the internet users.
Online classified ad sites therefore helps both buyers and sellers. These websites create a common platform where buyers and sellers of cars, SUVs, classic cars, motorcycles can meet. You can find free classified ads websites that will allow you to get basic listings free of charge. By using a free classifieds ad site you not only get the required exposure for your sales ad but you will also be able to save a considerable amount of money.
You will be able to post your classified ads in just few clicks from the comfort of your home. The same applies to searching for the best deals on cars, motorcycles, off road vehicles, aircraft, boats, vans, trucks etc. You will be able to get the best products and deals lined up in a matter of few seconds. You cannot expect such a fast way to find the best cars deals or SUV deals.
The right place therefore to buy and sell your automobiles and automotive items and parts is to visit a reliable free classifieds website. This website allows you to post or search free classified ads using a very simple process. This is a high traffic website that will guarantee highest online exposure for your vehicles that you would like to sell.

It may seem to some readers we spend most of our time enjoying ourselves. Together, with family, and with friends.
True, life in the Teutenberg/Walsh boathold (no household here!) it’s vastly different to the majority of people in our peer group. However, we are NOT retired. Barry has another two and half years to go; Sandra just over eight.
We do not, and neither of us ever have, rely on any form of public funds (i.e. state benefits). We DO have a small savings buffer as we’ve both ‘worked’ in the usual way for over 35 years each in our chosen professions. We have our boat, NB Areandare.
Adapting as we go …
This year has seen a marked difference in our travelling and trading plans. One of the most important things we’ve learnt since our bold/brave/crazy/impetuous (take your pick depending on your perspective!) decision to sell bricks and mortar, move to England, buy a narrowboat and leave our ‘normal’ jobs of Professional Photographer (Barry) and Midwife/Educator/Quality Coordinator (Sandra), has been to regularly review what we’re doing to attempt to sustain our chosen lifestyle. Up until very recently of course, I’ve also been caring for my elderly parents as their health diminished.
What we’re very conscious of is not getting sucked back into the hamster treadmill – or feeling coerced by ‘the powers that be’ into ‘ticking their boxes’.
Admittedly there’s been a few times such as the two applications for Barry’s UK Spousal Sponsored Visa (with the third one looming), or recently opening an ‘Executors Bank Account’ with my sister, or hiring a car from Enterprise (they ask about occupation this year having never done previously!), where not being able to simply answer questions about home address and employment, as most people easily do, can feel rather frustrating.
But … overall we feel an incredible sense of freedom ‘doing it differently‘ and NOT waiting to live until it’s potentially too late. We’ve known far too many people who have left this mortal world much sooner than expected. We both believe strongly this life is it. No point gambling precariously that there’s something ‘better’ to come in our worldview. As I’ve alluded to previously though, this way of living is not for the fainthearted. It takes courage, perseverance, partnership, persistence and planning (just not long-term or it’s just too freaky!).
Calendar Club – a joint venture
For the past two years we’ve both worked at Calendar Club outlets. In 2016 we each worked for people we knew who were running stores. Last year we successfully ran our own shop in Lichfield at the Three Spires Centre. A full-on fourteen week commitment, with only two days during in total when we shut up shop. We even managed to stay open during the period of severe snowfall.
Tumblr media
However, with both of us running the store we each had sufficient time off. We’d chosen Lichfield as there were good moorings nearby, with public transport routes to the city – and it’s near family and friends, as Sandra lived in Sutton Coldfield for many years. And from 1st November to 1st March, 48 hour moorings become 14 day ones. So we were able to move the required distances during the time we were ‘working’.
We’re very proud that this year, as we met the Key Performance Indicators set by Calendar Club, we’ve been invited to run the Lichfield store again. It’s a brilliant way to earn a good sum of money, on a commission basis (we’re ‘Self-Employed Operators’), in a set period of time. So it’s ideally suited to live-aboard boaters who’d prefer not to work in the usual way. There’s obviously many other people who live on land who run stores and mall outlets too.
This year Calendar Club have a number of vacancies needing to be filled from now till October.  You can apply by going to this link and filling in the online form. Currently the areas where Calendar Club are seeking motivated and committed operators are:
Aldershot
Andover
Aylesbury
Bath
Bishops Stortford
Buxton

Hemel Hempstead
Hereford
Hull
Inverness
Kendal
Kirkcaldy
Maidenhead

So get in quick if you’re interested!
There’s a number on the list with nearby waterways … Do contact us by email if you want to chat about our experiences.
The Home Brew Boat and Photography
Barry has focused mostly on on-line sales for The Home Brew Boat this year, doing very little towpath trading. We have three canal festivals booked in the Birmingham area in September. Most unlike the past four years.
He’s refining the products he sells, according to what he’s found popular. There may be more changes afoot in the near future, concentrating more along the distilling and spirits making line. That is more his area of expertise having been involved with ‘Still Spirits‘, the  distilling supply company whom Barry dealt with in New Zealand, prior to moving to the UK. So … if you want to know about distilling, the legalities of it and ‘how to do it safely and successfully for personal consumption only’, give him a call or email via the contact us page.
Last year Barry was invited to work with PayPal  together with an international freight company and which uses a website plugin to expand the reach of his business. It means his wicked website is translated into the language of the country where it is viewed so is able to have products delivered across the globe. The customer pays the UK plus extra international postage when ordering.  Barry organises the courier to the depot at Heathrow, and PayPal or their freight partner, do the rest. It’s been working very successfully so far.
He’s also increased the range of waterways related Greeting Cards to 47, with nine new ones in the last batch. Photography continues to be a passion – just in a very different way to his years in New Zealand.
The Worcester, Birmingham and Droitwich Canal Society have purchased some of his cards to sell at events they attend, and they say they’ve been one of their best-sellers! So … if there’s anyone else out there who would like to stock a selection of Barry’s cards, please do contact us.
He’s had photographs published recently in The Wall Street Journal and Waterways World, and we started a weekly Wednesday ‘Guess the location and waterway’ competition on his ‘Inspirational Images of the UK Inland Waterways’ Facebook page. The person to guess correctly wins their choice of Greeting Card from Barry’s range. Most week’s we’re a card down – occasionally we stump everyone! Click the link and ‘like’ the page, check it out on a Wednesday (the time we publish is variable) – and have a go yourself …
Reflections in Little Venice – published in The Wall Street Journal
A snow covered Areandare December 2017 Hopwas
Sandra’s becoming a Google Guru – at Ad-extra
Also this year, I (Sandra) applied, was interviewed, and successfully passed the required ‘Google Ads’ (formerly ‘Google AdWords’) exams, to gain a self-employed consultant contract with a fabulous UK-based company called ‘Ad-Extra‘. Over the past years I’ve blogged, set up and managed websites, and marketed our services through a variety of  Social Media accounts, so this seemed like a natural progression.
One of the beauties of doing online work like this, is the flexibility of the ‘hours of work’ – which can be mostly adapted around our lifestyle. It’s early days yet, but after working with the owner Dom, and the select team, since March 2018, I can honestly say I’m looking forwarding to building up my contribution to helping people promote themselves to clients searching for local businesses.
For any canal-related businesses, appearing at the top of Google searches may be something that would increase your exposure and income. Sandra Willis from The Doggie Boat, also works for Ad-Extra. Click here and ‘meet the team‘!
Duck food and Canal Art
These have been very small additions, so far, to our ‘portfolio’ of income generating streams.
We’ve been travelling a lot, and entertaining visitors frequently, so weekends sitting on a busy towpath attempting to ply our wares just hasn’t really figured on our itinerary! However, they’re both ‘works in progress’, and projects we’ll consider building upon during the remainder of this summer, early autumn, and in 2019.
  Letting go of Facepainting …
A few fantastic faces from Blisworth Canal Festival 2016
I loved being a facepainter since April 2014. It’s something I’d wanted to do for many years, and I believe (and was often told!) that I became rather good at it!
However …
I only ever got to facepaint OFF the boat. Which meant hauling heaps of equipment from the boat to a land-based stall and setting it up. Or hiring a car and travelling to events (that cut into the meagre profits!). And when people asked me if I did parties, generally I had to say yes and no, desperately wanting to say yes – but knowing it depended upon where we were expecting to be located at the time of the event. I’m convinced that if we’d been in one place, for a length of time, I could’ve built up the business successfully. As it is, with the lifestyle we’re currently living and loving, I felt it wasn’t moving forward. So I’ve made the sad decision to let it go – for now. Who knows, one day I may pick up my brushes, sponges, paints, glitter and gems again … Watching children’s (and young and more mature adults!) faces light up when they look in the mirror has been akin to waving a magic wand and sprinkling fairy dust on them. Absolutely priceless.
A kiwi summer
Our next kiwi guests arrive today, and are with us for three fabulous days. We’re currently moored adjacent to The Salt Barge, not far from Northwich. We’ve not stayed here previously, but will definitely do so again. A marvellous mooring and outstanding proper British pub.
On 25th July Barry’s older brother Ray arrives for three weeks. We recently heard his younger brother Peter has also chosen 2018 to pop in for a cuppa – or most likely something rather stronger! He’s literally popping in one day and out the next. But it’ll be amazing to see them both.
And yes, in between and during, we’ll both be fitting in ‘work’. Following that, September we have three festivals booked. October, it’ll be noses to the grindstone, and we’ll be focussing on making our Lichfield Calendar Club store as successful as possible.
We don’t always get the balance as evenly weighted to either side as we’d like, but mostly it suits us living as we are. For now …
Continuing to discover ways to sustain our flexible floating lifestyle It may seem to some readers we spend most of our time enjoying ourselves. Together, with family, and with friends.

All roads lead to Rome
12/05/2018: The day started the day with Jo going with Cecilia to post a couple of boxes back to Tamworth. All the excess stuff she had accumulated since arriving. The six or seven bags equated to a couple of hundred euro and plenty of paperwork. While this was going on Shane sorted out the rubbish so he and then boys only needed one trip to the street to get rid of it. With the final packing complete, Jo and Cec headed to the bakery to get some breakfast morsels, focaccia and coffee. Breakfast complete, we were sitting around waiting for old mate Manuel to return our three hundred euro deposit so we could go. He turned up at eleven so we were on the street at ten past looking for a couple of taxis. The side street gave us no luck, every taxi that went past was full. We moved to the end of the Piazza della Signoria for some better luck and didn't have to wait long before one dropped someone off at one of the apartments near the Gucci Museum. We grabbed that one & he phoned for another. Soon we were all at Santa Maria Novella Station and raring to go.
Tumblr media
Patiently waiting for Manuel to return our money
We had over an hour to kill so we dragged the bags down the footpath to outside Macdonald's for some burgers Royale. Not unexpectedly, the disappointment of eating their food rivalled home.  Platform 11 soon gave the notice that Frecciarossa 9419 would soon be pulling in. As expected, we were in carriage 2 and it was at the other end of the train so it was a decent walk down the platform before we could board. When we did, Tom & Beau managed to get all the heavy bags into one rack which would make disembarking easier. It wasn't long before we were cruising at nearly 250kph towards Rome.
Tumblr media
Frecciarossa 9419
Tumblr media
Comfort all of the way
The trip was effortless. One hour and thirty two minutes to do the two hundred and sixty odd kilometres between the two cities, including a stop on Rome's outskirts.  Once we arrived we were immediately met by a gentleman who escorted us to his Lancia people mover and dropped us off to the front steps of the apartment. Alfredo, our host, organised him for €75. From there Cecilia, Alfredo's sister and our other host, met us on the footpath and escorted us upstairs. The first thing Cecilia said upon meeting us was to apologise for forgetting the football tickets. The game was on tomorrow night and she had left them in her flat. She had a sick cat or something and had been distracted the last a few days. Tomorrow morning she would slide them under our door.
Tumblr media
Trying to fit all the bags in was the biggest dilemma of the day
The apartment was fantastic, two large bedrooms with large beds, one for Cecilia and one for us and a third bedroom with two single beds for the boys. Situated on the Equilinus, one of the seven hills of Rome, every room in the house, excellent. Cec's had a magnificent view of the Coliseum, only one hundred metres away.  Before leaving Cecilia gave us a brief history of the house starting with a picture of the Coliseum on the wall dated 1860. This picture had Constantine's Arch and our building in it but not much else. She mentioned that her grandparents had lived in the apartment since the fifties.
With a reassurance that our football tickets would be under the door the next morning, she left.
Tumblr media
View from the apartment
With Cecilia the Italian gone, but Cecilia the Aussie still around, we went out for a look around, starting of course with the Coliseum. We walked down to the bottom road, across in to the crowd within Piazza del Colosseo and towards Constantine's Arch and were immediately set upon by Bangladeshis and Africans. The Bangladeshis selling selfie sticks and backup phone batteries and the Africans just shaking your hand, offering an elephant or wristband and probably expecting something, the conversation didn't get too far but one asked Tom for some money for his children. Both the Africans and Bangladeshis sold water.
After a quick look around and discussion about what to do, we headed down via dei Fori Imperiali toward Trajan's Column where we would regroup and look for a feed.
Tumblr media
At least these guys were entertaining
Strolling through the crowd had us continually stopping to look at the historic ruins in amazement. The Forum Romanum on the left and then before the end, across the road to the statue of Augustus Caesar and then to the much later Trajan's Forum on the right. The information boards gave us a good understanding of what went on but by the time we got to Trajan's Column we were all parched and had had a gut full of the Bangladeshis and Africans. They were everywhere and relentless. To the point of us having to be rude and just ignoring them, particularly the African who wanted to shake everyone's hand, ask where you are from and then praise you and your country.
Tumblr media
Don't know who this dude is
Once we shook them off we headed up a small street lined with several options for lunch. We felt a little insecure as we walked up the narrow footpath of Quattro Novembre. Cars and buses continually passing at speed and within only a few feet. But that is Rome. Our first stop was Ristorante - Pizzeria da Titta & Caio, menu spread right across the front of the building. It looked okay but we may have been able to do better. The next joint, Bistrot Cibus Sandwich and Hamburger Bar just up the street was a bit ritzy so we back peddled to the first option, dining on pizzas, schnitzel, scampi and ravioli. One of our most disappointing meals yet.
Tumblr media
Tuck in Beau. It can only get better
After we paid, we headed back to the apartment but not before walking through a protest by Palestinians an against their good friends, Israel. The whole affair took up the time of heaps of police and soldiers and blocked off via dei Fori Imperiali to traffic. This allowed us to walk the rest of the way back without worrying about getting run over.
Tumblr media
A bit of rowdiness for the afternoon
Just before getting back Jo and Cec decided they were tired and needed a rest. Not before getting Shane to go and find the supermarket for some wine and supplies. Upon returning with the goodies it turned out that they both ended up at La Biga Ristoracaffé below the apartment for cocktails. Shane then joined them followed by Beau, all of the time bothered by the Bangladeshis and Africans pulling their stunts. One thing was handy though, one of them was selling roses, two for six euro. After checking the date in Australia he bought Jo and Cec a rose. After all, it was Mothers' Day back home. This would be the first of many visits there.  Tom was all plumb tuckered out and spent an early evening in bed.
Tumblr media
Happy Mother's Day
The rest of the night was spent arguing over Trivial Pursuit.
Tumblr media
First night in Rome
Tomorrow is free so who knows.
