WANDEE GOODDAY EPISODE 4
We're one third of the way through now, and in my opinion Wandee Goodday is continuing to stay one step ahead of fan expectations, feinting in one direction before swiftly jabbing toward another. The erstwhile romantic sex comedy has since left its PWOP (porn without plot) novel origins far, far behind and is now confidently punching above its weight class in the ring (yes, boxing metaphor to start things off in honor of the Phadetseuk gym π€£).
So WDGD Ep.4 was brought to us via the kind sponsorship of the emotion jealousy β we had Yak getting the baby green-eyes at Dee's antics around Ter, so unsubtly that even clumsy Dee could suss it out:
(above) Wandee Goodday Ep.4Β [1β/4] 10.25 β Dee asks Yak point-blank at the breakfast table "Are you jealous?"
But WDGD then sprang nimbly in a different direction, shifting its emotional center of gravity when Dee started feeling the pangs of jealousy around Yak's pre-existing crush on Taem (after getting hit on the head with Kwan and Ter):
(above) Wandee Goodday Ep.4Β [1β/4] 15.42 β In answering Yak as to whether Taem would have liked Yak's declaration of love on the balcony, we see that Dee β perhaps surprising himself here β was personally moved by it too (and also a little bit crushed to feel Yak's affections directed away from him, ostensibly toward Taem)
I really wasn't expecting this change of tack β like a lot of people I'd thought WDGD would make Yak's pining after Dee the main emotional trackway for the series, but now it looks like we have Yak aching over Dee and Ter, balanced out by Dee aching over Yak and Taem. These two! π
Given the complexity of emotions expected of him, Great doing a Mary MacGregor in Ep.4 was a fair bit shakier and less grounded compared to his heartfelt and clear-cut yearning for Dee in weeks past. In my opinion, Yak came across as a little too carefree and unaffected for someone who should have been struggling in the cross-currents between Dee and Taem.
Maybe that's just me. Or maybe Yak is just playing things out with Taem when his heart's true calling is for Dee, and getting Dee's help to woo Taem is all part of a bigger plan to win him over? π€
Anyway β surprise, surprise! WDGD then began showing us Ter feeling the stirrings of something rather like jealousy when he realized (like everyone else, except for the oblivious pair themselves) that YakDee was a thing:
(above) Wandee Goodday Ep.4Β [1β/4] 7.38 β Dee and Yak bump into Ter and Kwan on their way back from buying a Thai-Chinese breakfast
Ter has been painted as very much a self-serving individual, the devil incarnate possibly (and yes, the vast majority of us clocked the number of the beast as his apartment unit):
(above) Wandee Goodday Ep.4Β [1β/4] 9.36 β Ter outside his apartment number 666, contemplating the breakfast sandwich Kwan had given him
But looking at things again β Ter's apartment number really is just a sign placed on the wall of his apartment, and part of me is wondering if we're meant to read it as a metaphor for how we can sometimes have a label on the outside, that has very little to do with the real person residing within.
As an aside, I dug around some Thai websites to see if the triple six is all that ominous in Thailand β and the findings are mixed. There are plenty of Thai language articles that actually have to inform readers about the negative connotations of the number (suggesting that its bad reputation isn't quite as entrenched in Thailand, and its Biblical sense of menace is perhaps diluted). And there are more than a couple of sources attesting that it can also be viewed positively depending on the cultural framing β see these links here and here. π€·ββοΈ
WDGD also took pains to humanize Ter in showing us how happy he was at discovering Dee had left him a food gift in the past (remembering that food = love in Thai BL shorthand), and how much he seemed to miss it compared to Kwan's gift of a breakfast sandwich.
In case you didn't notice (I didn't either the first time around) Dee's food gift of congee with pa thong ko (ΰΈΰΈ²ΰΈΰΉΰΈΰΈΰΉΰΈΰΉ/Thai-style Chinese crullers/youtiao), that he hung on Ter's doorhandle at Ep.4Β [1β/4]Β 9.11, was actually the same breakfast food that Ter saw YY and Dee walking hand-in-hand back with to Dee's apartment.
This was a clear a signal as any, from Ter's point-of-view, that Dee's loving affections were now trained toward Yak instead β and you can knock me down with a feather if that isn't pain we're seeing on Ter's face at the realization of what he's lost.
So I'm not quite ready to paint Ter as the ΓΌber-villain just yet (though we may have to do so later, depending on where the narrative takes us). We're being shown a character who β at least in the beginning β was living more for himself, who's possibly closeted (remembering his Ep.1Β [3β/4]Β 3.26 "I like girls" comment) but also going through some sort of personal awakening even as YY's presence in Dee's life stirs up feelings he might not have known he had for the latter.
Here's to hoping Ter gets a better story arc out of this, but we'll see if WDGD really has the time or inclination to go there, or will take the lazy route and dish up Ter as nothing more than a flatly-painted, unvarnished villain (not an alien concept among the less ambitious BLs).
β
Now, I was originally going to post a bit more about WDGD's loftier thematic ambitions (there are some signs flashing, and they point to this BL having a social conscience) but I think I'll give the series more time to flesh things out to see what the final message is. But the following disparate elements coming together do seem to be telegraphing a message with an underlying, socially-driven impetus:
Director Golf's name doubling as the hospital's one;
The orthopedics and Dee's care for little Namphu;
The doctors and nurses;
The supporters on either side of the scholarship divide;
The found families.
I will probably write more on this later β unless WDGD decides not to follow through with it! But for now, I think at least part of what WDGD seems to be saying on a socio-political level is this β that those in positions of influence/authority also have a duty to serve the community under their charge.
This is the message (I think) behind Director Golf's cameo at the CafΓ© for All, in which they were both proprietor and/or manager as well as server to the customers, emphasizing how this duality of leadership and service can (and perhaps should) also go hand-in-hand:
(top) The Eclipse β Ep.4 [3β/4] 4.31; (bottom) Wandee Goodday Ep.2Β [3β/4] 7.28
It's a particularly pointed comment, given how many politicians have been accused of using their time in government to further their own interests rather than those of the people who put them there. (And especially since Director Golf has also spent time in politics, and may well have come up against this firsthand.) Of course it's not just in Thailand where these accusations are flung about β they also get tossed around in the broader Southeast Asian context and indeed in the rest of the world as well. But perhaps it's not entirely without reason that WDGD is messaging this, at this time (see these posts/articles linked here, here, here and here β you may need to read between the lines a bit π).
So putting their money where their mouth is, Director Golf ended Wandee Goodday Ep.4 with a pretty groundbreaking act of service β that PSA on the importance of HPV vaccination. π
And aligned with Director Golf's clarion call on inclusivity (that was sounded especially loudly during their time as a politician in Parliament), we're also shown that the would-be vaccination recipients include people who look like (to me at least) a non-binary individual, a gay couple, a straight couple and a lesbian couple: ππ
(above) Various people at the HPV Vaccination Center β Wandee Goodday Ep.4Β [4/4]Β 11.37
We've been spared the usual embarrassment of clunky product placements (much like The Eclipse was) that seems to plague many a GMMTV series, not that I'd really been bothered by it all that much (they're an intrinsic part of the BL cultural landscape at this point).
But Director Golf really seems to be saying: it's not just about the money anymore. BL does have influence in the wider sphere, and it should (and should be allowed to) wield that influence as a force for the public good as well. π€©
I may be reading too much into things again (like I've done before) but at the very least, Wandee Goodday imbued with a social conscience makes me feel even better watching this already feel-good vehicle! π

WANDEE GOODDAY EPISODE 3 β THE LEGENDARY AC GUY
In case you didn't know it, WDGD continues its naughty references (after last week's "fridge rimming" β see these links here and here about what "cleaning the fridge" means π€£) with the line above.
I had to be told this by either @grapejuicegay or @lurkingshan (and just how did you know this, guys? π) after it was referenced in Bad Buddy Ep.7, but yes The Legendary Air-Conditioning Technician (I'm Not Small), is a legendary Thai porno. (The title in English has various permutations, because β you know β Thai language.)
Because they've just had sex, here Dee is actually complimenting YY's performance beforehand by comparing him to another giant in the porn world (apparently).
This show! π€£

WANDEE GOODDAY EPISODE 2
WDGD Ep.2 was a pleasant enough watch, continuing the lightness of Ep.1 and laying the groundwork for the episodes to come.
It's too early to be sure in what direction they're going to be taking this series, so I'm not looking too closely at things just yet.
And I've never gotten a sense that Director Golf has quite the same penchant for intellectual gamery that other directors (like Khun Aof Noppharnach) have, so WDGD might turn out to be not much more than a straight-up recounting of a romance (and that would be fine too). Nonetheless we are getting glimpses (little sparks really) of details tucked in here and there that suggest the series may yet narrate other messages on a deeper level in future episodes.
Director Golf is known for their political awareness (having spent time as the first trans politician in the Thai Parliament's House of Representatives), and this leaning was abjectly manifest when they directed The Eclipse. I'm not seeing the same heavy-handedness in WDGD though (and I think that's a good thing).
Part of me is wondering if the highly unusual method of determining who gets the orthopedic scholarship (patients and staff will get to vote on this, really? π) will re-surface later as a comment on the Thai political situation (always a rollicking ride). No guarantees, but odds are pretty good on this one.
Just a reminder that Khun Golf was ejected from Parliament through the application of a controversial law (banning lawmakers from having shares in any media companies), the same one I think that was also used to help obstruct Pita Limjaroenrat from becoming PM even though his Move Forward Party won the most votes in last year's election (it's also Khun Golf's political party). So any time the democratic electoral process gets referenced in a Thai BL (see this example linked here), the chances are high that the canvas is being primed for a political painting of some sort.
Anyway, just some light-hearted observations for now:
The novel that WDGD the series is based on is (by most accounts) quite trashy and throwaway, but you wouldn't know it watching Episodes 1 and 2 so far. The set-up out the starting gate was so squarely and comically blue-collar v. white collar, brawn v. brains, half-naked sweaty men v. lavender-scrubsuited physicians that I wasn't expecting to get much more than a shallow good time with a lot of tittering at man tits and macho tushies. But they've elevated the source material, imbuing it with a gentle sentimentality and treating the sexual element with humor and good sense (e.g., the condom and lube talk in Ep.1, and the discussion between YY and Dee establishing the ground rules for their Friends with Benefits arrangement). Quite impressively done, especially considering the lightness of its touch.
(above) Wandee Goodday Ep.2 [4/4] 6.28 β YY and Dee discuss the ground rules for their Friends With Benefits arrangement, against the backdrop of a neon sign that loudly proclaims "Less Expectations More Satisfaction" (which is, of course, the most basic ground rule for any FWB liaison)
β
About that sentimentality: WDGD's glowing emotional core continues to take the unlikely form of Yoryak, and Great seals the deal with his performance in Wandee Goodday's quieter moments.
(above) Wandee Goodday Ep.2Β [3β/4] 2.23 and the return of the wet towel trope β Yoryak and the neon sign above the bed demonstrate together how love in action speaks louder than words
The tough kickboxer has fallen hard for Dee, and you can really read the tender pining behind his muay thai bravado. (I think he does lovelorn yearning better than outright lust though.)
(above) Wandee Goodday Ep.2Β [3β/4] 3.53 β Yoryak plants a little sniff-kiss as he embraces a barely-conscious Dee in bed; he's fully-clothed, yet far more naked and vulnerable than when they were actually having full-on sex before
There's surely going to be emotional devastation in store for Yak because a Friends With Benefits arrangement soon becomes a wrecking ball to the heart if you're unlucky enough to have caught feelings. And things can only get worse for our dear boy once he and Dee enter into their fake dating phase. Can you imagine coping with all that physical intimacy and also having to display emotional intimacy in public, but then being forced to deny it in private where you want it the most? Only pain looms on the foreseeable horizon for our macho fighter (su su na!), but it should make for some mightily delicious and pleasurably guilty viewing as he journeys through it all (if only for the payoff at the end; Golf please don't fail us! π¬).
β
There have been cameos and callbacks galore in just these two episodes. The hospital is named Tanwarin, which is also Director Golf's formal first name and this may mean they've cast themselves in the role of a healer here, with this series.
There are also the clips of The Eclipse that our boys watch onscreen (possibly foreshadowing some more political commentary to come).
And screenwriter Yokee Apirak Chaipanha (who also did The Eclipse with Director Golf) guests as Dr. Apichart, the head of the Orthopedic Department.
Of course Ep.2's CafΓ© for All is also a callback to The Eclipse (it was prominently featured in there as well, with Director Golf in a cameo as the black-and-white clad proprietor/server).
(top) The Eclipse β Ep.4 [3β/4] 4.31; (bottom) WDGD Ep.2Β [3β/4] 7.28
And my read then was that The Eclipse, just like the cafΓ© with Khun Golf at the helm, was meant as a welcoming, non-judgemental space for reflection on LGBTQ+ issues. Possibly the same is being said for WDGD here, though its general unseriousness doesn't seem quite the same or even an appropriate forum for any discussion of weight. Perhaps like in the second appearance of CafΓ© for All, what's being served up here in WDGD seems to be less heavy drama and more fluffy confection. Not that there's anything wrong with that! π°π
β
Another possible cameo that's caught my eye β the oft-referenced, once heard but never seen Dr. Nop.
(above) Wandee Goodday Ep.2Β [2/4] 0.50 β Yoryak looks disappointed when the nurses tell him they've switched his physician from Wandee back to Dr. Nop (while his t-shirt proclaims "Heart Melt")
I can't help thinking that this is a reference to Aof Noppharnach Chaiyahwimhon, who's on hiatus from GMMTV directorial duties for the time being. He's cameo'd as a Nop before (see these write-ups linked here and here) and this may be a reference to his being unseen, but still acknowledged and not unheard during his present time off (I've written about possible reasons for his time away, in this write-up linked here).
β
Others have pointed out before I could do it, but yes cleaning the refrigerator does refer to rimming in Thai slang. π
(above) Wandee Goodday Ep.2Β [4/4] 9.33 β YY turns up at Dee's unit 609 (possibly a reference to 609 Bedtime Story, that was also created by Director Golf and screenwriter Yokee Apirak) appropriately togged out with a gas mask, goggles and bodysuit, all ready to give Wandee's "fridge" a thorough scrub and rub
This thread on the Pantip forum (linked here) explains the term. And the same thread also explains that washing the dishes can mean either sloppy seconds or oral, which lends weight to Li Ming's laang jaan comeback to Jim as payback for infantilizing him during the market scene in Moonlight Chicken:
β
OK, so I didn't find anything truly earth-shaking about WDGD Ep.2, but that's typically the case for second and third episodes in any series while they set things up for plot developments to come.
Still, Wandee Goodday is already glowing with a comforting warmth, peppered with light comedic turns even as it foreshadows darker shifts in the future. I hope they build on the solid foundations of Episodes 1 and 2, and serve up the remaining ten episodes ripened to their fullest potential (because there's lots in there they can play with). Here's to hoping! π₯°

WANDEE GOODDAY EP.1
This was an excellent first episode... light, sweet, romantic, just enough sexy but not so much as to overshadow the romantic vibes burbling beneath the surface.
We're getting enemies to lovers, kind of, and they make it work. Almost a laugh a minute, descending into slapstick every now and then, but they got the balance right and nothing ever got too much.
Editing was rapid-fire and punchy (haha, appropriate) and it felt like a brisk jog throughout.
But then something turned... and it's not often when this happens, but you could identify the exact moment when WDGD dropped its over-the-top theatrics to reveal the tender heart beating within. And it's this moment right here:
I wasn't expecting it so soon, and I sure as hell wasn't expecting Great to deliver the pivot point β but he nailed it with his usual understated delivery, going from frustrated exasperation to the briefest flash of sensitivity that blustery boxer Yak must have been hiding under his tough guy exterior. In recognizing Dee's vulnerability he showed us his own, and it was so good.
Definitely one to watch! π

Note
Yokee apparently confirmed Wandee Goodday for May, I think it will get the Saturday slot after the rerun of Dirty Laundry has aired This is one of the shows from part 1 that I was actually hyped about so I can't wait.
yes!! Saturday would make sense though the Dirty Laundry rerun ends in 3 weeks so maybe they'll continue with Midnight Motel or something before WDGD. The show is not under my top5 for this year but I'm still excited to see what they deliver. AllThis has had some ups and downs with their shows so fingers crossed this will be of the same caliber as The Eclipse π€π»
