you must be swift as the coursing river, with all the force of a great typhoon  —  descendants ocs & headcanons ; mulan.
a rundown of mulan and its role in auradon & the massive descendants project. trigger warnings for death by childbirth & child abuse.
when the different disney worlds all became connected, the emperor was still in charge at the time, though it wouldn’t be long before ting-ting took the throne. he was against the isle, as was the rest of his family, who believed that shan yu, along with the rest of the deceased villains, should stay dead. he, of course, wasn’t listened to. ting-ting succeeded him soon after.
the anti-magic law as well as the legislation that had ‘significant animals’ living as humans affected both mushu and cri-kee, especially the former. mushu was given the option of either disappearing into the spirit world or staying with mulan without using any of his spirit abilities. he chose the latter and lived in a human form with mulan and shang. cri-kee joined them.
mulan and shang are still high-ranked members of the army and are seen as the faces of it, though they thankfully haven’t had to fight any real battles for many years now. they often oversee training and take on leadership roles which sometimes has them away from home for extended periods of time. during these times, if both of them are away, mulan’s parents usually look after the kids.
china and agrabah are next to each other on the large map of auradon, and as such, the families of both kingdoms became close. jasmine, mulan, and the princesses were able to bond over not doing what was expected of them and often meet up. this is why it’s easy for them to fall into an alliance that works well for them. merida is also someone they get along with, but as she lives further away, it’s harder to meet her.
jianyu is the older brother of lanying, or lonnie, as she’s most often referred to as. he’s much like his sister in that he’s athletic and clearly the child of two famous soldiers in the way he’s been trained, but he’s also very outgoing and friendly to all who meet him regardless of their background. he has a bit of a romanticized perspective of the army, having grown up with his parents being celebrated as war heroes, and so he plans to follow in their footsteps. mulan and shang have told him before that he should be prepared, but he hasn’t heeded their warnings so far. he has a high sense of justice and is always willing to help out.
unlike her older brother, lonnie isn’t as interested in the army. she respects them, especially since she grew up around the soldiers, but she doesn’t see it as the path for her. she sees her calling in sports instead. she sees that sports originating from some of the more traditional kingdoms still have some bias against women and she plans on changing that. if there is anything she’s learned from her mother and her story, it’s that women can do anything.
bowen’s existence is one that the more anti-magic leaning people aren’t entirely happy about. they were under the impression that mushu had given up anything and everything that made him magic, that he was living in his human form all the time now, so why was his toddler struggling to keep themself from breathing fire? mushu was very quick to remind them that being a magical spirit is in his genetics and that it would obviously pass down to his child. the complainers didn’t like it, but they had to retreat, knowing he has a point.
while bowen is outgoing and upbeat, always with a smile on their face, a lot of this is just a mask. they haven’t forgotten what happened in their childhood, having been too young to fight back but old enough to understand, and they tend to make themselves fit in without using their magic, but this is exhausting. they want everyone to like them, but it’s at the cost of not being themself.
meilin, just like her father, is referred to as a lucky cricket. she always says she isn’t lucky, but that she just works hard. she gets good grades, places in all competitions she’s in, and is well-mannered, at least in front of the parents. she can, however, be a bit pushy when trying to help others, which she does often. she doesn’t only give advice, she also ensures the other person takes it. it can be a bit much sometimes. also like her father, she doesn’t speak, and uses sign language to communicate. she wants to travel one day. despite being a human now, she still considers herself a cricket as she can shapeshift into one, and she often makes wooden houses for bugs and the like to live in peace.
quiyue is the eldest of all of the friends and it shows in the way she holds herself -- dignified, refined, and preparing to lead a country one day. she is the type of princess who always keeps a neutral face as to not betray her feelings to her subjects, just in case it makes her too vulnerable. she usually only smiles in the presence of her friends, and even then, it’s a small one. she feels as though she has to be seen as an unmoving pillar in order to instill confidence in her subjects, which is not the case.
as she is not the heir to the throne, xiulan rarely takes her royal responsibilities seriously. she would rather practice her sword-fighting with lonnie or go exploring with meilin. she considers mulan her biggest inspiration and aims to be just like her. ting-ting doesn’t mind the ‘less royal’ activities, knowing that it’s important to have the children enjoy their interests, but she wishes it would stop making xiulan so late to important events. she marches to the beat of her own drum, sometimes to a concerning extent. she also has a love of music, more as a hobby than anything else, and loves to play the flute in particular.
feng is the most reserved of the huang kids, taking more after his mother than his father in that regard. rather than using his physical strength like his father, he’s someone who uses his brain more than his brawn. he’s trained in combat to an extent just as his cousins are, but he would rather read and write than play sport. he has a specific interest in books and has a large collection that he keeps at home. when visiting the imperial palace, you’ll likely find him in the library. he can be particularly blunt, especially if people are disturbing his reading/work.
jingyi is the youngest cousin as well as the sweetest. she’s a lot like her mother, cheerful and energetic, but also childish at times. she loves to spend time with her family and in particular loves exploring with xiulan, though it comes with the risk of getting lost as she has a terrible sense of direction. she daydreams quite a bit, walking into walls and trees. the only time when she doesn’t let things distract her is when she’s cooking, which she has a talent for after learning from her parents since her childhood.
qiuyue is in the study club, on the archery team, debate team, and equestrian team as well as the fencing team with jianyu and lonnie. jianyu is also on the tourney team. jingyi is a cheerleader and part of the home economics club. xiulan and meilin are both on the gymnastics team. xiulan is also part of the music club while meilin is on the swim team and in the metal & woodwork club. feng is in the literature club.
jianyu is an excellent leader when it comes to sports and, if ben can’t make it to tourney practice, he usually steps in and takes over for the session.
outside of each other, they have plenty of friends. bowen in particular gets along with other students who have magic but are forced to suppress it, such as eira andersen, novae lux, and the daivari twins. meilin is also especially friendly with the swim team, and her best friend outside of xiulan would be tyler ramirez. she and atticus darling also share their love of traveling and adventure.
qiuyue eyes every kingdom with a critical eye, even her own, which sometimes has other members of royalty angry at her. she and chad don’t get along at all, for example, but she’s friends with his sister cynthia. she is also friends with lisian white, eirlys llyr, and olathe nedakh.
over on the isle of the lost, shan yu was resurrected and imprisoned there along with all of the other villains. his hun army were imprisoned alongside him and, as it stands, he has the largest amount of troops on the isle. in the isle’s early days, they came to blows with rourke’s mercenaries, but with the latter no longer completely supporting rourke and no longer having a leader to rally behind, they were thoroughly defeated. the hun army took over the land they were staying in and expanded, the hun camp taking up a decent amount of ground in a hillside area a ten minute walk from town.
zihan & zixuan are twins conceived and born on the isle, but as their mother’s body wasn’t prepared for the birth of two children, she passed away shortly after their birth, though not before naming them. their surname ‘fang’ is their mother’s surname instead of their father’s.
the twins were raised to be the greatest warriors the isle had ever seen, but they were pushed to and beyond their limits. shan yu was determined to make them the best, and that required tough training. he sees his sons as tools, and tools are made to be used. they have the wounds and scars to show for it, most of them inflicted by their father.
as they grew up, it became clear that the twins were very different people. zihan is full of anger at the situation they are in and takes it out on inanimate objects most of the time, though he isn’t above snapping at people who cross him on a bad day. he’s always ready for a spar or fight if someone requests it and he keeps his sword on his person at all times. he tries to get a rise out of zixuan a lot and fails every time, so it sometimes looks like he hates his younger twin, but the opposite is true. he’s actually quite protective of zixuan in secret, though zixuan can take care of himself.
zixuan can clash his sword against the best of them, but he prefers not to. he’s more of a pacifist, much to his father’s annoyance, and would rather solve problems via talking rather than fighting. that isn’t always possible on the isle, of course, so he knows how to hold his own. it is incredibly rare for him to lose his temper, perfectly balanced, focused, and disciplined. from a young age he has had an interest in plants despite them being difficult to grow on the isle, but he managed it with help from the older huns. he sells tea leaves and the like to others, but he’s also charitable and will invite someone in for a cup of tea for free if he feels they need it.
the twins attend serpent prep. zihan makes it his mission to fight the gaston twins and their cronies as much as possible while zixuan has quite a few friends due to his kind nature.
zihan will practice sword-fighting with uma’s crew sometimes. he isn’t part of their crew, but he has a respect for them and always has fun sparring with them.
while the twins don’t have any other siblings (that they’re aware of, you never quite know on the isle), zixuan has taken in tansy bellwether as a sort of pseudo-sibling, aware that she isn’t very well-liked and makes herself a target. it took a while for her to open up to him, and zihan was annoyed at first, but now the three of them are usually together.
when ben invite the four over to auradon, the lis and huangs are cautious, but also relieved that none of the children are shan yu’s. they are under the impression that the four are some of the only children there, not imagining that shan yu has children in the first place, unaware of what really happens on the isle. jianyu is accepting but initially cautious, feeling better about it after lonnie becomes friends with them. he also ends up respecting jay a great deal. bowen is a little freaked out and avoids them while meilin doesn’t have much of an opinion herself. the huangs all have varying reactions, from keeping an eye on them from a distance (qiuyue), leaving them be (xiulan & feng), and actively waving to them in the corridors (jingyi).
zihan is angry at not being chosen and had to go take it out on a few trees before calming down with some of zixuan’s tea, ranting that they should all be allowed off the isle considering the conditions. zixuan is more understanding of ben’s position and is willing to wait for developments.
