LGBTHC? Targeted Marijuana marketing
When liberal politics tie together LGBTQ rights and the legalization of marijuana, we assume that the two issues work together. Yet the corporate marijuana industry (along with other industries) also use our community to their advantage with targeted marketing practices.
In an article from the Denver Posts, corporate employees who advertise for companies like Marriott, JC Penney, and others discuss “seeing the gay audience as ripe for business.” The quotes include discusses the LGBTQ community in terms of “buying power,” with Marriott executives pleased with positive statements from President Obama on gay marriage since it coincided with their advertising campaign. Upon first glance more advertising campaigns featuring clear representations of gay relationships may seem positive, providing more visibility and perhaps changing the attitudes of those viewing the advertisements. Yet, it comes down to what these executives view the queer community as: a vibrant, diverse community of individuals who thrive from a shared understanding of their non-normative experience, or as dollar signs, another group to market to and profit off of.
Quotes from a marketing agency working for Marriott make it clear that those using our community as a marketing ploy do not fully understand the struggles that each LGBT person lives daily. The agency states, “I call it the PFLAG effect…when you advertise to gay people you reach their brothers, sisters, cousins…” What of the many gay people whose brothers, sisters, and cousins are not aware that their relative is gay because it has not been safe for the individual to come out? With this statement, corporations reveal a lack of understanding for the families that queer people create for themselves.
Since the legalization of marijuana in certain states and the corporatization of the product, glimpses of the same sort of marketing appear. In Seattle, 2016 Pride was sponsored in part by corporate pot shop Uncle Ike’s. The advertising for pride included lines such as “Time for some LGBTHC!!!” or, “Ike…is selling weed and supporting good causes…like our LGBTQIA friends!!!” The tying together of the celebratory Pride with marijuana sales almost makes it seem as though the two are equated, both supported by a liberal agenda. Yet queer folks should know that perhaps this targeted marketing is not to their benefit, but a corporate tactic used to sell a product, even one as controversial as weed.
I am not implying that using marijuana should be avoided, or that the political agendas at hand cannot encompass both the legalization of marijuana and the push for LGBT rights. Instead I suggest a wariness of advertising marketed solely towards our community. Advertising for the sole sake of profiting from LGBT communities is not equality, but further wrongdoing. Consuming with awareness is critical for marijuana or any product that uses targeted advertising.
