Ah, it's hard to pick a favorite! Here are a few that I really enjoyed:

Gallery AU (Keith and Shiro from VLD fanfic) by @trytofocus - Keith is a prisoner in a secret, highly prestigious gallery where subjects are displayed in all manners of artful bondage for the entertainment of rich patrons. Shiro is one such patron. And he isn't nice. (Be warned that this fic is 18+, as it contains adult elements and themes, and is NSFW) Why I love it: God, the mental images are SO GOOD. The way that Keith is treated as a living, breathing, unwilling art piece... the emotions, the way things are described, the care and reverence taken in tying him up and putting him on display, the way that Shiro appreciates him, the attitude that Keith gives... It's so freaking good, and it gives me crazy whumperflies. I wish there was more!

Death Valley (also on AO3) by @ashintheairlikesnow - In 2003, Finn Schneider left Germany for a month-long planned trip around the United States. Somewhere around Death Valley, he disappeared. But he wasn't alone. (Be warned that this fic is 18+, as it contains noncon, murder, and is NSFW) Why I love it: This was the second whump fic that I ever read, and it was integral in getting me into the whumpsphere! I feel SO SO SO bad for Finn, what he goes through, and how he is in his future. It's one of those stories that makes me go "OH NO BB LET ME FIX IT FOR YOU ;A;" but this poor guy has seen and been through far too much. It's brutal. Even the flash forward has me on the edge of my seat and only wanting the best for him. I hope this poor man finds love, joy, and peace.

Brother's Keeper by @darkthingshappen - Ben Adkins' life changes forever when his brother Jake fails to pay what is owed to some powerful men. Will he be able to survive his harrowing experience and return to his family? (Be warned that this fic is 18+, as it contains explicit noncon and is NSFW) Why I love it: Phew, this one is intense! It's one of those fics that made me go "OH DAMN." a lot. I actually had to read this one out of order a bit because (spoilers) thereʻs a recovery arc... followed by a recapture arc. I had to save some of the recovery arc to read when things got too tough and I needed some joy for the characters, because GEEZ. Poor Ben!! Poor Jake! Poor Andrei! Volkov and his guys are sick SOBs and just merciless. Itʻs so whumpy. I had to skip a chapter or two due to some of my own personal squicks, but other than that, if youʻre looking for some guys having a super bad time, this is a great fic for that!

King of The Road by @darkthingshappen - George and Danny find themselves in the hands of a very sick and twisted trucker. What will happen to them as his newest victims? (Be warned that this is fic 18+, as it contains explicit noncon and is NSFW) Why I love it: The trucker is horrible!! An absolutely evil vile terrible sick guy!!! I have to know what happens to George and Danny! Thereʻs not much of the fic yet, but Iʻm frothing at the mouth waiting for more. The brutality is so whumperiffic, and I already desperately want to save them, so you know things are on a good track!

Secrecy by @doomeddestination - A young spy is captured by a mysterious man known only as Shepard. (Be warned that this fic is 18+, as it contains explicit noncon and is NSFW) Why I love it: Calico is such a great writer, and her dedication to her stories and characters is INSANE. This story was the first one of hers that I read, and it introduced me to Ander, who is another character that I simply wish to wrap in a blanket and give tea to and take care of forever. This poor guy just needs a break. Shepard is awful, and the suspense in the story is so great. Thereʻs a whole multitude of AUs and stories that contain these characters as well, so lots of stuff to check out! ... ... ... If Ander never gets to canonically see his mom again, I will riot in the streets. LET A GOOD THING HAPPEN TO HIM.

The Mountain Man by @darkthingshappen - A kidnapper has his sights on a hockey player and sets a plan into motion to get him into his clutches. Why I love it: Getting into the head of the whumper as he stalked and planed his capture was so cool. I loved the confusion and delirium that the hockey player showed, especially when things started to get scary. I think this story was meant to be a one-shot, but Iʻd gladly dig into more of it if it got continued!

Hazel's story by @starrywhump - A group of college students is kidnapped by a sadistic whumper who has no qualms about torturing them. Why I love it: This was the FIRST whump fic I ever found and read! I wouldnʻt be in the community now if not for this fic. I have no idea how I stumbled across it, but Iʻm so glad I did, because it introduced me to whump lingo, whump blogs, and this whole crazy world. I love the characters, the whumper is creepy and intimate, and some of what she does is just nasty and brutal. I donʻt know what happened to the author (the blog hasnʻt been updated in like three years), but I hope that theyʻre happy and doing well wherever they are. I love the fic, and would love to read more if they ever decided to continue!

There are so so so many other great fics out there, but these are just the few that come to mind off the top of my head! Any other fans of these stories out there? :O

I love your blog and all your stories, but the way you craft tension is so inspiring and I love how you pack a punch like you’re stealing our breath when we read, like everything you write I get whumperflies from!!!!

Oh gosh you’re so sweet lemme stop my head from spinning

Alright soooooo-

I have a writing degree and was running short story competitions in high school. I read a lot and love analyzing plot structure. I also have a theatre degree and spent a lottttt of time in plays writing and directing classes learning about rising and falling action, tension, and unity.

Those things aren’t necessary for you to be a great writer but it really helps you understand why certain things just work and others don’t. I’m able to lazy write scenes that I don’t care about by carving a structure that I know will be intense to follow, then plugging in the elements I want. It’s like build a bear. You didn’t really *make* any of the clothes or stuffing or the body of the bear, but you chose what elements already existing would look good together based on your style and what you’ve liked in the world around you.

So yeah, for structure in general, I’d highly recommend looking into story analysis in any form. Books like Attack of the Copula Spiders, Bird by Bird, or On Writing help SO much in understanding those elements and how to use them.

On a “wow that sentence was amazing-!” level-

Reading a lot is helpful. Expand your vocabulary. Poetry is very good. Read Edgar Allen Poe and *really* pay attention to the crunchy adjectives he uses. Pay attention to the connotations of each word and play around with it. Instead of driving home a negative thing with a word that has negative connotations every time, know when to pair good and bad. Phrases like ‘exquisite agony’ stand out in a paragraph and keep the story fresh line by line. Plus it just sounds lovely.

Further, pay attention to pacing. Rather than just describing what’s happening, really get in a single characters head. Blind us to the others’ perspectives and thoughts, and focus on the one. That gap in information is very intriguing, but more importantly it lets you write the scene moment by moment. During intense things, I LOVE dragging it out. I like to do one to two seconds of reading time for every real life second that that action would take up. Really get in there with the descriptions and see what xyz is doing to your character, not what they feel.

That sounds a bit confusing. I mean to make it in active voice, I suppose. Instead of “she felt the ripping agony of the blade”, try out “the blade ripped agony through her”

It’s more dynamic and the phrasing itself make her helpless by making her the indirect object rather than the subject noun. Let objects be the subject of the sentence, by the way. It’s lovely and you’re absolutely allowed to do that. Personify the crap outta those props.

I hope this helps!? I’m still in a lot of pain and I don’t think my thoughts are perfectly straight so feel free to ask for clarification or examples!

I need opposites. I need contrasts and juxtaposition. I need a powerful character brought to their knees, or a meek character revealing something inside more intense than those around them ever even dreamed. I need restraint for the uncontrollable and release for the restrained.

I want other characters to see the contrasts. I want them to look on in any number of emotions as a character, from whom they have never expected strength, endures something that would break the observer. I want them to watch a character who has been their definition of strength and protection be brought down despite giving it everything they had.

I want change and a permanent disruption to the status quo. I want relationships to evolve with new knowledge.

This is the true value of whump for me. The things that give me all the whumperflies. 🥰

74. Discipline

“I don’t enjoy hurting you, you know.”

He said, calmly unbuckling the dark blue leather collar.

“Yes, Master.” The pet replied. “Discipline is a necessary and humane event ensuring the continued obedience and wellbeing of a pet.” Despite the dire situation, Coriander felt a small spark of pride at its ability to keep its voice steady. An obedient pet, at least, if not a particularly clever one.

“You have to learn.” Harold said, as he laid the other collar around the pet’s neck. “You mustn’t lose our medications like that, it could be dangerous.”

After the weeks and months with only the soft, blue leather around its neck, the pet had almost forgot the feeling of the unforgiving synthetic material. As Harold snapped the heavy-duty plastic buckle closed, the pet felt its throat constrict together with it.

With the scratchy fabric came the fear, making the pet’s heartbeat race. It had to force itself to take long, slow breaths, to keep its hands open on its knees instead of curled into fists at its side.

“I’m going to shock you three times.” Harold warned. “I think that is a fair punishment, don’t you?”

“Yes Master.” Coriander replied, trying to keep the panic out of its voice.

Three times. One time, maybe two times, it could stand, but three… Would it be able to keep its composure? To take its punishment with dignity like a well-behaved pet rather than crying and pleading? How long would Master shock it? Would it fall unconscious? Perhaps even soil itself?

This is what bad pets deserve, Coriander told itself sternly. Your lack of attention could have hurt your masters.

Without a word of warning, Harold pressed the button. Every muscle in the pet’s body seized. Intense, fiery pain raged along every nerve. It couldn’t breathe. Time felt frozen as it toppled over, hitting the side of its head against the wooden floor.

After it finally stopped, the pet had hardly time to take a breath before the second shock came.

It wanted to beg for mercy, but before it could open its mouth, Harold shocked it again. As if the pet’s Master also wanted to have it over with.

“Stop, Harold, stop!” Mistress Edna hurried into the room. “I found your pills. They were in the drawer with your tobacco, and you know that Coriander never goes in there. You must have misplaced them yourself!”

Gasping for breath on the floor, the blonde pet saw its Master’s eyes widen in dismay.

“I - I forgot? How is it even possible? But…. but I must have.” He looked down at his pet, contrition in his eyes. “Coriander, I’m so sorry. Let me get that off you.”

Even that night, as the pet was kneeling next to its Mistress’ rocking chair, helping her winding up some yarn for her knitting, it could feel the aftershocks running through its body, making its hands tremble.

Like a memory of pain.

Tom Hiddleston's acting!! If he doesn't get an award for his acting, I'm going to be very, very upset. The screams, the urgency and fear! I really felt for him the the entire time.

And the time skipping gave me so many whumperflies

As always, the exchanges between Loki and Mobius were top-tier. The skin conversation and their care for one another were *chefs kiss*

I love OB so much! He adds a deadpan delivery that is absolutely hilarious. It definitely adds comic relief to the intensity of season 2.

For Whump Caretakers

In case any fellow Caretaker needs to heart this today: you don't have to be 100% secretive about your interests in whump, or exclude whump from your real life relationships.

If you're one of those who want to do this in real life, there are real people out there who want to be taken care of, comforted, and held through moments of vulnerability. Yes, to the point of it being more than just ordinary romantic behavior. Look around the whump community. There are tons of people who identify with whumpees and many who want relationships that are wildly affectionate in real life. People want friends and community members who are that caring as well. It's not "too much." It's not "creepy" or any of the things that we may call ourselves. Not if the people on the receiving end want the same thing. A relationship is what you make it, and some people want to make it about helping each other through the worst possible moments, at the fringes of human experience. There's nothing wrong with that.

When you get whumperflies about a real person who you love, it doesn't mean you're a bad person or that you're exploiting their pain. There are people out there who get that feeling about their own pain, and want someone to feel it with them.

So don't settle for just hiding your desires and living them out solely through escapism. Don't settle for a partner who shames you. Your form of caring may be more intense than normal, and it may take time to find someone who feels the same way, but it is beautiful.

oh fuck, i haven’t thought about this in a while… 😍😍😍

i have often daydreamed to ���can you feel my heart?” by bring me the horizon, it’s very angsty and intense and the beat is very screamy 😍🥺 also, of course, “once” by brad caleb kane, is a classic whump song to me and to others! i personally adore “st. lawrence river” by david usher and it feels so deeply angst-ridden to imagine scenarios to. 😭 oh also, of course, “bones bad bones” by asbjørn and also “the river, the woods” by astronautilus 😍

a lot of evanescence songs feel so whumpy to me?? particularly stuff like “snow white queen”. also, the band within temptation has several sad and dramatic songs that i would imagine Scenarios to, “angels” being especially memorable (not to mention the music video is pure whump holy shit). the band red is very whumpy to me also, especially their early stuff? 💖

a lot of these choices are very nostalgic for me but they still give me lots of whumperflies and i think they deserve checking out!!😈😈😈🥺🥺🥺

I always find this question hard to answer, which seems weird, right? Like, what do I like? 🤔 Seems like I should know that one. But I guess it was a matter of never having sat down to try to define it, because I am very pleased with what I came up with thinking about it.

#1: The Walkthrough

The absolute gratification of That Chapter where Whumpee is taken back to the scene of their torture or imprisonment, with Caretakers or Authorities, and explains what they went through. Caretakers are pissed and distraught, Authorities are horrified. Ideally there's an expert among the witnesses who can shed even more light on it, so that Whumpee learns things they didn't even realise or understands motivations that didn't make sense to them at the time.

A decent replacement for this is an intense interrogation or Whumpee being given truth serum or having their mind read to reveal those details, but the walkthrough is best.

#2: Impalement / picquerism / foreign objects implanted

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I think it's just the body horror and invasiveness taking away Whumpee's bodily autonomy, making them realise how helpless they are. Plus the brutality. Yeah, it tells Whumpee things are serious and Whumper has no limits. That part's good.

#3: Revenge

Revenge. That's always good. When it's Whumper's motivation -- maybe Whumpee does deserve something but Whumper is going way too far, maybe Whumper is just delusional, maybe Whumpee is a relative innocent who is being used by Whumper against a third party -- revenge is good.

But just as good -- maybe even better? -- is when it's revenge on Whumper. Whumpee getting to confront Whumper is good, but the best of all, maybe, is when a Caretaker who isn't actually a good person gets revenge in a way that Whumpee-who-is-a-better-person can't. Two of my favourite scenes I've ever written involve Lucius Malfoy being absolutely, delightfully vicious to people who have hurt Draco or Narcissa. Mmmmyes.

what do you like about whump?

I love that fantastic feeling of excitement and joy that happens when I watch a whumpy scene. It's not always whumperflies (though it commonly is), but it's that great feeling you get when you're wonderfully surprised and satisfied by something, like your favorite actor suddenly appearing in a movie or finding out the ice cream is ridiculously on sale and buying 5 cartons or when the action scene is perfectly choreographed to the background music. I don't know, it's hard to describe because it's not super comparable to a lot of things, and how intensely it feels can vary a lot depending on the scene. But that's what I love about whump :)

What was your whump awakening? Like when you really realized “ohhhhh. I like this.”

Oh boy oh boy. I don’t know that there was ever a specific moment, but a lot of things that started when I was very young. This is very long rip

I was intensely fascinated with torture scenes and concepts - you get exposed to a shocking amount of that even as a kid, bc gore is fine as long as there isn’t a hint of normal human sex involved. Don’t take my card, but I did grow up reading the HP series. The first big book I read was Prisoner of Azkaban, so there was a lot of themes of torture and captivity there.

I also was very fixated on the forms of magical torture utilized, like how Neville’s parents were tortured until they completely broke as people. I made OCs that were cursed with magical pain and torment. I’m showing my weird side fully now but I looooved Lucious Malfoy. I dug the long blond hair and the wicked cane and how mean and terrible he was.

Star Wars was a big one later on, my weirdly piqued interest in Darth Vader being a horrible boss and being referred to as “master” and “my lord”.

Even the Princess Bride Torture scene, I was scared to watch it but couldn’t stop thinking about it.

I started writing a book in middle school that was very whump, although I didn’t have that term or an understanding of that kind of genre at the time. It was an odd plot. Not worth rewriting, but it’s funny to look back. While I was writing, I felt a certain excitement I couldn’t place. The closest I guessed was that I was such an empath that writing it “hurt” me, but that I enjoyed it so much for some reason. Pain was not what that feeling in my stomach was, I guess people here call them whumperflies.

I didn’t know anything about whump until….2020? I don’t even know how I stumbled upon it, but once I started to learn about the community, it was this huge relief like, “oh I’m not the only person who likes this! Lots of people like this! I’m not crazy!”

A Show/Movie/Book/Series that Gives Me Whumperflies

Honestly? I'm far too picky about whumpees and I don't consume all that much media (especially not these days since i have my own purpose-built character who is capable of hitting just about EVERYTHING I like) to have many items to rave about ^-^'

HOWEVER.

That does not mean that there is nothing :)

I'll go right back to the start, in fact (in rough order)... just keep in mind that I don't watch for whump, and these aren't whump recommendations except for one lmao, they're just what have managed to give me whumperflies in the past.

Cybergirl (2001-02)

An Australian sci-fi superhero T.V. series that was airing in the morning when I was a young kid, maybe 6 or 7, back before I understood how T.V. scheduling worked lol. I don't often get whumperflies from media, but I think this time, I did, and it's actually my earliest memory of whumperflies.

Cy ended up trapped in a Big Fancy House by the Big Bad, Rhyss. It's been many years since I last re-watched the show so I don't remember a whole lot except there was a lot of urgency and a zappy barrier that Cy couldn't pass through, and I definitely got some kind of feeling about that :)

The writing was very average, not very substantial for an older viewer, but it was excellent for a kids' show. There was so much lore that just never got expanded on, and it didn't go particularly hard with the whump :')

H2O Just Add Water (2006-10)

To no one's surprise, I ADORED this series as a kid. My obsession with mer had just started, and honestly, this shit FED ME. This was another Australian show that I watched when I was fairly young (again, 6-7 and onward), but I don't recall watching it when it aired. I instead had a collection of DVDs.

The girls and co got into some pretty interesting hijinks while trying to guard their fishy little secrets, but shit got REAL in season 6 when a marine biologist coworker of the friend of the girls' Lewis managed to leave a sample of their skin/scale in the lab... OOPS.

You can guess where that lead-- the scientist trying to track down the owner of the magic scale that could turn back into skin (somehow lmao, ~magic~), and she eventually trapped the girls in their little grotto with a gate that she had installed at the underwater entrance of their grotto spot on Mako Island.

Here's where I mention that I did not actually get whumperflies from this lmao, but it was a close one (the scientist didn't go far enough lmao). That's okay though :) One self indulgent decision just under 10 years later sure fixed that :))

Vampire Knight Anime (2008, English Dub aired in Aus in 2011)

The whole show. Every episode. I'm not even kidding. (Well, just about every episode lol, there was maybe only one where I didn't). As many problems as I have with the series, (mainly that every time I see Yuuki or hear her voice I want to strangle her), Zero was just so. fucking. scrunchy-- almost the perfect whumpee ^-^ And the English voice actor does such a glorious job of voicing Zero's pain, the whole series is ABSOLUTELY worth enduring Yuuki's stupidity.

Iirc, my favourite episode was Crimson Chains-- full of spoilers, a lot of plot bits come together at that point, so I can't say much other than that Zero's lost his shit and has a whole big scene where he writhes and pants on the floor with the agony of his hunger. I am convinced the author ALSO liked that XD

I would sit at night and watch that episode over and over and over because man, those whumperflies were something else, super intense, 11/10 lmao

Doctor Who (1963-present)

Nine had that one episode where he got caught by some collector dude and tortured to figure out what made him tick, or rather that he had TWO hearts that made him tick... Fun times, that DEFINITELY gave me whumperflies and had me furtively returning to the episode to keep watching that scene.

A lot of Ten's run had me by the throat, most memorably his regeneration at the start of his run, and his regeneration at the end directly after an hour (approximately) of whump was. AMAZING. I kept coming back to the start and end 😅

There were a couple more times I got whumperflies throughout his run. The main episodes that come to mind are Midnight, set on the planet of sapphires and lethal radiation, and 42, involving a spaceship hurtling toward a sun.

There was only one more whumpy instance, and that was that one movie they made. I forget who, when... EVERYTHING except the dude that played looked like Gene Wilder and it took place on NYE of the new millenium. It was another shitfight with The Master. ANYWAY. The whumperflies were at the START of the movie when The Doctor wasn't doing so well, I think he got shot?? And then rushed to the hospital, all while trying to avoid that and trying to communicate that they'll kill him

Supernatural (2005-20)

Ok. This one is weird in two ways. I forget which episode it was, but it was season 2 where Sam and Dean were trying to kick a group of vampires out of a town, but they were actually cool/chill vampires...?

Or at least some of them were...

ANYWAY.

This other hunter had this vampire chic tied to a chair baaaasically torturing her...? Memory's a bit foggy on what exactly what they were doing (the brainworms wouldn't stop wriggling about AUs), but I got these itty bitty whumperflies from that vampire lady getting hurt. That was weird because 1) I've only had whumperflies off the ladies once before watching Cybergirl which was SO long ago, and 2) I never have had them from watching a side-character, I usually have to be emotionally invested.

Weird right?? Absolutely wild though!
