The Prototype Handheld Quantum Tunneling Device, otherwise known as the Displacer Cannon, was an experimental man-portable teleportation device. Developed by Black Mesa, the Displacer Cannon was a miniaturized version of the much larger teleportation arrays they previously utilized. Using a combination of Uranium-235 and exotic matter sourced from Xen crystals collected from the Border World as its power source, the Displacer Cannon could successfully teleport terrestrial matter to Xen. The Displacer Cannon represented the absolute bleeding edge of Human teleportation technology prior to the Black Mesa Incident and subsequent calamaties. While other teleportation arrays have been made by the Human Resistance, none have come close to matching the portability and sophistication of the Displacer Cannon.

During the military response to the Black Mesa Incident, Corporal Adrian Shephard acquired and used a Displacer Cannon. Another Cannon was acquired by Gordon Freeman when he returned to the ruins of Black Mesa. Gordon uses his Displacer Cannon to teleport to the Border World, Xen, where he utilizes other old Black Mesa teleportation equipment left by survey teams to travel to other dimensions.

It is Gordon Freeman's most important possession, as he cannot hope to achieve his goal of finding and recovering Alyx Vance without it.

The Hazardous Environment Suit or HEV is a semi-powered protective suit designed to maximize the wearer’s survivability against a multitude of dangerous scenarios. At the most basic level, the HEV provides protection against radiation, corrosive or toxic chemicals, biological contaminants, blunt force trauma, lacerations, and even gunfire. It also includes an on-board computer  to monitor the user’s vitals, apply morphine or anti-toxins through an internal injection system and keeps track of external equipment and munitions.

The semi-powered nature of the HEV consists of electrically stimulated polymer bundles located in the upper arms and upper legs of the suit. While these do not provide a truly fantastic increase in strength they do allow the user to lift relatively heavy objects like steel barrels and large wooden crates with ease. As well as enabling the user to carry heavier equipment for longer periods of time. More than that, they afford the wearer greater general stamina by assisting movement and locomotion.

For personal protection, the HEV suit has multiple layers with differing functions and consistencies. These include radiation shielding, flame and corrosive resistant materials and an on-board supply of morphine and anti-toxins. The first and strongest layer of defense is the high-impact reactive armor plating concentrated on the upper torso, upper and lower arms and legs. The armor is a shape memory alloy that uses suit power to harden in response to increased levels of impact severity. The HEV is largely impervious to pistol and PDW caliber bullets, resistant to intermediate and rifle cartridges but vulnerable to anything larger.

Of course these enhancements are dependent on the suit remaining sufficiently charged. Black Mesa developed wall mounted charging stations as well as single-use power cells. The Mark V suit, a remodeled and repaired Mark IV, has been adapted to tap into Combine energy sources. The suit can still be worn and used with zero power, but given the weight of its various materials and systems it would exhaust the user over the course of a few hours.

Gordon’s Mark IV lacked a helmet, as it had been requisitioned by the top secret Lambda Sector of Black Mesa who had been losing HEV suits at an alarming rate during their expeditions to Xen. Gordon utilized his improvisational skills and managed to adapt his pair of glasses into electronically displaying the HEV’s heads-up display onto the lenses. The HEV suit Isaac Kleiner and the Resistance managed to acquire is presumably the same suit Gordon used during the Black Mesa Incident, anonymously provided to the Resistance by Gordon’s “employer.” It is still lacking a proper helmet, much to Gordon’s chagrin.
