Oh boy New Moon! I've got some Thoughts a brewin' babey:

1. Smeyer: you do not need to remind your audience what happened last book, they aren't stupid. Imagine if SC started catching fire with ANOTHER explanation of what the hunger games are and that's the vibe of the first chapters of new moon. We remember james, we know what vampires are, we know that Bella is white, stop reminding us!

2. Bella has the worst self esteem of all time. Every bad thing that has happened to her since the Van Incident has been Edward's fault but she still blames herself and idk if this is Intentional Insecurity or if smeyer is protecting edward's "character" or both but gdamn it's depressing.

3. The reason I said Jasper was Inconsistently Written jumped out at me again. Smeyer dedicated a whole paragraph to pointing out how terrible jasper is at the diet or whatever but in the guide, smeyer tells us jasper actively tried to starve himself in the past because of how difficult his gift made feeding. He was one of only two Cullens to show bella empathy, he smelled her blood before, why does he attack her? The weakness of this decision is pointed out in the exposition: if it really were likely that Jasper would attack Bella, she wouldn't have needed a superfluous paragraph dedicated to telling us how bad he is at self control. If the story had convinced us of that beforehand, we would have believed the attack without the addendum.

4. The party is my least favorite part of the whole series and I will die on this hill: edward should have attacked bella. Bella should have tripped into something glass and edward should have lost it because he tasted her blood before and couldn't help himself. That way: edwards self loathing makes sense and he's forced to recon with his superiority complex from the ending chapters of twilight AND bella's self blame makes sense. A vamp who was able to starve himself before he even heard of the cullens should not have lost it around someone he spent days in close quarters with, building rapport and friendship. Edward got too high and mighty after he fed from Bella in Twilight, that should have had real consequence.

5. The writing is getting a little better as we near Edward leaving. "Better" isn't a good word actually but it's getting closer to the prose in twilight (which was flowery and annoying but at least it didn't constantly feel like being spoonfed exposition every paragraph). Hm wrote this blurb while I was still on chapter 3 and the vibe of being spoonfed reminders has not really dissipated lmfao.

We remember Sam Uley, smeyer, you introduced him four chapters ago. Just quick question: did anyone proofread this?? I think it's fair to say: when she isn't reminding us of things that we remember the prose is more similar to twilight. A little annoying but interesting enough to forgive the errors (or at least move past them easily enough lol).

6. I'm on chapter 8 now (I'm gonna break this up into three parts so I don't forget stuff like I did during the twilight reread) and there's a very heavy Vibe that smeyer is setting Jake up to be a parallel for twilight-era Bella. This line here is a pretty clear parallel for Bella telling Edward not to hold his breath in Twilight when he tells her she might get tired of him.

7. This line here "almost happy in a shallow kind of way" really jumped out. What Bella's narration says about Jacob versus her conversations with him (and her one paragraph about his happiness being effortlessly contagious) are at odds. It doesn't read like shallow happiness when she's with Jake. However, Smeyer is also a bad writer, she thinks the story she's telling us is literally what the narration says and not what the action shows and I think she realizes this in Eclipse (but obviously I'm not there yet so I can't say for sure).

8. I really can't get over the drop in writing quality. I know that she had already mostly finished Forever Dawn by the time Twilight was published (or was halfway done, I think her website said she had over 300 pages of forever dawn complete when she found out Twilight was getting published). I think the writing quality really reveals that she was not prepared to write New Moon. It's sloppier than Twilight in a way I'm not able to articulate (by that I mean I personally have a more intuitive than technical understanding of grammar and syntax so I don't have the language to break down the differences). Twilight itself is ripe with technical errors and plot errors and awkward exposition so it's not an overt drop in quality but I think it very much reads like a rushed writing job. She was committed to forever dawn, her publishers wanted New Moon, it shows.

9. I think New Moon was when I first started physically editing my copies of the saga lol. Even reading it now I'm so tempted to open up a word document and cut half of the useless shit out and fix all the grammatical mistakes. I can't even talk shit because I am also a comma-abuser but I hoped an editor would at least catch the errors before publishing. Guess not! Brevity is very clearly not meyers strong suit and this would have been a much stronger sequel if she had been able to reign herself in a bit. New Moon isn't supposed to be as narration heavy as twilight, there's already more action in the first seven chapters than the there was in the first 19 of twilight but she always delivers exposition via awkward dialogue or Bella's narration. Again, we already got a lot of the exposition in twilight, we know how vampires work et cetera. You can show us how bella feels instead of making her tell us and the story would run a lot more smoothly.

10. I'll end on a nice note! Little treat!

This is my favorite part of the book so far. I whited-out the useless dialogue tag because the line reads better without it ( line originally ends with "I emphasized" but she could have been brief and just ended the dialogue with an exclamation point for the same effect). The dialogue is natural and shows the J/B relationship that lives in my head way better than anything else I've seen on the page at this point. Like, I literally love this line more than any dialogue that preceded it (including twilight) lol.

omg i’m never annoyed by this stuff, esp bc i usually don’t get to talk about them much!

let’s see... (warning: i tried to stay positive but failed. also this got long afff no pressure to read all of it lmfao)

we are young - controversial opinion: this is their best concept (to me in this moment, i could decide something else tomorrow lmao). the choreo isn’t bad and the song is catchy, even though the production quality of the studio version leaves a bit to be desired (it sounds tinny and not super full to me?). my main disappointment is with the live stage (...this is becoming a trend) where they messed up...kinda a lot. i feel like mistakes are normal but the ones they made were just incredibly noticeable and it’s telling to me that the camera angles couldn’t really hide them. the styling was awful for the most part but the concept was cute and i feel like zy is a lot more comfortable with long hair tbh.

super a warning ahead - i actually really enjoy the song! i think the way that they draw out some of the lines sounds a bit odd but the production and everything is much better than we are young. the reason why i put we are young above this one is because of the concept idea is general. like this song...doesn’t really go anywhere? like its...sweet? but not really interesting. the styling is sooooo much better, but the choreo is pretty boring, very give and take. I don’t mind a simple point dance because they have the potential to be iconic, memorable, and easily imitated, but the rest of the dance could’ve been a lot more interesting. but then again, they weren’t in sync in the dance performance video so like...idk. i feel like live performances are one thing, but prerecorded content should theoretically be better because they can do it in multiple takes? i don’t want to judge them *too* much but that is one are where i think they have been struggling (and i didn’t really expect it at all?)

so nothing that’s gonna make me unstan but it’s clear to me that their preparations were rushed. i wish they would like. take a month or two to regroup. i don’t want them gone for that long but if these are the performances that we’re getting on their current preparations i think it’d be for the best.

i also don’t think they’re making use of their strong vocalists (xilin, wyj, znx, and czx). like 4/7 are main vocal material and they could be doing a lot more with that. of course the issue is that the remaining members aren’t really comfortable with rapping and are (comparatively) weak singers, but they don’t make use of xiening or yifan’s dance abilities well either. i’ve said this before (and i’ll try not to hammer it in too much because it’s a pretty biased opinion) but watching zy do dance breaks with or after xiening is like...tragic. like idky they’re setting her up so bad but they need to stop TTTT

as a group they also kinda lack stage presence together. like individually most of them have pretty solid presence but idk what happens when they’re together bc they don’t really sync up?

//edit: okay at this point i decided that i was maybe being too harsh so i started analyzing the debut stages and mvs for rocket girls/hjsn and the9. it didn’t help and ended up being a ramble so feel free to skip lmfao

ytsn & hjsn: bc hjsn debuted with 8 members (minus already debuted meiqi and xuanyi & main vocal zining) and not their full 11 they’re kinda comparable to ytsn as they are now. while ytsn’s styling is somehow better, hjsn’s sync and energy, even taking into account their members who aren’t great dancers, is kind of on a different level (partially biased though, despite that fact that i’m not fully a stan they’re my number one pick for most balanced gg of all time). i’m going to guess that even though they’re produced by the same company that their teams and company philosophy regarding management is completely different. the choreo quality is quite different and ytsn seems to favor debut rank a lot more. of course, meiqi and xuanyi were featured very prominently when they came back but the formations weren’t as stagnant as ytsn’s seem as of now? both groups are similar in that their main dancers (mengjie and xiening) ranked relatively low and therefore didn’t get to show their full ability very often. also an important difference between hjsn and ytsn is that hjsn’s main rapper is kind of legendary and was well known for her ability before the show so. there’s not really a comparison there (for the record though, i like curely’s rapping i just think 1.) it’s a waste given her vocal ability and 2.) she hasn’t been given really long verses because while she has talent she’s not “a rapper” in the typical way).

the9 & hjsn: idk if u watched qcyn2 but i decided to watch a bit of it since i thought it was kinda interesting that the two final groups would be debuting at the same time. to compare the two...ytsn’s vocals are stronger and i think that’s generally accepted as fact. like yuyan is really good but they put so much pressure on her (personally i think anqi and shaking could share the burden but idk). other than that everyone else is a subvocal and/or rapper, so by default the9 wins the rap category. oddly enough, because there are so many rappers they can’t have those longer satisfying verses because they have to share the lines, which impacts their....impact for lack of a better word. there’s kinda no other way to do it without everything being super uneven so i get it though. that leaves dance and stage presence. i think that individually anqi and xiening eat everyone else alive, but comparing group to group...the9 wins for their sync alone, but notably ytsn has performed more and have one more song with choreo. i don’t know i would say that they’re super uneven in presence, but i do feel that because of the number of members with previous stage experience in the9, they are more comfortable performing. 

for fun i once took the 16 members of the9 and ytsn and redistributed them into more balanced lineups of 8

i lowkey stacked the first team with both centers, anqi, and keyin but whatever

anyways based on how i feel about the other debuts i kinda think im being mostly fair to ytsn? especially because i think they’ll grow a lot as a group over the next two years. i’d be a lot more concerned about their vocals if that was the problem because that’d be the hardest thing to fix but they don’t have to worry about that!

he watched a lot of walkthroughs to make those worlds, he ain’t taking the videos down now

as he grew up, he played minecraft less and less, and after meeting hyunjin in school, started playing more FPS games (first person shooters, like battlefield fyi)

he probably had a Little Big Planet phase between that transition though

he’s still getting the hang of the shooting games

he cannot play zombies for shit in call of duty though

not because he’s scared of them

but because when a hoard of zombies comes he panics and starts spray shooting horribly

so he ends up getting attacked

as well as gaming though he has a knack for singing

as he grew up he got more confident in his singing

and so he started posting song covers

his old videos used to be SO out of focus and blurry

sometimes he would put the camera in a really bad position so half his body wouldn’t even be in the frame

but because the audio was gr88

he posted it anyways

after chan saw that video though he was like

so chan got down and fixed seungmin‘s entire camera set-up

so seungmin has left it exactly as that

he hasn't moved anything the slightest millimetre

 he even took pics in case something happened to the set-up

and he took down notes in his journal about everything that chan said as he was fixing the place

the rest of his bedroom is also really cute!!!

alongside felix, he’s the only one to have properly decorated his room and show it in his videos

the guys were holleringggg when they found out lmao

and they don’t let hyunjin live this down

so he’s basically sworn revenge and has made it his life’s goal to obliterate seungmin in a game now

and then the day came that seungmin was like

ok, i’ll fight you, but in a game of my choice

and hyunjin was so desperate to beat him he was just like okkkk

finally!!!!

obviously, MAJOR THROWBACKKK, seungmin picked minecraft

they had a week until the battle would commence

so both boys were playing non-stop minecraft in preparation

felix was just like “damn and you guys call me extra???”

the day of the fight!!!!

seungmin had chosen the Battle mini game

(a quick rundown: each player starts somewhere on the map, there are treasure chests everywhere in the map (and like 5 chests in the middle). you gotta collect weapons, armour, food and potions from the chests because you gotta fight the other person before the time runs out)

seungmin figured that hyunjin would run to the chests in the middle so instead

he ran to the chests near his hiding place

(yeah, he knows all the maps like the back of his hand)

and he got decent resources from there (a bow and a few arrows, some apples, 2 regeneration potions and a mixture of armour)

there was still enough time so he ran to a couple more chests before the showdown began and he had to fight hyunjin

MEANWHILE

(as seungmin correctly guessed) hyunjin ran to the middle of the map to get to the 5 treasure chests

and he racked up a lot of food, armour, a couple of diamond swords and some shitty potions

when the showdown began he moved to one corner of the map so he could try to find seungmin

and seungmin knew that eventually, once hyunjin couldn’t see him, he would get annoyed and start searching for seugmin

so he waited like 30 more secs before he saw hyunjin’s character moving around the map

almost near the end of the countdown,,,,

and neither had fought yet lmao

but seungmin was quite high up and hyunjin hadn’t managed to spot him yet (or find a way to get to higher ground)

so riiight when hyunjin was below seungmin he started shooting his arrows lmao

and hyunjin, being startled, jumped down quickly

wrong move !!!!

because seungmin could still shoot at him

and then when hyunjin had run away seungmin jumped down

and he swapped to his diamond pickaxe and

whilst hyunjin was looking up trying to find him

seungmin literally stabbed him in the back with his axe

so hyunjin quickly turned around with his sword

managed to get a few hits

but

ultimately

seungmin won

yOOOO the boys were screamingggg

seungmin had actually beat hyunjin fair and square lmfao

jeongin, felix, and woojin were with seungmin

and jisung, chan, changbin and minho were with hyunjin

yeah they were in separate houses

so that nobody screenwatched

(they took it that seriously)

felix skyped jisung just so that hyunjin could see them all partying and laughing whilst hyunjin was just there like

my gaming rep is now non-existent

minecraft boi actually beat me

he’s lowkey proud of seungmin bc damn he planned his attack so well

but still

he stabbed him in the back man

it was still hilarious to watch

they all went out to celebrate the next day

changbin amde a lil’ rap about how shit hyunjin is at gaming now

and after that seugmin actually posted the video of him slaying hyunjin’s ass

within the first minute of seugmin posting that video there was one dislike

from a certain salty hwang hyunjin

he’s now made it his plan to improve in a game that hyunjin’s great at so he can beat him at that too

but that’s gonna take a while lmao

so yeah, although hyunjin will 5ever be salty that he got beat by seungmin

he still looks out for him like he’s his lil’ bro

it’s so cute honestly

and they’re always hanging out with each other in school now

practically inseparable

&& although the guys mocked him for his minecraft vids

he knows they still love him and they’re basically all just older bros to him that are always there for him to depend on

and there’s jeongin as his lil’ bro he can be the youngster with

they pretty much always act cute to get the older guys to do their bidding
