my own interpretation of neverafter is that its less about disney/capitalism/etc but more about the idea of storytelling. its abt themes of power & control, personhood & identity, childhood & change - and how those themes relate to the concept of narratives.
like - what does it mean to tell stories, preserve stories and to be a character within a story? how can narratives act as a force of happiness and violence? i think theres something really interesting about the times of shadow - that it corrupts these original happy endings, but eventually reveals how 'corrupted' they were from the start. that perhaps "things going wrong" is just the natural progression of the thematic core of these stories.
