𝐒𝐈𝐋𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄.   𝐓𝐇𝐍 𝐀 𝐌𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐄.     ‘  it must require great strength to be gentle.  ’     this, a foreign feeling to the armour-clad knight of arms.   gentleness is something reserved for home, not for the constant.   even as she watches by   —   a queen GRACEFUL still when wielding a weapon of her own   —   there is an awe striking her.     ‘  though, i suppose i never quite got the knack for archery.  ’

lily goes above and beyond when it comes to gift giving for her friends. she finds out their favorite sweets, and things they want but won’t bye themselves. she also tends to include baked goods that she made herself.

IT HAD BEEN a number of summers since Daphne had found her way back East. While her roots did not reside in Narnia the country ( rather, in Narnia the land ), she had spent so many years in the Western Wood that the location of her roots did little other than to allow her to feel unfettered to any sort of sovereign. The kings and queens she chose to speak to were because of her own faith in them.
The Pevensie royals had very nearly been the time that she turned her back on the country; the trees had lost so much in the Winter, and her wintry sisters had been turned against in suspicion. Daphne had, what now felt like long ago, been convinced by a young king on his way to survey the woods to give one more chance to the rule of men before spiriting away to a place they could not touch her.
Daphne was certainly glad she had given them a chance, as they had turned out to be capable. After some stumbling, as was expected for a child of any species, crown or not, they were capable.
And now, it appeared, they had shot up from saplings without her realizing. Time moved differently for the trees, admittedly, but the voice for the dryads had forgotten how quickly mortals moved through life.
She arrived as she always had, in a form she had chosen a long, long time ago, in a dress that was fashioned after Old Narnia rather than New, sticking out in a way that the Tree of Youth did not mind. She smiled when she stepped into the courtyard at Cair Paravel for the first time in a long time. She had seen the younger king throughout his summers, watching him grow taller; after all, he stood warden over the Western Wood where she too acted as guardian. But the others — the queens — she had not seen since they were barely petals, and now they stood strong and lovely.
Daphne had been greeted by the king she knew best, his hands on her cheeks in an act of familiar affection, when she saw Susan. She smiled, giving Edmund’s hands a small squeeze before he stepped away, and she turned to look at Susan. “You are bigger than I remember,” she remarked. “I forgot how quickly your kind grows! But you look lovely. Absolutely lovely.”

❝ Sometimes I think His Majesty my father-in-law means to be rid of me. ❞
Confession is given candidly, but hushed, to keep her words from any snooping ears. Still, it is not quite a secret, not among her own court. The king of Corona’s distaste for his son’s bride had never been well-veiled, especially not since the loss of her first pregnancy. Now, with another tragedy compounded, her father-in-law has begun to speak of sin and punishment and unworthiness. Officially, she has been sent to Narnia as an envoy for her husband’s kingdom, to give her time to heal and recover. But in her heart, Arianna thinks she has been sent away to keep her away from her Frederic while the king seeks to annul their marriage.
But still, in the halls of Cair Paravel, princess consort keeps her voice low as she walks with her hostess  --  As though she might mar the natural beauty of Narnia with her personal woes. Yet, at the same time, Arianna feels oddly compelled to confide. Queen Susan would not, she believes, betray her confidence.
❝ He has never liked me much and now believes he has justification. ❞

THERE WAS NO DOUBT IN BRIANNA’S MIND      She knew she was no longer at Craigh Na Dun. The stones were still here, true, but it’s surroundings had changed. The landscape was vastly different from Inverness     where there had once been mountains and fields as long as the eye could see, there was now ocean and cliffs. Was it possible the stones had multiple functions, and that time travel was not its sole talent? Could they have transported her here      wherever here was?
She hadn’t walked for very long before the sound of horse hooves came upon her, which quickly turned into the form of a sole rider approaching her from behind. Brianna greeted the woman with a nod and a careful smile, wary of any and all strangers now that she had no idea where she was.
Tumblr media
“             I apologise if I have trespassed, Miss. I seem to have gotten LOST.  ”   She’d figure out her story later, so a vague explanation would have to do for now.

The change Inside (Susan & Aslan)
“Once a king or queen of Narnia, always a king or queen of Narnia.”
This is one of the most important laws in Narnia. A true law that will never be broken.
In the 1940s big changes were happening not just on the Earth but also in a girl’s heart. A girl who was growing up to a woman: Susan Pevensie. As time passed, she started to forget about Narnia altogether, deeming it only as a children's game. Susan might have forgotten about Narnia but Aslan hadn’t forgotten about her.
So now he came to her. In her dream.
The place was very dark and empty at first. Soon an orange-white light faded up in the middle making the moving mist visible in front of it. While this was happening, the Lion showed up there walking slowly towards Susan, though only his contour was seen.
Then he stopped.
“Susan.” Aslan whispered, his voice was sounding soft, there was no anger in it. “Susan.” He called again.

@wasgentle cont. from [x]
“there now, sweet friend - - - surely it is not all so bad?” with no hesitation, the young narnian queen takes both hands in hers, leads her to a window-seat plush with cushions, sunlight streaming in with a breeze from off the sea. “foolishness is often fixed more easily than one might think, and for my part i have some doubt that you are to blame in this. tell me what troubles you so?”
Tumblr media
“ my lady, my companion, she has - ” oh she felt like such a fool, such a terrible idiot. how could she ever face the archenlandish court again now that she has been so humiliated for the second time? what a failure they must think her, completely uncapable of good judgement!
a sob escaped from her lips and the princess could barey look her friend in the eyes. what an embarrassment to appear in such a state before her. “ she has been conspiring with my ex-fiancé all this time and now she has snuck away like a thief in the night to marry him! she is even mocking me in her farewell note, here, you can almost hear her gloating! ”  a tear-stained, crumpled letter was retrieved from the hidden pocket in her dress, given to the young queen. her embarrassment could not be greater than it already was so hardly any more harm could be done by letting her friend see the letter. “ oh susan, what a dreadfully blind fool i have been to have been betrayed not once but twice by people close to me! it is only good i shall never inherit a throne for my idiocy would only bring ruin upon archenland!  ”

“IT IS NOT the trees who start wars, nor trees who fight in them. It is the trees who are felled in swaths to make fires for camps and spaces for battlefields.” Daphne was sitting next to the queen, who she had been tasked with keeping safe during the preparations. She looked out at the encampment, her lips pursed with concern. “Why do men start wars?”

psst how does susan being considered "the pretty one" impact lucy?? what are her thoughts/feelings about that? how does it influence/change the relationship between the sisters? etc!
this is such an in-depth, excellent question i’m almost angry at you for sending it !!
lucy has two very different reactions to this during the golden age vs during england.
in narnia, susan gains a reputation as the most beautiful woman in the world. which lucy is inclined to agree with ( supportive sisters !! ) and it doesn’t bother her, in the sense of making her feel inferior because lucy has her own reputation as a valiant knight, a HERO, etc, and in narnia a woman’s worth isn’t dictated by her beauty. so during the golden age it doesn’t bother her in the slightest, because she knows her own worth to narnia.
when back in england things get more complicated to say the least. lucy is a little girl again, a little girl who is constantly getting into trouble for things she doesn’t understand / for things she doesn’t think are wrong. she is constantly being compared to susan ( why can’t you be more like your sister?  /  you know susan never did this /  etc. ), and the comparison is always done in a way that makes it  obvious that susan is the Good One and lucy is the Bad One. so, when their mother ( and teachers and, well, everyone ) start to call susan The Pretty One, it becomes clear to lucy that she’s, well, not pretty. now, lucy has never been the sort to worry about her appearance, or how people view her appearance, and she’d agree with everyone that susan is the pretty one !!!  her sister is beautiful !!! but now suddenly it’s important, because the way people talk about it is like if lucy was pretty, then everything else about her that she gets in trouble for would magical disappear or become better. she’d be accepted by everyone ( her parents, her teachers, her classmates who, by and large, bully her, etc ) and things wouldn’t, well, be so difficult for her; england would be easy like how it is for susan, like how narnia was.
this is why she’s tempted in dawn treader by the spell in the book that grants beauty beyond compare ( well beyond the fact that that’s the entire point of the spell ). it’s not the beauty that she’s tempted by, exactly, it’s the respect / love she’d get as a result. in england, it doesn’t feel like she gets any of that, and the only way she can get it is through becoming prettier aka becoming more like susan. to lucy, it seems like susan can just waltz through life perfectly composed  ---  she always knows what to do, the right things to say, people always approve of her, always respect her and treat her like an adult. meanwhile, lucy is constantly being punished, told off, and in england she’s told time and time again that she’s wrong ( through punishment at schools, through the bullies at school, through her parents, through comparisons to her siblings --- notably susan ).
after the events of dawn treader, when aslan tells her she’s to get a life in england because england is where she will remain, lucy steels herself to the future. dawn treader is basically her coming of age story, and when she gets back to england there would be a noticeable difference in her demeanor; she’s still lucy, of course, but you can tell that she’s matured some.
yet the comparisons to susan still continue, the difference now being that lucy isn’t as sensitive to them as she used to be. she doesn’t care about societal acceptance the way susan does  ---  she likes who she is, she has plans, she knows aslan loves her, and that’s all that matters to her. yet that doesn’t mean the comparisons don’t hurt or affect her relationship with susan. even before susan starts rejecting narnia, lucy starts taking things susan says very sensitively  ---  any ‘advice’ susan may give lucy, lucy would take as harsh criticism and would react poorly too, no matter how tender the advice is. lucy would be very sensitive to susan trying to “control” her, as in susan trying to make lucy like her ( an unfounded worry, really, but since everyone else is trying to get lucy to be more like susan, surely susan herself is trying to do that too ? ), which basically means that lucy would reject / react poorly to susan trying to mother her in any way like susan always has.
lucy represents absolute, pure faith. susan represents societal expectations / approval / status. the two can’t exist together --- they are paradoxical. so, of course, they are going to be at odds with one another. when susan starts rejecting aslan and narnia, lucy tries to bring susan back and when that doesn’t work, lucy then rejects susan. she feels like she has to in order to remain loyal to aslan ( .... and that susan deserves it, the traitor !! ), but in rejecting susan, lucy is rejecting the whole of society and society’s ideals / expectations. no longer, lucy concerns herself with what people/society say she should do  ;  she doesn’t go to dances, she doesn’t date, she doesn’t conform to typical femininity, etc. she does what she knows aslan wants her to and focuses on doing what she has to in order to accomplish that. she no longer cares about being the pretty one.
tl;dr: the comparisons to susan, whether direct or intentional or not, are the first strike in crumbling of the sisters’ relationship that happens in england, even if it initially did not cause much of a rift at the time they started.
