briar  ridge's  summer  musical  festival  was  proving  to  be  less  enchanting  than  the  lofty  expectations  that  had  been  painted  for  her.  the  atmosphere  buzzed  with  excitement ,  and  it  was  undeniably  a  bustling  spot ,  with  a  crowd  much  larger  than  she  had  imagined.  however ,  despite  the  lively  energy  around  her ,  this  was  not  the  kind  of  environment  in  which  farrah  felt  comfortable.  farrah  had  always  preferred  the  solitude  of  the  tennis  court ,  where  the  sound  of  sneakers  squeaking  against  the  court and  the  rhythmic  thump  of  the  ball  were  far  more  inviting  than  the  cacophony  of  small - town chatter  surrounding  her  now.

the  vibrant  music  and  colourful  vendours had  drawn  in  a  throng  of  festival - goers ,  yet  farrah  couldn’t  shake  the  feeling  of  being  out  of  place.  as much as the spotlight and being the centre of attention agreed with her , social  gatherings  were  never  her  forte ;  they  drained  her  in  ways  that  competitive  sports  invigorated  her.  the  only  reason  she  even  thought  about  coming  to  this  festival  was  because  her  daughter ,  emerie ,  had  relentlessly  pleaded  with  her  to  attend.  emerie's  enthusiasm  for  spending  time  with  her  friends  and  enjoying  the  festivities  was  infectious ,  and  it  tugged  at  farrah's  heartstrings.  how  could  she  say  no ?

so  here  she  was ,  standing  on  the  fringes  of  the  crowd ,  forcing  a  smile  with emerie in her arms while  internally  grappling  with  her  discomfort.  she  was  grinning  and  bearing  it because while for once in her life  , farrah  felt  like  an  outsider  looking  in.  emerie  wiggles in her arms , dancing  to  the  live  band’s  rhythm ,  and  for  a  moment ,  farrah  allowed  herself  to  feel  a  flicker  of  joy  from  her  daughter's  exuberance.  perhaps  she  could  find  a  way  to  embrace  this  festival ,  if  only  for  emerie’s  sake.

❛ where are we going next , ej ? is it face painting time ? ❜ emerie nods her head viciously. a squeal of excitement leaving her lips. farrah hypes her daughter up by bouncing in her arms. ❛ what are you going to get , baby ? maybe some pretty flowers and sparkles ? ... i think i'm going to get a butterfly. ❜ emerie points at alex next , and farrah looks over at the father of her child , the next words she says with a mocking grin. ❛ what should daddy get painted , ej ? ─ how about a clown. ❜

001. welcome back, slut!

connie, ted, and schlatt have been friends and roommates for a majority of college, seeing eachother through so many important experiences. but when connie comes home from summer break without a boyfriend, the first time since the three have met, house dynamics suddenly shift.

with a sigh, connie set down her suitcase and began fishing around her bag for her housekeys.

if i lost them this summer, i swear to god...

triumphant, she unlocked the front door, dragging her belongings behind.

it seems like ted and schlatt kept the house in decent shape over the summer, having elected to both stay for on-campus internships, while connie decided to take one closer to home and stay with her parents.

"hello?" she called out, not bothering to grab her phone and check findmyfriends.

"connie!" she saw ted come into the living room, giving her a hug to welcome her back.

"hi, ted," connie returned, tucking a piece of dark hair behind her ear as he released her from his grasp. "is schlatt home?"

"nah, he's picking up some pizza we ordered," ted answered, before continuing, "i thought you were coming back tomorrow? if we knew you were gonna be here tonight, we'd have ordered more."

"what, so now you're calling me fat?" connie laughed, to ted's panic.

"no no no of course not i—" "ted i'm joking, christ!"

she watched as relief soften his features.

"do you need help bringing anything else in?"

"no, this is it, but thanks, man," connie flashed him a smile before hauling everything upstairs to her room.

it was a mess, just as she'd left it. internally cursing herself, connie threw her hair up into a ponytail, beginning the (what would likely be grueling) process of organizing and putting everything from the summer away.

half an hour later, connie heard the slam of the front door, signaling schlatt's arrival. having made decent progress on her room, she paused her music and went downstairs, though whether it was to greet her roommate or beg for a slice of pizza, even she didn't know.

"schlatt!" she grinned, hugging his side as he balanced a large pizza in one hand and a brown paper bag in the other.

"whoa! watch it, bitch," he squacked, his balancing act in jeopardy from the force of her greeting. he set his haul on the counter and called to ted for dinner.

with the most exaggerated puppy-dog eyes she could muster, connie began to beg for dinner. "pleaaase, schlatt? i'm your favorite roommate!" ted protested this, as schlatt used one hand to gently push her away, "you're lucky you're cute."

"i know!" she grinned, taking the paper plate he handed her and taking a place on the sofa.

her roommates soon joined her, and they began to, as connie called it, "debrief" their summers.

ted and schlatt's were both rather uneventful, mostly containing work stories, drinking, and lake days. mustering up every bit of courage and resolution she could find, connie finally broke the news that had been weighing on her for the past month.

"so..." she started, as the boys leaned in, "at the end of july... alex and i broke up."

the house was silent for a moment, before ted and schlatt simultaneously jumped up and began celebrating.

"we hated that fuckin' guy!" schlatt announced. "yeah, he was kind of a hick, and no good for you, he sucked!" added ted.

"wow, um, okay," connie put her hands up, almost in a surrender stance. "tell me how you really feel, then,”

"c'mon, cons, you can't tell me you're upset about that breakup. he's an asshole! i'm glad he's gone," ted sat back down beside her, a comforting hand on her arm. schlatt followed suit, sitting in the armchair by the couch.

"well," she watched as he reached into the brown paper bag that had made it into the living room with them. "i think that calls for a drink."

he pulled out his typical whiskey, some tequila for ted, and finally presented connie with her beloved seven-dollar wine.

"oh, schlatt, you're too kind," she feigned the utmost gratitute for her gift.

"yeah, yeah, ted told me you came home early, and i was stoppin' anyway, now i'm out seven bucks." he looked to her, grasping the neck of the bottle. "well? drink, bitch," he mimed pushing the wine up, and connie did just that, taking a few sips straight from the bottle.

"thanks, man. i do really appreciate it." she sent him a grin, readjusting to have her legs across ted's lap on the couch. "anyway, i'm not quite heartbroken." with another sip, she continued, "all i can really say is, alex is no longer my first and only."

this came with mild applause from her friends. connie had been notoriously loyal to her bum of a boyfriend for the past four years, despite the fact that he was often... not quite as dedicated, to put it nicely. he also would never believe connie when she said that there was nothing going on between her and whichever roommate he chose to demonize on that particular visit, even though she is largely too-innocent for her age. or, at least she was.

"boys, i have learned of the hellscape that is tinder, and there is no going back for me." she grinned, following her statement with yet another sip.

laughing a little, ted asked whether she was enjoying the post-breakup hoe phase.

"hoe phase? nah, hoe life. i been goin' through—“

"okay and with a quick change of topic," ted cut her off, likely not wanting to hear the gory details, "what do you guys think of having a party on friday? a little back to school function? most people should be around by then."

"why? so we can celebrate constance's glorious return?" schlatt asked, "what a great theme; welcome back, slut!"

connie knew he was joking, but still argued back, trying to defend herself, "and how many girls did you have over last semester, jared?"

"don't fuckin' call me that!"

"guys, guys, party? friday? yes or no?" desperate to start planning, ted attempted to re-focus the group.

"yeah, i'm game, i'll start texting people when i'm done getting moved in," connie began wracking her brain for a list of who to invite, knowing that ted likely wanted a packed house to celebrate the end of summer.

"sure, i don't care," nonchalant as ever, schlatt began picking up the remnants of dinner.

"great!" ted rubbed his hands together, clearly eager to start planning. "we're gonna start this semester off right."

Hi, everyone! After a long time of not posting anything to my shoutout series, I'm back! You can see previous posts here, but basically, I used to make one of these every week to give a shoutout to creators on this site.

how they embody their trope:

(brief neglect mention tw) Facades, facades, facades. In hindsight, it’s a wonder her first words as a toddler hadn’t been scripted for her and pre-approved by the Astor PR team. She’s the only child of two lawyers - with her mother serving her second term as New York’s attorney general and her father ensuring that multi-million dollar corporations were able to skirt around their social, environmental and fiscal obligations. They’re not American royalty, not by any means, but the Astor name carries a certain weight, and her parents would sooner give up all their worldly possessions than let her forget it. It wasn’t her parents who brought her up, so much as their expectations. Perfect grades, perfectly behaved, perfectly aligned with their wants and needs. The Astors hadn’t really wanted a child. What they’d been in the market for was a trophy. Henrietta, by virtue of her upbringing, is a perfectionist. Nothing she ever did as a child was good enough for her parents (not that they’d ever say that, but she could sense it), and nothing she ever does as a young adult is enough to meet her own impossible standards. She’s spent considerable time and effort constructing a vision of herself that she feels comfortable portraying to others, a thin veneer to keep herself hidden from onlookers - a never-ending performance. And part of that was being Greer’s best friend. After all, you’re only as good as the company you keep. She’s yet to take an actual tumble, but with Greer missing, the paint job on the facade that is Henrietta is slowly starting to crack. It’s only a matter of time before it starts chipping, too. 

general personality: 

Were I to use one word to describe Henrietta, it would have to be sharp. It’s her defining characteristic - she’s all edges, all the time. Sharp wit, sharper tongue. At least that’s the curated version of her. The one you’d get to see. Beneath the high school mean-girl persona, behind the rolling eyes and raised brows, she’s genuine and vulnerable and has the capacity for care. But she’s been raised to believe that kindness is a weakness, something for others to exploit, and so she’s extinguished that flamed. Stubbed the embers into the ground with her foot. Because it’s easier to keep people at a comfortable distance this way. This way, they won’t get too close. They won’t be able to see her for the lonely, insecure person she’s tried so desperately to keep under wraps.

003 – greer.

If there is such a thing as a universal truth, it is that teenage girls exercise cruelty rarely seen outside of cartoony depictions of hell. And if the Manolo-toting schemers of gossip girl were anything to go by, Manhattan girls were the absolute worst. Henrietta had thrown an uncharacteristic fit when her parents had broached the subject of moving (in the middle of the school year, no less) - tears wiped on the back of cashmere sleeves, voice choked with adolescent desperation. Were they trying to ostracise her from her peers? Ensure she’d stand out like a sore thumb? How did they expect her to find friends, when social hierarchies and cliques had already fully solidified by now? The answer to the latter was, unsurprisingly, Greer. Henrietta had hardly set foot on the grounds of her new alma mater, before Greer had linked elbows with her, flashed her a bright smile, and announced to anyone who’d listen that this, this was her best friend now. Maybe, she’d told herself as she returned home from that first day, moving hadn’t been such a bad idea after all. Ever since that first meeting, the two of them had been practically joined at the hip. If Greer was there, you could place a pretty safe bet that Henrietta was there. Joint birthday parties in their early teens, trips abroad over the summer holiday, secrets shared behind walk-in-closet doors. They were inseparable. It was the sort of friendship others looked at through either a lens of envy or aspiration. Or both. Perhaps that’s why Henrietta feels so guilty over how restricted she’d felt since traipsing in Greer’s footsteps all the way to Ogden. It wasn’t that she didn’t still love Greer in that platonic way a best friend does, because she really, really did, but college had just highlighted just how much her existence had been fashioned as an extension of Greer. It wasn’t like the power dynamic had ever been even, not even back in New York, but something about the new backdrop to their relationship had lit up its flaws like a starry night sky. Getting to bask in Greer’s light also meant existing in her shadow. It was always Greer, and then Henrietta, half a step behind. It was hard not to feel like an afterthought. An asterisk at the end of a lengthy paragraph.  004 – family.

(see here) To say that Henrietta’s relationship with her family teethers on being strained, would be an understatement. Everything she does is with the express intent of getting their approval, and yet, she’s never so much as gotten a nod in recognition. Everything she achieves, her brother (four years her senior) has already done. And better at that. During her formative years, they were too concerned with getting Evangeline elected as attorney general to let their children be children. And now they’re too concerned with getting her re-elected to see the damage that did to them.

The city was getting far too crowded for her liking. It made things far more complicated then they needed to be. Case in point. The coffee shop was far too crowded this early. How was a cat burglar suppose to maintain her nocturnal schedule if she couldn’t get coffee? Two orders called at the same time, she swiped one drink from the counter. No, she hadn’t paid for it but who would be the wiser with it so crowded? The building was still amidst the repairing, no one had looked away.  Tossing the blonde from her shoulder she stared down the body in her path. “You’re blocking the door,” she took a long sip of the coffee, fighting a grimace. God gross.

Nadir can’t deny he’s surprised to head the doorbell ring. It’s not like a whole lot of people know where he lives now, but that doesn’t really matter. Someone’s at the door and with Conrad out at work, there’s not much else Nadir can do except answer it. “Hold on a minute!” He calls out as he navigates around the boxes on the floor in the kitchen to get over to the door. He’s expecting a friend or maybe one of his family, his sister or his mom come to see how the new place is going.

What he doesn’t expect when he swings the door open is Alex, and for a moment all he can do is stare blankly and wonder how his day turned so quickly from pretty good to absolute crap. It takes about a minute before he can even say anything, and then all he can think of is. “You’re back.” [ @havokwreakcd ]

Roy’s more used to working on weapons, gadgets, bows and new trick arrows - but taking some time to build things is a little different, and he can’t deny he’s enjoying himself. He looks over to the man who’s been helping him, nodding his head as he hoists the sign a little higher so they can reattach it to the store. “A little higher buddy, we’re almost there.” He says flashing a smile, hoping he’s more reassuring than annoying. He only has limited time before the CBI want him back at work after all - and he wants to make it count. [ @fuckboisummers ]

WOLVES 0-1 LIVERPOOL

Liverpool recorded back to back Premier league away wins for the first time since January when Diogo Jota scored to give Liverpool a 1-0 victory at Molineux on Monday Night live on Sky Sports. The Portuguese winger who made the switch from Molineux to Anfield in the summer for a reported £45 million put the finishing touches on an attacking move just before half time, slotting the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the goal.

Jurgen Klopp kept the same team that comfortably beat Leipzig in midweek 2-0 whilst Wolves made 1 change from the team that drew 0-0 to Aston Villa bringing in Willy Boly for Leandro Dendoncker

Wolves started the game brighter and called Allison into a smart save down low to his right from Nelson Semedo which led to appeals from the Wolves players and staff for a penalty. Liverpool’s first attack of the game came from a sublime pass from Georgino Wijandlum who played Senegalese international Saido Mane one and one with Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio who took the ball round the goalkeeper but lefthimself with too much to do from a tight angle. The next major opportunity in the game came for Liverpool when Saido Mane headed wide from a cross delivered from England international Trent Alexander Arnold.

Just before half time the play of the game started to become more open andthe first goal felt like it was coming. It could become vital to the outcome ofthe match. Ruben Neves ran onto the ball inside the penalty area after a cross from Jonny came to the back post that Neves sliced wide of the left-hand corner just before half time.

Liverpool launched a breakaway on the stroke of half time and this gave Liverpool’s front three a chance to run at the Wolves backline. Mohammed Salah passed the ball to Saido Mane who quickly shifted the ball to Diogo Jota who beat fellow countryman Rui Patricio at his near post to give Liverpool the lead at half time. 

The game continued to provide chances in the second half with Mohammed Salah coming closest in the second half after substitute Alex Oxlade - Chamberlain provided a through ball to his teammate who slotted the ball with a sublime finish just for the linesman to raise his flag and the goal was confirmed to be offside by the VAR officials at Stockley Park.

In the last few minutes Liverpool had to show resilience and defensive organisation to hang onto the three points, Wolves piled on some pressure that required Brazilian goalkeeper Allison to make two saves. However, this wasn’t enough for Wolves to snatch a point and Jota’s goal in the 45th minute provided the difference between the two teams on the night.

how they embody their trope:

(brief neglect mention tw) Facades, facades, facades. In hindsight, it’s a wonder her first words as a toddler hadn’t been scripted for her and pre-approved by the Astor PR team. She’s the only child of two lawyers - with her mother serving her second term as New York’s attorney general and her father ensuring that multi-million dollar corporations were able to skirt around their social, environmental and fiscal obligations. They’re not American royalty, not by any means, but the Astor name carries a certain weight, and her parents would sooner give up all their worldly possessions than let her forget it. It wasn’t her parents who brought her up, so much as their expectations. Perfect grades, perfectly behaved, perfectly aligned with their wants and needs. The Astors hadn’t really wanted a child. What they’d been in the market for was a trophy. Henrietta, by virtue of her upbringing, is a perfectionist. Nothing she ever did as a child was good enough for her parents (not that they’d ever say that, but she could sense it), and nothing she ever does as a young adult is enough to meet her own impossible standards. She’s spent considerable time and effort constructing a vision of herself that she feels comfortable portraying to others, a thin veneer to keep herself hidden from onlookers - a never-ending performance. And part of that was being Greer’s best friend. After all, you’re only as good as the company you keep. She’s yet to take an actual tumble, but with Greer missing, the paint job on the facade that is Henrietta is slowly starting to crack. It’s only a matter of time before it starts chipping, too.

Were I to use one word to describe Henrietta, it would have to be sharp. It’s her defining characteristic - she’s all edges, all the time. Sharp wit, sharper tongue. At least that’s the curated version of her. The one you’d get to see. Beneath the high school mean-girl persona, behind the rolling eyes and raised brows, she’s genuine and vulnerable and has the capacity for care. But she’s been raised to believe that kindness is a weakness, something for others to exploit, and so she’s extinguished that flamed. Stubbed the embers into the ground with her foot. Because it’s easier to keep people at a comfortable distance this way. This way, they won’t get too close. They won’t be able to see her for the lonely, insecure person she’s tried so desperately to keep under wraps.

003 – greer.

If there is such a thing as a universal truth, it is that teenage girls exercise cruelty rarely seen outside of cartoony depictions of hell. And if the Manolo-toting schemers of gossip girl were anything to go by, Manhattan girls were the absolute worst. Henrietta had thrown an uncharacteristic fit when her parents had broached the subject of moving (in the middle of the school year, no less) - tears wiped on the back of cashmere sleeves, voice choked with adolescent desperation. Were they trying to ostracise her from her peers? Ensure she’d stand out like a sore thumb? How did they expect her to find friends, when social hierarchies and cliques had already fully solidified by now? The answer to the latter was, unsurprisingly, Greer. Henrietta had hardly set foot on the grounds of her new alma mater, before Greer had linked elbows with her, flashed her a bright smile, and announced to anyone who’d listen that this, this was her best friend now. Maybe, she’d told herself as she returned home from that first day, moving hadn’t been such a bad idea after all. Ever since that first meeting, the two of them had been practically joined at the hip. If Greer was there, you could place a pretty safe bet that Henrietta was there. Joint birthday parties in their early teens, trips abroad over the summer holiday, secrets shared behind walk-in-closet doors. They were inseparable. It was the sort of friendship others looked at through either a lens of envy or aspiration. Or both. Perhaps that’s why Henrietta feels so guilty over how restricted she’d felt since traipsing in Greer’s footsteps all the way to Ogden. It wasn’t that she didn’t still love Greer in that platonic way a best friend does, because she really, really did, but college had just highlighted just how much her existence had been fashioned as an extension of Greer. It wasn’t like the power dynamic had ever been even, not even back in New York, but something about the new backdrop to their relationship had lit up its flaws like a starry night sky. Getting to bask in Greer’s light also meant existing in her shadow. It was always Greer, and then Henrietta, half a step behind. It was hard not to feel like an afterthought. An asterisk at the end of a lengthy paragraph.  004 – family.

(see here) To say that Henrietta’s relationship with her family teethers on being strained, would be an understatement. Everything she does is with the express intent of getting their approval, and yet, she’s never so much as gotten a nod in recognition. Everything she achieves, her brother (four years her senior) has already done. And better at that. During her formative years, they were too concerned with getting Evangeline elected as attorney general to let their children be children. And now they’re too concerned with getting her re-elected to see the damage that did to them.
