001. masie & asher - flashback
The hunter often frequented bars. Most often, she crept along the outskirts, walking with Zander and looking for targets. It wasn't often that she found herself sitting inside of one all by herself. Something had driven her inside that night, though. Maybe it was the exhaustion of a new place, a new city, having to start over with new friends. It all made her feel so very lonely.
And though she was awkward down to her very bones, shy and unable to hold a conversation very well, she desperately craved social interaction. So much so that she decided to grin and bear it, muscle through the pain. So she sat at the bar with a hand raised slightly, trying to get the bartender's attention.
Once she did, she ordered a stella artois, the only beer she knew the name of because it sounded silly, and sat at the bar with her hand wrapped around the base, her eyes looking straight down. Why had she done this again? Did she really need attention that bad? Wasn't it always something that she tried to avoid? Couldn't she have just gone to a movie or taken herself out to dinner? Why had she thought this a good idea at all? She took a sip of her beer, threw a twenty dollar bill on the bar—is that how much beer cost?—and stood up, coming face to face with a man she'd never seen before. She opened her mouth to say something, apologize, anything, but couldn't find the words and ended up staring at him like a complete dumbass.

The Regency, unfortunately, wasn't that far away, and their impromptu date was coming to a close much faster than she wanted it to. What if she didn't end up staying in New Orleans for much longer, and this was the only time they'd ever get to spend together? Did she have to be the one to make the move, to say something? God, speaking up about her feelings sounded absolutely terrible, but also, she could still feel the lingering kiss on her lips and she wanted more.
"Actually," she said, pausing on the sidewalk abruptly, looking at him with a gleam in her eye. "What about your place?" Then, she grimaced slightly, hoping she wasn't being too forward. "I just... I don't want this night to end, and I'm almost positive my brother is home. Small hotel room and all that." She laughed, her eyes flicking from the ground up to his once more and a small smile growing on her lips.
Asher smiled and took the bag for her before he offered a hand to help her up. “To the regency it is.” If he were being honest, it felt like the night was heading toward an end all too soon. But he still wanted to make the walk safe and ensure she had the time to really know where she was going so she could explore more. As the walk started, he pointed out places to avoid. “If you head down that way, you hear about people getting swindled by street merchants, and try to avoid the down part of downtown late at night. That’s where the wild things are.” He joked as they went on.
