𐃈 𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐞’𝐬  𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬  𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞  𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦  𝐭𝐨  𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞  𝐡𝐞𝐫  𝐢𝐧  𝐚𝐧  𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞  𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭  𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡  𝐰𝐚𝐬  𝐧𝐨𝐭  𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐫  𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡.  one  that  was  warm  and  validating  and  kind,  all  things  ruth  was  not  often  given  —  and  as  such,  all  things  ruth  had  convinced  herself  she  was  unworthy  of  receiving.  

when  ruth  had  told  her  friends  that  she  would  be  performing  a  monologue  in  her  theater  class’�� small  production,  she  hadn’t  expected  any  of  them  to  really  even  care,  much  less  come.  her  own  parents  hadn’t  —  with  her  father  being  too  busy  with  his  self-tape  auditions  that  he  would  be  self-submitting,  and  her  mother  not  coming  on  the  off  chance  that  her  father  would  be.  

so  when  peter  spankoffski  had  found  her  backstage  in  the  beginnings  of  a  panic  attack,  with  a  poorly  printed  playbill  in  his  hand  (  they  used  the  old  beat-up  printer  and  cheap  ink,  and  it  showed  in  the  way  the  text  smudged  against  the  paper  )  𝘁𝗵𝗲  𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻  𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁  𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲  𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺  𝘁𝗵𝗲  𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁  𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁  𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲,  𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁  𝗵𝗲𝗿  𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱,  𝗵𝗮𝗱  𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲  𝘁𝗼  𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵  𝗵𝗲𝗿  𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺  𝗵𝗮𝗱  𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻  𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲  𝗶𝗻  𝗵𝗲𝗿  𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆.  suddenly  able  to  breathe  properly  and  have  a  heart  rate  below  130,  ruth  spills  her  guts  about  her  fears  that  she’ll  get  on  stage  and  freeze  or  puke  or  totally  bomb.  ( ❛ i’m  schvitzing,  pete!  i’ve  got  schvitz  in  my  pits!  ❜ )  

ruth  had  not  been  anticipating  his  support  in  the  form  of  his  very  presence,  let  alone  in  his  words  of  reassurance.  𝙞𝙩  𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙣𝙩  𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚  𝙩𝙤  𝙧𝙪𝙩𝙝  𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣  𝙖𝙣𝙮  𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙪𝙚  𝙤𝙧  𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙡𝙤𝙦𝙪𝙮  𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙  𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨.

ruth  clears  her  throat  awkwardly,  ❝  but  uh  -  that’s  my  fault,  i  never  explained  all  the  theater  terms  and  stage  lingo.  ❞  ruth’s  eyes  dart  towards  the  stage  entrance,  and  she  gulps,  before  turning  to  pete:
