     since he was the author, jess didn’t just have to go to the fancy launch events, the cocktail parties with reviewers and publishers and all their finely-dressed friends. oh, no. no, he also had to mingle — which, anyone who knew jess would tell anyone who asked, was his worst nightmare. he usually just found himself by the bar, not really drinking anything but his one beer or whiskey, and waiting for somebody to recognize him — which, unfortunately, this woman had.  “yeah, it’s nice to meet you.”  he shook her hand, giving that slight, uncomfortable smile.  “thanks for coming tonight.”    //    @amidalc  /  ♥’d

     huh. well, he should have guessed he’d run into dean sooner or later, both of them not living in the hollow but having family there. it was weird, meeting face-to-face (chest; god, he’s still so tall) in one of doose’s aisles. but? none of that old animosity was there, at least on jess’s side.  “can i just...”  he gestured to the shelf dean’s figure blocked.  “baby food.”    //    @in-a-world-of-my-own-creation  /  ♥’d

         “how you feel?” liz arched her eyebrows a bit, fighting to keep intense emotion off her face. part of her was so happy that jess seemed to want to be opening up to her. but part of her was terrified that this wasn’t something she could handle properly. she’d done jess wrong in so many ways, and god forbid she’d say something wrong or react the wrong way and regress on the progress they’d made. jess was   so easy to set off   delicate already          she was going to walk on eggshells for this one. “well, go ahead, honey, i’m your mom. that’s what i’m here for. isn’t it? that’s a mom thing.”

     so far, everything the therapist in philly suggested worked out well. maybe this’ll be okay, too.  “i don’t like being around... here.”  there were still parts of him that wanted to take care of liz, weirdly enough. he picked at his hands, clasped together atop his knees. he managed to look into liz’s face after a little bit, noting the need to maybe clarify a bit more.  “with you and t.j. and... doula.”  he loved his sister, and they got along well. but whenever he had to be around his mother and how she mothered doula, all he could think about was how she’d mothered him. then the question would come crashing in: why couldn’t you get all this together for me?  “so i feel like i should just stay with luke this christmas.”

“dad seems to really like it here,”   one might not know it,  with how much she’s seen him GRUMBLE about it over the years,  but she’s certain he does,   “but there’s really not all that much to DO. not that arizona’s much better.  it’s too hot there,  and too dry,”   april’s not sure she’ll ever really understand why her mom had moved her out there.  everything in connecticut had been great!  sure,  her grandma had needed help  —  but why they couldn’t just hire someone to do it so they could stay where she’d grown up was beyond her.  it still is.   “where do you wanna GO?  i’ve never really been on a road trip before,  they seem really exciting though!”   and there’s no one she can think of better suited to take her than jess,  if that is what he’s proposing,  hopefully her EAGERNESS doesn’t make him change his mind.

     “luke’s never lived anywhere else ‘sides litchfield — and that’s basically just slightly bigger stars hollow.”  luke’s opinions on cities of america or anywhere else in the world weren’t exactly reliable or unbiased. he shuffled ‘round behind the counter, assembling the receipts from the day in the order required for luke’s preferred organization. he stepped in when he came for visits, making luke take some breaks. this was a longer visit, prompted mostly by luke having some minor surgery and not wanting to close up the diner while he recovered.  “can’t exactly run away too far right now, huh? but we can take off really early — ever been to new york aside from a school trip to the tour spots?”  he smirked, already expecting the negative answer. they could make a new york trip work, and he’d only have to miss one day at the diner; lane and caesar could manage that much without him.

dream ( from doula! )

     “i’m sorry if i freaked you out.”  he shook his head, running a hand through his sweaty, matted-up hair. god, i need to get in the shower, i need to get in the shower. he should have known better. he shouldn’t have let himself fall asleep in the living room while doula was staying with him. he knew she knew more than he’d ever wanted her to now after liz had that fun little conversation with her a few months earlier, but she hadn’t really seen any of the issues herself. now she’d had to wake him up from one of his nightmares, and the look on her face told him it hadn’t been one of his quiet, still nights.    //    @asheartsfade  /  ‘send a word to find jess in a certain state’ meme  ;  accepting

     “there’s nothin’ else i can say, padmé!”  he shut the cabinet a little harder than need demanded.  “i told you everything about her. you know everything i know, trust me.”  his fingers twitched, and he grabbed the book out of his back pocket, leafing through the pages without focusing on the words. if he didn’t do something with his hands, he’d be outside smoking in five minutes.    //    @amidalc  /  deep ass starters  ;  accepting

     he managed to look her in the eyes, but he couldn’t speak for a good beat or two or ten.  “i don’t miss her.”  but even he knew that he’d taken too long for that answer to be believed.    //    @amidalc  /  angst & post angst starters  ;  accepting

     “yeah. yeah, i’m sorry about that, padmé, but we’re still havin’ this conversation.”  his dark eyes stayed steady on hers. he was calm in it all. he didn’t really need the confirmation he sought with this talk, after all. he knew what was going on with her and rush. he just needed her to know it. he gestured towards her bruised forearm again, but he didn’t reach to touch her.  “those are from fingers.”  he pointed to her neck.  “so are those.”  then her face, purple and red barely hidden beneath the makeup.  “that’s from a wall or the floor.”  he looked into her eyes solidly, but he let the empathy that could only come from real experience and understanding shine through his gaze.  “am i wrong?”    //    @amidalc  /  deep ass starters  ;  accepting

     “is that right?”  his dark eyes flashed with amusement, though his expression tried to remain stern.  “huh. and here i thought you were the only one around here who’d pried that birthday information out of me. guess i was wrong.”  he didn’t like birthdays, and he didn’t like people knowing his birthday. he figured that would inevitably lead to somebody forgetting it, and he’d had enough of that for the first seventeen years of his life. it was better when nobody knew — better to be unknown than forgotten. but he couldn’t get mad at padmé about the party. she was just being nice.    //    @amidalc  /  gilmore girls starters ; accepting

     his eyes amusedly followed her frantic and energetic bouncing.  “that’s what you wanted, right?”  he shifted, holding a little tighter to the handle above. they’d taken a trip into new york — he for some publishing business, she for some pleasure — and jess was taking padmé on her first subway ride. turned out that she was a natural, unloading emotional shit in blatant disregard of the eyes and ears around her in such close proximity.  “you been talkin’ about the guy for months now.”    //    @amidalc  /  gilmore girls starters  ;  accepting
