SOMETIMES IT FELT LIKE A BAD DREAM, THAT FEELING that crept along the Force, filtering through the stars and empty void that separated them. so far away, yet closer than master and apprentice had been in almost two decades. then there was that encounter that should've been her end, but the Force had other ideas. the Force, and a young Jedi. Ahsoka remembered watching Vader limp from the destroyed building, hoping for any sign of the man that had trained her, protected her, raised her after her supposed ' death '. she saw nothing in the half of his face that she could see past the mask that would suggest remorse, and it felt like a rancor hit her in the gut. her master, her friend, her brother was truly gone.

the mask was fixed and pristine once more, covering the entirety of the Sith's face and hiding the human she knew to be beneath it. it was like her encounter with Maul on Mandalore once again --- her lightsabers were a comforting weight on her hips, but she'd trade them in a heartbeat for Anakin to be at her side for this. instead, his body stood across from her, the darkness leeching off of him having dragged him so far into the depths she feared he wouldn't see the light that she brought with her. like a hand outstretched ready to pull him ashore. her heart ached, but she stood firm, mouth thinned and shoulders back.        ❝      you seem surprised, my old master.      ❞
