love language of food interaction call ( accepting ) — @interxstitial
Another late night with little to no sleep. Another early morning with the irresistible need to rise at dawn The usual phantasms haunted him. Unfathomable depths, flashes of red alarms, nausea bubbling up in the gut and throat and mouth, the awareness of being watched even past fitful nightmares.
The horrors always persist, but so does he in spite of it all.
Tired as he is, there's still enough spirit to drive his body. Enhances the smaller pleasures in life. Be kinder and more thoughtful of others. It's partially why he became so steadfast in cooking up a fresh meal for Jiwon. Usually, he's the sort that flees from confrontation. Voicing his honest opinion, or any opinion for that matter, felt a shade lighter than taboo. But this, he refuses to budge on.
"Here— careful, most of it's hot." A majority of the diner table's filled with varying dishes. Small bowls of miyeokguk to start off with, followed up with three huge stacks of haemul panjeon, and a giant clay pot of jjamppong. Of course, that's not mentioning the variety of banchan wedged between it all.
A bone deep sigh leaves him when he finally takes a seat on the booth. The thick upholstery squeaking as he almost melts into a human puddle seconds after. "I already tried all of it as I was cooking. So worth the effort."

ACTUALLY ⛓️ Bella for Dane or Joel. Let her prove she's a good guy lmao
send ⛓️ to find my muse bloody, bruised and restrained ( always accepting )
It's dark and dry, so dry. The cracked skin of his lips break apart and bleed whenever he moves them. Not that he does so anymore. There's no reason to. He's all out of tears. Out of those gut wrenching screams and mindless babbles to stop — please stop, please.
They hadn't.
Worst part is, it didn't even look like they enjoyed this. Sick as the opposite reaction would've been, he almost would have preferred it. Because then this would've only been about him. But it's not. Of course it's not.
Joel's managed to look past so many things in Harborview. The strangeness of most civilians. The odd happenings of visitors. How often those big ships that leave the harbor end up in the bottom of the sea. He's pointedly ignored it all, but now he can't. Whatever, whoever, holds him here has a very specific reason. And he fears that it's to draw someone out. Flush them from the safety of their usual haunts.
He's just not sure who.
Won't matter soon anyways. He's bleeding out, hogtied as he is. They've made neat work with the incisions. Even heard in passing how there's the option to chain him up to speed things up. Let gravity pull out even more blood if they have to wait too long. It's all the same to him. He knows that he's dying.

IN THESE MOMENTS I REALISE
Warnings: Jeong Gu-won's cuteness overload
In the soft morning light filtering through the curtains, Y/N stirred awake to find Jeong Gu-won's gaze fixed on her. His eyes, usually so strong and determined, held a gentle plea that was rare to see. From the moment she opened her eyes, he was there, a persistent shadow fueled by an uncharacteristic need for her attention.
"Please, just stay with me today," he begged, his voice a soft murmur that seemed out of place in the mouth of a man who rarely asked for anything.
Y/N tried to resist, to remind him of the mountain of work awaiting her attention, but Gu-won was relentless. He followed her like a second shadow, his pleas growing more endearing with each passing moment. It was unusual for him to be so vulnerable, so openly in need of her company. After all, he was her husband, the one who had promised to stand by her side, but never to impede her path.
As the hours ticked by, Y/N found her resolve weakening under the weight of his cuteness. Gu-won, the man who had faced down boardrooms and business rivals without a hint of hesitation, was now using every adorable trick in the book to keep her from her work.
Finally, with a laugh and a shake of her head at his antics, Y/N surrendered to his charm. "Alright, you win," she conceded, and Gu-won's face lit up with the victory of a child granted his heart's desire.
They spent the day wrapped up in each other, doing all the little things that couples do when the world outside ceases to exist. They cooked together, the kitchen filled with laughter and the delicious scents of their joint efforts. They walked hand in hand through the park, basking in the simple joy of each other's company. They watched old movies, curled up on the couch under a shared blanket, their laughter mingling with the on-screen dialogue.
And all the while, Mrs. Shin, the ever-reliable annoyed secretary, took care of Y/N's work. She handled the calls, the emails, the paperwork with a practiced hand, ensuring that Y/N's day of indulgence wouldn't result in a disaster tomorrow.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the world, Y/N and Gu-won sat side by side, a pair of contented silhouettes against the fading light. In the quiet of the evening, Y/N leaned her head on Gu-won's shoulder, a silent thank you for a day she hadn't known she needed, a day of love, laughter, and the sweet surrender to her husband's rare and irresistible begging.

"So, funny story.." Yet the tone, that slight quiver of nervousness, says otherwise. This whole 'story' is foolish, if anything. A method of obsession — even self-destruction given how terrified he's become of the vast blue sea. Joel makes an attempt to swallow the anxiety down. Smile like nothing's the matter and only curiosity was at play. But his throat clicks in unease and he grows more pallid by the minute.
"Normally, there's always something living and swimming in any given area of the ocean, right? Like, at least the tiniest feeders or cool looking coral or some sorta crustacean.. That's just the thing, though. From here to about..." A hand raises to shield his eyes against the glaring sun. "There— there's literally nothing. It's just.. empty. Full of water still, but like.. some sort of dead zone."
open to all 30+; your muse contracted out her oceanography services. could go horror, could just be fun ?
Rosalie set the destination in the ship’s computer after manually steering them out of the harbor. Her equipment was safely stored in waterproof containers but she still didn’t have any idea what she was there for. “So mysterious destination is set. Now will you tell me why you hired me?”

round up // MARCH + APRIL 20
You don’t need me to tell you it’s been a weird couple of months, nor do you need me to talk about anything that rhymes with shmorona or shmyrus or shmovid-shmineteen.
The short summary of this time for me (and as it’s relevant to this Round Up): I’ve watched a lot of movies. At the time of publishing this piece, I’ve watched almost 100 while staying inside. As always, I’ll only be highlighting titles new to me, but if you need even more recommendations for movie night, read all the way to the end for more.
March + April Crowd-Pleasers
Agatha Christie Movies
Turner Classic Movies broadcasted Murder She Said (1961), Murder Most Foul (1964), and Ten Little Indians (1965) in March, and I’m only a few movies away from becoming an Agatha Christie junkie. Margaret Rutherford is a delight as the elderly, self-appointed detective Miss Marple in the latter two films. Full disclosure: I’m thinking of becoming a spinster detective aided by my librarian gentleman friend after watching them.
NBC Comedy Night Done Right Podcasts: Office Ladies and The Darkest Timeline
I rewatched all of Community the week after it dropped on Netflix, and it was even better than I remembered. Oh, and then Joel McHale and Ken Jeong decided to randomly start a podcast with hours of meandering memories from making the show? Sign me up for that study group.
If you like your podcast retrospectives a little more structured, try Office Ladies, co-hosted by real-life besties Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey (aka Pam and Angela on The Office). They invite friends who made the show to join the conversation, but I also could just listen to their BFF banter about bread making and Game of Thrones all day.
youtube
Lizzo and Harry Styles Singing “Juice”
I mean…do you really need me to explain why this is here?
The Other Guys (2010)
I’m really late to the party on this one, but I can confirm it’s still funny. Bonus: It’s a great movie for a Netflix Party. Crowd: 9.5/10 // Critic: 8/10
This Personality Test
One of my favorite online retailers, ban.do, shared this, and then another friend forwarded it to me, and I know why it’s going viral. Call it the pop culture version of Myers-Briggs because it types your personality based on books, movies, and TV shows like Harry Potter, Parks and Recreation, and Pride and Prejudice, just to name a few. Speaking of Pam from The Office, apparently we’re 89% alike? I’m flattered!
Onward (2020)
Apparently even Tier 2 Pixar can make me sob. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8/10
The Banker (2020)
Samuel L. Jackson and Anthony Mackie are phenom in this historical drama about a story I wasn’t familiar with, and Nicholas Hoult is an actor that can get me to watch pretty much anything. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8/10
Happiness Continues (2020)
Did I dance and sing and jump around the living room with sisters while reliving this concert together? I’m not saying I did not do that. Crowd: 10/10 // Critic: 7/10
Kill Bill (2003-04)
Quentin Tarantino movies are hit-or-miss for me, but, boy, these two volumes hit just right. Uma Thurman’s Bride is complex and relatable and insanely cool, aka the perfect center for a complex, satisfying, and insanely cool action saga. Crowd: 9.5/10 // Critic: 9/10
youtube
A Parks & Recreation Special (2020)
I have no novel thoughts on why this was such a warm hug, but I’m so grateful this reunion was as beautiful as a desert fox.
March + April Critic Picks
The Man in the High Castle (2015-19)
Imagine a world where the Axis Powers won World War II, and you’ve got a great premise for a thought experiment and for a TV series. This Amazon Prime show made me realize I’ve had the privilege to never need to think much about this scenario, and while we’ve got a host of problems in 2020, this realistic (and addicting) drama dwarfs them with this what-could-have-been scenario. The series didn’t quite stick the landing that the first season promised, but the characters and performances are top-notch start to finish, the world building takes a careful attention to detail, and the dialogue is just as powerful for what isn’t being said in each scene.
Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933)
Some movies important to the history of cinema taste like vegetables to my modern sensibilities—this Busby Berkeley-choreographed musical wasn’t one of them thanks to dance routines that still marvel and jokes that are still funny. Plus, you can enjoy Ginger Rogers singing the stage classic “We’re in the Money.” Crowd: 7.5/10 // Critic: 8.5/10
Reply All episode #158 “The Case of the Missing Hit”
I’ve recommended Reply All before, but this strange pop culture mystery is as curious as any true crime story you’ve listened to.
Alyosha by Joshua Powell & the Great Train Robbery (2015)
Great soundtrack for a rainy day.
youtube
“Inside Friend” by Leon Bridges ft. John Mayer
Dream team.
Emma. (2020)
An aesthetically-pleasing Jane Austen adaptation that catches both the author’s snarky and romantic sides. This article from Verily captures why Emma Woodhouse is an Austen heroine that resonates so much today. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10
Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962)
Who would have thought my French-speaking sister who has trouble sitting still through movies would be the one to introduce me to the mind of Agnès Varda? Her heroine Cléo is fashionable and eccentric and flighty, but most of all, she’s vulnerable as we watch in near-real time the two hours leading up to her getting test results back from her doctor. A lovely cinéma vérité look at 1960s Paris. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 10/10
Double Indemnity (1944)
A salesman and his lover plot to kill her husband for the insurance money—it doesn’t go as planned. (Who woulda thunk?) A piece of advice: Don’t start a drinking game for every time Fred MacMurray calls Barbara Stanwyck “baby”—you won’t remember anything past the premise I just described tomorrow. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8.5/10
The Women (1939)
An 100% female cast leads a story written by women adapted from a play written by a woman. While some of the setting details are dated, the questions these women (played by Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Paulette Godard, Joan Fontaine, and more) are asking about marriage, family, independence, and a woman’s place in society are the same today. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 9/10
Also in March + April…
I’m keeping track of everything I’m watching while staying inside in a Letterboxd list made up mostly of favorites and feel-goodies I’m rewatching if you need more recommendations.
My friends at ZekeFilm and I wrote up two sets of recommendations of what to watch while staying inside.
In the mood for a new release? If you’re considering the new Ben Affleck drama The Way Back, you can read by ZekeFilm review to see if it’s up your alley.
On SO IT’S A SHOW?, Kyla and covered one of the greatest movies of all time, one of my most favorite movies of all time, and a movie about a horse. Oh, and a few conspiracy theories!

At just over 2 hours long, this is missing a few sequences, but all the big numbers and memorable dialogue scenes are intact. It's shot from the very front row of the stalls at the side so, although this causes a lot of problems for the brave person who filmed it, we DO get many nice close-ups and a chance to see the show from quite an unusual angle at times! There’s a clear sense of longing that plagues him. Whenever he finds himself on the shore, too close to what was once a second home, something pangs painfully just beneath the ribs. Where there’s usually an anxious smile now twists into a deep frown. The white crested waves has always been his North Star. Without it, he feels lost — sick, almost.
But the ache’s temporarily assuaged with an interruption. An ancient looking glass bottle breaches the sand before his feet. Umber crackled, seabed tumbled. Sunlight hits it just right to reveal something inside. Squinting, Joel inches close enough to pluck it from hot sand. “Message in a bottle— what are the fucking chances?” His tongue prods at the inner left check as he contemplates which course of action to take.
“Think we should open it?”

"No-" More like no one listens to the start of his protest. Joel might be a good friend, but he's aware of the all consuming need to keep the peace in small social situations. Sometimes, he's afraid the guy will literally detonate if caught in a high stress situation for too long. So he fully gives in - for Joel. Not for this pint sized, overcurious minx.
"Great!" Joel all but beams in response to Bella's suggestion before he hurriedly shuffles Dane to a nearby table. He keeps a smile present even when he drops his voice, thinking they're far away enough to be out of earshot. "Dude! What's the deal?"
"What's my deal? What's her fucking deal-"
"What do you even mean? Her deal's being a really great and valued employee that's helped me keep this place running through the night. She's great with customers! Everyone loves her! So why don't you, of all people, act that same? You're one of the more chill people here, man! I don't get it!"
Dane sucks in a deep breath as he listens. Yes, it was stupid of him to barge in like that. Yes, Joel isn't wrong, but that doesn't mean he has to agree. "Something's off about her. I don't know what, bu-"
"Oh! Thanks, again." Joel interrupts once Bella joins them. He does an awful job at pretending like everything's normal; the smile's starting to twitch and his pitch starts twice as high.
"..." Begrudgingly, Dane shakes the offered hand. His lips twist further at the lack of warmth he feels. Brows furrow deeper as it dawns on him they're about the same temperature. "Dane Cohen," he says slowly, still distracted by the new tidbit of information after his hand drops away.
"He's a professor at UMaine! Teaches marine biology, and- just between you and me? Students love him. Like, basically obsessed- there's a little group of them that flocks around whenever he's on campus. Sometimes even here."
"That's not.." Another sigh pulls from Dane. Another edge of defeat that isn't technically false. "They're not obsessed. They just have a lot of.. questions. Besides the point. How long have you been here, Bella?"
All things considered, Bella likes listening to Joel talk. She also likes that apparently whatever was happening between her and the newcomer is over now, apparently put on hold with the sharing of a common friend. Perhaps for the best.
And it's entertaining to see the two go back and forth - they're clearly familiar with each other.
Though, perhaps Bella can't help but stoke the fire a little bit, settling a cold hand on Joel's arm as he turns and smiles at her, talking about coffee.
"I think that sounds like a good idea. I think a fresh start might be just what we need." The smile is aimed again at Dane, now. "You two go sit down and I'll bring it over."
Bella extricates herself from the situation since she's sure Dane will have something to say while she's not there (never mind the fact that she can hear clear across the diner). She doesn't blame him, really. It's... reaffirming to see someone else so protective, even if he's a little misguided as to who the target should be.
When she returns, it's with two (large) coffees on a tray, as well as a tea for herself, setting them in front of the men before sliding into a seat. "Bella Rose." Cold hand is offered to Dane. "It's a pleasure to meet you."

The smile infuriates him. If Joel hadn't gotten in the way, things would have taken a turn for the worse. Full body breaking and mending type of worse. It's avoided for now, though. Both of them are yapping about the damn weather, and he can't help but feel like they're being watched. So Dane relents. Purses his lips into a thin line, but doesn't try to continuously scare the blonde away.
"What? Nah, nah— it's humid, man. Like I can feel the humidity every time I breathe, kind of humid," Joel babbles on, doing what he does best — talk nonstop. "Oh— you don't have to do that, Bella. Thank you though." The offer calms him a smidgen. Just enough to slow his yabbering. "I don't even know if he's gonna stay here for long. Usually it's a quick in and out for an obscene amount of coffee—"
"It's just a large cup, Joel," Dane starts, still bordering on exasperation before he's leveled a look from the shorter man. "Okay, two large cups, but it saves me a trip from going to the cafe between classes, alright?"
"Yeah..... alright. Still don't get how you sip on super cold coffee like it's fine wine. Actually, you know what? Let's get three cups of coffee for the three of us. Redo introductions while we're at it, yeah?"
Longer than you've got strands of her.
It pulls a potentially more genuine smile from her, one of actual amusement rather than the posturing she'd been doing. And it's because she was only posturing - making it clear she wouldn't be intimidated - that Bella yields easily when Joel steps between them, back to the picture of faux innocence she so often projects to the world. She doesn't actually want to start a fight, after all, and she likes the young man (a laughable thing, her calling him young when she looks the way she does). Enough to put the rest aside.
"I've always preferred wet weather," She pipes up, as if anyone had asked for her opinion at all. It's not like they're talking about rain anyway. It doesn't matter, because she's moving on anyway, looking at Joel (the easier target, surely) with big doe eyes. "Should I get you and your friend some coffee, Joel? If he's been out of town for a while, you'll want to catch up, I'm sure."

A crisp crack sounds when he breaks apart wooden chopsticks. "Hm? Aw, dude, anytime." Usually, he'd be over the top with energy ( his own way of overcompensating for the incredibly lack of it in this dreary town ), but his reply's quieter this time around. Softer with empathy and.. Well, matching exhaustion.
"Don't mind cooking stuff from the menu here, but it's always nice to make something from home. Hard to justify when it's just me, you know? Got that same habit most of our parents have with the whole 'every meal's fit to feed a family of twenty'." He chortles at that. Briefly reminisces how many times he's asked his parents why there was so much food prepared just for the three of them. Now look at him doing the same exact thing.
"Anyways, how've you been?" Joel tries to pitch it casually, but takes care to be mindful as well. It can be a loaded question. Especially when things haven't necessarily been good for a long while. He might not know what ails Jiwoo, but he's not blind. The signs are all there. Just like how it he, too, wears similar symptoms.
one day, this town will only be a memory. like all the others before it, harborview is just another stop along jiwon's fruitless search for peace. he's been skirting along the coast for months now, finding some comfort in the perpetual white noise of waves against the shore. the storms, too, help to drown out the whispers. sometimes, though, jiwon wonders how it would feel to settle indefinitely. honestly, he's lingered in harborview long enough to recognise several faces. he can even name his neighbours, which is more than he can say for the last three towns he took up residence in. this isn't home, but it's.. something.
when jiwon blinks, he finds an array of dishes laid before him. several long moments pass in silence as his gaze floats over the now crowded table. the combination of salt in the air and his favourite dishes from childhood evokes a homesickness like no other. every breath makes his lungs swell with the ocean and familiar spices. in an instant, jiwon is transported back to his tiny hometown by the sea. he's eight years old again and nursing a busted lip, the result of an over-ambitious pirouette on slippery docks. rather than mock or scold him, his mother tends to his wounds, plants a kiss on his forehead, and conjures up a warm meal as if by magic, using the fish freshly caught by his father just this morning. he is home.
"thank you," jiwon whispers, his voice paper-thin and eyes misty. he wants to apologise to joel for all the effort that's gone into the meal. his own fridge is cramped with food that will spoil, untouched, because jiwon can't for the life of him keep anything down in his stomach. cooking is hard, and joel's done so much. in a moment like this, however, jiwon knows that the best response is: "thank you."

Every bit of him bristles at that. The audacity — that he, himself, partakes freely in without realizing how hypocritical it is. "I've been a part of this town longer than you've got strands of hair." There's a deepening in timbre, a more scratchy quality that especially freaks the only other witness here.
"Whoa! Hey, now!" Joel calls out with a nervous laugh. He's already scrambling over to the table, literally wedging himself between Dane and the new hire. "Is it just me or is the weather particularly swampy today?" More anxious laughter, more whale eyed glances between the two.
"Swamp— what are you talking about?" It's enough disinformation to shake Dane out of the towering glower and inevitable turn. "It's dry as a bone outside. In here, too."
Bella Rose, the little vampire that could. She didn't often go poking her nose into other people's business, but she'd been so dreadfully bored, holed up in the big city by herself, that she thought a change of pace by the seaside might do her some good.
It hadn't taken long to realise that there was more going on in this pretty little town than simply collecting seashells. She'd taken to spending evenings in the diner, helping buss tables when she was bored - a holdover from other diner jobs she'd had - listening to Joel and the others talk. And thinking.
The appearance of this new man doesn't phase her, cool eyes looking up (and up, since she only hits 5'3 on a good day) at him without even a mite of cower - a slow smile revealing some pointy teeth of her own. "I've never seen you around either. How do I know you don't belong?"
