“i know, baby…” summer cups ruby’s face from where she’s sitting on her hospital bed, hand shaky & scarred but not letting go of her daughter. she had planned this conversation for years, & she knew that ruby deserved nothing but the truth — even if the truth was going to hurt.

“the night of the mission, i left… with raven. we needed some way to get to salem’s castle, & we thought that… with my eyes & her maiden powers, we had a chance.” tears prickle summers eyes, eyes that haven’t been used for their ability since the day she left.

“i didn’t stand a chance. i told raven that… that if one of us were to get hurt or — or worse, that we wouldn’t save each other. we couldn’t risk it… someone had to go back home. it just…” summer brushed a few stray strands of hair from ruby’s face. “it just wasn’t me… i fought so hard, baby. there was nothing i wanted more than to come home to you.”

summer closes her eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath before she discloses the hardest parts to think about of that night.

“she defeated me… attacked me until i was unconscious & then took me captive. i thought… i didn’t — ” she stops for a second, taking ruby’s face in her hands. “i thought i’d come right back home to you… i’m sorry, baby… i’m so sorry…”

if there was one thing summer rose was prone to being , it was clumsy . naturally , she’d fallen pretty hard while training & had manage to bust up her arms & legs .

“ oh ! hi baby , ” she picked ruby up with a laugh , pressing a kiss to her forehead . “ don’t you worry about me , my sweet girl . . . mommy’s strong . ”

" i'll stand by you, no matter what challenges come our way. " (from tai. pls consider its when summer is pregnant with ruby and the two birds have since become scarce bc being a parent is scary or whatever)

the pregnancy itself was the latest of summers worries . what concerned her the most was her baby’s safety , the structure of their family , & most importantly — her eyes .

summer tried to find joy in the fact that they were having a baby girl . it had been a new discovery , & she was supposed to be excited , right ?

but all she could think about was her baby opening her eyes for the first time & seeing silver . it kept her up at night .

“ i just — ” summer pulled her knees up to her chest . “ how do i know i can do this , tai ? we’re not even thirty . what if i mess this up ? ”

summer picked ruby up with ease , planting a kiss atop her small head .

“ hello , my petal , ” she laughed , using her cape to wrap ruby up . “ i missed you terribly while i was away on my mission , but i assure you i am not going anywhere anytime soon , my beautiful girl . ”
